Large-scale synthesis of water-soluble luminescent hydroxyapatite nanorods for security printing

Xiaohu Chen,Xiaoying Jin,Junjun Tan,Wei Li,Minfang Chen,Lan Yao,Haitao Yang

Luminescent hydroxyapatite nanoparticles , which have excellent biocompatibility, excellent photostability, and strong fluorescence, have received increasing attention as bioprobes in cell imaging . However, they are also excellent candidates for use in ink-jet security printing. Successful products for related applications usually require highly crystalline, mono-dispersible hydroxyapatite nanorods with good colloidal stability and high fluorescence in aqueous media. These requirements are hard to simultaneously satisfy using most synthetic methods. In this paper, we report a simple and versatile hydrothermal method that incorporates the use of sodium citrate to prepare water-dispersible Eu 3+ -doped hydroxyapatite nanorods. The hydroxyapatite nanorods obtained using this method are highly crystalline rod-shaped particles with an average length of 50–80   nm and an average diameter of 15–30   nm. Dispersions of these hydroxyapatite nanorods, which are transparent with a slightly milky color under natural light and a bright red color when excited with 241   nm UV light , display zeta potentials of −35   mV and hydrodynamic diameters of 120   nm. These dispersions remain colloidally stable for a few months. Dispersions with these properties could be easily applied to security printing for confidential information storage and anti-counterfeiting technologies.

Fully Printed Ultraflexible Supercapacitor Supported by a Single-Textile Substrate

Huihui Zhang,Yan Qiao,Zhisong Lu

Textile-based supercapacitors have recently attracted much attention owing to their great potential as energy storage components in wearable electronics. However, fabrication of a high-performance, fully printed, and ultraflexible supercapacitor based on a single textile still remains a great challenge. Herein, a facile, low-cost, and textile-compatible method involving screen printing and transfer printing is developed to construct all-solid-state supercapacitors on a single silk fabric. The system exhibits a high specific capacitance of 19.23 mF cm–2 at a current density of 1 mA cm–2 and excellent cycling stability with capacitance retention of 84% after 2000 charging/discharging cycles. In addition, the device possesses superior mechanical stability with stable performance and structures after 100 times of bending and twisting. A butterfly-patterned supercapacitor was manufactured to demonstrate the compatibility of the printing approaches to textile aesthetics. This work may provide a facile and versatile approach for fabricating rationally designed ultraflexible textile-based power-storage elements for potential applications in smart textiles and stretchable/flexible electronics.

All-printed ultraflexible and stretchable asymmetric in-plane solid-state supercapacitors (ASCs) for wearable electronics

Li Liu,Qingyong Tian,Weijing Yao,Mengxiao Li,Yongwei Li,Wei Wu

Increasing demands for portable and wearable electronics have stimulated considerable efforts to develop ultraflexible, stretchable and high-power supercapacitors . Existing stretchable supercapacitors are characterized by poor energy density , low stretchability and cumbersome fabrication process limit its practical application. How to enhance the energy densities and stretchability while simplify the fabrication process is a critical challenge for achieving the high-performance stretchable supercapacitors. Herein, we propose a simple and efficient fully-printing approach to manufacture the stretchable asymmetric supercapacitors, the functional layers are directly printed onto stretchable textile substrates in the order of silver current collector, cathode electrode, anode electrode and gel electrolyte. To the best of our knowledge, all-printed ultraflexible and stretchable asymmetric supercapacitors with ultrahigh energy density are first fabricated from two kinds of functional screen printing inks. The stretchable asymmetric supercapacitors using Ag@PPy@MnO 2 cathode electrode and activated carbon anode electrode display an ultra-high energy density of 0.0337 mW h cm −2  at a high power density of 0.38 mW cm −2 . In addition, its capacitance retention reaches 90.8% after 5000 cycles and 86.2% after 40% stretching strain. Furthermore, these asymmetric supercapacitors exhibit ultra-flexibility and mechanical stability at severely flexible states (including stretching, twisting, crimping and winding), and a red LED (2.8 V) is stable alight and powered by tandem asymmetric supercapacitors.

Fully printed planar moisture-enabled electric generator arrays for scalable function integration

Tiancheng He,Haiyan Wang,Bing Lu,Tianlei Guang,Ce Yang,Yaxin Huang,Huhu Cheng,Liangti Qu

Ubiquitous moisture is of particular attraction for sustainable power generation. However, rigorous assembly procedures limit the efficient large-scale integration for moisture-enabled electric generators (MEGs). Herein, we develop fully printed planar MEG (PMEG) arrays using modulated polycation and polyanion inks, which maximize access to moisture and make it free of strict assembly and device packaging. Thus, a PMEG unit (only 0.3 cm 2 ) generates an open-circuit voltage of up to 1.1 V, along with a power density of 2.6 μW cm −2 . A small piece of sheet with 200 PMEG units offers a maximum voltage of 200 V and a current of 1.3 mA. A standard power module is constructed to meet the on-demand power supply requirements of compact electronics. Furthermore, scalable and customizable PMEG arrays can be compatibly integrated with flexible circuits, as demonstrated by a fully printed self-powered functional system including PMEG arrays and energy-storage and electrochromic devices.

Enhanced Performance of Carbon-Based, Fully Printed Mesoscopic Perovskite Solar Cells through Defects Passivation

Kun Chen,Zheling Zhang,Jian Liu,Yu Huang,Dongjie Wang,Bin She,Baichen Liu,Xiaoling Zhang,Jian Zhang

Carbon-based, fully printed mesoscopic perovskite solar cells (PMPSCs) possess outstanding environmental stability, which can be fabricated by screen-printing techniques with low costs in large area. The performance of PMPSCs is severely hindered by strong carrier recombination from ionic defects at the grain boundaries in perovskite films. In this work, ethylene carbonate (EC) with electron-rich CO functional groups are successfully introduced in to (5-AVA) x MA 1− x PbI 3 PMPSCs as an additive to effectively suppress carrier recombination by passivating the defects at grain boundaries. The density functional theory calculations and film characterization reveal that EC effectively reduces charge trapping density by passivation of defects. With the introduction of EC, the power conversion efficiency (PCE) of PMPSCs with EC is increased up to 15.28% from 12.99% of PMPSCs without EC. In addition, PMPSCs with EC show excellent stability and better moisture resistance under air conditions. The PMPSCs with EC keep above 90% of the original PCE after 55 days stored in air with a humidity of 60 ± 10%. The work offers a strategy to passivate defects in high-performance PMPSCs with excellent stability.

High-Performance All-Printed Flexible Micro-Supercapacitors with Hierarchical Encapsulation

Yuhang Yuan,Wei Yuan,Yaopeng Wu,Xuyang Wu,Xiaoqing Zhang,Simin Jiang,Bote Zhao,Yu Chen,Chenghao Yang,Liangxin Ding,Zhenghua Tang,Yingxi Xie,Yong Tang

Printed micro-supercapacitors (MSCs) have shown broad prospect in flexible and wearable electronics. Most of previous studies focused on printing the electrochemically active materials paying less attention to other key components like current collectors and electrolytes. This study presents an all-printing strategy to fabricate in-plane flexible and substrate-free MSCs with hierarchical encapsulation. This new type of “all-in-one” MSC is constructed by encapsulating the in-plane interdigital current collectors and electrodes within the polyvinyl-alcohol-based hydrogel electrolyte via sequential printing. The bottom electrolyte layer of this fully printed MSCs helps protect the device from the limitation of conventional substrate, showing excellent flexibility. The MSCs maintain a high capacitance retention of 96.84% even in a completely folded state. An optimal electrochemical performance can be achieved by providing ample and shorter transport paths for ions. The MSCs using commercial activated carbon as the active material are endowed with a high specific areal capacitance of 1892.90 mF cm −2 at a current density of 0.3 mA cm −2 , and an outstanding volumetric energy density of 9.20 mWh cm −3 at a volumetric power density of 6.89 mW cm −3 . For demonstration, a thermo-hygrometer is stably powered by five MSCs which are connected in series and wrapped onto a glass rod. This low-cost and versatile all-printing strategy is believed to diversify the application fields of MSCs with high capacitance and excellent flexibility.

Room-Temperature-Processed, Carbon-Based Fully Printed Mesoscopic Perovskite Solar Cells with 15% Efficiency

Jian Liu,Dongjie Wang,Yang Zhang,Kun Chen,Bin She,Baichen Liu,Zheling Zhang,Yu Huang,Jian Xiong,Hailiang Zhang,Jian Zhang

Methylamine (MA) and methylamine hydrochloride (MACl) are widely used to prepare highly efficient and stable perovskite solar cells (PSCs). However, MA, as a gas, is difficult to handle and inevitably leads to a large amount of escape, and it is difficult to quantitatively calculate. Herein, selecting a mixture solvent of methylamine ethanol solution (MA-EtOH sol) and acetonitrile (ACN) as a solvent, a new strategy for preparing fully printed mesoscopic perovskite solar cells (MPSCs) at room temperature is first proposed. With the introduction of 20 mol% MACl as additive, the fully printed MPSCs are fabricated without any posttreatment at room temperature via a one-step drop-coating method. As a consequence, the average power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 14.73 ± 0.3% (0.1 cm 2 ) with almost no hysteresis is achieved. Most importantly, the device also exhibits excellent long-term stability when it is unencapsulated. Specifically, the unencapsulated device still retains nearly 100% of its original PCE after 64 days and 88% after 81 days of storage in the dark with a humidity of 50 ± 5% in an atmospheric environment. It provides a new idea for constructing fully printed MPSCs at room temperature in the future.

All-printed solid-state supercapacitors with versatile shapes and superior flexibility for wearable energy storage

Jing Liang,Yu Feng,Li Liu,Shuaiqi Li,Changzhong Jiang,Wei Wu

A supercapacitor, as a new green energy source, has attracted considerable attention because of its intrinsic high safety, fast charge/discharge rate and long cycle life. Meanwhile, the traditional energy devices present large limitations with respect to their structure and performance, which cannot meet the demand of shape diversity in the wearable electronic field. Herein, all-printed solid-state flexible supercapacitors with versatile shapes were fabricated as power sources by the screen printing method. The flexible supercapacitors were prepared by using cobalt hexacyanoferrate (CoHCF) nanocubes as electrode materials. They not only presented a variety of shapes, such as squares, school emblems of the Wuhan University, flowers and carps, but also showed excellent areal capacitance of 12.5 mF cm−2. There was no significant capacitance loss of these flexible supercapacitors even on bending to 180°, showing excellent mechanical flexibility. In addition, the highest energy density and power density of these printed flexible solid-state supercapacitors were 0.0011 mW h cm−2 and 0.44 mW cm−2, respectively. The capacitance was retained at 90% of the initial value after 8000 cycles. This efficient printed electronic technology is expected to provide an economical and practical method for the future construction of flexible energy storage devices with versatile patterns for wearable electronics.

Wide-linearity flexible OFET biosensors for wearable biomarkers detection

Xingguo Zhang,Zhihua Pu,Wangwang Zhu,Wenjun Li,Hao Zheng,Chengcheng Li,Dachao Li

Flexible organic field-effect transistor (OFET) sensors, which leverage conjugated π-bonds in organic semiconductor layers to facilitate rapid charge transfer and enhance sensing sensitivity, offer significant advantages for detecting low concentrations of biomarkers in wearable biomedical electronics, such as glucose monitoring for diabetes. However, conventional OFET sensors suffer from a narrow linear range due to limitations in threshold voltage and saturation current. Therefore, a common problem in the field of the OFET-based biomarker sensing is that the narrow linear range of these sensors fails to meet detection requirements. This study addresses this challenge by expanding the linear detection range of OFET glucose sensors to 16.78 μM-1 M through the synergistic integration of four p-type and n-type OFET sensor array. Additionally, to ensure consistency in the fabrication of the sensor array, a fully printed processing technology using a bank structure was developed. Finally, a flexible epidermal continuous blood glucose monitoring system based on the wide-linearity OFET glucose sensor array was constructed to verify its practical feasibility.

Li Liu,Qiang Lu,Shuanglei Yang,Jiang Guo,Qingyong Tian,Weijing Yao,Zhanhu Guo,Vellaisamy A. L. Roy,Wei Wu

The next-generation energy storage devices are expected to be flexible, cost-effective, and high power storage devices to complement or replace rigid batteries and conventional capacitors for wearable electronic device applications. In this regard, a scalable and cost-effective fabrication of all-printed solid-state microsupercapacitors (MSCs) involving self-template synthesis of Ag@PPy nanocomposites (NCs) as active materials is demonstrated. The as-obtained Ag@PPy NCs exhibit high specific capacitance and are formulated as screen printing inks that are printed to form electrodes on plastic substrates. The Ag current collectors, Ag@PPy NC electrodes, and gel electrolyte are screen printed and fabricated as flexible all-solid-state MSCs exhibiting excellent capacitive features, including remarkable mechanical flexibility of 77.6% after 1000 bending cycles, superior stability of 82.6% after 10000 cycles, and high energy density of 0.00433 mW h cm −2 . The Ag@PPy inks are easily prepared and more than 40 printed MSCs are fabricated on flexible plastic substrates in less than 30 min. It is envisioned that the fully printed flexible all-solid-state MSCs could be a promising candidate for flexible energy storage devices.

Structure-designed fabrication of all-printed flexible in-plane solid-state supercapacitors for wearable electronics

Li Liu,Yu Feng,Jing Liang,Shuaiqi Li,Bin Tian,Weijing Yao,Wei Wu

The current development of wearable electronics has raised the requirement for developing matchable supercapacitors . Currently, most researches have been focused on the electrode materials , but few studies have been carried out on the structure of supercapacitors. Herein, we report an efficient fully-printing fabrication approach to construct flexible in-plane solid-state supercapacitors. Utilization of the screen printing technique, a series of factors which affect the performance of planar supercapacitors have been studied to construct smart planar supercapacitors, including dimensions, finger interspaces, functional layers of active materials and asymmetric structure, which is firstly systematically investigated for efficiently increasing the performance of planar supercapacitors. More interestingly, the planar supercapacitors can be fabricated as various patterns with artistic design on various flexible substrates , demonstrating that the screen printing process is facile and easy scalable for practical production. The optimized symmetric supercapacitors exhibit good mechanical flexibility, outstanding areal capacitance of 35.3 mF cm −2 and superior cycling performance. Compare with the symmetric supercapacitors, higher energy density of asymmetric supercapacitors can be achieved (from 0.00177 mWh cm −2 to 0.00687 mWh cm −2 ). We envision that this strategy of constructing fully-printed flexible planar supercapacitors with structural design paves the way for the improvement of flexible energy storage devices.

Bending the Straight into Curved: A Tree-Ring-Inspired Fully Printed Omnidirectional Triboelectric Nanogenerator with Ring-Nested Structure for All-In-One Wearable Self-Powered Systems and IoT Smart Packaging

Yaoli Wang,Guodong Liu,Qingjun Meng,Xiaohong Jiang,Xinyi Li,Hanbin Liu,Zhijian Li

The free-standing triboelectric nanogenerator (FS-TENG), known for its simple structure and a universal external friction layer, has gained attention in wearable electronics and IoT smart packaging. Nevertheless, the design of parallel electrodes limits sliding energy conversion from multiple angles. In this paper, inspired by the tree ring structure, a structurally simple omnidirectional triboelectric nanogenerator (O-TENG) was designed. By the "bending the straight into curved" approach, the traditional parallel straight electrodes of the FS-TENG are transformed into a ring-nested electrode structure, achieving sliding energy harvesting and electrical signal generation from arbitrary angles. The fully printed O-TENG by optimizing its dielectric properties for the friction layer, achieving a maximum open-circuit voltage and short-circuit current of 232.45   V and 1.37   µA, respectively. Thanks to the symmetrical ring-nested structure, the relative standard deviations of the open-circuit voltage and short-circuit current across multiple angles were only 2.63% and 4.52%. When integrated with micro-supercapacitors and printed on fabric, the O-TENG-powered system successfully ran a digital watch after 1006   s of motion. Furthermore, the system integrated a printed electrochromic device (ECD) to develop a motion-interactive optical modulation system, where the ECD changed from light blue to dark blue after 398   s of arm friction during running. Finally, the O-TENG, printed as a sensor tag on packaging, monitors multi-angle sliding motion. Therefore, the bio-inspired simplified O-TENG, associated with its fully printed fabrication and integration method, show great potential for novelty developments of wearable electronics and IoT smart packaging.
