All-Cellulose Bioplastics from Waste Wood Particles

Jing Zhou,Muqiu You,Jinhao Xu,Yongcan Jin,Dagang Li,Zhaoyang Xu,Chuchu Chen

The concerning accumulation of nonbiodegradable plastic films in the environment and the associated risks have prompted a vigorous quest for biobased degradable substitutes. However, creating biomass-based plastics with a combination of high mechanical strength, water resistance, and rapid degradation in a natural environment presents a great challenge. Herein, we report a facile method to develop high-performance all-cellulose bioplastics from waste wood particles by low-energy microfibrillation and simple oxidation. The resulting oxidized all-cellulose microfiber films (OCMFs) containing a densely packed microscale fiber network structure simultaneously achieve high light transmittance (≈85.1%), low haze (≈6%), and notably high wet strength (≈32.34 MPa), superior to those of typical cellulose nanofiber films with inherent high hydrophilicity. Moreover, the thickness of OCMF can be easily regulated via a self-adhesive lamination approach, overcoming the limited film thickness formed by vacuum filtration. Coupled with low-valuable waste raw materials, all-cellulose components, low-energy microscale fabrication, and high optical clarity and water resistance, the proposed OCMF proves its bright future as ecofriendly alternative bioplastics in sustainable materials.

All-Fiber Structured Electronic Skin with High Elasticity and Breathability

Zhaoling Li,Miaomiao Zhu,Jiali Shen,Qian Qiu,Jianyong Yu,Bin Ding

With the rapid advancement in artificial intelligence, wearable electronic skins have attracted substantial attention. However, the fabrication of such devices with high elasticity and breathability is still a challenge and highly desired. Here, a route to develop an all-fiber structured electronic skin with a scalable electrospinning fabrication technique is reported. The fabricated electronic skin is demonstrated to exhibit high pressure sensing with a sensitivity of 0.18 V kPa −1 in the detection range of 0–175 kPa. This wearable device could maintain prominent sensing performance and mechanical stability in the presence of large deformation, even when the elastic deformation is up to 50%. The electronic skin is easily conformable on different desired objects for real-time spatial mapping and long-term tactile sensing. Besides, it possesses high gas permeability with a water vapor transmittance rate of 10.26 kg m −2 d −1 . More importantly, the electronic skin is capable of working in a self-powered manner and even serves as a reliable power source to effectively drive small electronics. Possessing several compelling features, such as high sensitivity, high elasticity, high breathability as well as being self-powered and scalable in fabrication, the presented device paves a pathway for smart electronic skins.

Catalytic pyrolysis of holocellulose followed by integrated aldol condensation and hydrogenation to produce aviation fuel

Shanshan Shao,Zian Ye,Chengyue Liu,Xinggang Hu,Jiayuan Sun,Xiaohua Li,Huiyan Zhang,Rui Xiao

The carbonyl platform compound from the catalytic pyrolysis of holocellulose was employed for the integrated aldol condensation and hydrogenation to produce hydrocarbons in the range of jet fuel. By the carbonylation of the pyrolysis vapor from holocellulose prepared from rape straw, bagasse and poplar (RS-Holo, BG-Holo and PL-Holo), it was revealed that BG-Holo rich in cellulose as the raw material presented the most production of carbonyl compounds including aldehydes and ketones. The optimal temperature for carbonylation of pyrolysis vapor from holocellulose was determined to be 400 °C, with the maximized carbon yield of carbonyls reaching 46.11%, which was boosted to the summit of 53.59% with more addition of ZrO 2 catalyst. The integrated aldol condensation and hydrogenation were carried out using the catalytic pyrolysis bio-oil as the reactant over Ni/Mg-Al-O/AC bifunctional catalyst, with the highest carbon yield of hydrocarbons reaching 78.11%. The production mechanism of the final targeted alkanes was speculated, and it was discovered that ketones and aldehydes with short carbon chains are more prone to secondary condensation than those with long carbon chains, resulting in high-energy–density aviation fuel. Furthermore, the heating value of final oil was calculated based on an empirical formula, which was comparable to that of Jet A, meeting the standard of ASTM7566. The final oil’s distillation range distribution was simulated, and most of it fell in the range of aviation fuel. In this study, catalytic fast pyrolysis of holocellulose followed by integrated aldol condensation and hydrogenation was proved to be a promising way for producing aviation fuel.

High-performance, breathable, and degradable fully cellulose-based sensor for multifunctional human activity monitoring

Ao Li,Jun Xu,Dezhong Xu,Zhaohui Zhang,Daxian Cao,Jun Li,Wei Zhang,Fengshan Zhang

High-performance flexible piezoresistive pressure sensors have garnered considerable attention for health monitoring and medical diagnostics. However, achieving both high sensitivity and a wide detection range is often limited by complex, costly microstructural designs. Furthermore, the non-degradability of many sensing materials poses environmental challenges. Here, we present an innovative, flexible, fully degradable pressure sensor based entirely on cellulose-based paper and MXene. Utilizing a cost-effective dip-coating method, MXene was uniformly deposited onto cellulose-based paper substrates with six distinct fiber microstructures, including natural fibers (cellulose I) and viscose fibers (cellulose II), forming a conductive sensing layer. The sensor, featuring a sandwich structure with the core sensing layer and cellulose paper-based encapsulation layers, demonstrates high sensitivity (36.87 kPa − 1for 0–1.3 kPa), 11.39 kPa − 1 for 1.3–60 kPa, 1.25 kPa − 1 for 60–79 kPa), a wide pressure range (0–79 kPa), a lower detection limit (3.7 Pa), and fast response/recovery times (113 ms/81 ms). The sensor also shows excellent cyclic stability and can detect both dynamic and static pressures, making it suitable for monitoring physiological signals such as speech vibrations, finger movements, and wrist pulses. Significantly, this sensor is fully biodegradable under natural conditions within 58 days, offering an environmentally sustainable and cost-effective solution for the future of wearable electronics.

Novel holocellulose porous separator from Camellia Oleifera shells for sodium-ion batteries

Luowen Sun,Jiayi Zhong,Hongyang Zhou,Xiaoqi Liu,Jin Gu,Chuanshuang Hu,Xiuyi Lin

Camellia oleifera shells (COS) are agricultural by-products that commonly discarded and burned, causing pollution to the environment. Due to their high holocellulose content, COS present a promising and cost-effective biomass resource, retaining both cellulose and hemicellulose. Leveraging this potential, holocellulose separators were fabricated via dissolution-regeneration and nonsolvent-based phase separation methods. The obtained holocellulose separator demonstrated a high porosity rate of 68.2 %, good thermal stability (to 190°C) and high ionic conductivity in sodium-ion batteries (2.38 mS/cm). Furthermore, the battery assembled with the holocellulose separator exhibited higher specific capacity and better stability compared to those using glass fiber separators, highlighting its potential for sustainable and high-value applications.

P/N/S synergistic flame retardant holocellulose nanofibrils efficiently pretreated from ternary deep eutectic solvents

Jierui Ye,Yuebing Gao,Qingtian Xu,Zhenfu Jin,Guomin Wu,Siqun Wang,Zengkun Cai,Ke Yang,Qiang Wu,Qian Li

Cellulose nanofibrils (CNFs) have widely attracted significant attention due to the excellent mechanical performance, biodegradability, and high surface functionality. However, the high flammability of CNFs commonly restricts their wider application. In this study, the intrinsically flame-resistant holocellulose nanofibrils (HCNFs, which is rich in both cellulose and hemicellulose) were obtained from bamboo under pretreatment using a highly efficient ternary deep eutectic solvent (TDES) and subsequential mechanical homogenization. The phytates and sulfate-containing HCNFs (PHCNFs) displayed nanofibril diameter of 3–5 nm and high aspect ratio of (∼500), and the aqueous suspension exhibited colloidal stability and high transmittance. The PHCNF films exhibited excellent fire resistance, mechanical and optical properties. Compared with raw HCNF, the limiting oxygen index (LOI) of PHCNF-120 film was up to 52.5 %, and the total heat release (THR) and peak heat release rate (PHRR) of PHCNF-120 films were significantly reduced by 92.2 % and 82.4 %, respectively. The flame retardant mechanism was attributed to the synergistic effect of P/N/S in both condensed phase and gaseous phases during the burning process. This work provides a novel, efficient strategy for developing eco-friendly flame-resistant and fireproof holocellulose-based nanomaterials.

Preparation of biodegradable composite films based on carboxymethylated holocellulose from wheat straw

Guozhi Fan,Qiao Peng,Yi Chen,Yifei Long,Juan Bai,Guangsen Song,Qunpeng Cheng

Holocellulose was extracted from wheat straw and catalytically transformed into carboxymethylated holocellulose (CMHCS) to prepare a biodegradable composite film. By changing the type and amount of catalyst, the carboxymethylation of the holocellulose was optimized with respect to the degree of substitution (DS). A high DS of 2.46 was achieved in the presence of a cocatalyst composed of polyethylene glycol and cetyltrimethylammonium bromide. The effect of DS on the properties of CMHCS-derived biodegradable composite films was further investigated. Compared to pristine holocellulose, the mechanical properties of the composite film were significantly improved and increased with increasing DS. The tensile strength , elongation at break, and Young's modulus increased from 6.58 MPa, 51.4 %, and 26.13 MPa for the unmodified holocellulose-based composite film to 14.81 MPa, 89.36 %, and 81.73 MPa for the film derived from the CMHCS with a DS of 2.46. The biodegradability of the composite film was assessed under soil burial biodisintegration conditions and reached 71.5 % degradation after 45 d. Additionally, a possible degradation process for the composite film was proposed. The results indicated that the CMHCS-derived composite film has good comprehensive performance, and CMHCS is expected to be applied in the field of biodegradable composite materials.

An all-fibrous, permeable, adhesive, and stretchable self-powered electronic skin for sign language recognition

Fan Chen,Xian Song,Jingjing Fu,Jiaheng Liang,Junhua Zhou,Jiehua Cai,Yufei Zhang,Mengjia Zhu,Yichun Ding,Jinxing Jiang,Zijian Chen,Youchao Qi,Zhihao Zhou,Qiyao Huang,Yingying Zhang,Zijian Zheng

Self-powered human motion electronic skins (E-skins) hold significant potential for intelligent sports, healthcare, and human–machine interactions. However, the limited permeability to air and moisture, along with poor stretchability, impedes the wearing comfort, long-term application, and skin compliance of self-powered E-skins. Here, we present an all-fibrous, permeable, adhesive, and intrinsically stretchable electronic skin (PASE-skin). The PASE-skin employs core-sheath fiber mats, liquid-metal-fiber mats, and acrylic fiber mats as the triboelectric layer, electrode layer, and skin adhesive layer, respectively, to achieve an all-fibrous and intrinsically stretchable structure. Such a material and structural design simultaneously offer exceptional stretchability, minimal residual strain, textile-like breathability, skin adhesion, biocompatibility, and good sensing performance. The core-sheath structure increases the stretchability of the triboelectric layer threefold, from 200% to 600%. The liquid-metal-fiber mat electrode maintains stable conductivity even under extreme strains (900%) and numerous stretching cycles (10 000 times at 100% strain). The E-skin generates significant triboelectric outputs and maintains stable sensing performance up to 450% strain. Consequently, we have developed a 5-channel human motion sensing system based on PASE-skin, capable of real-time sign language recognition assisted by signal processing and machine learning algorithms. The PASE-skin is poised to make a substantial impact on the development of self-powered human motion E-skins and offers novel insights into the field of sign language recognition.

TEMPO-mediated oxidation of corncob holocellulose and its influences on paper properties

Weitao He,Qi Sun,Xianliang Song

In this study, the agricultural by-products of corn production (corncobs) were ground into a powder form. Then, the powder was treated with sodium chlorite to remove the lignin, and the remaining holocellulose was optionally modified with 2,2,6,6-tetramethyl-1-piperidinyloxy (TEMPO)-mediated oxidation. The resulting product was examined using an elemental analysis, along with Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). The effects of the oxidation time and dosages of the TEMPO on the paper’s physical properties were investigated. The results indicated that the TEMPO-mediated oxidized corncob holocellulose had the ability to improve the properties of both paper and recycled paper. When 1.0% oxidized holocellulose was used, the resulting tensile index, burst index, and folding endurance were increased by 4.16%, 8.63%, and 50.71%, respectively, compared with the control paper. The SEM analysis indicated that the bonding between fibers was improved by adding oxidized corncob holocellulose. Compared with the control paper, it was determined that the proportion of mesopore within the fibers increased and the bonding of the C–O bonds increased in the paper with the oxidized corncob holocellulose. The results of this study may potentially provide guidance for the future high value-added application of corncobs as a paper strengthening agent.

Ultralight Industrial Bamboo Residue-Derived Holocellulose Thermal Insulation Aerogels with Hydrophobic and Fire Resistant Properties

Hanxiao Huang,Yunshui Yu,Yan Qing,Xiaofeng Zhang,Jia Cui,Hankun Wang

In this study, water-soluble ammonium polyphosphate- (APP) and methyl trimethoxysilane (MTMS)-modified industrial bamboo residue (IBR)-derived holocellulose nanofibrils (HCNF/APP/MTMS) were used as the raw materials to prepare aerogels in a freeze-drying process. Synthetically modified aerogels were confirmed by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, and thermal stability measurements. As-prepared HCNF/APP/MTMS aerogels showed themselves to be soft and flexible. The scanning electron microscopy (SEM) analysis showed that the foam-like structure translates into a 3D network structure from HCNF aerogels to HCNF/APP/MTMS aerogels. The compressive modules of the HCNF/APP/MTMS aerogels were decreased from 38 kPa to 8.9 kPa with a density in the range of 12.04–28.54 kg/m3, which was due to the structural change caused by the addition of APP and MTMS. Compared with HCNF aerogels, HCNF/APP/MTMS aerogels showed a high hydrophobicity, in which the water contact angle was 130°, and great flame retardant properties. The peak of heat release rate (pHRR) and total smoke production (TSP) decreased from 466.6 to 219.1 kW/m2and 0.18 to 0.04 m2, respectively, meanwhile, the fire growth rate (FIGRA) decreased to 8.76 kW/s·m2. The thermal conductivity of the HCNF/APP/MTMS aerogels was 0.039 W/m·K. All results indicated the prepared aerogels should be expected to show great potential for thermally insulative materials. Keywords:industrial bamboo residue;holocellulose aerogel;hydrophobicity;fire resistance;thermal insulation material

All-cellulose composites with ultra-high mechanical properties prepared through using straw cellulose fiber

Xiao Wei,Wei Wei,Yu-hu Cui,Ting-ju Lu,Man Jiang,Zuo-wan Zhou,Yong Wang

All-cellulose composites (ACCs) materials exhibit excellent mechanical properties and attract much attention of researchers. In this work, raw straw cellulose fiber (R-SCF), alkali-treated SCF (N-SCF) and activated SCF (A-SCF) were used to prepare the ACCs, respectively. The results demonstrated that although the three SCFs exhibited similar crystalline structures, i.e. cellulose I, they exhibited different surface morphologies. Morphological characterization about the cryogenically fractured surfaces and the tensile-fractured surfaces of the ACCs, which were prepared through mixing SCF into the microcrystalline cellulose (MCC) solution and then precipitated, clearly demonstrated that the ACCs were a material with a multiphase structure. The mechanical properties of the ACCs were greatly dependent upon the interfacial adhesion between the SCF and the regenerated MCC (RMCC). Ultra-high tensile strength (650.2 MPa) was achieved for the ACCs containing the A-SCF, which was the highest tensile strength reported in the literatures for the isotropic ACCs. The reinforcement mechanism was then analyzed. This work provides new insight on preparing the ACCs with ultrahigh mechanical properties.

All-fiber wearable energy harvesting and storage system based on lamellar structural MXene

Mengying Du,Guoqing Zu,Chuanyu Sun,Fan Ye,Xijia Yang

With the trend towards slimmer and smaller wearable smart electronic devices, there is a growing need for lightweight, flexible, and eco-friendly power sources. Herein, we report a wearable, self-charging energy storage device based on triboelectric nanogenerator (TENG) for energy-harvesting and zinc-ion hybrid capacitor for energy-storage. The all-fiber-structured TENG is constructed by using ethyl cellulose/polyvinylpyrrolidone (EC/PVP) as the positive friction layer and MXene-doped polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) with strong electronegativity as the negative friction layer via electrostatic spinning. Particularly, the TENG possesses achieving a peak power density of 830 mW m −2 at a load resistance of 10 8 Ω. In addition, MnO 2 /carbon cloth (CC) cathode, activated carbon anode and ZnCl 2 @MnSO 4 /PVA electrolyte were assembled for a zinc-ion hybrid capacitor (MA-SC), which exhibits excellent electrochemical performance, with a specific capacitance of 493.79 mF cm −2 at 2 mA cm −2 . The MA-SC demonstrates high energy density of 341.8 μWh cm −2 at power density of 5.56 mW cm −2 , which is very suitable as an energy storage device. The MA-SC and TENG can be assembled to the power textile that integrates into garments, enabling the harvest and storage of mechanical energy generated by the human body. Therefore, this integrated self-charging power textile holds great promising applications in wearable electronics.
