Huge Thermal Enhancement of Surface-Dominant Quasi-2D Upconversion Nanoflakes

Zhaojie Sun,Yunfei Shang,Tong Chen,Shuwei Hao,Wei Shao,Dongyan Tang,Chunhui Yang

Long-term thermal quenching of upconversion (UC) limits the usage of UC materials in nanothermometers, lighting phosphors, etc. Although UC thermal enhancement has been achieved through thermal alleviation of surface quenching, the regulation of the balance between internal multiphonon nonradiative relaxation-induced thermal quenching and external surface quencher release-induced thermal enhancement is still a big challenge. Here, we demonstrate a new strategy to achieve huge UC thermal enhancement by constructing surface-dominant quasi-2D KLu2F7:20%Yb3+/2%Er3+@KLu2F7 core–shell nanoflakes with an ultrathin thickness of 1.5 nm. The surface-dominant design enables enhancements of ∼820-fold at the 523 nm band and ∼304-fold in total as the temperature increases from 303 to 463 K. Similar huge UC thermal enhancements are also observed in Ho3+ (∼383-fold)- and Tm3+ (∼324-fold)-doped nanoflakes. Higher relative and absolute sensitivities of the thermally coupled state pairs (Er3+:2H11/2/4S3/2) with respective plateau values of 0.940% K–1 (303 K) and 0.509% K–1 (463 K) are achieved, which obviously outperform the thermal-quenching NaYF4:20%Yb3+/2%Er3+@NaYF4 nanoparticles. Moreover, the highly thermally enhanced nanoflakes enable the development of temperature-dependent anticounterfeiting inks and encryption, favoring the high-temperature usage of luminescence materials.

Enhanced efficiency of quasi-two-dimensional perovskite light-emitting diodes through the incorporation of a Ti3C2Tx-doped emissive layer

Wang Zhenyang,Zhang Hui,Chen Zhixing,Zhang Xingyue,Zhou Yuanming,Mei Fei

The recent attention accorded to perovskite light-emitting diodes (PeLEDs) can be attributed to their exceptional optoelectronic characteristics. In this paper, the perovskite emissive layer (EML) modified by two-dimensional material Ti 3 C 2 T x MXene was explored with the aim of improving the morphology of perovskite films and the luminescence efficiency of PeLEDs. A doping concentration of 0.2 mM Ti 3 C 2 T x yielded optimal results for the PeLEDs, with a maximum luminance of 8317 cd/m 2 and a maximum current efficiency (CE) of 6.63 cd/A, representing a 200 and 103% enhancement, respectively, in comparison to the reference device lacking Ti 3 C 2 T x . It has been evidenced that doping Ti 3 C 2 T x MXene plays the role of enhancing the morphology of perovskite films and passivating the defects present in these films. Furthermore, Ti 3 C 2 T x facilitates the exciton recombination efficiency, enhances the radiative recombination of the emissive layer and thus improves the optoelectronic efficiency of the PeLEDs. This work presents novel concepts for the utilization of MXene in PeLEDs.

Quasi-2D Inorganic CsPbBr3 Perovskite for Efficient and Stable Light-Emitting Diodes

Yuequn Shang,Gang Li,Weimin Liu,Zhijun Ning

Metal halide perovskites are rising as a competitive material for next-generation light-emitting diodes (LEDs). However, the development of perovskite LEDs is impeded by their fast carriers diffusion and poor stability in bias condition. Herein, quasi-2D CsPbBr 3 quantum wells homogeneously surrounded by inorganic crystalline Cs 4 PbBr 6 of large bandgap are grown. The centralization of carriers in nanoregion facilitates radiative recombination and brings much enhanced luminescence quantum yield. The external quantum efficiency and luminescence intensity of the LEDs based on this nanocomposite are one order of magnitude higher than the conventional low-dimensional perovskite. Meanwhile, the use of inorganic nanocomposite materials brings much improved device operation lifetime under constant electrical field.

Inkjet-Printed Full-Color Matrix Quasi-Two-Dimensional Perovskite Light-Emitting Diodes

Junjie Wang,Danyang Li,Lan Mu,Miaozi Li,Yu Luo,Binbin Zhang,Chaohuang Mai,Biao Guo,Linfeng Lan,Jian Wang,Hin-Lap Yip,Junbiao Peng

Full-color matrix devices based on perovskite light-emitting diodes (PeLEDs) formed via inkjet printing are increasingly attractive due to their tunable emission, high color purity, and low cost. A key challenge for realizing PeLED matrix devices is achieving high-quality perovskite films with a favorable emission structure via inkjet printing techniques. In this work, a narrow phase distribution, high-quality quasi-two-dimensional (quasi-2D) perovskite film without a “coffee ring” was obtained via the introduction of a phenylbutylammonium cation into the perovskite and the use of a vacuum-assisted quick-drying process. Relatively efficient emissions of red, green, and blue (RGB) uniform quasi-2D perovskite films with high photoluminescence quantum yields were cast by the inkjet printing technique. The RGB monochrome perovskite matrix devices with 120 pixel-per-inch resolution exhibited electroluminescence, with maximum external quantum efficiencies of 3.5, 3.4, and 1.0% (for red, green, and blue light emissions, respectively). Furthermore, a full-color perovskite matrix device with a color gamut of 102% (NTSC 1931) was realized. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first report of a full-color perovskite matrix device formed by inkjet printing.

A multifunctional interface optimization strategy for efficient Quasi-2D blue perovskite Light-Emitting diodes

Yuliang Ye,Zhou Cui,Zunxian Yang,Zhiwei Zeng,Zongyi Meng,Hongyi Hong,Songwei Ye,Zhiming Cheng,Qianting Lan,Jiaxiang Wang,Ye Chen,Hui Zhang,Yuting Bai,Zhanlin Yang,Jiajie Hong,Xudong Jiang,Benfang Liu,Baisheng Sa,Fushan Li,Tailiang Guo,Zhenzhen Weng,Yongyi Chen

Domain distribution, defect density as well as carrier transport all exert some great impact on the performance of quasi-two-dimensional (quasi-2D) perovskites light emitting diodes (PeLEDs). Herein, the novelty multifunctional metformin hydrochloride (MFCl) buried passivated layer was introduced to optimize the crystal dynamics, surface morphology, and electro-luminescent properties of the quasi-2D perovskites. On the one hand, MF ion to some extent optimized the domain distribution just by both decreasing the n = 2 phase and increasing the three-dimensional (3D) phase, which facilitated the charge funnelling. On the other hand, by combining MFCl with PSS or PSS-Na, the energy level of the hole transport layer was effectively adjusted, resulting in an obvious reduction of the injection barrier. As a result, the MFCl-optimized blue quasi-2D PeLEDs with the maximum external quantum efficiency of 5.22 % was achieved, which is 3.6 times higher than that of the device without the MFCl treatment. This work provided favourable strategy for the performance enhancement of blue quasi-2D PeLEDs, in which a multifunction interface was introduced to synchronously improve the phase distribution as well as the defect passivation of quasi-2D perovskite, meanwhile all of those further promoted the charge transportation.

Highly efficient and stable quasi two-dimensional perovskite solar cells via synergistic effect of dual additives

Wenbo Ma,Zhenlong Zhang,Yuefeng Liu,Huiping Gao,Yanli Mao

Recently, quasi two-dimensional (Q-2D) perovskites with alternating cations in the interlayer space ( ACI ) have attracted more attentions owing to their elevated stability compared with three-dimensional (3D) analogs. While the efficiency of the devices derived from Q-2D perovskites is much smaller than that based on 3D perovskites. Here, we utilized urea and methoxyamine hydrochloride (MOAH) dual additives to acquire high quality Q-2D ACI perovskite GA(MA) 5 Pb 5 I 16 (GA = guanidinium, MA = methylammonium) films. The efficiency of the perovskite solar cells (PSCs) derived from the Q-2D perovskite films induced by the synergistic effect of urea and MOAH dual additives increases to 20.32% from 17.21% for the devices without additive. This efficiency enhancement could be attributed to the enlarged grain size, improved crystallinity, optimized quantum well thickness distribution, and reduced trap states of the perovskite films. Moreover, the solar cells with dual additives present improved stability. The efficiency of devices with dual additives holds 95% of the original value after storage for 1600 h in ambient air. These results prove that the synergistic effect of urea and MOAH is an effective method to achieve highly efficient and stable Q-2D PSCs.

Regulating the continuous and concentrated distribution of Quasi-2D perovskite phases to achieve Sky-Blue Light-Emitting diodes with efficiency approaching 17%

Zhiqiang Bao,Shilei Yu,Xiaoyang Guo,Yunpeng Wang,Ying Lv,Deyue Zou,Li Song,Xingyuan Liu

Blue perovskite light-emitting diodes (PeLEDs) are increasingly crucial for manufacturing high-definition full-color displays due to their outstanding electroluminescent properties. Quasi-two-dimensional (quasi-2D) perovskite stands out as the most promising material for blue light-emitting layer, given its robust quantum/dielectric confinement. In this study, we present the preparation of PeLEDs with a tunable blue emission wavelength using pure bromide perovskite components by adjusting the content of halogenated organic ammonium bromide [2-bromoethylamine hydrobromide (BEABr)]. The bifunctional ligand BEABr not only achieves an excellent phase distribution of quasi-2D perovskite but also reduces the weak van der Waals gap between individual perovskite layers, facilitating effective energy transfer in perovskite films. Additionally, the bifunctional groups passivate perovskite defects and inhibit phase separation, leading to efficient and stable sky-blue luminescence. The BEABr-doped sky-blue PeLED demonstrated superior device performance, achieving a maximum external quantum efficiency of 16.98 % at 493 nm. This work serves as inspiration for further exploration of efficient and stable commercial blue PeLED devices.

Ion migration and dark current suppression in quasi-2D perovskite-based X-ray detectors

Zhenting Yang,Aimiao Qin,Haiqing Qin,Zhenlin Li,Yong Xiang,Hao Liu,Jinyu Qiu,Xinyu Wang

Cesium-based lead-free double perovskite materials (Cs2AgBiBr6) have garnered significant attention in the X-ray detection field due to their environment friendly characteristics. However, their substantial ion migration properties lead to large dark currents and detection limits in Cs2AgBiBr6-based X-ray detectors, restricting the detection performance of the device. In terms of process technology, ultrasonic spraying is more suitable than a spin-coating method for fabricating large-area, micron-scale perovskite thick films, with higher cost-effectiveness, which is crucial for X-ray detection. This work introduces a BA+ (BA+ = CH3CH2CH2CH2NH3+, n-butyl) source into the precursor solution and employs ultrasonic spraying to fabricate quasi-two-dimensional structured polycrystalline (BA)2Cs9Ag5Bi5Br31 perovskite thick films, developing a low-cost, eco-friendly X-ray detector with low dark current density and low detection limit. Characterization results reveal that the ion migration activation energy of (BA)2Cs9Ag5Bi5Br31 reaches 419 meV, approximately 17% higher than that of traditional three-dimensional perovskites, effectively suppressing perovskite ion migration and subsequently reducing the dark current. The (BA)2Cs9Ag5Bi5Br31-based X-ray detectors exhibit high resistivity (about 1.75 × 1010 Ω cm), low dark current density (66 nA cm−2), minimal dark current drift (0.016 pA cm−1 s−1 V−1), and detection limit (138 nGyair s−1), holding considerable promise for applications in low-noise, low-dose X-ray detection.

Amine-Terminated Carbon Dots Linking Hole Transport Layer and Vertically Oriented Quasi-2D Perovskites through Hydrogen Bonds Enable Efficient LEDs

Wei Dong,Xiaoyu Zhang,Fan Yang,Qingsen Zeng,Wenxu Yin,Wei Zhang,Haoran Wang,Xuyong Yang,Stephen V. Kershaw,Bai Yang,Andrey L. Rogach,Weitao Zheng

Close attention to the interfaces of solution-processed metal halide perovskite-based light-emitting devices (LEDs) is crucial for their optimal performance. Solution processing of these devices typically leads to the formation of van der Waals interfaces with a weak connection between different functional layers, leaving great room for improvement in charge transport through strengthening of the interlayer interaction. Here, we have realized a hydrogen-bond-assisted interface that makes use of ultrasmall amine-terminated carbon dots to enhance the interaction between the hole transport layer made of PEDOT:PSS and the hybrid lead bromide perovskite emitting layer, which not only promotes the hole injection efficiency but also orients the quasi-2D perovskite crystals penetrating the vertical direction of the device without any, or very few, horizontal grain boundaries, which has a profound effect on the photophysical and transport properties of the emitting layer. As a result, LEDs based on quasi-2D perovskites show up to 24.5% external quantum efficiency, 80 000 cd m–2 brightness, and over 5-fold extended longevity.

Reduced-Dimensional Engineering toward 2D R-P (OAm)2CsPb2Br7 Perovskite by Metal Ion Enabled Ligands Confinement Effect

Xupeng Gao,Qiang Hu,Xin Li,Po Lu,Yuan Zhong,Xinyu Shen,William W. Yu,Min Lu,Zhennan Wu,Siyao Yu,Xue Bai,Yu Zhang

The dimension is a leading parameter in customization of unique optoelectronic properties of halide perovskite, while it is still challenging to achieve dimension control beyond the well-developed composition regulation-based strategy considering their intrinsic feature of ionic crystal. In this paper, ligands-directed confinement effect is emphasized in rendering the reduced-dimensional engineering of halide perovskite, and quasi-2D (OAm) 2 CsPb 2 Br 7 ( n = 2) nanosheets are obtained by introducing a large amount of metal ions. As a representation, with Mg 2+ participation, the initial adsorption of organic ligands (i.e., OA and OAm) to inorganic components (i.e., [PbBr 6 ] 4− ) is promoted, conferring a ligands-directed surface reconstruction to form the lamellar structure composed of alternate organic and inorganic layers. Namely, the inorganic–organic lamellar ensemble will play as a soft template, which effectively restricts the growth of [PbBr 6 ] 4− in the c -axis direction even after the Cs-OA injection, thus producing the anisotropic layered perovskite of (OAm) 2 CsPb 2 Br 7 from CsPbBr 3 scenario. Notably, such reduced-dimensional engineering enables a remarkable luminescence tailoring, of which the deep blue emission centered at 439 nm is achieved. In addition, benefiting from such universal strategy, the luminescence is also dependent on the species of introduced metal ions (e.g., Ca 2+ , Co 2+ , Sr 2+ , and Mn 2+ ).

Enhanced efficiency and stability of Dion–Jacobson quasi-two-dimensional perovskite solar cells by additive

Wenbo Ma,Zhenlong Zhang,Miao Kang,Yuefeng Liu,Huafang Zhang,Huiping Gao,Yanli Mao

Dion–Jacobson (DJ) quasi-two-dimensional (quasi-2D) perovskite solar cells (PSCs) have attracted increasing attention owing to their potential stability compared with the Ruddlesden-Popper (RP) phase. It is known that the low efficiency and poor thermal stability retard the application of quasi-2D PSCs. Here, DJ quasi-2D perovskite films based on propane-1.3-diammonium (PDA) spacer cations were prepared by a hot casting technique. Ionic liquid additive of 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium tetrafluoroborate (BMIMBF4) was introduced into the quasi-2D perovskite precursor solution to improve the crystal quality and morphology of the films. The quasi-2D PSCs with BMIMBF4 achieved an optimal power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 14.07%, which is higher than the 12.45% of the control devices. The impressive 1.17 V high open-circuit voltage and 14.07% efficiency are the highest values for the reported PDA-based n–i–p type devices. Moreover, the thermal stability of the solar cells was significantly enhanced by the addition of BMIMBF4. The PCE of the devices with BMIMBF4 maintains 72% of the initial value after annealing at 85 °C for 120 h, while the PCE of control devices drops to 19% of the initial value. These results prove that the introduction of ionic liquid BMIMBF4 is a pragmatic method to elevate the efficiency and thermal stability of quasi-2D PSCs.

Orientation Regulation of Tin-Based Reduced-Dimensional Perovskites for Highly Efficient and Stable Photovoltaics

Hongyu Xu,Yuanzhi Jiang,Tingwei He,Saisai Li,Huanhua Wang,Yu Chen,Mingjian Yuan,Jun Chen

Tin-based perovskites have exhibited high potential for efficient photovoltaics application due to their outstanding optoelectrical properties. However, the extremely undesired instabilities significantly hinders their development and further commercialization process. A novel tin-based reduced-dimensional (quasi-2D) perovskites is reported here by using 5-ammoniumvaleric acid (5-AVA + ) as the organic spacer. It is demonstrated that by introducing appropriate amount of ammonium chloride (NH 4 Cl) as additive, highly vertically oriented tin-based quasi-2D perovskite films are obtained, which is proved through the grazing incidence wide-angle X-ray scattering characterization. In particular, this approach is confirmed to be a universal method to deliver highly vertically oriented tin-based quasi-2D perovskites with various spacers. The highly ordered vertically oriented perovskite films significantly improve the charge collection efficiency between two electrodes. With the optimized NH 4 Cl concentration, the solar cells employing quasi-2D perovskite, AVA 2 FA n −1 Sn n I 3 n +1 (< n > = 5), as light absorbers deliver a power conversion efficiency up to 8.71%. The work paves the way for further employing highly vertically oriented tin-based quasi-2D perovskite films for highly efficient and stable photovoltaics.
