Dense fine-grained pure W, W–1.0 wt.%Zr (WZ), W–1.0 wt.%ZrC (WZC) and W–1.0 wt.%Zr–1.0 wt.%ZrC (WZZC) alloys were fabricated by spark plasma sintering . The grains in WZ and WZZC alloys are stable at annealing temperatures below 1400 °C (1 h), while the grains in pure W grow significantly above 1100 °C annealing. The tensile tests indicate that WZ is ductile already at 400 °C, which is about 200 °C lower than that for pure W. WZC exhibits higher hardness at room temperature than pure W. The ultimate tensile strength of WZC at 600 °C is 798 MPa, about 2.6 times that of pure W. Based on microstructural analysis , the good thermal stability of tungsten grains in WZ and WZZC samples is suggested to be originated from the W–Zr–O and/or Zr–C–O particles which are dispersed on or near the grain boundaries of tungsten and inhibit their migration. The improved tensile properties of the WZ, WZC and WZZC alloys originate (i) from the enhanced GB cohesion by Zr micro-alloying and (ii) from dispersion strengthening by nano-sized ZrC particles.

A simple and efficient pathway was developed to synthesize ultrafine grained oxide dispersion strengthened (ODS) Mo alloys doped with nano-scaled oxide particles. Firstly, dispersed La(NO 3 ) 3 or Al(NO 3 ) 3 nanoparticles were introduced into commercial MoO 3 via a solution spraying method. Then, Mo nanopowders containing different amounts of oxides nanoparticles (La 2 O 3 (0%, 0.5%, 1% and 2%) or Al 2 O 3 (0.5%, 1%)) were successfully prepared by reducing the doped MoO 3 with carbon black at 600 °C and 1050 °C, and hydrogen at 800 °C. Due to the high sintering activity of prepared doped Mo nanopowder, after sintering in H 2 at 1300 °C for 3 h, the relative density of sintered products containing 0.5% La 2 O 3 or Al 2 O 3 reached to above 95.4%. Nanostructured ODS Mo alloys with Mo and La 2 O 3 (or Al 2 O 3 ) grain sizes of about 0.5 μm and 75 nm (or 50 nm for Al 2 O 3 ) were successfully prepared at around 1300 °C. The obtained nanostructured Mo-oxides alloys had much high hardness values. For the Mo-La 2 O 3 alloys, the highest value of hardness can reach to 338 HV (1% La 2 O 3 , Mo grain size, 0.51 μm; La 2 O 3 grain size, 71.3 nm; density, 93.0%), while the highest hardness of Mo-Al 2 O 3 alloys reached to 385 HV (1% Al 2 O 3 , Mo grain size, 0.55 μm; Al 2 O 3 grain size, 55.9 nm; density, 94.6%), which were much higher than the ODS-Mo alloys prepared from the traditional methods. This method could also have great potential for industrially producing nanostructured ODS Mo alloys and W alloys.

The strengthening effect of particle-reinforced copper-based composites mainly depends on the interfacial bonding strength and dispersibility of the reinforcement. However, agglomeration of nanoparticles , as a bottleneck, restricts Orowan's strengthening mechanism. Different from the traditional preparation method for stacked nanoparticles, a hydrothermal method was developed to prepare interconnected bridge-like MoO 2 quantum dots . Based on the interconnected structure and the brittleness of MoO 2 , it can be easily broken and uniformly dispersed into copper matrix during the ball milling process. Due to the dispersion strengthening effect and coherence of the interface between MoO 2 and copper, these factors improve the mechanical performance of the composite material synergistically, resulting in simultaneous increases in YS (145.76 MPa), UTS (321.67 MPa), and hardness (94.79 Hv). The effectiveness of YS and UTS enhancement is 234% and 41%, respectively, while maintaining appropriate elongation (20.29%) and conductivity (94.9 IACS). MoO 2 quantum dots are used for the first time in this work as particle reinforcements , and we demonstrate that the addition of oxide quantum dots to metal matrix composites can significantly enhance the mechanical properties of the composites by changing the morphology of the quantum dots.

As a promising route to prepare ultrafine-grained or nanocrystalline materials, powder metallurgy has long been used to produce some metal materials with desirable microstructure. However, the challenges of rapid grain growth and torpid densification during this process always frustrate the endeavor. Especially, for the oxide dispersion strengthened (ODS) alloy, although grain growth is suppressed greatly by the traditional oxide addition, the densification of metal matrix is also hindered, especially at low temperature. To overcome such limitation, exploring a kind of oxide that can be used as both grain growth inhibitor and sintering accelerator for metal matrix will be significant. In this work, it is found that accelerated sintering can be achieved in Mo-ZrO 2 system at low temperature. The kinetic simulation results indicate that although the volume diffusion has been found to be the dominant sintering mechanism for Mo-ZrO 2 system, a significant contribution from grain boundary diffusion is also identified, which is the essential mechanism behind the accelerated sintering of this system at low temperature. Besides, the grain boundary migration also can be significantly restricted by the intergranular ZrO 2 particles. After sintering at only 1480 °C in the absence of external pressure assistance and subsequent hot forging , nanocrystalline microstructure with an average grain size of 480 nm can be obtained. The ZrO 2 second-phase particles are uniformly distributed at grain interior and grain boundaries, enhancing the recrystallization temperature and microstructural stability of metal matrix, which renders the prepared Mo-ZrO 2 alloy a stable high-strength performance characteristic even under high temperatures.

Introduction of hard phases into soft metal coatings is a widely used strategy to improve the tribological behavior and antiwear properties during current-carrying friction. In this work, we developed silver (Ag) composite coatings reinforced with nanodiamonds (NDs) using a self-devoloped rotating spray deposition technology. The composite coatings, with a 0–10 g/L rage concentrations of NDs, were comprehensively characterized for morphology, chemical composition, hardness, and current-carrying tribological behavior and antiwear properties. Thanks to the unique advantages of our fabrication technique, the coatings show a dense structure with strong interfacial bonding both at the coating-copper substrate interface and between the Ag matrix and NDs in composite coatings. The addition of NDs not only maintains excellent electrical conductivity (minimum 98.1 %ICAS) but also boosts microhardness to 169 HV. Uniformly dispersed NDs effectively enhance the tribological behavior and wear resistance, keeping the friction coefficient stable at 0.1–0.2 and reducing the wear rate significantly with the shallowest wear track measuring only 6 μm. Finally, the worn subsurface structure of wear tracks was analysized to confirm the good bonding between NDs and the Ag matrix, as well as the dispersion-strengthening effect of NDs within the Ag matrix and the plastic deformation mechanism of Ag during current-carrying friction. This study not only enriches the enhancing mechanism in hard-phase-reinforced composites but also provides new insights and approaches for the development of electric contact coating materials.

The effects of carbon nanotube aspect ratio ( R ) on mechanical properties of CNT/Al composites containing 0–2.0 wt% CNTs are studied. The optimum carbon nanotube (CNT) reinforced aluminum (Al) composites are fabricated at 580 °C for 1 h under 60 MPa, and subsequently hot extruded at 480 °C. CNT addition within 0.5 wt% can increase the strength significantly without plasticity loss, which overcomes the dilemma of strength and toughness. Strength and hardness increase significantly due to the uniformly distributed CNTs in Al matrix within a content of 1.0 wt%. Quantitatively fitting results also show that the main strengthening mechanism of CNT/Al composites should be dispersion strengthening rather than load transfer. The R , which is very crucial for load transfer theory, has only small effects on the mechanical properties of CNT/Al composites. The calculated CNTs diameters are close to the experimental used ones.

In this paper, high density nanocrystalline W with uniform dispersion of nanosized oxide particles was fabricated via a dissolution-precipitation process by well controlled high-energy ball milling of the raw powder materials of Y 2 O 3 , Ti and W and the subsequent spark plasma sintering (SPS). XRD and TEM analysis revealed that the Y 2 O 3 and Ti were dissolved in W matrix during the high-energy ball milling and the Y 2 Ti 2 O 7 particles were precipitated in the SPS process, resulting in the refinement in both W grains and oxide particles. The average grain size of W is 67 nm. The average size of particles in grain interior and at grain boundaries is 8.5 nm and 16.4 nm, respectively. The Vickers microhardness of such a nanostructured W alloy is as high as 1441 Hv, which is 2–3 times that of the ever reported W alloys. Such a dissolution-precipitation process offers a general pathway for manufacturing nanocrystalline refractory metals with dispersion of nanoscale oxides in a controllable manner.

Y 2 O 3 dispersion-strengthened copper alloy prepared by mechanical alloying (MA) exhibits a high potential to be used as heat-sink materials in the fusion reactor. However, the feasibility of mass-production of the alloy by MA is still suspicious due to the low efficiency and the introduction of impurity elements. In this work, we prepared Y 2 O 3 dispersion-strengthened copper alloy by spray drying, a method suitable for large-scale production with almost no introduction of impurities. Microstructural investigations found that high-density Y 2 O 3 nanoparticles with the size of ∼9 nm are successfully introduced into the copper matrix by spray drying, which greatly refines the grain and inhibits the recrystallization behavior of the alloy. Moreover, most Y 2 O 3 nanoparticles share a coherent interface with the matrix, and as the Y 2 O 3 particles grow, the coherent interfaces transform into semi-coherent interfaces, with an orientation relationship of (11−1) Cu //(422) Y2O3 . The introduction of Y 2 O 3 nanoparticles greatly enhances the strength of the copper matrix by inhibiting the moving of the dislocations and grain boundaries, and a good combination of hardness (114 HV), strength (326.5 MPa), ductility (8.5 %) and electrical conductivity (85.3 %IACS) was achieved in the Cu-2Y 2 O 3 (wt%) alloy. This work proves the feasibility of introducing nano-scale Y 2 O 3 particles into the copper matrix by spray drying, however, the experimental parameters need to be carefully controlled to prevent agglomeration of Y 2 O 3 dispersoids. Large-scale production of ODS-Cu alloys for the fusion reactor may be realized through spray drying in the future.

Nanoparticles or precipitates are long used to block dislocations to strengthen metals. However, this strengthening mechanism unavoidably adds stress concentrations at the obstacles, instigating crack initiation that hampers ductility. Here, we demonstrate a strategy that replaces the traditional crystalline dispersions with dense amorphous nanoparticles, which is made possible via laser powder bed fusion. Porosity-free copper-based nanocomposites are demonstrated as a prototype, consisting of densely and uniformly distributed amorphous boron–carbide nanoparticles (~47 nm in average diameter, up to 12% volume fraction) via an in situ nanofragmentation and melt-quench process. The amorphous nanoparticles act as dislocation sinks, thereby alleviating local stress concentration. They also self-harden along with tensile deformation, promoting strain hardening and therefore homogeneous plastic flow. The as-built composite achieves a tensile strength of more than one gigapascal and a total elongation of approximately 10%, more than twice that of its crystalline dispersion counterpart. Defect accumulation is also suppressed upon cyclic deformation of the as-built bulk nanocomposites, delivering a fatigue strength limit (at > 10 7 cycles) of more than 70% of the tensile strength. Our results demonstrate an effective strategy for additive manufacturing of metallic materials with superior properties.
