A hydrophobic pervaporation membrane with hierarchical microporosity for high-efficient dehydration of alcohols

Peng Liu,Mengmeng Chen,Yiqiang Ma,Chuan Hu,Qiugen Zhang,Aimei Zhu,Qinglin Liu

Pervaporation is a promising membrane technology for separation of aqueous organic solution particularly azeotrope and close-boiling point compounds. However, most of pervaporation membranes are based on hydrophilic polymers that suffer decline of separation performance due to their swelling in aqueous solution. Here we present a copolymer synthetic strategy for preparation of hydrophobic polymer pervaporation membrane with hierarchical porosity via uniting both rigid and flexible segments. The synthesized membrane has well-defined micropores and high free volume faction of 8.03% with cavity size of 0.476 nm, and demonstrate exceptional performance with high permeability and selectivity for dehydration of alcohols. In the pervaporation of ethanol-water azeotrope, the membrane displays the high permeabtion flux of 74.6 μm kg m −2  h −1 and water selectivity of 34 (separation factor of 732) at 30 °C. The developed strategy has excellent potential for synthesizing copolymers for high-efficient pervaporation membranes.

Hierarchically ordered porous carbon with atomically dispersed cobalt for oxidative esterification of furfural

Wen Yao,Chenghong Hu,Yajie Zhang,Hao Li,Fengliang Wang,Kui Shen,Liyu Chen,Yingwei Li

Nitrogen-rich zeolitic imidazolate frameworks (ZIFs) are ideal precursors for the synthesis of metal single atoms anchored on N-doped carbon. However, the microporous structures of conventional ZIFs lead to low mass transfer efficiency and low metal utilization of their derivatives. Here, we construct a composite of Co single atoms anchored on nitrogen-doped carbon with a three-dimensional ordered macroporous structure (Co-SA/3DOM-NC) by two-step pyrolysis of ordered macro/microporous ZnCo-ZIF. Co-SA/3DOM-NC shows high activity in the oxidative esterification of furfural, achieving a 99% yield of methyl 2-furoate under mild reaction conditions, which is significantly superior to the microporous and the Co-nanoparticle counterparts. The high activity of Co-SA/3DOM-NC should be attributed to the CoN4 centers with high intrinsic activity and the ordered macroporous structure, promoting the mass transfer of reactants and accessibility of active sites. Keywords: Heterogeneous catalysis; Hierarchical pores; Ordered macropore; Oxidative esterification reaction; Single-atom catalysts.

Fabrication and characterization of 3D complex hydroxyapatite scaffolds with hierarchical porosity of different features for optimal bioactive performance

Zhichao Chen,Xianglin Zhang,Yang Yang,Kui Zhou,Nicholas Wragg,Yang Liu,Mark Lewis,Changqing Liu

To improve the biological performance of hydroxyapatite scaffolds in bone tissue engineering, graphite was used as porogen to create additional micro/nanoporosity to macroporosity, resulting in hierarchical porosity . For maximum imitation of natural bone structures, scaffolds with different porosity features were fabricated using micron/nano-sized graphite. The sintering profile of graphite treated scaffolds was optimised to reduce the influence of shrinkage. To confirm the porosity features, the micro/nanostructures of scaffolds were characterised by scanning electron microscopy and Brunauer-Emmett-Teller method. Considering that hydroxyapatite is resistant to biodegradation in vivo, the degradation rate of scaffolds in modified simulated body fluid was examined. Furthermore, biological evaluations based on myoblasts were carried out to investigate the influence of porosity features on the essential performance such as adhesion, proliferation and differentiation. The results indicate that the scaffolds with dominant microporosity and little nanoporosity formed inside had high potential for clinical applications due to improved performance in bioactivity.

Highly Efficient Adsorption of Cr(VI) by Mechanically Enhanced Chitosan Oligosaccharide Aerogel with Hierarchical Porosity

Dandan Liu,Hui Zhang,Jinfeng Mei,Xudong Zheng,Jian Rong,Zhongyu Li

A three-dimensional porous aerogel was synthesized by combining soft chitosan oligosaccharide to hard multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) under mild conditions. Owing to the support of MWCNTs, mesopores can be detected on the inner surfaces of the aerogel. The cross-linking by tetraethylenepentamine forms a macropore structure after freeze drying, using water as the template. The hydrogel can bear 30% recoverable compression with the aid of hydrogen bonds between the amide groups. The aerogel exhibits excellent adsorption capabilities for Cr(VI) in water. The adsorption capacity can reach 367.6 mg/g within 100 min. Notably, the aerogel demonstrated an extremely high efficiency in removal for trace Cr(VI). Soluble Cr(VI) of 1 mg/L can be completely removed by the aerogel at a dosage of 0.2 g/L. This work provides a new strategy to synthesize adsorbents with hierarchical pores that exhibit high porosity and a fast mass transfer rate.

Dynamic Tailoring Porosity and Surface Chemistry of Ultramicroporous Carbon Spheres for Highly Selective Post-combustion CO2 Capture

Man Liu,Weiwei Shi,Huili Liu,Yanzhen Guo,Baocheng Yang,Binbin Chang

Carbon capture has emerged as a pivotal carbon neutrality technology for addressing greenhouse effect challenges. Porous carbons are one of the most promising adsorbents for CO2 capture and separation from flue gas, yet their traditional synthesis necessitates inert atmospheres to avoid oxidation, which greatly restricts the large-scale production at a low cost and advanced industrial applications. Herein, we propose an innovative pathway for large-scale fabrication of porous carbons via one-step pyrolysis in an air environment. Porosity and surface chemistry can be concurrently tailored by controlling the air-assisted pyrolysis process, and the optimization mechanism is unveiled in detail. The resultant materials feature well-interconnected hierarchical porosity with highly proportioned ultramicroporosity, uniform spherical morphology, and high surface heteroatom doping levels. By leveraging porosity and surface chemistry, the optimal sample exhibits superior CO2 capture behaviors of satisfactory CO2 uptake and ultrahigh selectivity. CO2/N2 selectivity reaches up to 160 at 0.15 bar and 25 °C, and it still achieves up to 76 at 1.0 bar and 25 °C, ranking it in the top 5% of the reported porous carbons. We explore the correlations between porosity, surface heteroatoms, and CO2 capture behaviors. Porosity has a decisive function on CO2 capture capacity and selectivity, especially ultramicroporosity, and surface heteroatoms doping could have a positive promotion in selectivity caused by extra CO2-philic sites. This work pioneers a feasible approach for large-scale directional design of functional porous carbons through air-assisted pyrolysis under mild conditions.

Tuning the morphology and structure of nanocarbons with activating agents for ultrafast ionic liquid-based supercapacitors

Yongpeng Cui,Huanlei Wang,Nan Mao,Wenhua Yu,Jing Shi,Minghua Huang,Wei Liu,Shougang Chen,Xin Wang

The increasing demand for supercapacitors with high energy and power density has attracted extensive attention in designing advanced carbon materials with high accessible surface area, hierarchical porosity , and 2D/3D morphology. Here, we report a new approach to tune the morphology and structure of the nanocarbons by using methyl cellulose as the precursor. Due to the varying effect of different activating agents, the interconnected sheet-like carbon with a high surface area of up to 2285 m 2  g −1 and a thickness down to ∼4 nm can be obtained. These important characteristics make the nanocarbons demonstrate a high capacitance of 144 F g −1 at 1 A g −1 and 20 °C, and an excellent capacitance retention ratio of 64% at 100 A g −1 in ionic liquid . Because of the high fraction of meso/macropores for nanocarbons, an outstanding capacitance of 116 F g −1 can be achieved at 0 °C, with a high capacitance retention ratio of 39% at 100 A g −1 . A high energy of 16–17 and 9–10 W h kg −1 can be maintained at 20 and 0 °C when the supercapacitor is charged in less than 1s. The excellent electrochemical response of nanocarbons suggests that the proposed preparation process is promising for developing advanced carbon electrodes.

Effect of preparation condition of Mg-Al layered double hydroxides on glyphosate adsorption and process optimization through response surface methodology

Xiaolong Yan,Yuxuan Deng,Wanming Huang,Qijun Zhang,Li Zheng,Junfeng Zhou,Dongsheng He,Jiayu Ma

This study investigated LDHs-MgAl preparation factors on Gly adsorption performance. The single-factor experiments shown that CO 3 2− -type LDHs-400-MgAl prepared under the condition of calcination temperature of 400 °C, calcination time of 3 h, Mg/Al molar ratio of 2:1, synthesis pH of 10, preparation temperature of 30 °C and aging temperature of 25 °C, had better Gly adsorption performance due to its enhanced crystallinity and hierarchical porosity. Moreover, the Gly adsorption process optimization with LDHs-400-MgAl via the response surface methodology (RSM) was studied. The relative error between the actual value and the predicted value obtained from the RSM model is 0.39 % and the determination coefficient (R 2 ) is 0.9987, which means the Gly adsorption process with LDHs-400-MgAl can be predicted by the proposed RSM model. This work integrates material synthesis optimization with process engineering, offering a scalable strategy for Gly removal in complex wastewater matrices.

Innovative bacterial cellulose and UiO-66 composites for superior zinc ion battery separator performance

Tian Zhao,Pengcheng Xiao,Saiqun Nie,Jiangrong Yu,Shilin Peng,Jiayao Chen,Fuli Luo,Yi Chen

Aqueous zinc-ion batteries (AZIBs) face challenges such as Zn dendrite formation and poor cycle stability. Here, we report an ambient-temperature in situ growth strategy to fabricate a bacterial cellulose-metal organic framework composite separator (BC@UiO-66) for AZIBs. In this approach, UiO-66 (a Zr-based MOF) grows uniformly on BC nanofibers, forming a 95 μm-thick film with hierarchical porosity and abundant Lewis acid sites. The resulting BC@UiO-66 separator facilitates Zn2+ diffusion through interconnected nanochannels and promotes uniform Zn deposition, thereby suppressing dendrite growth. A Zn||Zn symmetric cell using BC@UiO-66 operates stably for over 2400 h at 1 mA cm−2 and a Zn||MnO2 full cell retains 162.98 mAh g−1 after 1000 cycles at 1 A g−1 with ∼100% coulombic efficiency. These results demonstrate the efficacy of MOF-cellulose composite separators in extending AZIB cycle life.

Hierarchically heterostructured ceramic cellular-polymer gradient coatings: Synergistic autonomous ice shedding and extreme-environment durability

Xiangming Yang,Haoji Jiang,Yuting Zhong,Yan Liu,Hui Chen

This study hypothesized that engineering ceramic-polymer composites with hierarchical porosity and stress-adaptive silica reservoirs can reconcile the trade-off between icephobicity and mechanical resilience in superhydrophobic coatings, enabling robust anti-icing solutions for aerospace, energy infrastructure, and cryogenic systems. The hierarchical porosity for water confinement and ceramic microspheres for load dissipation is predicted to enable spontaneous ice shedding while resisting abrasive degradation. Methyltrimethoxysilane (MTMS)-tetraethoxysilane (TEOS) co-condensation was leveraged to synthesize mesoporous ceramic microspheres with encapsulated hydrophobic silica reservoirs. Through alternating layer-by-layer spraying, these microspheres were integrated with acrylic resin (AR) to create a gradient modulus coating. The optimized coating achieved ultralow ice adhesion (20.9 ± 0.43 kPa) through nanopore-induced Cassie-state stabilization (contact angle: 161.3 ± 0.31°, hysteresis: 2.3 ± 0.19°). Surface nanopores promoted spontaneous droplet jumping via Laplace pressure differentials and robustly precluded the pinning of supercooled water, thereby triggered ice-droplets self-dislodging via freezing-induced hydrostatic pressure. Mechanical tests demonstrated exceptional durability with <7 % contact angle reduction after sandpaper abrasion, repeated de-icing cycles, tape peeling, acid-base immersion, infrared irradiation, and protracted weathering, attributed to stress-adaptive silica release from fractured ceramic shells. This architecture establishes a materials design paradigm for extreme-environment anti-icing applications.

In-situ Construction of Hierarchical Ultrasmall MOF Aerogels with Tunable Mesopores for Selective Adsorption and Efficient Catalysis

Xiaolong Fang,Tingting Luo,Gang-Gang Chang,Li Mei,Ziwen Li,Yao Yao,Chao Liu,Didi Dong,Xiao-Yu Yang

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have garnered extensive research interest due to their ultrahigh porosity and flexible tunability. However, the predominantly microporous structures of most reported MOFs impose substantial mass transfer resistance and restrict the exposure of active sites, while their powdered form poses a major bottleneck for industrialization. In this work, hierarchical ultrasmall MOF aerogels with micro/mesoporous structures and high specific surface area, HP-UiO-66-NH2-X@WCA are successfully synthesized via an in-situ construction strategy driven by H2O/Ace competitive nucleation. Notably, the fabricated HP-UiO-66-NH2-X@WCA under this solvent-regulated environment effectively exposes more active sites and promotes the rapid diffusion of large molecules due to its ultrasmall nanoparticles (< 25 nm) and tunable interconnected mesopores (3.7 - 21.3 nm). Moreover, HP-UiO-66-NH2-X@WCA exhibits excellent structural stability and elasticity, imparting exceptional durability and convenient recyclability in practical applications. Benefiting from above advantages, HP-UiO-66-NH2-X@WCA demonstrates superior macromolecular selective adsorption and efficient catalytic activity compared to microporous MOF aerogels with larger particle sizes. Furthermore, when HP-UiO-66-NH2-X@WCA is packed into a fixed-bed reactor for continuous-flow catalysis, it exhibits excellent activity and stability over long-term operation. This work offers new insights into the controlled design and fabrication of high-performance hierarchical MOF aerogels for practical adsorption and catalytic applications.

3D Printing of Monolithic Carbon Electrodes with Hierarchical Pores Enabled by Nucleated Resin

Panfeng Wang,Li Zhang,Wenting Xing,Zhaoyang Lu,Xiang Qi,Yongli Chai,Zengbing Zhao

Optical-based additive manufacturing offers a promising approach for the precise fabrication of monolithic carbon electrodes with complex geometries. However, the conventional fabrication process, which involves three sequential steps—3D printing, pyrolysis, and chemical activation—is both time-intensive and technically challenging. In this study, a photosensitive resin incorporating K 2 CO 3 as a pore-forming templates is developed and subsequently photocured into the desired structures via a digital light processing 3D printer. By employing this resin, the chemical activation step is effectively integrated into the pyrolysis process, thereby reducing the overall fabrication procedure from three steps to two. The resulting monolithic carbon structures exhibit hierarchical porosity across four distinct length scales, spanning from the nanometer to the sub-millimeter range. The electrochemical surface area of the 3D-printed monolithic carbon electrode is 7.2 times greater than that of the commercial carbon paper. When applied in a vanadium redox flow cell, the monolithic electrodes demonstrate an energy efficiency improvement of 20.7% compared to solid-wall electrodes and 2.6 times that of the carbon paper electrode.

Sustainable waste Biomass-Derived porous carbons with superior hierarchical porosity for High-Performance CO2 capture

Shen Fumin,Yao Shunyang,Pei Yuanchao,Sun Rubin

The increasing levels of carbon dioxide (CO 2 ) emissions driven by industrial activities highlight the urgent need for the development of efficient and sustainable CO 2 capture technologies. Biomass-derived porous carbons have emerged as promising candidates for CO 2 adsorption due to their low cost, high surface area, and adjustable pore structure. In this study, hierarchically porous carbons (HPCs) were synthesized from waste acer truncatum wood through pre-carbonization and subsequent KOH activation. The synthesis conditions, including activation temperature and activating agent concentration, were optimized to precisely tailor the pore architecture. The resulting HPC exhibited excellent CO 2 adsorption capacities of 7.56 mmol·g⁻ 1 at 0 °C and 4.29 mmol·g⁻ 1 at 25 °C under ambient pressure. Notably, ultramicropores (< 0.7 nm) exhibited a dominant role in CO 2 capture at low pressures, while narrow micropores (< 1.0 nm) contributed significantly across a range of low-pressure conditions. The hierarchical pore structure enhanced CO 2 uptake at higher pressures. Furthermore, the material demonstrated exceptional CO 2 /N 2 selectivity, reaching up to 112 at 0.15 bar and 0 °C, along with good cyclic stability, highlighting its potential in post-combustion CO 2 capture. This work provides a sustainable strategy for converting waste biomass into high-value adsorbents, offering a solution that addresses both environmental concerns and economic feasibility.
