Designing nanoporous Pd catalyst with dual enhancement of thermodynamics and kinetics for formic acid oxidation reaction

Hualei Wang,Cong Xi,Huiming Yin,Yi Ding

Conventional strategies for developing highly efficient electrocatalysts involve enhancing thermodynamics to minimize overpotential and improving kinetics to maximize reaction current. However, current research on Pd-based catalysts for formic acid oxidation reaction (FAOR) mainly focuses on accelerating its kinetics to increase the peak current. This study proposes a catalyst design that can simultaneously improve the kinetics and thermodynamics of FAOR. Specifically, the home-made catalyst (NPG-Pt 1 -Pd 1 ) is obtained by sequentially depositing monolayer Pt and Pd shells on the surface of nanoporous gold (NPG) substrate. Compared with commercial Pd/C, this electrocatalyst exhibits a noticeable negative shift in onset potential (∼100 mV) and a significantly improved peak current (∼6 times). Experimental data and theoretical calculations demonstrate that NPG-Pt 1 -Pd 1 exhibits a comparatively suitable adsorption energy for small molecules, not only reducing the overpotential but also accelerating the reaction rate of FAOR. Moreover, when applied in direct formic acid fuel cells (DFAFC), the NPG-Pt 1 -Pd 1 anode with an exceptionally low Pd loading of 8.5 μg cm −2 , achieves a remarkable power density of 141 mW cm −2 . The power efficiency of Pd is 230 times that of Pd/C (1 mg cm −2 , 73 mW cm −2 ). Therefore, this work provides a new methodology for developing efficient Pd-based FAOR electrocatalysts .

Directional anneal-casting strategy enables mechanically enhanced biomimetic hydrogel for ligament reconstruction

He Zhu,Cheng Wang,Chen Xin,Ziyi Dai,Yican Yang,Yan Li,Mingrui Wang,Yang Zhang,Shouwei Yue,Rong Cai,Kai Qian

Artificial ligaments play a crucial role in replacing injured natural ligaments and facilitating rehabilitation. However, existing artificial ligaments lack real-time strain monitoring capability, which limits personalized rehabilitation guidance. Here, we develop a highly biomimetic and intelligent electronic hydrogel ligament (IEHL) based on polyvinyl alcohol/sodium alginate through a universal directional anneal-casting (DAC) strategy. This innovative approach creates aligned microstructures that overcome conventional hydrogels' limitations of poor structural integrity and inadequate mechanical properties. The IEHL exhibits integrated bionics of microstructure, mechanical parameters and water content closely matching natural ligaments. The efficacy of the IEHL in stabilizing knee joint and monitoring movements is validated through in vivo models, and a wireless monitoring system is developed to detect and analyze ligament strain characteristics in real-time. This IEHL provides a superior intraoperative replacement strategy and quantitative guidance for post-surgical rehabilitation.

Enhancing DNA-based nanodevices activation through cationic peptide acceleration of strand displacement

Xianxue Zhang,Ruikai Du,Shichao Xu,Xinyue Wang,Zhen-Gang Wang

Dynamic DNA-based nanodevices offer versatile molecular-level operations, but the majority of them suffer from sluggish kinetics, impeding the advancement of device complexity. In this work, we present the self-assembly of a cationic peptide with DNA to expedite toehold-mediated DNA strand displacement (TMSD) reactions, a fundamental mechanism enabling the dynamic control and actuation of DNA nanostructures. The target DNA is modified with a fluorophore and a quencher, so that the TMSD process can be monitored by recording the time-dependent fluorescence changes. The boosting effect of the peptides is found to be dependent on the peptide/DNA N/P ratio, the toehold/invader binding affinity, and the ionic strength with stronger effects observed at lower ionic strengths, suggesting that electrostatic interactions play a key role. Furthermore, we demonstrate that the cationic peptide enhances the responsiveness and robustness of DNA machinery tweezers or logic circuits (AND and OR) involving multiple strand displacement reactions in parallel and cascade, highlighting its broad utility across DNA-based systems of varying complexity. This work offers a versatile approach to enhance the efficiency of toehold-mediated DNA nanodevices, facilitating flexible design and broader applications.

Low temperature thermolysis and hydrolysis of MgH2 generated from a titanium-mediated hydrogenation of Mg2Si

Shusheng Cao,Yinghui Li,Bolun Wang,Wentao Rao,Yanyue Wang,Hao Du,Dong Wang,Jiaqi Zhang,Xi Lin,Jianxin Zou

The magnesium-silicon hydrogen storage system (Mg 2 Si+H 2 ↔MgH 2 +Si) has attracted considerable attention with the potential of achieving near-room temperature hydrogen sorption since the reaction enthalpy is only ∼36.8 kJ/mol H 2 , offering much better thermodynamic properties over MgH 2 . However, the rehydrogenation of Mg 2 Si faces significant kinetic barriers, restricting its practical utilization. In this work, hydrogen-assisted high-energy ball milling (HHBM) was employed to hydrogenate Mg 2 Si. XRD and HRTEM results confirmed that Mg 2 Si was successfully converted into MgH 2 under the influence of titanium (Ti), achieving a conversion rate up to 76%. Aberration-corrected TEM (AC-TEM) revealed that in situ formed MgH 2 and titanium silicide (TiSi 2 ) were homogenously mixed with robust interfaces. Such a growth mode reduces the migration path of Si atoms and the stability of Mg 2 Si, thus promoting the formation of MgH 2 . Furthermore, the as-synthesized MgH 2 particles with ultrafine particle size and adjacent catalysts show superior thermolysis and hydrolysis performances. Consequently, the composite exhibits excellent hydrogen storage properties, absorbing 50% of its total hydrogen capacity at room temperature and initiating dehydrogenation at 114.3 °C. In situ synchrotron X-ray diffraction (ISXRD) confirms the dehydrogenation of in situ generated ultrafine MgH 2 and part of TiSi 2 is converted to Mg 2 Si at 283 °C. In addition, the ultrafine, defect-rich MgH 2 particles show favorable hydrolysis kinetics and high conversion efficiency at relatively low temperatures (91.9% of the hydrogen yield can be achieved at 5 °C). This method developed in this work exhibits a new way to synthesize high-performance hydrogen storage materials.

Interface-engineered Polybenzoxazine/Aramid Ⅲ nanofiber composite aerogels with ultralow thermal conductivity, exceptional mechanical robustness, and intrinsic flame retardancy

Jiandong Yin,Bin Wang,Yunmei Xie,Guiyan Yang,Dong Xiang,Yuanpeng Wu,Tao Peng,Jie Zhang,Tianhang Huang,Chunxia Zhao,Hui Li,Jinbo Cheng,Xinnian Fan

High-performance aerogels, characterized by ultra-low density and very low thermal conductivity, show great potential for applications in aerospace, energy management, and fire safety. However, conventional inorganic aerogels often exhibit high brittleness and poor toughness. Single-component aramid Ⅲ nanofiber (AⅢNF) aerogels tend to collapse structurally when exposed to high temperatures or flames, which severely restricts their long-term performance. To overcome this challenge, we propose an interface-engineered in-situ polymerization coating strategy. A robust composite aerogel framework is fabricated by in-situ polymerizing polybenzoxazine (PBa) onto the surface of AⅢNFs. The preparation of this aerogel involves four main steps: (i) deprotonation and reprotonation of AⅢNFs, (ii) acid-catalyzed polymerization of benzoxazine monomers, (Ⅲ) ice-template-assisted freeze-drying, and (iv) hydrophobic modification through chemical vapor deposition. The resulting PBa/AⅢNF composite aerogel demonstrates very low thermal conductivity (0.027–0.032 W m −1 K −1 ), high compressive strength (up to 18.92 MPa), a robust compressive modulus (11.59 MPa), and intrinsic flame retardancy with a limiting oxygen index of 41.7%. Mechanistic analysis reveals that the PBa coating strengthens interfacial bonding via hydrogen bonding and π-π interactions, while generating a dense carbon layer during combustion that effectively impedes heat and oxygen transfer. In addition, the aerogel displays superhydrophobicity (contact angle > 150°) and long-term thermal aging stability at elevated temperatures. This study proposes a universal strategy that integrates high-char-forming polymers with nanofiber frameworks, enabling synergistic optimization of aerogel lightweight design, mechanical reinforcement, and multifunctional protection.

Interfacial architecting of organic–inorganic hybrid toward mechanically reinforced, fire-resistant and smoke-suppressed polyurethane composites

Pingfan Xu,Yaofa Luo,Peikun Zhang

Polyurethane (PU) composites integrated with outstanding fire retardancy, smoke suppression as well as ameliorated mechanical property is attractive, but remains a challenge. Here, we demonstrate the interfacial architecting of organic–inorganic hybrid (ACAPP) by reacting renewable chitooligosaccharide (COS) with ammonium polyphosphate (APP) and ammonium octamolybdate (AOM) via a one-pot, facile and eco-friendly approach. The ACAPP with multiple hydroxyl groups shows good compatibility and strong interfacial adhesion force with PU matrix due to the abundant covalent cross-linking points and hydrogen bonds networks. The incorporation of 15 wt% ACAPP enables the resultant PU composite to achieve a V-0 rating, a limiting oxygen index of 26.1%, 31.1% and 44.8% reduction in total heat release and total smoke production, respectively, far outdistancing conventional APP. The suppressed fire hazards mainly benefits from the synergy catalytic carbonization effect of ACAPP in condensed phase. Moreover, ACAPP reinforces the tensile strength of PU whilst retaining the decent ultimate elongation. This work may offer a referable exemplification for constructing green flame-retardant to balance high fire safety and mechanical properties.

Mechanical Reinforcement in Thermoplastic Polyurethane Nanocomposite Incorporated with Polydopamine Functionalized Graphene Nanoplatelet

Keping Chen,Qiang Tian,Chunrong Tian,Guanyun Yan,Fen Cao,Shuen Liang,Xiaolin Wang

Thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) nanocomposites incorporated with polydopamine functionalized graphene nanoplatelet (PDA-GNP) were prepared by in situ polymerization. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy results indicated that the addition of PDA-GNP could promote the formation of hydrogen bonding and microphase separation. The microstructure obtained from small-angle neutron scattering indicated that the addition of PDA-GNP increased the number while significantly it decreased the size of hard microdomains. Scanning electron microscopy demonstrated that PDA-GNP exhibited strong interfacial interactions with TPU matrix. In particular, the tensile strength, strain at break, and toughness of TPU/PDA-GNP with as low as 0.5 wt % PDA-GNP increased by 313, 16, and 279%, respectively. This individualized phenomenon was attributed to the abundant covalent bonding between PDA-GNP and TPU resulting in strong interfacial interactions and good compatibility specifically associated with the changes of TPU microstructure.

Strong luminescent property and high mechanical enhancement on polyethylene terephthalate through doping Tb3+-induced nanoaggreates of poly(styrene-b-acrylic acid)

Yulin Niu,Zhongjie Cheng,Yanliang Yue,Shichao Wang,Wenfei Shen,Yao Wang,Jun Li,Matt J. Kipper,Soo Wohn Lee,Laurence A. Belfiore,Jianguo Tang

In this study, an innovated Tb 3+ -induced polystyrene-co-acrylic acid aggregates (TIPAs) were synthesized to impart strong luminescent property and high mechanical enhancement on polyethylene terephthalate. The structure and photophysical properties of TIPAs were investigated, and their incorporation into poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET) was explored to fabricate a novel hybrid luminescent PET-based hybrid material via melt blending. By adjusting the doping concentration of TIPAs (ranging from 0.3 wt% to 2 wt%), a comprehensive study was conducted on the crystallization behavior, mechanical properties, and fluorescence performance of the composite. The physicochemical properties of the materials were characterized using differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), X-ray diffraction (XRD), tensile testing, and fluorescence spectroscopy. The relative crystallinity of the composite TIPAs@PET increased by 38.2 %, and both the tensile strength and modulus improved by 41.4 % and 34.4 %, respectively, when the TIPA doping concentration was 1.2 wt%. Moreover, the fluorescence intensity of the hybrid luminescent PET material reached its maximum at a doping level of 1.2 wt%, while maintaining excellent transparency. The introduction of TIPAs not only endowed the PET polyester with enhanced fluorescence and mechanical properties but also acted as an efficient nucleating agent, promoting the crystallization of PET.

Mechanical reinforcement of cement-based materials using slow-release polythiotactic acid-grafted Nano-SiO2 hybrid

Wenxiu Qiao,Huina Li,Shuzhen Zheng,Hong Zhou,Yinwen Li,Shoufang Xu,Dengxue Ma,Jianfeng Ma

Inorganic nanomaterials are widely used in improving the mechanical strength of cement-based materials. However, when used in cement-based materials, inorganic nanomaterials are not only easy to agglomerate, but also often leads to the problem of significant decrease in flexural strength. In this paper, a novel organic-inorganic hybrid strategy is adopted by grafting α-lipoic acid, polyether amine, and nano-SiO 2 to synthesize a new type of polymeric nanohybrid material PTNS. The new PNTS exhibits multiple structural characteristics, including dynamic chemical S-S bonds, polycarboxylate frameworks, and steric hindrance effects derived from polyether amines. By adding PTNS to the cement paste, the agglomeration of nano-SiO 2 in cement-based materials can be effectively avoided. The mechanical strength test results show that polymeric nanohybrid material PTNS with dynamic chemical bond can achieve the synergistic improvement of the compressive strength and flexural strength of cement paste. The flexural strength of cement paste mixed with 2.0 wt‰ PTNS-2 increased by 5.3 %, 13.0 % and 9.3 % compared with the control sample after curing for 1, 7 and 28 days, respectively; The compressive strength increased by 18.6 %, 1.5 % and 6.2 % respectively. Furthermore, X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy and cement hydration tests, which revealed the mechanism of mechanical properties enhancement of the slow-release polythioctic acid grafted nano-SiO 2 hybrid material PNTS.

Organophosphate-Intercalated High-Entropy LDHs for High-Performance Fire-Safe Thermoplastic Polyurethane Composites

Chuanshen Wang,Hongliang Ding,Lu Liu,Hongfei He,Bicheng Lin,Na Sun,Keqing Zhou,Wei Wang,Yuan Hu,Bin Yu

Polymer materials pose significant fire hazards, including rapid heat release and the emission of toxic smoke. Herein, we report a flame-retardant thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) composite engineered with organophosphonic acid-intercalated high-entropy layered double hydroxides (HE-LDHs), achieving synergistic flame retardancy, smoke suppression, and mechanical enhancement. Meanwhile, tensile strength was enhanced to 38 MPa. The NiCoFeAlZn/DPA/TPU system demonstrated 42.1% reduction in peak heat release rate (pHRR), 48.5% decrease in total smoke release (TSR), and 36.4% decrease in CO production rate compared to pure TPU, attributed to a hierarchical flame-retardant mechanism involving gas-phase dilution, physical barrier formation, and catalytic charring. The synergistic effect of multi-metal components of HE-LDHs and the intercalation (diphenylphosphoric acid, phenylphosphinic acid) agents restructured the thermal decomposition pathway of the material. Early-stage fire warning through HE-LDHs decomposition of interlayer water and organic acid anions releases CO 2 /H 2 O to dilute flammable gases; Intermediate flame inhibition through HE-LDHs catalyze dehydrogenation crosslinking of TPU, capture by PO· radicals from phosphonates, effectively suppressing flame propagation; High-temperature protection through collapse of LDH layers generates metal oxides and phosphorus-carbon hybrid barriers, triggering endothermic phase transitions, with an increase in the amount of residual carbon. This work establishes a theoretical framework for regulating the structure-property relationship of HE-LDHs and pioneers an integrated, active-passive design for fire-safe, high-risk polymer applications.

Hierarchical coating architecture for cement composites: Coupling mechanical reinforcement with corrosion mitigation in marine environments

Bing Yin,Tongran Li,Zekun Wang,Xueling Yin,Biqin Dong,Dongshuai Hou

The increasingly complex service environment demands higher durability and functionality for concrete coatings; however, balancing mechanical strength and corrosion resistance remains challenging. This study presents a bottom-up approach to fabricating a coating with a dual protective structure on concrete surfaces. Inspired by nacre's layered architecture, biomimetic mineralization is employed to in situ construct a robust, dense, and multilayered ordered calcium carbonate framework. This framework serves as a solid substrate for developing a stable superhydrophobic outer surface with lotus-leaf-like papillary structures. The internal structure emulates the “brick-mud” layered composite of natural pearls, using alternating hard mineral and tough organic phases for stress dispersion and energy dissipation. The external structure integrates micro-nano rough features with low-surface-energy materials to create superhydrophobicity, effectively reducing adhesion and penetration of corrosive liquids. The coating exhibits robust mechanical properties (Hardness: 1.49 ± 0.02 GPa, Young's modulus: 42.17 ± 0.48 GPa) and superhydrophobicity (CA: 152°, SA: 6°). It significantly reduces capillary water absorption by 92.76 % and shows excellent performance in wear resistance, UV aging, and corrosion protection. This biomimetic composite coating provides dual protection via internal structural reinforcement and external hydrophobic barriers, enabling it to protect concrete structures in harsh service environments, such as marine infrastructure, industrial facilities, and coastal structures, while endowing them with excellent mechanical properties and corrosion resistance simultaneously. This study provides a promising approach for fabricating multifunctional coatings with desired properties and structures, and offers an effective strategy for protecting concrete infrastructure in marine environments.

An organic-inorganic hybrid halogen-free barrier layer for thermal insulating, mechanical-reinforced, and flame-retardant expanded polystyrene foam

Yang Liu,Jiyuan Han,Ke Shang,Guide Lin,Bi Zhao,Junsheng Wang

Endowing expanded polystyrene (EPS) foams with balanced thermal insulation, mechanical strength, and fire safety via a green and efficient way is highly desirable for the development of building energy-saving materials. Herein, a novel organic-inorganic hybrid halogen-free flame-retardant system was established on the basis of the P-containing polysiloxane (PDV), geopolymer cementitious materials (GP), and expandable graphite (EG), in which the obtained organic-inorganic PDV-GP component was designed as a flame-retardant binding agent to firmly anchor EG (synergist filler) on the outer layer of pre-expanded EPS beads. Then, the flame-retardant EPS composite foams featuring thermal-insulating capability can be obtained through a hot-pressing process. Benefiting from the existence of the organic-inorganic hybrid barrier layer, the compressive strength and heat resistance of the resultant EPS composite foams can be effectively enhanced. Importantly, the PDV-GP component exhibited good synergistic flame-retardant effect with EG under low loading, which will accelerate the creation of P- and Si-enriched hybrid carbonaceous layer that is beneficial for blocking air, heat, and smoke species. As expected, the target EPS composite foam exhibited remarkable thermal insulation (0.041 W/(m·K)), outstanding compressive strength of 128.5 kPa (10 % strain), and ideal flame retardancy (LOI value of 32.4 %, V-0 rating), whilst the peak heat release rate and smoke production values were declined by 84.3 % and 60.7 %, respectively. This study proposes a promising strategy for the design of eco-friendly EPS foams with high fire safety and desired overall performance, possessing great potential in building energy-saving field.
