Hydrogel-based electronics have gained comprehensive research interest in the field of wearable sensory device engineering owing to their electrical and mechanical properties, biomimetic features and biocompatibility. However, unlike traditional electronics with well-established manufacturing technologies, hydrogel electronic still need to develop durable force sensing, high transparency, favorable biosafety and low-cost preparation process. Herein, an ionic hydrogel electronics was reported by introducing interpenetrative polymers into natural polysaccharide matrix network via a photocurable additive manufacturing method. The obtained ionogel displays excellent mechanical properties including high mechanical strength of 160 kPa at a tensile strain of 640 %, and durablility over 1000 compression cycles without plastic deformation, while maintaining biocompatibility and transparency (91.6 %, 1 mm). By virtue of its excellent sensing abilities as well as remarkable reproducibility, the assembled ionogel-based wearable sensor are capable to precisely monitor subtle motions in facial expression and large joint bending. Crucially, the incorporation of polymers into bio-based supporting matrix yield promising 3D printed materials with integrated strain sensors, providing significant flexibility for the design and preparation of the next-generation flexible devices.

Underwater adhesion plays an essential role in soft electronics for the underwater interface. Although hydrogel-based electronics are of great interest, because of their versatility, water molecules prevent hydrogels from adhering to substrates, thus bottlenecking further applications. Herein, inspired by the barnacle proteins, MXene/PHMP hydrogels with strong repeatable underwater adhesion are developed through the random copolymerization of 2-phenoxyethyl acrylate, 2-methoxyethyl acrylate, and N-(2-hydroxyethyl) acrylamide with the presence of MXene nanosheets. The hydrogels are mechanically tough (elastic modulus of 32 kPa, fracture stress of 0.11 MPa), and 2-phenoxyethyl acrylate (PEA) with aromatic groups endows the hydrogel with nonswelling property and prevents water molecules from invading the adhesive interface, rendering the hydrogels an outstanding adhesive behavior toward various substrates (including glass, iron, polyethylene terephthalate (PET), porcine). Besides, dynamic physical interactions allow for instant and repeatable underwater adhesion. Furthermore, the MXene/PHMP hydrogels exhibit a high conductivity (0.016 S/m), fast responsiveness, and superior sensitivity as a strain sensor (gauge factor = 7.17 at 200%–500% strain) and pressure sensor (0.63 kPa–1 at 0–70 kPa). The underwater applications of bionic hydrogel-based sensors have been demonstrated, such as human motion, pressure sensing, and holding objects. It is anticipated that the instant and repeatable underwater adhesive hydrogel-based sensors extend the underwater applications of hydrogel electronics.

A platform is introduced for pressure-mediated chemiresistive glucose sensing based on a 2D array of glucose-conjugating silver nanowire (AgNW)-deposited conductive microparticles (AgCMPs). Glucose-conjugating AgCMPs, as transducers of the sensors, are fabricated by decorating the surface of monodisperse polyurethane elastomeric MPs with AgNWs by layer-by-layer deposition. Then, the AgNWs are covalently bonded to 4-mercaptophenylboronic acid (4-MPBA) to endow them with chemiresistive glucose sensing property against the applied pressure. The 4-MPBA-functionalized AgCMPs are positioned with high accuracy on a hole-patterned stencil film placed between electrodes. Using this sensor system, it is shown that the current induced by the application of constant pressure to the sensor film at a given supply voltage varies linearly with the glucose concentration before and after critical glucose bridging concentration. Notably, the AgCMP-based chemiresistive sensors could detect glucose over a wide concentration range from 0.56 × 10 −6 m to 56 × 10 −3 m with remarkable sensitivity and selectivity.

The demand for lightweight and high-performance multifunctional composite materials is becoming increasingly widespread nowadays. This study investigates the impact-resistance and force-sensing capabilities of polyborosiloxane (PBS) integrated within carbon fiber. Two types of PBS are synthesized with different crosslinking densities, focusing on their rheological and mechanical properties under various strain rates and impact conditions. The results show that peak force is highly correlated with impact energy, rather than velocity, when PBS is in its rubbery state. Interestingly, with the dynamic compression of a high strain rate, PBS produces a yielding stage and then a strengthening stage. Compared to traditional epoxy/carbon laminates, PBS65/Carbon composites exhibited superior impact energy absorption, withstanding up to seven repeated impacts due to the brittle cracking of PBS and its stiffening transition and the self-healing function. Moreover, the addition of carbon nanotubes to the PBS matrix enabled the development of a force-sensing composite, which can detect and measure impact forces. The PBS/Carbon laminates also exhibited enhanced flexibility, making them suitable for advanced protective applications requiring repeated impact-resistance and real-time force monitoring.

Abstract Novel, flexible, smart cellulose nanocomposite plates were fabricated by coating graphene nanoplate (GnPs) solution on the surface of cellulose sol, followed by hot pressing, in which GnPs was directly exfoliated and dispersed by PVP as exfoliating and dispersing agent. The structure, properties, and dual sensing (strain and pressure) of the resultant cellulose/GnPs nanocomposite plates (CGP) were systematically investigated. The formed conductive graphene network within the cellulose substrate, and the strong interfacial adhesion between cellulose and GnPs endowed the CGP excellent electromechanical properties, i.e. low electrical resistance (< 270 Ω cm), stable sensitivity on strain (GF 5.87) and pressure (S 0.037 kPa −1 ), good durability (> 1000 loading/unloading cycles). This work provided a green and facile approach to fabricate smart cellulose sensor responding to different external stimuli like stretch and compress by electrical resistance changes. Simultaneous monitoring of the body’s biochemical and biophysical signals via wearable devices can provide a comprehensive assessment of an individual’s health state. However, current multifunctional sensors for synchronous biochemical and biophysical sensing rely on discrete sensing units, posing a limitation in increased complexity in device assembly, signal processing, and system integration. In this study, we report a dual-mode and self-powered wearable sensor with ion and pressure-sensing capabilities by interfacing a hydrogel film with a solid ion-selective electrode. The hydrogel film can not only collect natural sweat from the skin but also offer a piezoionic response to pressure. We show that wrist pulse-induced pressure response can be incorporated into the noise of the response to sweat sodium ions, allowing for the simultaneous measurement of heart rate and sweat electrolytes. This work provides an example of simplifying the development of wearable multimode sensors through the rational design of classic electrochemical sensors.

Flexible sensors with a single tactile sensing function have been extensively studied, however, the development of highly sensitive multifunctional sensors remains a significant challenge in the realm of wearable technology. In this paper, a multifunctional flexible capacitive sensor with integrated proximity, pressure and temperature perception is developed. The dielectric layer of the sensor is obtained by spontaneous polymerization of polyvinyl alcohol and the ionic liquid 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide at room temperature. The electrode structure is optimized by leveraging the capacitive fringing field effect, and the designed hole-circle shaped 4 × 4 electrode array achieves optimal proximity sensitivity with a maximal capacitance drop of 0.54 pF to human hand and a detection distance of 30 mm. Besides, the prepared microcone structure sensor exhibits high pressure sensitivity of 4.822 kPa-1(0-5 kPa), rapid response time (<100 ms), a broad detection range (~200 kPa), and excellent stability over 3000 cycles of loading/unloading tests. By exploiting the temperature dependence of the ionic liquid, the sensor also exhibits high temperature sensitivity of 80.6%°C-1(25-80°C). Finally, we verified the successful application of this sensor in dynamic finger trajectory recognition, multi-touch and robotic grasping state detection, paving the way for its use in artificial intelligence, healthcare, and intelligent robotics.

Mussel-inspired conductive hydrogels are attractive for the development of next-generation self-adhesive, flexible skinlike sensors. However, despite extensive progress, there are still some daunting challenges that hinder their applications, such as inferior optical transparency, low catechol content (e.g., poor adhesion), as well as limited sensation performances. Here, we report a dopamine-triggered gelation (DTG) strategy for fabricating mussel-inspired, transparent, and conductive hydrogels. The DTG design leverages on the dual functions of dopamine, which serves as both polymerization initiator and dynamic mediator to elaborate and orchestrate the cross-linking networks of hydrogels, allowing for pronounced adhesion, robust elasticity, self-healing ability, excellent injectability and three-dimensional printability, reversible and tunable transparent-opaque transition, and thermoresponsive feature. These preferable performances enable DTG hydrogels as self-adhesive, flexible skinlike sensors for achieving multiple sensations toward pressure, strain, and temperature, even an extraordinary visual perception effect, making it a step closer in the exploration of future biomimetic skin.

Stretchable ionic hydrogels with superior all-round properties that can detect multimodal sensations with excellent discriminability and robustness against external disturbances are highly required for artificial electronic skinapplications. However, some critical material parameters exhibit intrinsic tradeoffs with each other for most ionic hydrogels. Here, a microphase-separated hydrogel is demonstrated by combining three strategies: (1) using of a low crosslinker/monomer ratio to obtain highly entangled polymer chains as the first network; (2) the introduction of zwitterions into the first network; (3) the synthesis of an ultrasoft polyelectrolyte as the second network. This all-round elastic ionic hydrogel exhibits a low Young's modulus (< 60 kPa), large stretchability (> 900%), high resilience (> 95%), unique strain-stiffening behavior, excellent fatigue tolerance, high ionic conductivity (> 2.0 S m⁻ 1 ), and anti-freezing capability, which have not been achieved before. These properties allow the ionic hydrogel to operate as a stretchable multimodal sensor that can detect and decouple multiple stimuli (temperature, pressure, and proximity) with excellent discriminability, high sensitivity, and strong sensing-robustness against strains or temperature perturbations. The ionic hydrogel sensor exhibits great potential for intelligent electronic skin applications such as reliable health monitoring and accurate object identification.

Wearable medical devices are gaining significant attention for their potential in intelligent health monitoring, particularly in response to the needs of an aging global population. However, conventional systems often suffer from limitations in power supply, mechanical adaptability, and real-time diagnostic capabilities. In this work, a flexible, self-powered intelligent sensing system is reported, based on a carbon cloth substrate modified with a pomegranate-inspired Polyaniline-Prussian blue (CC@PANI-PB) composite. This multifunctional composite simultaneously serves as a high-performance cathode material for lithium-oxygen (Li-O₂) batteries and as an active sensing layer for pressure and ECG signal acquisition. The unique microstructured morphology and optimized interfacial interactions enable both high energy output and ultrasensitive tactile sensing. The resulting sensor exhibits a wide detection range (30–100 000 Pa), exceptional mechanical durability (over 9000 cycles), and ultrahigh sensitivity (S max = 4.16 × 10⁷ kPa⁻¹). Integrated with a Li-O₂ energy unit and signal processing module, the system enables continuous pulse signal acquisition and ECG classification, achieving a disease prediction accuracy of 95.90% and ECG classification accuracy of 93.75%. This integrated platform demonstrates strong potential for next-generation wearable healthcare systems, combining real-time sensing, energy autonomy, and intelligent diagnosis within a unified framework.

Traditional electronic skin (e-skin) with single micro-nano structures has a limited capacity to optimize the comprehensive sensing properties, which greatly hinders the intellectualization process. Herein, cocklebur-inspired bionic e-skin consisting of the “branch-seed-spininess” three-dimensional hierarchical structure, namely the P(VDF-TrFE) fiber-TiO 2 pillar-TiO 2 thorn structure (FPTS), is proposed. Benefiting from the hierarchical characteristics of the FPTS, the e-skin exhibits a high sensitivity of 0.163 kPa −1 (<20 kPa), wide pressure sensing range of 0–200 kPa, and ultrafast response/relaxation time of < 5.6 ms. In light of these salient features , versatile intelligent perception applications are explored. First, robot fingers are equipped with the FPTS e-skins and realize the traditional Chinese medicine pulse diagnosis of the radial artery in different positions and pressing degrees. Second, a flexible perception array with 100 FPTS e-skin units enables the spatial pressure mapping of flat/curved surfaces and the perception of different Braille characters. Most importantly, by making full use of the FPTS e-skin with a five-layer deep neural network , an intelligent gesture perception system is developed for accurate recognition (average accuracy: 98.33%) of sign language and precise control of the robot hand, which is of great significance for the development of intelligent sign language translation in artificial intelligence.
