The effective treatment of hospital sewage is crucial to human health and eco-environment, especially during the pandemic of COVID-19. In this study, a demonstration project of actual hospital sewage using electron beam technology was established as advanced treatment process during the outbreak of COVID-19 pandemic in Hubei, China in July 2020. The results indicated that electron beam radiation could effectively remove COD, pathogenic bacteria and viruses in hospital sewage. The continuous monitoring date showed that the effluent COD concentration after electron beam treatment was stably below 30 mg/L, and the concentration of fecal Escherichia coli was below 50 MPN/L, when the absorbed dose was 4 kGy. Electron beam radiation was also an effective method for inactivating viruses. Compared to the inactivation of fecal Escherichia coli , higher absorbed dose was required for the inactivation of virus. Absorbed dose had different effect on the removal of virus. When the absorbed dose ranged from 30 to 50 kGy, Hepatitis A virus (HAV) and Astrovirus (ASV) could be completely removed by electron beam treatment. For Rotavirus (RV) and Enterovirus (EV) virus, the removal efficiency firstly increased and then decreased. The maximum removal efficiency of RV and EV was 98.90% and 88.49%, respectively. For the Norovirus (NVLII) virus, the maximum removal efficiency was 81.58%. This study firstly reported the performance of electron beam in the removal of COD, fecal Escherichia coli and virus in the actual hospital sewage, which would provide useful information for the application of electron beam technology in the treatment of hospital sewage.

Progesterones are ubiquitous in hospital wastewater (HWW) with concentrations much higher than those of estrogens and androgens. To ensure that these water systems are safe to use, disinfection is crucial during HWW treatment by providing “front line” defense against biological contaminations. Here, five disinfection processes, namely, chlorine (Cl 2 ), chlorine dioxide (ClO 2 ), ozone (O 3 ), ultraviolet (UV)), and UV/chlorine (UV/Cl 2 ), were selected to investigate their removal efficiencies for progesterones in primary filtration and secondary biological treatment effluents. There were 61 natural and synthetic progesterones detected in HWW, with the natural progesterones being the main components with a concentration of 845.51 ng/L and contributing to 75.08% of the total progesterones. The primary filtration treatment presented insignificant removal effects on the progesterones, while the secondary biological treatment significantly reduced the progesterone content by biodegradation. The order of removal efficiencies of total progesterones by different disinfection processes was UV/Cl 2 > Cl 2 > O 3 > ClO 2 > UV. UV/Cl 2 showed the highest removal efficiency against progesterones mainly due to the activation of Cl 2 by ultraviolet (UV) photolysis, which helps open the heterocyclic, aromatic, and phenolic rings, thus accelerating progesterone degradation. In addition, the removal efficiencies of natural progesterones in the five disinfection processes were higher than those of synthetic progesterones (progesterone derivatives, 19-nortestosterone derivatives, and 17α-hydroxyprogesterone derivatives).

The electro-peroxone (EP) process encounters two inherent challenges in wastewater treatment: sluggish O 2 /O 3 transfer and substantial ozone waste. To overcome these limitations, we introduced micro-nano bubbles (MNBs) aeration to enhance O 2 /O 3 dissolution and diffusion, ultimately aiming to improve the removal of trace pharmaceutical contaminants from hospital wastewater. In the MNBs aeration system, the ozone transfer coefficient ranging from 0.536 to 0.265 min −1 , significantly surpassing that of conventional aeration (0.220 to 0.090 min −1 ) by approximately 2 to 4.5 times. Consequently, the EP process under MNBs aeration significantly enhanced ozone-resistant ibuprofen (IBU) removal, achieving a removal rate of 98.4 ± 1.5 %, far exceeding the 47.3 ± 4.7 % observed with conventional aeration. This significant improvement was attributed to the heightened production of hydroxyl radicals (•OH), reaching 0.97 × 10 −9 M s, compared to only 0.28 × 10 −9 M s in conventional aeration. The mechanism behind the enhanced •OH production in the MNBs-EP process relied primarily on two factors: improved O 2 /O 3 dissolution due to high internal pressure/large surface and enhanced O 3 /H 2 O 2 activation from high collapse energy. These factors together contributed to the robust oxidation capability of the MNBs-EP system. As a result, over 97 % removal efficiency was achieved for five representative pharmaceutical pollutants (sulfamethoxazole, ribavirin, norfloxacin, tetracycline and ampicillin) in just 1 min. Furthermore, when applied to real hospital wastewater, the MNBs-O 3 -E treatment system reduced all 15 detected trace pharmaceutical compounds to below 10 ng L −1 and achieved 14 types of pollutants with removal rates of over 85 % within 15 min, resulting in an ultrahigh total removal rate of 98.6 %, from an initial total concentration of 2108 ng L −1 to less than 30 ng L −1 . Thus, micro-nano aeration endowed the EP process as a promising advanced oxidation system for rapid and highly-effective removal of trace pharmaceutical contaminants from hospital wastewater.

Traditional Fe(VI) treatment process does not fully utilize the fresh iron flocs. This study proposed a novel Fe(VI) flocs recycling process. The flocs were recycled into the front-end reactor and the flocculation effluent further reacted with Fe(VI). Compared with Fe(VI) alone, the COD Cr of the secondary effluent of hospital wastewater decreased from 74.9 to 59.4 mg/L and TP decreased from 0.36 to 0.10 mg/L at the dosage of 20 mg/L Fe(VI). However, the enhanced removal of NH 3 -N and TOC by the flocs recycling process is limited. The Fe(VI) flocs recycling process also strengthened the removal of luminescent bacterial acute toxicity, from 0.52 ± 0.01 in secondary effluent to 0.17 ± 0.01 mg-ZnSO 4 /L. Compared with polymeric ferric chloride and ferric chloride (FeCl 3 ), Fe(VI) showed the best performance on purifying wastewater in the flocs recycling process. Compared with FeCl 3 , the C O bond contents in flocs from Fe(VI) changed more obviously. Flocs from Fe(VI) have a smaller average particle size than those from FeCl 3 , which may result in better adsorption capacity of Fe(VI) flocs. In conclusion, the flocs recycling process not only taken full use of the Fe(III) flocs and reduced the iron sludge, but also strengthened the purification of the wastewater without additional Fe(VI) dosing.

Pharmaceuticals in hospital effluents, often discharged into the public sewage network without sufficient treatment, have shown negative impacts to the human health and aquatic environment. However, the conventional adsorbents used to remove these micropollutants had several deficiencies, including slow uptake kinetics and poor selectivity . To overcome these challenges, water-compatible Janus MIP particles (J-MIPs) with mouth-like openings were synthesized using seeded interfacial polymerization in this work. Among the series of J-MIPs, the selected J-MIP 3 showed fast binding kinetics (∼40 s) towards the target pollutant. The theoretical and instrumental analysis suggested that the electrostatic interaction, hydrogen bond and hydrophobic reaction constituted the dominant mechanism for J-MIP 3 's recognition of target pharmaceutical. Selectivity and robustness tests indicated that the synthetic method was promising in practical application. Finally, the feasibility of the J-MIP 3 fixed-bed column in the rapid removal of propranolol (PRO) from hospital effluents was successfully demonstrated. Compared to the activated carbon fixed-bed column, the J-MIP 3 fixed-bed column showed at least 7-fold enhancement in its treatment efficiency. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first time that the accelerated mass transfer and fast removal of the pharmaceutical from wastewater have been achieved by the synthetic receptor with asymmetric structure. We believe the present study will open new avenues for the development of multi-functional molecularly imprinted polymers as well as Janus materials in environmental science.

Herein, this work investigated an electrocatalytic ozonation (ECO) strategy using stainless steel-graphite plates as cathode–anode for the degradation of the pharmaceutical pollutant dexamethasone (DXMS) and the treatment of real hospital wastewater. The reaction kinetic constant of the ECO degradation of DXMS (0.387 min −1 ) was 4 times higher than that of single ozone (0.087 min −1 ). The established efficient ECO system successfully degraded pharmaceutical contaminants and had excellent bactericidal effects against pathogenic microorganisms ( Escherichia coli ). The results of scavenging experiments, chemical probe experiments, and electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) analysis indicated that the newly generated 1 O 2 in the ECO system achieved the synergistic effect of the combined EC-ozonation process. More to the point, the ECO system has a high removal rate of chemical oxygen demand (COD) and total organic carbon (TOC) for real hospital wastewater treatment. After 60 min treatment of the ECO system, the COD removal of hospital wastewater ranged from 70 % to 88.91 %, and the TOC removal ranged from 52.05 % to 71.81 %. The ECO system developed in this work has the capacity for simultaneous degradation of pharmaceutical contaminants and sterilization of pathogenic microorganism for hospital wastewater treatment.

Hospital wastewater poses significant public health risks due to the presence of antibiotic-resistant bacteria and other pathogens. Herein, a positively charged GO/ MoS 2 @PEI (GMP) nanozyme for ecofriendly, low energy consumption and low systemic toxicity were synthesized. The positive surface potential of GMP enhances the adsorption of anionic lipopolysaccharide (LPS) and lipoteichoic acid (LTA) present on bacterial membranes, thereby improving bacterial capture and interaction with the antibacterial agent. Under visible light (VL) illumination from a common fluorescent lamp, the GMP nanozyme shows a synergistic photocatalytic effect, achieving 100 % antibacterial efficiency against both Gram-negative and Gram-positive bacteria. Electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) experiments confirmed the pivotal role of superoxide radicals (•O 2 − ) and hydroxyl radicals (•OH) in the bacterial inactivation process. This work provides innovative synergistic strategy for constructing nanomaterials for highly efficient biofouling control in hospital wastewater.

Glucocorticoids (GCs) have drawn great concern due to their widespread contamination in the environment and application in treating patients with COVID-19. Due to the lack of data about GC removal using advanced treatment processes, a novel Paralleling and bubbling corona discharge reactor (PBCD) combined with iron-loaded activated-carbon fibre (Fe-ACF) was addressed in this study to degrade GCs represented by Hydrocortisone (HC) and Betamethasone (BT). The results showed that the PBCD-based system can degrade GCs effectively and can achieve effective sterilization. The removal rates of GCs were ranked as PBCD/Fe-ACF > PBCD/ACF > PBCD. The concentration of E. coli was reduced from 10 9 to 10 2 CFU/mL after 60 min of PBCD-based system treatment. The abundance of bacteria in actual Hospital wastewater (HWW) was significantly reduced. Plasma changed the physical and chemical properties of ACF and Fe-ACF by etching axial grooves and enhancing stretching vibrations of surface functional groups, thus promoting adsorption and catalytic degradation. For GC degradation, the functional reactive species were identified as •OH, 1 O 2 , and •O 2 radicals. Possible degradation pathways for HC and BT were proposed, which mainly included defluorination, keto acid decarboxylation, demethylation, intramolecular cyclization, cleavage and ester hydrolysis, indicating a reduction in GC toxicity. Since GCs are widely used in patients with COVID-19 and their wastewater needs to be sterilized simultaneously, the intensive and electrically driven PBCD-based system is promising in GC pollution control and sterilization in terminal water treatment facilities.

Levofloxacin (LFX), a widely used antibiotic, exhibits high chemical stability and resistance to conventional wastewater treatment methods, posing serious environmental and health concerns. In this study, a super-capacitor activated carbon (SAC) doped with flower-like CoAl-layered double hydroxide (LDH) was synthesized via a one-step hydrothermal method through a doping strategy. The SAC-LDH composite demonstrated superior performance in activating peroxymonosulfate (PMS, 0.12 mM) achieving 95 % degradation efficiency of LFX (10 mg/L) within 5 min. The high specific surface area and excellent adsorption capacity of SAC facilitated effective accumulation of LFX on the catalyst surface, enhancing reaction kinetics. The rapid conversion of Co 2 + and Co 3+ in the catalyst was suggested to generate highly reactive oxygen species, including SO 4 •- , •OH, O 2 •- , and 1 O 2 . This process was further demonstrated by electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR), in-situ Raman spectroscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), and X-ray photo-electron spectroscopy (XPS). Pilot-scale fixed-bed reactor testing of SAC-LDH for pre-treated hospital wastewater treatment (soluble chemical oxygen demand (SCOD) > 140 mg/L) was conducted. The system exhibited long-term stability, anti-interference ability, and high catalytic efficiency under continuous flow condition (1.0 L/h, 7 days). These findings highlight the developed composite SAC-LDH + PMS system as a highly efficient, stable, and scalable solution for treating antibiotic-contaminated wastewater treatment, offering strong potential for real-world environmental remediation application.

Herein, a highly efficient electro-peroxone (E-peroxone) process with graphite felt as ozone diffusion electrode (ODE) was developed for the synchronous removal of pharmaceutical contaminants and inactivation of pathogenic microorganisms in real hospital wastewater. Under optimal conditions, the total organic carbon (TOC) removal rate of real hospital wastewater could reach 93.9%. Importantly, 126 pharmaceutical compounds (antibiotics, antivirals, analgesics, antiepileptics, hormones, and others) were determined in hospital wastewater by using ultra performance liquid chromatography combined with quadrupole time-of-flight mass spectrometry (UPLC-Q-TOF-MS/MS). 110 pharmaceutical compounds could be efficiently degraded in E-peroxone system. Concurrently, the microbial community analysis through high-throughput sequencing showed that E-peroxone process exhibited an excellent disinfection effect in real hospital wastewater. Escherichia coli as a bacterial indicator could be completely inactivated in E-peroxone process·H 2 O 2 and hydroxyl radical ( OH) were found in E-peroxone system based on the results of chemical probe experiments and electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) analysis. The in-situ generation of H 2 O 2 from cathodic oxygen reduction in ODE can react with ozone to produce OH, and realize high efficiencies for the elimination of pharmaceutical and sterilization. This work established a green and effective way without extra addition of chemical reagents for high-efficiency treatment of real hospital wastewater.
