Unveiling Gating Behavior in Piezoionic Effect: toward Neuromimetic Tactile Sensing

Shuyu Wang,Tianyu Yang,Dingli Zhang,Qilin Hua,Yuliang Zhao

The human perception system's information processing is intricately linked to the nonlinear response and gating effect of neurons. While piezoionics holds potential in emulating the pressure sensing capability of biological skin, the incorporation of information processing functions seems neglected. Here, ionic gating behavior in piezoionic hydrogels is uncovered as a notable extension beyond the previously observed linear responses. The hydrogel can generate remarkably high voltages (700 mV) and currents (7 mA) when indentation forces surpass the threshold. Through a comprehensive analysis involving simulations and experimental investigations, it is proposed that the gating behavior emerges due to significant diffusion differences between cations and anions. To showcase the practical implications of this breakthrough, the piezoionic hydrogels are successfully integrated with prostheses and robot hands, demonstrating that the gating effect enables accurate discrimination between gentle and harsh touch. The advancement in neuromimetic tactile sensing has significant potential for emerging applications such as humanoid robotics and biomedical engineering, offering valuable opportunities for further development of embodied neuromorphic intelligence.

Ultrasound-induced piezoionic hydrogels with antibacterial and antioxidant properties for promoting infected diabetic wound healing

Chunhua Huang,Xingxing Shi,Binying Peng,Jiapeng Song,Hanwen Huang,Bingna Zheng,Youchen Tang,Zhaopeng Cai,Peng Wang

The effective treatment of infected diabetic wounds remains a major challenge due to bacterial infection and severe oxidative stress. Herein, an antibacterial and antioxidant piezoionic hydrogel (ANDT) is synthesized via a one-pot photocuring process of a precursor solution containing acrylic acid, N-isopropyl acrylamide, quaternary ammonium salt (DPAB), and tannic acid (TA). The ANDT hydrogel exhibits reliable adhesion and appropriate mechanical properties, which can provide a favorable physical barrier. Owing to the introduction of antibacterial DPAB and antioxidant TA, the ANDT hydrogel can reduce inflammation and create an optimal microenvironment for cellular growth. Furthermore, due to the piezoionic effects, the ANDT hydrogel under ultrasound stimulation can generate a biomimetic endogenous electric field to modulate cellular behaviors, thereby achieving an active pro-healing effect. The infected diabetic wound model demonstrates that the ANDT hydrogel combined with ultrasound therapy can effectively reduce inflammation, increase collagen deposition, and promote angiogenesis, thus accelerating the healing process of infected diabetic wounds. This work may provide a promising strategy for developing advanced wound dressing to promote infected diabetic wound healing.

Anisotropic cellulose nanofibril piezoionic organohydrogel fabricated by directional freezing for flexible strain sensors

Yong Deng,Jia Liu,Yutong Lei,Guiyun Huang,Zhe Zhang,Jiulong Sha

Flexible self-powered strain sensors based on piezoionic hydrogels demonstrate great promise for wearable devices, e-skins, and health monitoring. However, existing piezoionic hydrogels typically suffer from limited piezoionic output performance, falling short of the demands of high-performance, self-powered wearable sensors. This study addresses this challenge by constructing directional ion transport channels using a cellulose nanofibril (CNF)-assisted directional freezing technique. CNF acts as nanofillers that enhance ion selectivity in the channels while improving the mechanical properties of polyvinyl alcohol (PVA)/CNF organohydrogels, enabling efficient directional ion transport with K 3 [Fe(CN)] 6 as an ion source. The resulting organohydrogel exhibits high extensibility (479.61 %), ultimate stress (3.63 MPa), and transparency (90 %). Under a pressure of 5 N, it generates an output voltage of up to 199.45 mV within 150 ms, demonstrating a strong linear relationship between stress and output voltage in the range of 2–5 N (R 2  = 0.99). After directional freezing, the output voltage and current increased by 2.49 and 1.94 times, respectively. Additionally, the selective enhancement of ion mobility by CNF has improved the piezoionic output, resulting in a 2.02-fold increase in piezoionic voltage. These high–sensitivity piezoionic organohydrogels, with their efficient electromechanical conversion capabilities, indicate a promising future for flexible strain sensors.

Piezoelectric-induced piezo ionic effect enabling high-performance flexible sensors and batteries for intelligent target shooting training

Hui Wang,Bo Zhao,Wanxing Li,Yumeng Liu,Ling Li,Youwei Zhao,Wenming Zhang

Flexible wearable electronic devices function as pivotal interfaces for environmental interaction, yet their widespread application encounters formidable bottlenecks due to limited energy supply and multifunctionality. Herein, the piezo-ionic effect has been innovatively applied to polyacrylamide (PAM)/polyvinylidene fluoride UiO-66 MOF(PPM) composite membranes for multifunctional sensing in stress monitoring and optical response, as well as dendrite-free flexible zinc-ion batteries. Exploiting the piezoelectric-induced piezo-ionic effect, the sensor achieves remarkable performance with ultra-fast response/recovery times (10 ms/18 ms) and an impressive maximum electrical output of 23.64 μA. The high-performance sensing mechanism has been confirmed through finite element simulations. Furthermore, the polarized electric field of the fiber instigates ion deposition, enabling the composite membrane to be utilized in zinc-ion batteries for the first time, effectively inhibiting zinc dendrite formation. Consequently, the flexible battery exhibits a symmetrical cycle of up to 2000 h and maintains a stable high capacity of 150 mAhg −1 . Additionally, the multifunctional sensing system constructed with composite membrane is applied to monitor light responses, facial expressions, and motion, while also providing intelligent guidance for multi-scene-target accuracy exercises with an accuracy exceeding 94 %. The composite membrane stands as a promising material with substantial potential to propel significant advancements in the development of flexible electronic devices.

Cationic chitosan enables eutectogels with high ionic conductivity for multifunctional applications in energy harvesting and storage

Wanwan Liu,Yufan Lan,Honghui Li,Chaofan Liu,Alain Dufresne,Lihua Fu,Baofeng Lin,Chuanhui Xu,Bai Huang

Eutectogels are popular as an emerging material in the field of flexible electronics. However, limited mechanical properties and ionic conductivity restrict their multifunctional application expansion. Herein, cationic chitosan quaternary ammonium salt (CQS) was evenly embedded into the three-dimensional porous framework of eutectogel to build ion migration channels. And a simple solvent replacement process enhanced the crystallization of polyvinyl alcohol matrix and hydrogen bonding, preparing composite eutectogels with high toughness, environmental tolerance and conductivity. The prepared gel exhibites excellent mechanical properties (1.72 MPa, 413 %) and conductivity (0.40 S·m −1 ). Under external force, three-dimensional porous network with cationic polysaccharide distribution can achieve effective piezoionic effect. Moderate CQS significantly enhances the piezoionic voltage output to 270 mV, which is 4.5 times that of the pure eutectogel. Further, the prepared composite eutectogels was used for capacitor energy storage and wearable sensing devices, and has good charge/discharge stability (94 % capacitance retention) and fast response time (292 ms). This design is typically suitable for preparing advanced multifunctional ion conductors using various natural polysaccharides with sustainable application potential.

Multi-Functional and Multi-Stimulus Sensitive Self-Powered Hydrogel for Skin Mimicry and Energy Harvester

Linbin Li,Xuechuan Wang,Wei Wang,Wenlong Zhang,Long Xing,Yitong Wang,Long Xie,Yi Zhou,Pedram Fatehi,Xiangyu You,Hui Jie Zhang

Self-powered hydrogel i-skin (ionic skins) with excellent mechanical properties and multi-stimuli responsiveness resembling natural skin is highly desirable but remains a significant challenge. This study introduced a novel multi-stimuli-sensitive self-powered hydrogel, formed by integrating multiple hydrogen bonds and a polyampholyte network, which exhibited excellent mechanical properties, fatigue resistance, high transparency, strong adhesion, and anti-freezing capability. The cations and anions on the polyampholyte, along with their free counterions, enabled the piezoionic behavior with the output voltage and voltage decay time highly sensitive to the applied pressure and contact shape. Following the release of relatively high pressure, the hydrogel exhibited a prolonged voltage decay time of up to 35 s. The presence of multiple hydrogen bonds and the low water content endowed the hydrogel with sensitivity to both humidity and temperature. These functionalities rendered the hydrogel a promising candidate for skin-mimetic applications and energy harvesting in next-generation flexible sensing devices and human–machine interfaces.

Crosslinking-Modulated Hydrogel Piezoionic Sensor for Pattern Security Authentication in Human-Machine Interfaces

Yue Sun,Guo Tian,Tao Yang,Shenglong Wang,Boling Lan,Xuelan Li,Tianpei Xu,Long Jin,Weili Deng,Weiqing Yang

Ionic hydrogels are uniquely suited as force-sensing layers because of their good biocompatibility and controlled electromechanical properties. The emerging piezoionic effect allows them to sense the position of pressure, but the low response rate limits their applications. Herein, this work focuses on modulating the response time of piezoionic outputs through crosslinking. The underlying mechanism is investigated through the perspective of deformation recovery rate and ion migration behavior in the ionic hydrogels. As a result, the developed piezoionic sensors are capable of distinguishing static forces in the range of 0.1–5 s while monitoring dynamic force, breaking the limitations of conventional self-powered pressure sensors that have trouble tracking static forces. Furthermore, by utilizing the piezoionic effect to convert the touch indentation into transverse gradient ionic potential, the constructed piezoionic sensors achieve accurate monitoring of finger pressing position and sliding trajectory. As a proof-of-concept, pattern unlocking in security authentication is successfully validated based on the developed piezoionic sensors. This design strategy of modulating ionic tactile sensor by crosslinking is expected to provide a fresh path for the large-scale flexible human-machine interfaces.
