Flexible pressure sensors play a vital role in advancing wearable electronics by enabling precise health monitoring, human-machine interfaces, and environmental sensing. MXene-based piezoresistive sensors have garnered significant attention due to their exceptional electromechanical properties. However, enhancing their performance and ensuring environmental sustainability simultaneously still remain critical challenge. In this study, we prepared hydroxyl-rich deacetylated cellulose acetate (DCA) fibers and attached MXene to the surface to form a three-dimensionally interconnected conductive network. Taking advantage of the typical micromorphology and in turn the high electrical conductivity modulation, the resulting MXene/DCA (MDCA) flexible sensors exhibited exceptionally high sensitivity (54.62 kPa–1), excellent linearity in the range of 0–40 kPa (R2 = 0.998), fast response/recovery time (154/125 ms), and outstanding long-term durability over 10 000 compression cycles at 12.37 kPa without significant degradation. This study offers promising insights into the development of high-performance, environmentally friendly piezoresistive sensors.

Porous biodegradable polybutylene adipate terephthalate (PBAT)-based material, used in wearable electronics for sensing human motion, is beneficial for environmental protection. Although PBAT demonstrates good elongation at break and impact performance, specific studies on its processing, modification, and porous structure are needed. Therefore, PBAT/single-walled carbon nanotube (SWCNT) porous material was prepared via a salt-templating method. It was found that part of the SWCNT was embedded in the walls of the pores in the PBAT substrate, while another part was exposed on the pore surface. PBAT served as the structural framework, and SWCNT functioned mainly as the active component, especially the SWCNT exposed on the surface. This unique microstructure imparted the porous material with desirable piezoresistive properties and effective electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding capabilities. When the material was compressed, the exposed SWCNT was forced into closer contact, increasing the number of electrical transport pathways and further enhancing conductivity. The resulting porous sensor exhibited a notable response to strain up to 100% and demonstrated high sensitivity (1.25) while maintaining robust cyclic stability after 1000 cycles. Human pulse and finger flexion were successfully recorded using the fabricated porous sensor. Moreover, the porous material displayed EMI shielding capabilities, primarily through the absorption of electromagnetic (EM) waves, a phenomenon associated with the rough surface of the pores created by the exposed SWCNT. The overall electromagnetic shielding effectiveness was around 60 dB. Given these advantages, the green biodegradable material PBAT shows significant potential for application in piezoresistive sensors and electromagnetic interference shielding with appropriate modification and preparation.

A novel bone-inspired fatigue-resistant hydrogel with excellent mechanical and piezoresistive properties was developed, and it exhibited great potential as a load and strain sensor for underwater robotics and daily monitoring. The hydrogel was created by using the high edge density and aspect ratio of graphene nanosheet-embedded carbon (GNEC) nanomaterials to form a three-dimensional conductive network and prevent the expansion of microcracks in the hydrogel system. Multiscale progressive enhancement of the organic hydrogels (micrometer scale) was realized with inorganic graphene nanosheets (nanometer scale). The graphene nanocrystals inside the GNEC film exhibited good electron transport properties, and the increased distances between the graphene nanocrystals inside the GNEC film caused by external forces increased the resistance, so the hydrogel was highly sensitive and suitable for connection to a loop for sensing applications. The hydrogels obtained in this work exhibited excellent mechanical properties, such as tensile properties (strain up to 1685%) and strengths (stresses up to 171 kPa), that make them suitable for use as elastic retraction devices in robotics and provide high sensitivities (150 ms) for daily human monitoring.

Due to the advantages of high porosity, excellent conductivity, and tunable morphology, carbonized metal-organic framework (C-MOF) is expected to become an ideal material for constructing high-performance flexible pressure sensor. Herein, to achieving the suitable morphology of C-MOF for piezoresistive sensors, a rapid thermal process (RTP) was used for carbonization of NiCo-MOF, and the petal-shaped NiCo alloy nanoparticles/nanoporous carbon composites (NiCo-NPCs) were obtained. Compared with NiCo-NPCs carbonized by common thermal process (CTP), NiCo-NPCs carbonized by RTP exhibit a modified morphology with smaller particle size and larger most frequent pore diameter. Due to the modified morphology, the piezoresistive sensor with RTP-carbonized NiCo-NPCs has a high sensitivity of 62.13 kPa–1 at 0–3 kPa, which is 3.46 times higher than that of the sensor with CTP-carbonized NiCo-NPCs. Meanwhile, the sensor shows an ultra-wide range of 1000 kPa, excellent cycle stability (>4000 cycles), and fast response/recovery time of 25/44 ms. Furthermore, the application of the sensor in dynamic loading test, airflow monitoring, voice recognition, and gesture detection demonstrates its great application prospects. In short, this work investigates the application of carbonized NiCo-MOFs in flexible pressure sensors, and provides a new strategy to improve the performance of piezoresistive sensors with porous carbon derived from MOFs.

Flexible porous conductive composites have been widely applied for wearable sensing devices and there is continuous exploration towards multi-functionalization of porous conductive composites. In this work, through sugar template method and following immersion assisted reduction, polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) sponge embedded with carbonyl iron (CI) was successfully anchored with silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) binded with block copolymer polystyrene- block -poly(ethylene- co -butylene)- block -polystyrene (SEBS). A superhydrophobic multifunctional sponge type conductive composites (SCC) was prepared (CI-PDMS/AgNPs-SEBS Sponge, abbreviated as CP/AgE Sponge). CP/AgE sponge had excellent superhydrophobic properties (water contact angle≈153°), efficient Joule heating (1.6 V, 101 °C within 180 s) and photothermal conversion capabilities (250 mW/cm 2 , 102 °C within 40 s). The CP/AgE sponge pressure sensor had excellent piezoresistive properties, including high sensitivity (3.8 kPa −1 ), wide detection range (160 kPa) and robust stability when subjected to 1000 compression-release cycles, which could be further utilized to accurately and reliably monitor the changing biophysical signals. Besides, CP/AgE sponge had high oil/water separation efficiency as well as magnetically guided waste oil adsorption ability. This work provides a new strategy for preparing a conductive sponge with superhydrophobicity and enriched functionality, which has broad applications in the fields of next generation multifunctional flexible electronics, effective oil/water separation and smart protective skins.

Electronic devices with tactile and pressure-sensing capabilities are becoming increasingly popular in the automatic industry, human motion/health monitoring, and artificial intelligence applications. Inspired by the natural nanotopography of the cicada wing, we propose here a straightforward strategy to fabricate a highly sensitive tactile sensor through nanotexturing of erected polyaniline (PANI) nanoneedles on a conductive and elastic three-dimensional (3D) carbon skeleton. The robust and compressible carbon networks offer a resilient and conducting matrix to catering complex scenarios; the biomimetic PANI nanoneedles firmly and densely anchored on a 3D carbon skeleton provide intimate electrical contact under subtle deformation. As a result, a piezoresistive tactile sensor with ultrahigh sensitivity (33.52 kPa–1), fast response/recovery abilities (97/111 ms), and reproducible sensing performance (2500 cycles) is developed, which is capable of distinguishing motions in a wide pressure range from 4.66 Pa to 60 kPa, detecting spatial pressure distribution, and monitoring various gestures in a wireless manner. These excellent performances demonstrate the great potential of nature-inspired tactile sensors for practical human motion monitoring and artificial intelligence applications.

In this work, flexible and high-performance piezoresistive strain sensors were fabricated by simple layer-by-layer electrostatic self-assembly of carbon nanoparticles on commercial polyurethane (PU) sponges. It was shown that the sponge-based strain sensors exhibited obviously positive and negative piezoresistive characteristics under tensile and compressive strains, respectively. The alternate assembly of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) and graphene nanoplatelets (GNPs) contributed to the construction of a more complete conductive network and significantly improved the sensing performance of the sensor due to the synergistic effect between CNTs and GNPs. Compared with the CNT@PU and CNT/GNP@PU sponge strain sensors, the CNT/GNP/CNT@PU sensor had a larger strain detection range and higher linearity. Besides, the CNT/GNP/CNT@PU sponge strain sensor showed high sensitivity (GF = 43,000 at 60% tensile strain and GF = −1.1 at 50% compressive strain), responsive capability to very small strain (0.05%) and outstanding stability during 3000 loading cycles. Due to its excellent sensing performance, the CNT/GNP/CNT@PU sensor enabled monitoring of various physiological activities, including finger movements, wrist bending and walking etc. In addition, a 5 × 5 sensor array based on the sponge-based strain sensor was prepared to achieve accurate identification of weight distribution. This study provides valuable information for the development of flexible strain sensors with high-performance and low-cost.

Poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene)-coated nonwoven fabric (PEDOT@NWF) composites were prepared using ordinary polyester needle-punched nonwoven fabrics as substrates via in situ vapor phase polymerization (VPP) technique. The prepared PEDOT@NWF conductive composite has a uniform PEDOT coating on the surface of the fibers. Factors which may affect the polymerization effect, such as oxidant concentration, reaction time, and other parameters were explored, and a series of morphological, structural, and electrical properties of the prepared conductive nonwoven fabrics were analyzed. Furthermore, for comparison, piezoresistive pressure sensors with two different assembly methods (vertical electrode and horizontal electrode) were made utilizing the PEDOT@NWF material. The pressure sensing performance has also been evaluated and the as-prepared sensors exhibit good sensitivity and fast response time.

The high conductivity and excellent mechanical properties of polymer composites favor their application as piezoresistive strain sensors. However, developing polymer composites with desirable piezoresistance, mechanical and durable properties is challenging. Herein, we developed conductive cellulose/MWCNTs aerogels using the freeze-drying technique. Furthermore, we explored the application of the highly-sensitive piezoresistive polymer composites following supercritical carbon dioxide (ScCO2) foaming, in cellulose/MWCNTs aerogel-thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) nanocomposites. Conductive polymer composite (CPC) foams exhibited a significantly low percolation threshold (MWCNTs loading of ∼0.07 vol%) and high piezoresistive sensitivity (GF value of 7.84) owing to the low density (∼0.15 g cm−3) of cellulose/MWCNTs, high porosity (90%) and high electric conductivity (2.04 S m−1). The microcellular structure of composite foams was stable with regard to energy loss coefficient and piezoresistance after several compression cycles (1000 cycles). The behavior of the prepared CPC foams under different conditions was evaluated. The findings of the study showed that the piezoresistive sensors can be used in real-time monitoring of human movement.

Wearable piezoresitive sensors have exhibited promising potentials for applications in motion detection and human-computer interactions. Herein, we reported a facile sol-gel followed by hydrothermal reduction approach to prepare polypyrrole/reduced graphite oxide aerogel (PPy@rGA) film, which is more oriented to flexible wearable piezoresistive sensors as compared with traditional cylindrical reduced graphene oxide (rGO) aerogel. The strong π-π interactions between rGO and PPy enhance the interfacial strength and help to maintain the integrity of the composite aerogel film. Meanwhile, the PPy nanoparticles anchoring on the edges and defects of rGO sheets create more electrically conductive paths when an external pressure is applied, and therefore give rise to significant changes in the resistance value and thus excellent piezoresistive sensing performance. The PPy2@rGA film (pyrrole monomer: graphene oxide is 2:1 wt%)–based piezoresistive sensor exhibits a high sensitivity of 0.9 kPa −1 in a linear range that is of 0 to 1 kPa, a short response time of 165 ms, and a short relaxation time of 132 ms, and is able to withstand 10,000 cycles. Moreover, the wearable sensor is capable of detecting large as well as small human motion. This study shows the feasibility of fabricating wearable piezoresitive sensors from rGO aerogel films reinforced by intrinsically conductive polymers. Graphical abstract In this polypyrrole/reduced graphite oxide aerogel film which is more oriented to flexible wearable piezoresistive sensors, PPy nanoparticles anchor adjacent rGO sheets via strong π-π interfacial forces and meanwhile serve as nano-spacers that contribute to an enhanced piezoresistive sensing performance.

Combining graphene composite with three-dimensional structure is an effective strategy to avoid the agglomeration of graphene nanosheets and significantly enhances the properties of composite at low graphene content. In this work, reduced graphene oxide coated polyurethane composite foams (RPFs) with different pore sizes were prepared by a simple and economical self-assembly method. The RPFs are found to have good structural integrity and excellent flexibility, with a remarkable ability to withstand large deformation of 90% and 3 orders of magnitude decrease of electrical resistance. The RPF composite with higher density and smaller pore size exhibits better elasticity and responsive piezoresistivity. The resistance-time curves of RPFs in compression and bending modes exhibits a quick response of loading and release procedures by 0.10 s and 0.74 s in compression, 1.14 s and 0.91 s in bending, respectively, showing a good potential application of flexible and highly sensitive strain sensors for large deformation.

In this work, temperature-responsive poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPAm) was covalently grafted onto the edge of graphene oxide (GO) sheets through a facial method cross-linked by 1-(3-dimethylaminopropyl)-3-ethylcarbodiimide hydrochloride (EDC·HCl) and N-hydroxysuccinimide in aqueous solution at room temperature. Then, the dispersion was wet spun to form a GO composite fiber . Scanning electron microscopy images suggest that severe edge distortions occur in PNIPAm-g-rGO hybrid fibers, indicating the covalent attaching of PNIPAm molecules onto the edge of graphene sheets . The PNIPAm-g-rGO fibers showed more favorable and improved electrical property than the pristine rGO fibers. Moreover, the coil-to-globule transition of the end-grafted PNIPAm chains was partially restricted by graphene sheets in the composite fiber, thereby causing the elevation of the phase transition temperature. Switching test of temperature-responsive versus electrical conductivity function has proved that the observed temperature-induced electrical conversion of the fibers was highly reversible and reproducible. Simultaneously, the composite fiber exhibited higher piezoresistive sensitivity compared with neat fiber. This smart fiber has shown remarkable potential for intelligent strain sensors, textiles, actuators, wires and on/off switches.
