A giant negative piezoresistance effect in 3C-SiC nanowires with B dopants

Xiaoxiao Li,Shanliang Chen,Pengzhan Ying,Fengmei Gao,Qiao Liu,Minghui Shang,Weiyou Yang

Silicon carbide (SiC) is recognized as a promising substitute for the currently used Si for exploring robust pressure sensors with desired high sensitivities and excellent abilities to serve under harsh work conditions. In the present work, we reported the giant piezoresistance effect of p-type 3C-SiC nanowires with B dopants, which were synthesized by catalyst-assisted pyrolysis of polysilazane. The transverse electromechanical properties of SiC nanowires were investigated at loading forces applied using a conductive atomic force microscopy (C-AFM) tip. The resistances of the as-synthesized SiC nanowires exhibit an increase with the increase of compressed stresses at the same bias voltages, representing their negative piezoresistance behaviors. The measured negative piezoresistance coefficient π[10] of the nanowire fell in the range of −8.83 to −103.42 × 10−11 Pa−1 as the applied loading forces ranged from 51.7 to 181.0 nN. The giant gauge factor (GF) could be up to −620.5, which was enhanced by more than 10 times compared to the highest ever reported for SiC nanostructures.

The N and P co-doping-induced giant negative piezoresistance behaviors of SiC nanowires

Xin Cheng,Lin Wang,Fengmei Gao,Weiyou Yang,Zhentao Du,Ding Chen,Shanliang Chen

The third-generation semiconductor silicon carbide (SiC) is identified as one of the vitally important candidate materials to serve as a functional unit that performs stably and reliably under harsh working conditions, with respect to its excellent piezoresistive effects and robust physical/chemical characteristics. In the current work, we put forward the fabrication of SiC nanowires with co-doped N and P elements, which were fabricated via the pyrolysis of a polymeric material. The as-grown nanowires have a typical diameter of ∼260 nm with a 10 surface. The measured transverse piezoresistance coefficient π[10] of the established SiC nanowires increased from 5.07 to −146.30 × 10−11 Pa−1 as the loading forces varied from 24.95 to 130.51 nN. Meanwhile, the corresponding gauge factor (GF) was calculated up to ca. −877.79, which is higher than the values for all SiC nanostructures ever reported. The mechanism concerning the giant negative piezoresistance behavior of SiC nanowire is proposed. The current exploration may pave a new avenue for the development of highly sensitive and robust pressure sensors that could survive under harsh working conditions.

Structurally tunable conductive wood sponge incorporated with PEDOT: PSS for enhanced piezoresistive sensor applications

Wu You,Liu Junhui,Hu Zhengchuan,Zhou Weibo,Wu Wei,Wang Jieqiong,Ao Yuhui,Li Ming

Wearable strain sensors are gaining popularity in the field of intelligent electronic devices due to their compactness and mobility. In this study, we presented a wearable, pliable piezoresistive sensor derived from a wooden sponge integrated with the conductive polymer PEDOT. The conductive network of PEDOT: PSS underwent modulation through the incorporation of a cross-linking agent, namely, γ - glycidoxypropyltrimethoxysilane (GOPS), aimed at enhancing the sensor's sensitivity. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) confirmed that GOPS cross-linked with PEDOT: PSS. Crosslinking induced by GOPS helped PEDOT to form an ideal-network microstructure, thereby improving the sensitivity. Benefitting from this micro-network structure, the wood sponge/PEDOT:PSS/GOPS (WPG) exhibited a high sensitivity of 5.69 kPa −1 and a fast response time of 111 ms, with exceptional stability and durability (over 500 cycles), making it suitable for detecting subtle muscle changes. Crosslinking induced by GOPS induced PEDOT to form an ideal-network microstructure, thereby improving the sensitivity. The micro-network structure presented a novel approach for designing piezoresistive sensors.

Constructing the 3D Interconnected Conductive MXene-Cellulose Scaffold to Boosting the Piezoresistive Sensing Capability

Hongjian Zhang,Changzhou Du,Yong Zhang

Flexible pressure sensors play a vital role in advancing wearable electronics by enabling precise health monitoring, human-machine interfaces, and environmental sensing. MXene-based piezoresistive sensors have garnered significant attention due to their exceptional electromechanical properties. However, enhancing their performance and ensuring environmental sustainability simultaneously still remain critical challenge. In this study, we prepared hydroxyl-rich deacetylated cellulose acetate (DCA) fibers and attached MXene to the surface to form a three-dimensionally interconnected conductive network. Taking advantage of the typical micromorphology and in turn the high electrical conductivity modulation, the resulting MXene/DCA (MDCA) flexible sensors exhibited exceptionally high sensitivity (54.62 kPa–1), excellent linearity in the range of 0–40 kPa (R2 = 0.998), fast response/recovery time (154/125 ms), and outstanding long-term durability over 10 000 compression cycles at 12.37 kPa without significant degradation. This study offers promising insights into the development of high-performance, environmentally friendly piezoresistive sensors.

Reduced graphene oxide/polyaniline encapsulated SiO2 microspheres improve sensitivity and range of a piezoresistive pressure sensor

Hu Zhengchuan,Wu You,Tang Li,Zhou Weibo,Wang Jieqiong,Wu Wei,Li Ming,Wang Lu

Wood sponges, characterized by their low density and highly anisotropic porous structure, demonstrate significant potential for wearable and flexible electronic devices. However, fabricating multifunctional integrated sensors with wide operating ranges and linear response characteristics remains a challenge. In this study, we propose a polyaniline/graphene-modified wood sponge piezoresistive sensing material (PGWS). The synergistic interaction between polyaniline (PANI) microspheres and reduced graphene oxide (rGO) nanosheets enhances the structural stability of the sensor. The PGWS material exhibits high compressibility (up to 70% strain), excellent elasticity (95.36% height retention after 200 compression cycles), high sensitivity, and a broad pressure detection range (0–200 kPa). These advancements significantly improve the application prospects of wood sponge-based piezoresistive sensors in next-generation flexible electronics.

Microwave-Induced Construction of Flame-Retardant TPU Foams with Adjustable Sensitivity for Piezoresistive Sensing

Shan Tang,Jiahong Han,Yihui Xia,Yueyue Yu,Zhongming Li,Feng Wu,Yuhui Xie,Delong Xie,Hao Huang,Dong Feng

CNTs feature ultrahigh electrical conductivity and multiwall structure, contributing to the favorable interaction with microwaves, and accordingly evoke drastic energy conversion to the form of heat upon microwave irradiation. Herein, CNTs were ball milling assembled at the surface of expandable thermoplastic polyurethane/black phosphorus (e-TPU/BP) beads, where BP was used as a flame retardant, and served as the “interfacial sensitizer”, resulting in exceptional selective heating to inducing bubble formation in a continuous conductive network of TBC composite foams under the microwave field setting. The sinter-molded TBC composite foam possesses a high sensitivity of 550 kPa–1 over 0–0.4 MPa of compressive stress with an ultralow CNT content of 0.5 wt %, stability of over 1000 cycles, and durability of 5000 s. Moreover, BP also provided excellent flame retardant and antidripping properties at 2 wt % loading. Therefore, by utilizing the intense response of CNTs to microwaves, a universal approach was developed not only for foam molding but also for the functionalization of thermoplastic materials.

Two-dimensional MXene nanosheets on nano-scale fibrils in hierarchical porous structure to achieve ultra-high sensitivity

Bingjie Wu,Zhenghui Xie,Qiwu Shi,Junlong Yang,Chul B. Park,Pengjian Gong,Guangxian Li

The complex hybrid nanostructure combining a two-dimensional (2D) conductive material and a hierarchical nanoscale skeleton plays an important role to enhance its piezoresistive sensitivity. To construct such a novel hybrid nanostructure, a piezoresistive sensor was designed with the following strategy to take the full advantages of 2D MXene and nanoscale fibrils: ethylene oxide propylene oxide random copolymer (EOPO) was grafted to ethylene-vinyl alcohol (EVOH) molecular chains and was foamed by an environmentally-friendly supercritical CO2 (scCO2) foaming technology to fabricate abundant nanoscale EVOH fibrils surrounding micropores; MXene featured as a 2D structure of nanoscale size that strongly interacted with this hierarchical nanoscale skeleton, and MXene not only convolved on nanoscale fibrils to generate bumps but also MXene covered the end of broken fibrils to build spots, and furthermore, MXene adhered on the soft EOPO embedded EVOH fibrils to form wrinkles, in which these bumps, spots and wrinkles assembled by highly conductive 2D MXene offered sufficient contacts when the hierarchical nanoscale skeleton was compressed (these contacts would then destruct when the skeleton recovered). Such an elaborated hybrid nanostructural design exploits the full potential of 2D MXene and hence achieves an ultra-high sensitivity of 6895.0 kPa−1 for this fabricated MXene piezoresistive sensor.

3D Synergistical MXene/Reduced Graphene Oxide Aerogel for a Piezoresistive Sensor

Yanan Ma,Yang Yue,Hang Zhang,Feng Cheng,Wanqiu Zhao,Jiangyu Rao,Shijun Luo,Jie Wang,Xueliang Jiang,Zhitian Liu,Nishuang Liu,Yihua Gao

A piezoresistive sensor based on ultralight and superelastic aerogel is reported to fabricate MXene/reduced graphene oxide (MX/rGO) hybrid 3D structures and utilize their pressure-sensitive characteristics. The MX/rGO aerogel not only combines the rGO’s large specific surface area and the MXene’s (Ti3C2Tx) high conductivity but also exhibits rich porous structure, which leads to performance better than that of single-component rGO or MXene in terms of the pressure sensor. The large nanosheets of rGO can prevent the poor oxidization of MXene by wrapping MXene inside the aerogel. More importantly, the piezoresistive sensor based on the MX/rGO aerogel shows extremely high sensitivity (22.56 kPa–1), fast response time (<200 ms), and good stability over 10 000 cycles. The piezoresistive sensor based on the MX/rGO hybrid 3D aerogel can easily capture the signal below 10 Pa, thus clearly testing the pulse of an adult at random. Based on its superior performance, it also demonstrates potential applications in measuring pressure distribution, distinguishing subtle strain, and monitoring healthy activity.

3D printing of mechanically robust MXene-encapsulated polyurethane elastomer

Yuewei Li,Shuqiang Peng,Ranjith Kumar Kankala,Lixin Wu,Ai-Zheng Chen,Shi-Bin Wang

Despite the advantages and success in many fields, most elastomers currently fail to meet specific application requirements owing to their poor mechanical properties and limitations in the manufacturing of complex structures. 3D printing has emerged as an attractive manufacturing process for building a variety of complex structures for custom-configured elastic devices. In this study, we demonstrate the fabrication of elastic nanocomposites based on encapsulating 3-(trimethoxysilyl)propyl methacrylate-modified MXene nanosheets in a photocurable polyurethane acrylate resin (PAR) matrix by digital light processing 3D printing. The mechanical properties of the elastomers are tuned by varying the MXene amount in the PAR. The prepared MXene-PAR nanocomposites containing 0.1% w/w fillers exhibit a tensile strength and elongation at a break of 23.3 MPa and 404.3%, corresponding to an increase of 100.8% and 37.8%, respectively, as compared to the control. Piezoresistive sensors and wearable finger guard sensors are fabricated by coating a MXene-based hydrogel on the surface of the 3D-printed structural parts to determine the printability, mechanical properties, and conductivity. Furthermore, the as-prepared stretchable sensors exhibit long-term working stability. Together, our findings provide a new paradigm for the overall design of 3D-printed elastomers with excellent mechanical properties, which are anticipated to expand the scope of 3D printing.

Ultrathin Mo2S3 Nanowire Network for High-Sensitivity Breathable Piezoresistive Electronic Skins

Chendong Zhao,Yuqiang Fang,Hao Chen,Shaoning Zhang,Yingjie Wan,Muhammad Sohail Riaz,Zhuang Zhang,Wujie Dong,Lei Diao,Dayong Ren,Fuqiang Huang

Flexible piezosensing electronic skins (e-skins) have attracted considerable interest owing to their applications in real-time human-health monitoring, human–machine interactions, and soft bionic robot perception. However, the fabrication of piezosensing e-skins with high sensitivity, biological affinity, and good permeability at the same time is challenging. Herein, we designed and synthesized Mo2S3 nanowires by inserting ∞1[Mo2+S] chains between MoS2 interlayers. The resulting Mo2S3 nanowires feature high conductivity (4.9 × 104 S m–1) and a high aspect ratio (∼200). An ultrathin (∼500 nm) Mo2S3 nanowire network was fabricated using a simple liquid/liquid interface self-assembly method, showing high piezoresistive sensitivity (5.65 kPa–1), a considerably low pressure detection limit (0.08 Pa), and gratifying air permeability. Moreover, this nanowire network can be directly attached to human skin for real-time human pulse detection, finger movement monitoring, and sign language recognition, exhibiting excellent potential for health monitoring and human–machine interactions.

“Fire-beetles” inspired all-solid infrared sensor with bolometric and photomechanic dual sensing modes

Jingwen Yao,Yanbo Yao,Tao Liu

By mimicking the structure of the infrared-sensing organs of the “fire-beetles” of genus Melanophilaacuminata, we herein designed and fabricated an all-soild “fire-beetles” inspired infrared sensor, the key components of which is composed of a stress-concentrated photothermal expansion dendrite structure made of polydopamine enabled polydimethylsiloxane nanocomposite elastomer and a highly-sensitive piezoresistive membrane processed by direct laser writing carbonization. Our sensor possesses bolometric and photomechanic dual sensing modes, with the optimal responsivity of −1.4 W −1 and 2.2 W −1 , the detection limit of 0.03 mW/√Hz and 0.23 mW/√Hz, as well as the response time of 3.8 s and 2.5 s, respectively. The two-step photothermal and solid mechanics FEA modeling was performed to help understanding its sensing behavior in both bolometric and photomechanic operation modes, which indicates the possibility for orders-of-magnitude improvement on the responsiveness of our “fire-beetles” inspired IR sensor when increasing the bonding strength between the photothermal dendrite tip and the piezoresistive sensing membrane. The all-solid nature and the piezoresistive read-out scheme as well as its good performance make our sensor valuable for low-cost IR sensing applications.

Ion gradient induced self-powered flexible pressure sensor

Qi Huang,Yadong Jiang,Zaihua Duan,Yuanming Wu,Zhen Yuan,Mingxiang Zhang,Huiling Tai

Various self-powered flexible pressure sensors (including piezoelectric, triboelectric and electrochemical types) have attracted great attentions and made significant progresses, but they also have some shortcomings, such as the inability to detect static pressure (piezoelectric and triboelectric types) and performance degradation (electrochemical type). Inspired by the ion gradient power generation mechanism, we propose a self-powered flexible pressure sensor based on pressure regulated ion gradient coupled with piezoresistive effect. The proposed pressure sensor is mainly composed of high humidity region (LiCl-filter paper (FP)) and low humidity region (carbon nanotubes-FP). The results show that the sensor can directly output current signal with a wide pressure range (0.1–100 kPa). Based on the output voltage and current signals and the morphology characterization, the power generation and pressure sensing mechanisms of the sensor are clarified using the ion gradient and piezoresistive effects. In addition, the sensor can be used to identify different respiratory states in combination with machine learning. This work provides a new strategy for constructing self-powered pressure sensor based on pressure regulated ion gradient strategy coupled with piezoresistive effect.
