Aluminum nitride (AlN) ceramics are widely utilized in various applications due to their exceptional properties. However, fabricating complex AlN components using conventional machining techniques remains challenging. To address this issue, Digital Light Processing (DLP) is proposed as a viable technique for manufacturing intricate AlN ceramics. A key challenge in this process is the moisture absorption and hydrolysis of AlN powders, which significantly increase slurry viscosity and affect the layer-by-layer accumulation of AlN slurry. This study systematically investigated the particle size distribution, rheological behavior, and curing kinetics of AlN slurry processed with different ball-milling times. At a ball-milling time of 8 h, the slurry with a 54 vol% solid loading exhibited a viscosity of 21.1 Pa.s at a shear rate of 27 s −1 and a curing depth of 83 μm at an energy dose of 74.4 mJ/cm². Following debinding and sintering, the sintered AlN ceramics achieved a flexural strength of 98.7 MPa, a bulk density of 2.74 g/cm³ , and an open porosity of 12.82 %. These findings provide critical insights into optimizing slurry preparation and processing parameters for the DLP-based fabrication of AlN ceramics.

Digital light processing 3D printing can be applied to fabricate complex silicon nitride (Si 3 N 4 ) components. However, because of the surface hydroxyl groups and large refractive index , it is still a foremost challenge to realize a stable photosensitive Si 3 N 4 slurry with combined benefits of low viscosity and large curing depth. In this study, we propose a new formulation strategy to prepare Si 3 N 4 slurry. Starting from the optimization of monomer ratio, we have systematically optimized powder particle size, dispersant and photoinitiator on the rheological properties and curing properties of Si 3 N 4 slurry. Specifically, we have fabricated a stable photosensitive Si 3 N 4 slurry (48 vol%) with a viscosity of 2.09 Pa s (30 s −1 ), a critical curing energy of 126.09 mJ/cm 2 and a maximum curing depth of 80 µm. Finally, based on this optimized slurry, we have successfully obtained complex Si 3 N 4 green body with no defect, which demonstrates great potential to fabricate arbitrary complex ceramic components for various applications.

A series of photosensitive zirconia ceramic slurry with adjustable viscosity and cured depth have been presented for the construction of high-quality zirconia ceramic fabricated by digital light processing 3D printing. The rheological and curing behavior of the slurry can be flexibly optimized by tuning the reactive diluent concentration and category, since the change of dominant position of diluent on viscosity and the different curing mode. Monofunctional reactive diluent (HEA, hydroxyethyl acrylate) exhibits an enhanced dilution effect compared with that of bifunctional reactive diluent (HDDA, 1,6-hexamethylene diacrylate) due to the lower molecular mass of monofunctional diluent. As a result, the viscosity reaches lower than 2000 mPa·s when the concentration of both HEA and HDDA exceeds 50 wt.%. At the same time, the non-Newtonian properties of the slurry are also changed, which facilitates the printing process. However, excessive addition of diluent may generate more defects in ceramic green body. Consequently, the cured depth of zirconia slurry can reach 55 and 50 µm, respectively, at the curing time of 3 s while introducing the HEA or HDDA with the concentration below 70 wt.%, and the modified feedstock is promising for high-quality and low-defect zirconia ceramic components printing for biomedical applications.

In recent years, additive manufacturing of biodegradable composite ceramics has attracted widespread attention. This study explores the vat photopolymerization (VP) of Ca 3 (PO 4 ) 2 / MgO composite ceramics, investigating the VP slurry and the effects of material composition and light-curing parameters on the monolayer curing depth and excess curing width of the green body. When the curing parameters are consistent, the monolayer curing depth of the Ca 3 (PO 4 ) 2 group, composite group, and MgO group samples decreases successively. Whereas, the excess curing width sequentially increases. When the material is the same and the exposure energy is constant, the impact of exposure time on monolayer curing depth is higher than that of exposure intensity. Regarding excess curing width, the situation is completely reversed. This research serves as a reference for the development of composite ceramic slurries and the process of photopolymerization, providing theoretical guidance for controlling the precision of subsequent photopolymerization shaping.

The attenuation coefficient of ultraviolet UV light is a critical factor influencing the mechanical properties of photocurable ceramics. Aiming to fabricate high-precision and high-performance ZrO2 ceramics, this study systematically investigates the impact of the UV attenuation coefficient on the polymerization kinetics of ZrO2 ceramic slurries. Through linear fitting, the absorption and scattering coefficients of the ZrO2 slurry were determined as 66 cm−1. By integrating the Beer-Lambert law, we further validated how the UV attenuation coefficient affects the variation in C=C double bond conversion within the cured slurry layers. Additionally, based on Mie scattering theory, although the incident energy was 52 mW cm−2 and slice thickness was 50 μm, the curing depth Cd and exposure energy In{E}_{o} is optimal. The ZrO2 ceramic was formed , in which the sintered sample density was 6.02 g cm−3 (99%).

Photoactivating dental resin composites have been the most prevailing material for repairing dental defects in various clinical scenarios due to their multiple advantages. However, compared to other restorative materials, the surface of resin-based composites is more susceptible to plaque biofilm accumulation, which can lead to secondary caries and restoration failure. This study introduced different weight fractions (1, 2, 5, 10, and 15%) of magnesium oxide nanoparticles (MgONPs) as antibacterial fillers into dental resin composites. Multifarious properties of the material were investigated, including antibacterial activity against a human salivary plaque-derived biofilm, cytotoxicity on human gingival fibroblasts, mechanical and physicochemical properties as well as the performance when subjected to thermocycling aging treatment. Results showed that the incorporation of MgONPs significantly improved the composites’ anti-biofilm capability even at a low amount of 2 wt % without compromising the mechanical, physicochemical, and biocompatibility performances. The results of the thermocycling test suggested certain of aging resistance. Moreover, a small amount of MgONPs possibly made a difference in enhancing photoactivated polymerization and increasing the curing depth of experimental resin composites. Overall, this study highlights the potential of MgONPs as an effective strategy for developing antibacterial resin composites, which may help mitigating cariogenic biofilm-associated secondary caries.

Vat photopolymerization (VPP) 3D printing technology allows the fabrication of complex ceramic structure components through the layer-by-layer stacking strategy. The curing depth is a crucial parameter for the stacking process, as it directly impacts the printing quality. Furthermore, this parameter exerts a profound effect on the final quality of the printed part. However, there is currently a lack of comprehensive research on how the curing depth affects VPP ceramic 3D printing . This study aims to thoroughly evaluate the impact of curing depth parameters on critical aspects of the 3D printing process, including the forming accuracy, surface quality, monomer conversion , resin pyrolysis , interlayer defects, and mechanical properties. The results of our investigation clearly demonstrate the significant influence of curing depth on the precision and performance of VPP 3D printed ceramic parts. Ceramic samples produced with higher curing depth exhibited superior surface quality (Ra<1.6 μm) but lower forming accuracy. Increasing the curing depth improved interlayer adhesion but excessive depth led to a decreased monomer conversion content from 5.2 % to 2.0 % and an internal stress in the green body. Moreover, increasing the curing depth intensified the pyrolysis process and increased the propensity for cracks forming, as confirmed by simultaneous thermal analysis and microstructure observations . The flexural strength of the sintered samples reached its maximum value of 630 MPa at three times the printing layer thickness. This study provides valuable insights for selecting appropriate curing depth parameters in VPP ceramic 3D printing.

Stereolithography-based additive manufacturing (AM) makes it possible to realize high-quality ceramic parts with various shapes. However, preparation of ceramic slurry with high solid loading, low viscosity, long-term stability, and desirable cure depth for stereolithography is still challenging. In this paper, research is carried out for revealing the effects of dispersant, solid loading, and mixing method on the stability and viscosity of the slurry. Under optimized conditions, a highly stable yttria-stabilized zirconia ceramic slurry with high solid loading (45 vol.%) was prepared by grinding with a three-roller mill. With layer thickness of 30 μm and exposure dose of 10 mJ/cm 2 (10 mW/cm 2 for 1 s), ceramic green bodies with complex shape were successfully fabricated. After sintering, the final ceramic parts showed well-defined shapes with high level of densification. Graphical
In this work, 3Y-TZP ceramic slurry was successfully prepared by the modified powders via dispersant and grinding and dispersing with a three-roller mill. Finally, ceramic parts with complex shape and excellent performance were achieved.
