Fabrication of flexible acoustic metamaterials by growing metal-organic frameworks on fabrics

Chen Jiahao,Li Huiqin,Zhu Hejin,Gong Jixian,Zhang Chunchun,Li Zheng,Li Qiujin,Liu Xiuming,Xu Jianlin,Zhang Jianfei

As an acoustic metamaterial, Metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) can absorb sound energy abnormally. In this research, a thin and flexible acoustic material was prepared by growing MOF on the fabric. The successful growth of MIL-53(Fe) on the fiber surface was confirmed by SEM, FTIR, XRD and XPS. From the sound absorption and sound insulation test results of MIL-53(Fe)@fabric, the in-situ growth of MIL-53(Fe) greatly improves the sound absorption and sound insulation performance of the fabric, and gives the fabric an abnormal acoustic effect. From the calculation results of the theoretical model, the growth of the sub-wavelength scale MIL-53(Fe) significantly increases the flow resistance of the fabric, which is the root cause of the abnormal sound absorption of the material. It is worth noting that the sound transmission loss of the prepared flexible material doesn’t follow the mass law and exhibits excellent sound insulation performance. This is not only related to the increase in the sound energy reflected by the fabric, but also to the abnormal sound absorption of MIL-53(Fe). Here, the sound insulation performance of MOFs@fabric is reported for the first time. This work promotes the research and application of MOFs in the field of acoustics, and provides a method and theoretical basis for the design and preparation of acoustic protection textiles. Viscoelastic polyacrylate with hierarchical hollow zeolite for sound insulation

Yanxin Li,Nana Ji,Huiqi Qu,Jingyi Lin,Dong Wang,Ruizhi Meng,Bin Li,Lei Wang,Shaoxiang Li

Acoustic materials embed with inorganic fillers in viscoelastic polymers have promising applications in industrial settings. However, optimizing the sound insulation of composites by adjusting the microstructure of nanofillers remains a challenge. In this study, we synthesize adjustable hollow hierarchical Zeolite Socony Mobil #5 (ZSM-5) which can be used as nanofillers in a sound insulation nanocomposite based on the polyacrylate (PA). The results show that the nanocomposites with 0.5 wt% hierarchical hollow ZSM-5 can increase the sound transmission loss (STL) by 33.4%. The maximum STL value reaches as high as 40 dB. The damping properties of the nanocomposites were also improved by adding ZSM-5 into the PA matrix. When the loading of hollow ZSM-5 is 0.5 wt%, the storage modulus increased by 44%, as high as 4486.7 MPa. This strategy opens up a promising way for the sound insulation of composites based on controllable inorganic nanofillers.

3D-printed programmable hierarchical hole-cavity architectures of fully cellulose nanofibrils for tunable broadband sound absorption

Wei Chen,Luyao Ding,Qingbiao Li,Jiahui Shen,Jiajia Zheng,Xiping Li,Zhonglue Hu,Shaohua Jiang,Shanglin Xiao,Yiming Chen

The integration of broadband sound absorption with environmental sustainability remains a key challenge in advanced material design. In this work, an innovative 3D-printed cellulose nanofibril (CNF) architecture with a customizable hierarchical “hole-cavity unity” structure was proposed for highly efficient sound absorption. This multi-scale structural design strategy synergistically coupled the perforated-panel acoustic principles with nanoscale viscous dissipation mechanisms. By leveraging the shear-thinning behavior of CNF inks and the precision control of direct ink writing, the sub-millimeter periodic pore arrays were embedded within the continuous nanofibrous network, enabling programmable structural tunability across multiple pore scales. Systematic regulation of infill ratio and sample thickness yielded high sound absorption coefficients (>0.7) over an ultra-broad frequency range of 1.2–6.3 kHz. Combined with low shrinkage, structural customizability, low density, and rapid environmental degradability, the fully bio-based 3D-printed CNF architectures are expected to offer a promising and sustainable solution for developing next-generation acoustic materials for noise control applications.

Mechanical and Sound Absorption Properties of Ice-Templated Porous Cement Co-Incorporated with Silica Fume and Fly Ash

Xiaoyang Zhang,Kang Peng,Bin Xiao,Jianxin Yang,Bao Yang,Boyuan Li

Reducing the consumption of energy-intensive cement and promoting the resource utilization of industrial waste are two critical challenges that should be urgently addressed to achieve the goals of carbon neutrality and green sustainable development in the building materials field. Among these, the massive stockpiling of industrial waste such as fly ash and silica fume poses serious threats to the environment and human health, making their efficient utilization an urgent need to alleviate environmental pressure. This study employs the ice-template method to incorporate fly ash and silica fume as functional components into a cement-based system, fabricating a novel composite material. This material features a layered porous structure, which not only reduces cement usage but also results in a lighter weight. The introduction of the ice-templating method successfully constructed an anisotropic lamellar structure, leading to significant enhancements in flexural strength and toughness—by approximately 26.6% and 30%, respectively, vertical to the lamellae compared to conventional dense cement. Meanwhile, the hybrid blend of silica fume and fly ash effectively improved the deformability of the material, as evidenced by a notable increase in compressive failure strain. These excellent behaviors of mechanical properties are attributed to the formation of a multi-scale microstructure characterized by “macroscopically continuous and microscopically dense” features. Moreover, this specific microstructure offers greater advantages in sound absorption performance. The acoustic impedance tube tests demonstrate that the noise reduction coefficient of the novel cement-based material incorporating fly ash and silica fume is improved by 82%, holding promising applications in noise reduction for the construction and transportation fields. This research provides a feasible pathway for the high-value application of industrial solid waste in low-carbon materials.

Piezoelectric Voiceprint Recognition Based on 3D Nanofiber Aerogel

Weibang Xia,Yuchen Cai,Dan Chen,Jinpeng Wang,Dong Wang,Lingjuan Xu,Lu Zhang,Beibei Huang,Guigang Li,Yunming Wang

Poor acoustic-electric performance and limited sound information extraction capabilities restrict the widespread application of acoustic sensors in voiceprint recognition. Efficient human-machine voice interaction requires the development of acoustic sensors with higher performance and rich recognition capabilities at the underlying design level. This work constructed a piezoelectric-based L-polylactic acid/silk fibroin (PLLA/SF) acoustic-driven nanofiber aerogel (ANA) for voiceprint recognition. The 3D porous structural network of PLLA/SF ANA exhibits greater structural deformation capability under equivalent acoustic stimulation, effectively enhancing acoustic-electric conversion performance. The PLLA/SF ANA device achieves a wideband response (90–1000 Hz), high sensitivity (16 V·Pa −1 ), high electrical output (65.6 V, 10.59 µA), and satisfactory resolution (1 Hz). Leveraging this excellent acoustic-electric response performance it enables effective voiceprint recognition, including voice identity and emotion perception, through characteristic spectrum analysis of the electrical response signal, thus providing new ideas for future self-powered human-machine voice interaction.

Optimization of Interfacial Strengthening and Sound Absorption Properties of Acid–Alkali Nano-SiO2 Infiltrant Synergistically Modified Basalt Fiber Fabric/Epoxy Composites

Liu Shuai,Liu Fang,Guan Liandi,Zhang Jianwei

BF is a promising reinforcing material for resin matrix composites. Still, it fails to fully utilize its excellent mechanical and functional properties due to the weak interfacial bonding between BF and the resin matrix. In this work, the fibers were treated by acid and alkali synergistically with nano-infiltrant (containing nano-SiO 2 ) to improve the inertness of the fiber surface and enhance the interfacial bonding. Then, BFFC was prepared by hand-coating bisphenol F epoxy resin on the surface of BFF. The microstructure, mechanical properties, durability, thermal stability, and sound absorption properties of the composites were investigated. The results showed that the acid and alkali synergistic nano-infiltrant-modified BF surfaces showed excellent interfacial bonding with increased roughness and reactive groups, which effectively revised the bonding strength between BF and the resin matrix. In particular, the tensile strength, durability, and thermal stability of the composites with alkali synergistic nano-infiltrant were revised by 59.8%, 45.9%, and 48.1%, respectively, compared with the untreated samples, and the structure of the composites was also optimized to enhance the sound-absorbing performance, reaching an average sound absorption coefficient of 0.49. In future, it can promote the development of BF composites toward multi-functionalization.

Soft bio-metamaterials with high acoustic transparency and gradient refractive index for tunable acoustic beamformer

Jinhu Zhang,Nana Zhou,Erqian Dong,Chuang Zhang,Zhongchang Song,Sheng Liu,Chen Yang,Xiaochun Su,Shujia Wang,Yu Zhang

Dolphins utilize soft forehead tissues for dynamic detection by efficiently transmitting and manipulating broadband acoustic waves. Imparting high acoustic transparency, gradient refractive index, and softness to acoustic functional materials can significantly enhance sound wave manipulation. Conventional metamaterials, consisting of solid and impedance-mismatched meta-atoms, have limitations in achieving acoustic transparency and flexibility. Here, we overcome these constraints with a new class of acoustic soft bio-metamaterials (SBMs) composed of solid microparticles or liquid microdroplets dispersed in a hyper-elastomer. The SBMs exhibit an extraordinary combination of high acoustic transparency with transmission coefficients near 1, a gradient refractive index above 1.25, and a low elastic modulus under 100 kPa comparable to biological tissues. Furthermore, we developed a dolphin-inspired tunable subwavelength acoustic beamformer using SBMs, which can dynamically modulate acoustic beam patterns through mechanical stretching. SBMs offer a new design paradigm for acoustic soft metamaterials and have potential applications in underwater monitoring and biomedical ultrasound.

Reconfigurable Acoustic Printing for Conformal and Minimally Invasive Repair

Chaochao Sun,Zhen Li,Amr Osman,Yingqiang Wang,Hanyang Yu,Wanying Wang,Zhen Yu,Yunhu He,Yuhan Chen,Xuliang Chen,Zhengyi Mao,Ying Li,Yuanchao Liu,Mulin Miao,Yulong Wang,Daniel Ahmed,Jian Lu

Minimally invasive tissue repair is essential in reconstructive and orthopedic surgery to reduce infection and scarring. However, current 3D/4D printing and stimulus-responsive materials remain constrained by the need for larger incisions and limited penetration of light and heat stimuli. Here, reconfigurable acoustic printing (RAP), a platform that harnesses focused acoustic waves to enable remote printing, healing, and shape reconfiguration with centimeter-scale penetration depths through biological tissue, is introduced. By using a specially formulated bioacoustic ink, RAP achieves high-resolution transcutaneous solidification and reconfigurable shape morphing, inspired by origami principles. Acoustic stimulation further induces controlled material softening, allowing precise structural repair and localized reconfiguration. In live animal models, RAP successfully demonstrates in vivo transcutaneous printing and conformable defect repair. This strategy establishes a versatile and powerful approach for minimally invasive biomedical applications, spanning tissue engineering, implant repair, and aesthetic medicine.

Grain-Growth-Inhibited Mullite Fiber Sponges with Superior Thermal Insulation and Sound Absorption Properties

Li Jiaxin,Zhai Yaling,Su Xiaolong,Lu Zhenyan,Zhao Jian,Tian Guichao,Jia Chao,Zhu Meifang

Mullite fiber is one of the most outstanding oxide ceramic fibers for maintaining high-temperature performance while retaining flexibility. However, the rapid grain growth within mullite fibers inevitably compromises their flexibility, making the suppression of grain growth a significant challenge. Here, we develop high-performance mullite fibers with excellent flexibility at 1500 °C by optimizing the precursor-to-polymer molar ratio via solution blow spinning. Proper ratio control reduces excessive polymer content, minimizes pore defects, and, more importantly, suppresses grain growth during high-temperature treatment, thereby enhancing thermal stability and preserving fiber flexibility. The mullite fiber sponges exhibit excellent compressive resilience, high-temperature thermal insulation, and sound absorption properties. The sponges withstand 1000 compression-recovery cycles, achieve an ultralow thermal conductivity of 0.028 W m −1  K −1 , and demonstrate a sound reduction coefficient of up to 0.82. This study highlights the optimization of precursor-to-polymer ratios as a promising strategy to enhance mullite fiber properties, providing valuable insights for efficiently producing high-performance ceramic fibers and potentially extending to the fabrication of other ceramic fiber materials.
