Acoustic cavitation serves various therapeutic purposes, with both microbubbles and phase-transit droplets serving as potential cavitation nuclei. This project focused on investigating the intricate interaction between microbubbles and droplets and the resultant impact on acoustic cavitation. To facilitate this investigation, microbubbles with a negative potential of −51.58 mV were prepared, while droplets were endowed with a positive potential of +4.22 mV, facilitating the formation of microbubble-droplet clusters. Microscopic analysis was employed to observe the morphology of these clusters, revealing an initial mean size of 4.85 µm before ultrasound activation and subsequent transformation into larger bubbles with a mean size of 12.54 µm after ultrasound activation. The experimental approach involved the use of varying driven voltages to generate ultrasound waves with different intensities. A passive cavitation detector (PCD) was then employed to capture cavitation signals. Results demonstrated that, when maintaining a microbubble ratio of 50% and varying droplet ratios from 0% to 50%, the driven voltage at which the cavitation peak appeared decreased from 180 mV to 140 mV. Additionally, the mean cavitation intensity exhibited an initial increase from 0.58 to 0.78, followed by a subsequent decrease from 0.78 to 0.63 after normalization. This study provided valuable insights into the dynamic interactions between microbubbles and droplets. Specifically, it showed that microbubble cavitation transferred energy to droplets, leading to the generation of larger bubbles and higher cavitation intensity. Nevertheless, the observed cavitation intensity and threshold were contingent upon the ratios of microbubbles and droplets. Notably, to achieve an ideal cavitation intensity, the energy generated by microbubble cavitation must be substantial enough to activate all droplets, inducing acoustic droplet vaporization (ADV) and cavitation.

Acoustic metasurfaces that can manipulate and control sound waves at 2D subwavelength scales open new avenues to unusual applications, such as asymmetric transmission, super-resolution imaging, and particle manipulation. However, the long-standing goals of pushing frontier metamaterials research into real practice are still severely constrained by cumbersome configuration, large acoustic loss, and rigid structure of the existing metamaterials. An ultrathin metasurface (10–300 µm in thickness, up to ≈λ/650, λ the wavelength) that is capable of imparting sound wave with a nontrivial phase shift with high transmittance (>80%) in the range of 5–30 kHz is fabricated here. The metasurface is comprised of a porous network of soft polymer fiber/rigid beads that are physically equivalent to crosslinked spring-mass resonators. Moreover, the traditional paper-cutting art to carve the ultrathin metasurface into hollow-out patterns is incorporated, resulting in a variety of remarkable functions, including acoustic vortex, focusing, and super-resolution. The hollow-out patterning approach innovates the traditional one-step metadevice fabrication process into two separated steps: 1) fabrication of ultrathin metasurfaces; 2) hollow-out patterning of metasurfaces. The strategy opens an avenue to mass production of acoustic metadevices, shedding light on the applications of the metamaterials in acoustic cloaking, acoustic positioning, and particle manipulation.

We report on the behavior of levitated soap bubbles in a single-axis acoustic field. For a single bubble, its surface in the polar regions is under compression, but in the equatorial region, it is under suction. Levitation becomes unstable when the height of the bubble approaches half the wavelength of the sound wave because horizontal fluctuations lead to a negative recovery force and a negative levitation force. Vertically stacked double bubbles notably can be stable under levitation if their total vertical length is ∼5λ/6, significantly beyond λ/2 in consequence of the formation of a toroidal high-pressure region around the waist of the two bubbles. Our results provide a deeper insight into the stability of acoustic levitation and the coupling between bubbles and sound field.

Acoustic porous medium is regarded as a promising filling material to enhance the acoustic volume and reproduce low frequency in modern closed-box microloudspeakers. Zeolites have attracted extensive attention because the sorption and diffusion of air molecules in their unique rigid-frame pores can lead to sound attenuation. However, these properties are hard to reserve after shaping micrometer-sized zeolite crystals into hundred-micrometer monolith particles. Herein, we report the synthesis of highly porous ZSM-5 zeolite spherical granules via a simple emulsification/internal gelation process. Aqueous alginate solution containing zeolites and CaCO3 was emulsified into paraffin oil, followed by the release of Ca2+ ions to cross-link with the polysaccharide residues and immobilize labile zeolites under weakly acidic conditions, forming granules with high sphericity. Highly porous zeolite granules with 301–427 μm in diameter were obtained by calcination, which preserved over 98% of the specific surface area and 93% of the porosity of original zeolites. In the acoustic test, 1.0 cm3 ZSM-5 granule filling demonstrated the largest resonance offset of 316 Hz. It was speculated that sound energy was converted into heat through the adsorption and diffusion of air molecules inside nanopores, as well as interscale diffusion, ultimately improving acoustic compliance. The present mild granulation method is expected to efficiently produce large-scale zeolite granules as promising filling materials for acoustic applications.

A shear thickening fluid (STF) was prepared from SiO2/PEG200 by ball-milling and its effect on the sound insulation properties of textile materials investigated. The rheological properties of the STF were evaluated using a high-speed rotary rheometer and a field emission scanning electron microscope. Fabrics based on fibers of profiled cross-section were knitted on a computerized flat knitting machine, then dipped in the diluted STF and the microstructure and the sound insulating properties of the STF-treated fabrics were established using a two-channel acoustic analyzer. It was found that an increase in the SiO2 content of the STF decreased the critical shear rate, and the thickening effect of the STF system became effective once the SiO2 content reached 30 wt%. The sound insulation performance of the STF-treated fabrics was superior to that of the untreated fabrics, and their level of sound insulation level was particularly increased with increasing surface density.

Purpose The Nakagami statistical model and Nakagami shape parameter m have been widely used in linear tissue characterization and preliminarily characterized the envelope distributions of nonlinear encapsulated microbubbles (EMBs). However, the Nakagami distribution of nonlinear scattering EMBs lacked a systematical investigation. Thus, this study aimed to investigate the Nakagami distribution of EMBs and illustrate the impact of EMBs' nonlinearity on the Nakagami model. Method A group of simulated EMB phantoms and in vitro EMB dilutions with an increasing concentration distribution under various EMB nonlinearities, as regulated by acoustic parameters, were characterized by using the window-modulated compounding Greenwood–Durand estimator. Results Raw envelope histograms of simulated and in vitro EMBs were well matched with the Nakagami distribution with a high correlation coefficient of 0.965 ± 0.021 ( P < 0.005). The mean values and gradients of m parameters of simulated and in vitro EMBs were smaller than those of linear scatterers due to the stronger nonlinearity. These m values exhibited a quasi-linear improvement with the increase in second harmonic nonlinear-to-linear component ratio regulated by pulse lengths and excitation frequencies at low- and high-concentration conditions. Conclusions The Nakagami distribution was suitable for the EMBs characterization but the corresponding m parameter was affected by the EMBs' nonlinearity. These validations provided support and nonlinear impact assessment for the EMBs' characterization using the Nakagami statistical model in the future.

The design of soft robots capable of navigation underwater has received tremendous research interest due to the robots’ versatile applications in marine explorations. Inspired by marine animals such as jellyfish, scientists have developed various soft robotic fishes by using elastomers as the major material. However, elastomers have a hydrophobic network without embedded water, which is different from the gel-state body of the prototypes and results in high contrast to the surrounding environment and thus poor acoustic stealth. Here, we demonstrate a manta ray-inspired soft robot fish with tailored swimming motions by using tough and stiff hydrogels as the structural elements, as well as a dielectric elastomer as the actuating unit. The switching between actuated and relaxed states of this unit under wired power leads to the flapping of the pectoral fins and swimming of the gel fish. This robot fish has good stability and swims with a fast speed (∼10 cm/s) in freshwater and seawater over a wide temperature range (4–50 °C). The high water content (i.e., ∼70 wt %) of the robot fish affords good optical and acoustic stealth properties under water. The excellent mechanical properties of the gels also enable easy integration of other functional units/systems with the robot fish. As proof-of-concept examples, a temperature sensing system and a soft gripper are assembled, allowing the robot fish to monitor the local temperature, raise warning signals by lighting, and grab and transport an object on demand. Such a robot fish should find applications in environmental detection and execution tasks under water. This work should also be informative for the design of other soft actuators and robots with tough hydrogels as the building blocks.

Environmentally friendly aerogels with high performance and multifunction are the next generation of materials with potential applications in thermal insulation and acoustic absorption. It is a great challenge to make a material combining excellent specific strength, good thermal conductivity and low-frequency sound absorption properties, because these properties often have contradictory structural requirements. In this study, we develop a new strategy to resolve the above problem by preparing β-cyclodextrin (β-CD) aerogel with a hierarchical and wood-like porous structure. The unique vertically arranged lamellar structure with the “bridge” between the lamellar not only reduces the solid heat conduction and heat transfer effectively, but also gives β-CD aerogels (BRAA) superior mechanical properties. As a result, the radial thermal conductivity of BRAA is as low as 0.016 W m −1 K −1 , and the ultra-light aerogel BRAA can withstand nearly 3000 times its own weight. Furthermore, BRAA exhibits outstanding low-frequency sound absorption performance (sound absorption coefficient up to 0.995 at 750 Hz) due to its hierarchical and aligned porous structure. In addition, BRAAs show excellent environmental friendliness since biomass CD as raw materials and have good regenerative ability.

Chlamydomonas, a microorganism with significant potential for various biotechnological and industrial applications. However, bioorganisms are always vulnerable and contingent, while artificial microrobots with robust and stable mechanical properties, making them highly desirable for expanding applications. Herein, we propose an artificial Chlamydomonas-like acoustics-actuated microrobot. Through the numerical simulation, we investigated the impact of tail tip angle and tail spacing on acoustic streaming intensity. Our findings reveal that smaller tip angles and wider tail spacing result in stronger acoustic streaming intensity. Based on optimization, we propose a microrobot structure with a tail tip angle of 5° and a tail spacing of 100 µm. Ultraviolet (UV) polymerization is employed to fabricate the microrobot. The effect of exposure time on manufacturing precision is examined. The acoustic propulsion of the bioinspired microrobot is verified by experiments, and the velocity of the microrobot can reach as fast as approximately 200 µm/s. Meanwhile, the vibration amplitude of the microrobot tail can be easily adjusted by the applied voltage . These findings not only provide important guidelines for the rational design of microrobots, but also offer novel insights into the applications of acoustic-driven techniques.

Minimally invasive tissue repair is essential in reconstructive and orthopedic surgery to reduce infection and scarring. However, current 3D/4D printing and stimulus-responsive materials remain constrained by the need for larger incisions and limited penetration of light and heat stimuli. Here, reconfigurable acoustic printing (RAP), a platform that harnesses focused acoustic waves to enable remote printing, healing, and shape reconfiguration with centimeter-scale penetration depths through biological tissue, is introduced. By using a specially formulated bioacoustic ink, RAP achieves high-resolution transcutaneous solidification and reconfigurable shape morphing, inspired by origami principles. Acoustic stimulation further induces controlled material softening, allowing precise structural repair and localized reconfiguration. In live animal models, RAP successfully demonstrates in vivo transcutaneous printing and conformable defect repair. This strategy establishes a versatile and powerful approach for minimally invasive biomedical applications, spanning tissue engineering, implant repair, and aesthetic medicine.

This paper investigated the influence of needle gauge (19G and 27G), injection rate (0.85 ml·min −1 , 3 ml·min −1 ) and temperature (room temperature (RT) and body temperature (BT)) on the mean diameter, concentration, acoustic attenuation, contrast to tissue ratio (CTR) and normalised subharmonic intensity (NSI) of three ultrasound contrast agents (UCAs): Definity , SonoVue and MicroMarker (untargeted). A broadband substitution technique was used to acquire the acoustic properties over the frequency range 17–31 MHz with a preclinical ultrasound scanner Vevo770 (Visualsonics, Canada). Significant differences ( P < 0.001 − P < 0.05) between typical in vitro setting (19G needle, 3 ml·min −1 at RT) and typical in vivo setting (27G needle, 0.85 ml·min −1 at BT) were found for SonoVue and MicroMarker. Moreover we found that the mean volume-based diameter and concentration of both SonoVue and Definity reduced significantly when changing from typical in vitro to in vivo experimental set-ups, while those for MicroMarker did not significantly change. From our limited measurements of Definity, we found no significant change in attenuation, CTR and NSI with needle gauge. For SonoVue, all the measured acoustic properties (attenuation, CTR and NSI) reduced significantly when changing from typical in vitro to in vivo experimental conditions, while for MicroMarker, only the NSI reduced, with attenuation and CTR increasing significantly. These differences suggest that changes in physical compression and temperature are likely to alter the shell structure of the UCAs resulting in measureable and significant changes in the physical and high frequency acoustical properties of the contrast agents under typical in vitro and preclinical in vivo experimental conditions.

The precise and effective generation and manipulation of micron-sized droplets is crucial for chemical and biological research and applications. Normally, droplets generation and manipulation are achieved by two separate devices/systems with their respective operation strategies. Pipette, inkjet nozzle, and microfluidic channels equipped with programed syringes are commonly used for droplets generation whereas the subsequent manipulation is normally achieved by leveraging of forces originating either from optical, electric, magnetic or acoustic field and the corresponding complicated devices. Here we report a new paradigm that can realize simultaneous droplets generation and manipulation in an immiscible liquid environment using only the confined interface vibration generated by the ordinary inkjet nozzle. Droplets, ranging from femtoliter to picoliter, can be generated and manipulated without interruption since they are actuated by the same nozzle. Our strategy provides a platform for precise generation and manipulating the micro-sized droplets that may be valuable for applications requiring simple setups and seamless connection between droplets generation and droplets manipulation.
