To further enhance the photocatalytic properties of doped-TiO 2 , a series of (N, Cu) co-doped TiO 2 /rectorite composites with different amount of N doping were prepared for adsorption and catalytic oxidation of p -chlorophenol ( p -CP) under visible light. The physicochemical properties of the obtained composites were analyzed by X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), etc. The results showed that the (N, Cu) co-doped TiO 2 catalyst was immobilized well onto rectorite , and the doping of N and Cu could affect the crystal structure of TiO 2 . The optimal N doping amount was determined by the photocatalytic degradation of p -CP in a stirred quartz reactor under visible light (> 420 nm) irradiation. It was found that the doping of N can improve significantly the degradation of p -CP and the optimum N doping amount is 1.0%. The adsorption of p -CP by the composites could accelerate the degradation rate of p -CP in situ. The photocatalytic activity of the (N, Cu) co-doped TiO 2 /rectorite composites remained stable after five cycles of photoreaction. A possible mechanism for the photocatalytic degradation of p -CP is proposed. Our work implied that rectorite has great potential to be applied in the field of photocatalysis .

Phenolic compounds are common industrial pollutants that seriously endangers water ecology and human health. Therefore, the development of efficient and recyclable adsorbents is of importance for wastewater treatment . In this research, HCNTs/Fe 3 O 4 composites were constructed using co-precipitation way by loading magnetic Fe 3 O 4 particles onto hydroxylated multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs), showing excellent adsorption capacity for Bisphenol A (BPA) and p -chlorophenol ( p -CP), and excellent catalytic ability of activating potassium persulphate (KPS) for degradation of BPA and p -CP. The adsorption capacity and catalytic degradation potential were evaluated for the removal of BPA and p -CP from solutions. The results showed that the adsorption took only 1 h to reach equilibrium and HCNTs/Fe 3 O 4 had maximum adsorption capacities of 113 mg g −1 for BPA and 41.6 mg g −1 for p -CP at 303 K, respectively. The adsorption of BPA fitted well using the Langmuir, Temkin and Freundlich models while the adsorption of p -CP fitted well using the Freundlich and Temkin models. BPA adsorption on HCNTs/Fe 3 O 4 was dominated by π-π stacking and hydrogen bonding forces. The adsorption included both the mono-molecular layer adsorption on the adsorbent surface and the multi-molecular layer adsorption on the non-uniform surface. The adsorption of p -CP on HCNTs/Fe 3 O 4 was a multi-molecular layer adsorption on a dissimilar surface. The adsorption was controlled by forces such as π-π stacking, hydrogen bonding, partition effect and molecular sieve effect. Moreover, KPS was added to the adsorption system to initiate a heterogeneous Fenton-like catalytic degradation. Over a wide pH range (4–10), 90% of the aqueous BPA solution and 88% of the p -CP solution were degraded in 3 and 2 h, respectively. After three adsorption-regeneration or degradation cycles, the removal of BPA and p -CP remained up to 88% and 66%, indicating that HCNTs/Fe 3 O 4 composite is cost-effective, stable and highly efficient to remove BPA and p -CP from solution.

In this study, a novel γ-Fe 2 O 3 /biochar (BF γ ) composite by a plant in-situ enrichment and one-step pyrolysis strategy was prepared, which was applied as a photocatalyst to activate peroxymonosulfate (PMS) for the degradation of p-chlorophenol (4-CP) under visible light irradiation (BF γ /PMS/Vis) system. The characterization results exhibited that γ-Fe 2 O 3 with localized carbon doping was evenly embedded in biochar during the pyrolysis. BF γ exhibited better photoresponse properties than biochar (BC) and γ-Fe 2 O 3 . The removal efficiency of this system for 4-CP reached 96.41% under optimal conditions. This system showed high removal efficiency with a wide pH range (3.0–13.0) and under conditions of different organic pollutants . It also showed strong resistance to interference with co-existing inorganic ions and humic acid (HA). Electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) and radical scavenging experiments revealed that the reactive oxygen species (ROS) in this system included SO 4 - ·, ·OH, ·O 2 - and 1 O 2 . The density functional theoretical (DFT) calculations further revealed the promotion of localized carbon doping in γ-Fe 2 O 3 on electron transfer and photoresponse, including C-O bond (d=1.29 Å), C-Fe bond (d=1.80 Å) and band gap value (E gap < 0.72 eV). This study provides new insights into constructing environmentally-friendly catalysts and the possibility of the solid waste recycling for other wetland plants.

This study employed a self-designed underwater arc discharge (UAD) plasma reactor, which combined advanced oxidation process (Fe 2 O 3 -CoFe 2 O 4 /PMS) and low-temperature plasma technology to efficiently degrade refractory organic pollutants (i.e. phenol, p-chlorophenol, p-nitrochlorobenzene). The results illustrated that the plasma/PMS/Fe 2 O 3 -CoFe 2 O 4 system possessed high degradation efficiency and TOC removal rate towards three target pollutants (phenol: 99.8%, 96.12%; 4-CP: 98.4%, 86.48%; p-NCB: 99.9%, 88.31%). With the help of in-situ variable temperature EPR and Indigo colorimetry method, ·OH, SO 4 ·- , O 2 ·- , 1 O 2 and O 3 were identified as the main reactive oxygen species (ROS) for the degradation of target pollutants, revealing the synergistic catalytic mechanism between plasma and Fe 2 O 3 -CoFe 2 O 4 for PMS activation and inferring the degradation pathways of target pollutants. The results confirmed that the plasma/PMS/Fe 2 O 3 -CoFe 2 O 4 system was feasible for the degradation of refractory organic pollutants, has the advantages of high efficiency and low energy consumption, and could provide an effective strategy for the treatment of refractory organic pollutants in groundwater/soil.

The degradation of phenol in Cl−-rich water by Fe(VI) was investigated using both chromatographic methods (HPLC and IC) and an on-line direct mass spectrometry (MS) analysis technique. Participation of Cl− during phenol degradation was observed through the formation of p-chlorophenol and coupled species with phenol. Though only a small concentration of Cl− was involved in the reaction, the presence of Cl− could affect the behavior of phenol substantially. With the increase of the Cl− concentration, generation of p-benzoquinone and p-chlorophenol was increased. Meanwhile, phenol in the bulk solution displayed a sharp decline followed by a gradual increase. The developed on-line MS analysis facilitated real-time monitoring of phenol changes in the reaction system. The results showed that phenol degradation by Fe(VI) with the presence of a high concentration of Cl− followed a second-order reaction process. The degradation pathway of phenol was also identified, with p-chlorophenol, p-benzoquinone, maleic acid and formic acid as the main byproducts.

Peroxymonosulfate (PMS) oxidation reactions have been extensively studied recently. Due to the high material cost and low catalytic capability, PMS oxidation technology cannot be effectively applied in an industrial water treatment process. In this work, we developed a modification strategy based on enhancing the neglected electron tunneling effect to optimize the intrinsic electron transport process of the catalyst. The 2D nitrogen-doped carbon-based nanosheets with small interlayer spacing were prepared by self-polymerization of dopamine hydrochloride inserted into the natural layered bentonite template. Systematic characterizations confirmed that the smaller layer spacing in the 2D nitride-doped carbon-based nanosheets reduces the depletion layer width. The weak electronic shielding effect derived by the small layer spacing on the material subsurface enhanced the bulk electron tunneling effect. More bulk electrons could be migrated to the catalyst surface to activate PMS molecules. The PMS activation system showed ultrafast oxidation capability to degrade organic pollutants and strong ability to resist interference from environmental matrixes due to the optimized electron transfer process. Furthermore, the developed membrane reactor exhibited strong catalytic stability during the continuous degradation of P-Chlorophenol (CP).

Recently, solar-driven seawater desalination based on air-water interfacial heating has triggered significant research interest due to its high water evaporation rate, high photothermal conversion efficiency, low energy consumption, simple operation and low cost. However, as the air-water interface temperature reaches as high as 40–70 °C, volatile organic compounds (VOCs) will volatilize into the condensed desalinated water and results in the polluted freshwater. In this work, anionic, cationic, and nonionic surfactants were applied for the first time to inhibit the phenolic compounds such as phenol, p -methylphenol and p -chlorophenol entering into the condensed freshwater. Results showed that the concentration of phenol could be reduced by the addition of cetyl trimethyl ammonium bromide (CTAB). The phenol's distillation concentration ratio (R D ) reduced from 76% to 35% due to the electrostatic interaction and the micellar encapsulation between the CTAB and phenol. Moreover, parameters including CTAB dose, initial phenol concentration, solar intensity, pH, and salinity that affecting the R D were also investigated. Finally, a real seawater solar-driven distillation experiment also revealed that the water quality of freshwater was improved by the addition of CTAB. This work revealed that the surfactants such as CTAB can be potentially used to inhibit VOCs entering into the condensed freshwater during solar-driven seawater distillation.

The efficiency of peroxymonosulfate (PMS)-based advanced oxidation processes for eliminating persistent organic pollutants is significantly limited by high residual contaminant levels and complex aqueous matrices. Developing robust and environmentally benign catalysts that can activate PMS while resisting matrix interference is therefore critical for practical wastewater treatment. Herein, we present a porous Co Mn bimetallic oxide (p-Co 1.2 Mn 1.8 O 4 ) integrating dual-metal active sites with mesoporous nanoconfinement, which simultaneously enhances PMS adsorption energy and enriches interfacial pollutant concentration. A direct electron transfer process (ETP) was enabled between the tetracycline (TC) pollutant (as an electron donor) and surface-bound PMS complexes (PMS ⁎ , as an electron acceptor) on p-Co 1.2 Mn 1.8 O 4 . This synergy enables a novelty nonradical electron-transfer pathway (ETP) between tetracycline (electron donor) and surface-bound PMS complexes (PMS ⁎ , electron acceptor), achieved nearly 100 % removal of TC within 15 min and increasing the pseudo-first-order constant from 0.121 to 0.348 min −1 over the non-porous sample. The p-Co 1.2 Mn 1.8 O 4 /PMS system also efficiently degrades binary pollutants and maintains high activity under varied pH, temperature, and complex matrices. This work provides mechanistic insights into how multi-scale structural synergy—at both atomic and nanoscale levels—in bimetallic oxide catalysts regulates PMS activation, offering a promising platform for practical water purification.

Nitrate photolysis under UV222 irradiation has increasingly attracted attention as an advanced oxidation process, while fundamental mechanisms remain incompletely understood in various water matrices. This study revealed that the observed nitrate photodecay under UV222 represented a dynamic balance between innate photolysis and significant reformation, with the innate quantum yield (0.52 mol·Ein −1 ) substantially 7.1–11.0 times higher than the observed quantum yield (0.047–0.073 mol·Ein −1 ). Inorganic carbon (IC) and organic carbon (OC), ubiquitous water matrix components, influenced UV222/nitrate through distinctly different mechanisms: IC suppressed nitrate photodecay 12.6–58.3 % via enhancing ONOO⁻-mediated nitrate reformation without affecting innate photolysis, while OC promoted observed nitrate photodecay 19.6–54.5 % by scavenging reactive intermediates involved in nitrate reformation. UV222/nitrate effectively degraded various micropollutants via direct photolysis (e.g., N-nitrosodimethylamine), • OH oxidation (e.g., carbamazepine), and a combination of pathways including reactive nitrogen species (RNSs) oxidation (e.g., sulfamethoxazole). IC selectively promoted RNSs oxidation while suppressing • OH oxidation pathway, leading to selective effects for various micropollutant degradation and the increased nitration byproducts formation. In contrast, OC uniformly reduced all oxidation pathways through non-selective scavenging of reactive species. This mechanistic understanding explained the complex effects of water matrix components on UV/nitrate performance and provides a fundamental basis for optimizing UV222 driven advanced oxidation processes for micropollutant control in diverse water conditions.

Nonradicals relying on peroxymonosulfate (PMS) activation face inherent kinetic and thermodynamic limitations in pollutant mineralization. This is overcome using asymmetric iron single-atom catalysts (Fe-SACs) with Sabatier-adjusted d -band centers that establish a synergistic nonradical network of pathways, achieving exceptional mineralization (≈85%) with only one-tenth conventional PMS dosage. Direct coordination of high-loading Fe (≈10 wt.%) with controllable p -block elements (S, P, B) simultaneously facilitates electron-transfer pathways and selective generation of nonradicals ( 1 O 2 , Fe IV = O). Compared to symmetric Fe 1 -N 4 , they enhance pollutant removal and mineralization by 4.2-fold and 6.3-fold, respectively. Atomic-resolution characterization and theory reveal that the dopant's electronegativity governs the electronic perturbations of the Fe center, dictating PMS adsorption. Pollutant-specific charge transfer and adsorption affinity critically determine nonradical activity. The asymmetric Fe SACs exhibit excellent stability and applicability in complex matrices and continuous-flow wastewater treatment. This work provides a transformative strategy to overcome fundamental limitations in advanced oxidation processes and a design framework for sustainable environmental technologies.

Sodium pentachlorophenol (PCP-Na) is an organic chloride compound which is highly toxic and difficult to degrade, widely distributed in various environments, and the accurate on-site detection of PCP-Na is important for environmental monitoring and pollution control. This article proposed a fiber-optic surface plasmon resonance (SPR) sensor based on conjugated microporous polymers for detection of PCP-Na. Conjugated microporous polymer material YH-1-135 with amino functional groups on the surface was synthesized by solvothermal method and modified on the surface of fiber-optic SPR sensor. Which utilized the electrostatic force between amino groups and PCP-Na molecules to achieve specific detection of PCP-Na, with a detection limit as low as 1.31 pg/mL and a detection time of 180 s. Compared with existing detection methods, this method has significant advantages in detection range, detection limit, and detection time. This study can be used for the rapid on-site detection of PCP-Na, and also offers new ideas for the application of fiber-optic SPR sensor in environmental pollutant detection.

The design of multifunctional catalysts for peroxymonosulfate (PMS) activation is crucial for advanced oxidation processes. Herein, we synthesized cobalt-doped sodium titanate nanosheets (Co-doped TNS) with enriched oxygen vacancies to activate PMS for 4-chlorophenol (4-CP) decomposition. Incorporating cobalt ions into the TiO 6 crystal lattice enhanced structural stability, preventing cobalt leaching after the reaction. Oxygen vacancies, generated through calcination under a reducing atmosphere, facilitated electron transfer and promoted the formation of active species. The intrinsic magnetism imparted by cobalt doping enabled efficient catalyst recovery using an external magnet. The optimized Co-doped TNS exhibited exceptional PMS activation performance, achieving nearly 100 % 4-CP removal within 60 min (k = 0.065 min⁻¹). Critically, high degradation efficiency (>90 %) was sustained even in the presence of commonplace ions and across diverse water matrices, with the catalyst demonstrating broad pH adaptability from acidic to alkaline conditions. Quenching experiments, along with electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectra, indicated that sulfate radicals (SO 4 •- ) were the main oxidants, with notable support from superoxide radicals (•O 2 - ), hydroxyl radicals (•OH), and singlet oxygen ( 1 O 2 ). Furthermore, density functional theory (DFT) calculations validated the enhanced adsorption of PMS on the Ti-Co center and the oxygen vacancy site in Co-doped TNS, as well as the augmented electron transfer from Co-doped TNS to the PMS molecule. This work presents a novel multifunctional catalyst design strategy that effectively integrates high catalytic activity, structural stability, and practical magnetic recoverability for efficient and sustainable water purification.
