Nitrogen-doped porous carbon plates have been prepared by simple and cost-effective pyrolysis carbonization of an easily available biomass-fallen camellia flower and followed by alkali activation. As-prepared nitrogen-doped porous carbon (aNPCP3) possesses a high specific surface area of 2318 m 2 g −1 and abundant micro/meso-pores. As a result, the aNPCP3 samples have been demonstrated to be electrodes for supercapacitors, displaying a high specific capacitance of 354 F g −1 at a current density of 0.2 A g −1 and excellent cycling stability. Further, the aNPCP3 samples used as sulfur host materials for lithium-sulfur batteries exhibit a high capacity of 1210 mAh g −1 and good cycling stability with a small capacity decay of about 0.1 % per cycle. Interestingly, it is found that their electrochemical performances are dependent on their specific surface area, pore structure, and heteroatom-doping content and type of carbon materials to a large extent. Cheapness, convenient resource, and good performance make these electrode materials displaying huge potential in cost-effective high-performance energy storage devices.

Graphical An integrated carbonization, activation, and nitrogen-doped process is applied to fabricate hierarchical porous carbon materials with controllable N content as electrode for supercapacitors. The symmetric supercapacitor delivers an energy density of 13.3 W h kg −1 (6 KOH) and 20 W h kg −1 (1 M Na 2 SO 4 ). Biomass-derived carbon materials are an amazing electrode material for supercapacitor, owing to their abundant, porous structure and composition. Herein, a controllable N content carbon material with hierarchical porous structure was fabricated via an integrated carbonization, activation and nitrogen-doping process. N-rich camellia pollen is used as carbon precursor, while NH 4 Cl is employed as both activation agent and dopant. The optimal N-doped carbon with higher N content (3.82 at%), suitable pore size distribution and larger specific surface area (810 m 2 g −1 ), provides abundant ion transport channels and exposes more accessible active sites. Thus, a high specific capacitance of 280 F g −1 (1 A g −1 ) in 6 M KOH (three-electrode system) can be obtained with making full use of N−HPC-1. Moreover, the assembled symmetrical supercapacitor delivers high energy densities both in 6 M KOH (13.3 Wh kg −1 ) and 1 M Na 2 SO 4 (20 Wh kg −1 ) that can be used for LED lighting. More than that, it is also demonstrates excellent cycle stability in 6 M KOH (85.4% after 20000 cycles at 20 A g −1 ). In view of the above-mentioned merits, this N-doped hierarchical porous carbon is anticipated to be a promising material for application in supercapacitors and other fields.

Photocatalysis is one of the most promising ways to realize artificial photosynthesis. The biologically inspired photocatalysts with 3D flower-like structures have attracted much attention. In this study, an effective method for the synthesis of composite photocatalytic material, NH 4 TiOF 3 /TiO 2 /g-C 3 N 4 , with a 3D camellia-like structure, was developed. The 3D hierarchical structure of the composite material enabled multiple refractions and reflections of light within the catalyst, which greatly improved the efficiency of the sunlight harvesting. The combination of NH 4 TiOF 3 and TiO 2 also effectively reduced the electron-hole recombination in the g-C 3 N 4 . To evaluate its photocatalytic performance, the prepared nanostructured composite materials were tested for the water-splitting with simulated sunlight. It showed the hydrogen evolution at the rate of 3.6 mmol/g/h, which is 4.0 times faster than that from the pure g-C 3 N 4 . The composite materials exhibited excellent cycling stability. The detailed mechanism of the Z-scheme heterojunction was also discussed. The proposed synthesis route for the creation of 3D flower-like hierarchical composites provides a new effective technique for developing efficient, active, and stable composite photocatalysts for hydrogen production.

In bioanalysis and environmental monitoring, developing sustainable carbon dot nanomaterials from waste biomass as probes holds significant scientific value for advancing sustainable chemical sensing technology. The method not only enables the efficient transformation of waste biomass into functional nanomaterials but also presents a sustainable paradigm for biomass resource utilization. A one-step hydrothermal synthesis protocol was utilized for the fabrication of nitrogen self-doped carbon dots (NCDs), wherein camellia flowers functioned as dual sources of carbon and nitrogen. Furthermore, we constructed a novel chemiluminescence system (Na 2 SO 3 -CeS 2 O 8 -NCDs-H 2 SO 4 ) and applied it to the highly sensitive detection of the antiepileptic drug lamotrigine (LTG) in water. The chemiluminescence signal of LTG exhibited a concentration-dependent inhibitory effect within the system, featuring a linear dynamic range of 8 × 10 -5 M to 1 × 10 -3 M and a detection limit of 2.37 μM. The recovery rates of the target analyte in spiked real water samples ranged from 98.63% to 104.49%, validating the applicability and reliability of this method for detecting LTG in complex environmental matrices. The research offered an innovative approach to the resource utilization of waste biomass and the green analysis of trace drug residues in water samples.
