Development of direct formic acid fuel cell (DFAFC) is significantly constrained by low output performance and poor durability because of the sluggish formic acid oxidation reaction (FAOR) and the poisoning by CO ads intermediate on the Pt-based electrocatalyst at low operating temperatures. By operating DFAFCs at elevated temperatures, the peak power density (PPD) of the cell based on the Pt/C catalyst increases significantly. For example, the PPD of DFAFC reaches 198 mW cm −2 at 240 °C, eight times higher than that of the DFAFC at 70 °C. The study shows the surprising transition in power performance of DFAFCs at elevated temperatures. The increase of PPD for DFAFC against temperature is 121 mW cm −2 /100 °C at temperatures above 115 °C, almost three times higher than the 45 mW cm −2 /100 °C obtained at lower temperatures. The fundamental reason for the substantially enhanced power output and durability is the gradual transformation of the reaction kinetics from sluggish direct FAOR at low temperatures to fast H 2 oxidation reaction at elevated temperatures due to the increased in situ decomposition of formic acid on Pt/C catalysts at temperatures above 100 °C. This study demonstrates that operation at temperatures above 160 °C is most effective to promote performance and durability of DFAFCs.

The redox-active mediators play pivotal roles in the reactions of the gas-liquid interface and solid-liquid interface of alkaline mediated fuel cells (MedFCs). In this study, Alizarin (Az) is selected to serve as the mediator of alkaline MedFC because of its remarkable reversibility and low permeability. The rapid charge transfer properties and decent alkali stability of Az in alkaline MedFC demonstrate a 1.06 V theoretical open-circuit voltage and a 169.55 mW cm −2 maximum peak power density at 25 °C. Density functional theory calculations and stability analysis reveal an alkali-proof trait of Az due to its uniform charge distribution . Additionally, the alkaline MedFC with 0.2 mol L −1 Az is steadily performed for over 200 h at a discharge current density of 25 mA cm −2 . The utilization of an efficient mediator into a MedFC fundamentally accomplishes the restructuring in its chemistry process.

The glucose fuel cells (GFCs) leverage the implant surface as an electrode, representing an optimal approach for miniaturizing implantable power sources. A conductive hydrogel electrode membrane is crafted through in situ reduction and electrochemical co-deposition techniques by employing bacterial cellulose as a scaffold. This process enables the seamless integration of the GFC directly onto the implant surface. The integrated GFC exhibits an impressive open-circuit voltage peak of 0.894 V and a peak power density of 94.7 μW cm −2 . Additionally, the fuel cell demonstrates resistance to chloride ion toxicity under simulated interstitial fluid conditions. Although performance within horse serum is moderate, the methodology presents a viable strategy for developing GFCs on implant surfaces.

Methanol is a volatile fuel which can be fed into microfluidic fuel cells in vaporized form. However, the methanol oxidation reaction is relatively sluggish compared with the hydrogen oxidation reaction . Therefore, a novel dual fuel microfluidic fuel cell system powered by both methanol and methanol-derived hydrogen via photocatalysis is developed, which can achieve much improved cell performance while eliminating the hydrogen transportation , storage and safety issues. Pt/P25 is adopted as the photocatalyst which photo-reforms the methanol to hydrogen in the fuel tank. The intermediate during the photoreforming process can also be fed into the microfluidic fuel cell as a fuel. Different cell performance can be achieved by varying the fuel-water mix ratios in the tank. By optimizing the ratio, the peak power density can be increased by more than 10 times when the system is exposed to simulated solar light (3 suns) illumination.

Triboelectric nanogenerators (TENGs) are a promising green energy technology with enormous potential applications. However, compared to commercial power devices, TENGs face two major challenges in maintaining constant operation of electronic devices: low current outputs and intermittent outputs influenced by external mechanical triggers. In this study, according to the output charge accumulation of the switch strategy, we designed a custom power management circuit (MC) tailored to the low and intermittent output of the TENG, with the aim of achieving exceptionally high and stable output. In ultrahigh output mode, the TENG-MC system can generate a pulsed current of up to 9.8 A and a peak power of up to 325 kW (P = I2R), resulting in a peak pulsed power density of 31.0 MW m−2, by precisely adjusting the capacitance and breakdown potential. The system can achieve a maximum current of up to 81.2 A with a peak current density of 7.7 kA m−2, setting a remarkable record for TENGs. In the long-lasting mode, the TENG-MC system exhibits high stability, maintaining a constant voltage of 1.7 kV with a crest factor of up to 1.005. Remarkably, just 2.5 minutes of operation of the TENG-MC system can efficiently power 464 LEDs continuously for 13 minutes, maintaining constant illumination without flickering. Finally, to demonstrate the application potential of the TENG-MC system, we have designed two experiments: a self-powered cathodic protection system that shows remarkable stability (providing 8 hours of protection after only 2.5 minutes of energy harvesting) and pest prevention that achieves nearly 100% mortality. These advances significantly increase the commercial viability of TENG technology and address the issues of low/unstable power output, particularly when harvesting irregular and discontinuous mechanical energy over long periods of time.

The porosity and pore structure of anode support plays an important role in fuel gas diffusion of protonic ceramic fuel cells (PCFCs). In this study, the PCFC with Ni-BaZr 0.1 Ce 0.7 Y 0.1 Yb 0.1 O 3-δ (BZCYYb) anode substrate with finger-like straight pore and reasonable flexural strength was successfully prepared by a one-step phase inversion tape casting , spin coating and co-firing technologies. The peak power density of single cell reaches 0.77 W cm -2 at 700 °C using 3 % H 2 O humidified hydrogen as the fuel, which is significantly higher than the single cell prepared by typical dry-pressing method. It is found that the improvement is attributed to the optimization of anode mass transfer process with open-straight hole according to the relaxation time distribution (DRT) analysis of polarization resistance . Meanwhile, the single cell prepared by one-step phase inversion tape casting shows no significant degradation after a 100 h stability test at 650 °C or short thermal-cycling test. The results indicate that the fabrication of straight hole via phase inversion tape casting is an effective way to facilitate the transfer of fuel gas and eliminate the concentration polarization loss.

A new symmetric SOFC with an SDC framework and a silver-infiltrated electrocatalyst is presented for the first time in this paper. A three-electrode polarization test shows that the Ag–SDC has a low area specific resistance of 1.07 Ω cm 2 at 600 °C, a low activation energy of 85 kJ mol −1 and high exchange current densities of 428.2 and 129.0 mA cm −2 at 750 and 650 °C, respectively, when it is used as an oxygen reduction electrode. It also exhibits low polarization resistance in a humidified hydrogen atmosphere. A symmetric single cell is used in real fuel cell conditions to deliver peak power densities of 200 and 84 mW cm −2 at 750 and 650 °C, respectively, when humidified hydrogen is used as a fuel and ambient air is used as the cathode atmosphere. The cell still reaches a peak power density of 81 mW cm −2 at 750 °C when operating on CO. O 2 -TPO analysis demonstrates that the Ag–SDC electrode has even better coking resistance than the pure SDC scaffold. The results indicate that Ag–SDC|SDC|Ag–SDC symmetric cells with an infiltrated silver electrocatalyst are a promising new type of fuel cell for use with both hydrogen fuel and carbon-containing fuels.

To achieve high-performance anion exchange membranes (AEMs) with superior conductivity and stability, a series of novel poly(biphenyl piperidinium) (PBP-n-Pip) membranes are synthesized by tethering cationic groups to the backbone utilizing flexible hydrophobic alkyl spacers with various lengths. All of the membranes exhibit excellent film-forming ability and tensile strength (42.34–53.49 MPa). Well-defined microphase separation is confirmed by transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and atomic force microscopy (AFM). The PBP-6-Pip membrane exhibits the conductivity of 117.1 mS cm −1 at 80 °C due to the most excellent microphase-separated morphology and highest water uptake. The long-term alkali resistance of AEMs can be improved by extending the length of the flexible alkyl chains appropriately. After immersion in 2 M NaOH at 80 °C for 1500 h, the initial conductivity of PBP-6-Pip with intermediate spacer chains and PBP-8-Pip with longer spacer chains both remains above 84%. Furthermore, the PBP-6-Pip membrane with the highest conductivity achieves a peak power density of 307 mW cm −2 at 80 °C in the H 2 /O 2 single fuel cell. A long-term life test of this MEA shows a voltage decay rate of 2.87 mV/h over 40 h of operation under 0.2 A cm −2 at 60 °C.

The introduction of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) into polybenzimidazole (PBI) as high temperature proton exchange membranes has attracted extensive attention. In this work, nitrogen-rich carbonized MOFs derived from UIO-66-NH2 were synthesized, exhibiting superior chemical stability under concentrated phosphoric acid (PA) and high-temperature conditions compared to conventional MOFs. The composite membranes were prepared by introducing these nitrogen-rich carbonized MOFs into PBI for the first time. Remarkably, the carbonized MOFs demonstrated a triple synergistic proton-conduction mechanism: retained porous architecture as proton-conducting channels; nitrogen-rich sites enabling proton hopping through acid-base pairs; and self-driven proton conduction via in situ-generated zirconium phosphate. Notably, even at lower levels of PA doping, the proton conductivity reached 0.079 S cm-1, surpassing that of both porous carbon-based and zirconia-based composite membranes. Furthermore, the interaction between PBI and the carbonized MOFs substantially enhanced the mechanical properties of the composite membrane, with the elongation at break increasing more than 8 times relative to these composites. These conductivity and mechanical enhancements contributed to achieving a peak power density of 952 mW cm-2, which, to the best of our knowledge, represents the highest reported value for PA doped inorganic/polymer-based high-temperature proton exchange membrane fuel cells (HT-PEMFCs). This work highlights the potential of nitrogen-rich carbonized MOF-based composite membranes for high-power-density and long-term stable HT-PEM applications.

The introduction of catalyst on anode of solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) has been an effective way to alleviate the carbon deposition when utilizing biogas as the fuel. A series of La 0.6 Sr 0.4 Co 1-x Ni x O 3-δ (x = 0, 0.2, 0.4, 0.6, 0.8) oxides are synthesized by sol-gel method and used as catalysts precursors for biogas dry reforming . The phase structure of La 0.6 Sr 0.4 Co 1-x Ni x O 3-δ oxides before and after reduction are characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD). The texture properties, carbon deposition, CH 4 and CO 2 conversion rate of La 0.6 Sr 0.4 Co 1-x Ni x O 3-δ catalysts are evaluated and compared. The peak power density of 739 mW cm −2 is obtained by a commercial SOFC with La 0.6 Sr 0.4 Co 0.4 Ni 0.6 O 3-δ catalyst at 850 °C when using a mixture of CH 4 : CO 2 = 2:1 as fuel. This shows a great improvement from the cell without catalyst for internal dry reforming, which is attributed to the formation of NiCo alloy active species after reduction in H 2 atmosphere. The results indicate the benefits of inhibiting the carbon deposition on Ni-based anode through introducing the La 0.6 Sr 0.4 Co 0.4 Ni 0.6 O 3-δ catalyst precursor. Additionally, the dry reforming technology will also help to convert part of the exhaust heat into chemical energy and improve the efficiency of SOFC system with biogas fuel.

Microporous layers play a crucial role as one of the main components of the membrane electrode assembly (MEA) in facilitating effective water management for proton exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs), which is vital for maintaining optimal performance in a wide humidity range . Herein, Zn-based zeolitic imidazolate framework-8 (ZIF-8)-derived material (ZDM) as a porous carbon material is first developed to construct the microporous layer (MPL). With higher gas permeability , improved water management, and increased electrical conductivity , the MPL equipped with a ZDM layer, denoted as MPL-Z, exhibits superior performance, surpassing commercial MPLs throughout the range of 30–100% relative humidity (RH). The peak power density of an H 2 /air PEMFC at 70% RH utilizing a MPL-Z is 3.3 times that of commercial MPL. Furthermore, a unique patterned dual MPL is designed to boost the performance, ultimately achieving a peak power density of 1.50 W cm −2 (H 2 /air) with a low total Pt loading of 0.3 mg Pt cm −2 at 100 % RH. Even at only 30% RH, the peak power density can reach 0.72 W cm −2 (H 2 /air). The results demonstrate that the material and structural design of the MPL allows for the efficient operation of low Pt loading PEMFCs over a wide humidity range.

In this study, xBaZr 0.1 Ce 0.7 Y 0.2 O 3-δ (BZCY)-PrO 2 (where x represents the ratio of BZCY to PrO 2 , x = 20, 10, 5) composite powders were synthesized via an in-situ exsolution method. These powders were then mixed with La 0.8 Sr 0.2 Co 0.2 Fe 0.8 O 3-δ (LSCF) to fabricate LSCF-xBZCY-PrO 2 nanocomposite cathodes for protonic ceramic fuel cells (PCFCs). Consequently, the cathode with x = 10 demonstrated the optimal electrochemical performance, achieving a low polarization resistance ( R p) of 0.268 Ω cm 2 and a peak power density (PPD) of 0.52 W cm −2 at 650 °C, outperforming both the LSCF-20BZCY-PrO 2 and LSCF-5BZCY-PrO 2 cathodes. These values represent a significant improvement compared to conventional LSCF-BZCY cathodes ( R p = 0.506 Ω cm 2 , PPD = 0.338 W cm −2 ). Furthermore, the LSCF-10BZCY-PrO 2 cathode demonstrated excellent short-term stability under working conditions and operated continuously for 100 h. XPS, EIS, and DRT analyses revealed that the enhanced performance is primarily attributed to the improved oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) kinetics, facilitated by the incorporation of PrO 2 elements and the formation of a nanostructured morphology. This work presents a simplified and effective strategy for developing high performance nanocomposite multiphase cathodes for PCFCs, offering valuable insights into their practical application.
