The structural-functional integrated device optimizes the synergy between mechanical strength and functionality through advanced material design, offering broad application potential. In this work, a novel structural-functional integrated device designed to address the challenge of stress monitoring in fiber-reinforced composites is presented. By incorporating potassium sodium niobate piezoelectric material into carbon fiber-reinforced polymer composites, a load-bearing and piezoelectric integrated device is successfully developed. The device exhibits outstanding flexural strength of 377.7 MPa and a flexural modulus of 18.8 GPa, making it suitable for use as a structural material. Simultaneously, the device possesses intrinsic piezoelectric properties and can function as a mechanical sensor, demonstrating a linear voltage output over an exceptionally wide pressure range from 10 to 3.8 × 10⁴ N, which enables the monitoring of mechanical stress in the device. Through a carefully designed pattern of carbon fiber fabric, the device can also intelligently identify the location and magnitude of the applied pressure. This research achieves the integration of high mechanical strength and stress sensing functionality through material design, opening new avenues for the development and application of smart composite materials.

Assessment of the local strain/stress changes of adhesives is highly desirable for their service to avoid premature failure. However, monitoring local strain/stress variations in adhesives in practical settings remains challenging, especially in aqueous media. Here, an underwater structurally-colored adhesive for visualized local strain/stress monitoring in aqueous media is reported. The structurally-colored adhesive is obtained by shearing composites of poly(butyl acrylate- co -acrylic acid) copolymer and carboxylated polystyrene colloidal particles. The resultant structurally-colored adhesive exhibits underwater adhesive strength (i.e., 238 kPa for stainless steel substrates) to various substrates (e.g., metals and plastics) thanks to hydrophobic segments and carboxyl groups. Notably, they can shift color in response to external force, enabling real-time visual monitoring of localized strain/stress changes. As a proof of concept, the structurally-colored adhesive can be used to seal a leaking hole on a bottle or tube, and it can precisely visualize the localized pressure distribution, providing critical information on the adhesion performance and the local pressure. These distinctive properties make the structurally-colored adhesive suitable for application in wet environments as a real-time visual pressure tracking device.

Flexible wearable electronic devices function as pivotal interfaces for environmental interaction, yet their widespread application encounters formidable bottlenecks due to limited energy supply and multifunctionality. Herein, the piezo-ionic effect has been innovatively applied to polyacrylamide (PAM)/polyvinylidene fluoride UiO-66 MOF(PPM) composite membranes for multifunctional sensing in stress monitoring and optical response, as well as dendrite-free flexible zinc-ion batteries. Exploiting the piezoelectric-induced piezo-ionic effect, the sensor achieves remarkable performance with ultra-fast response/recovery times (10 ms/18 ms) and an impressive maximum electrical output of 23.64 μA. The high-performance sensing mechanism has been confirmed through finite element simulations. Furthermore, the polarized electric field of the fiber instigates ion deposition, enabling the composite membrane to be utilized in zinc-ion batteries for the first time, effectively inhibiting zinc dendrite formation. Consequently, the flexible battery exhibits a symmetrical cycle of up to 2000 h and maintains a stable high capacity of 150 mAhg −1 . Additionally, the multifunctional sensing system constructed with composite membrane is applied to monitor light responses, facial expressions, and motion, while also providing intelligent guidance for multi-scene-target accuracy exercises with an accuracy exceeding 94 %. The composite membrane stands as a promising material with substantial potential to propel significant advancements in the development of flexible electronic devices.

Mechanoluminescent (ML) materials, with their self-powered and real-time response characteristics, have demonstrated significant potential in structural health monitoring. However, limitations such as narrow spectral width and insufficient quantitative analysis capability still restrict their practical applications. This work presents an Eu-doped Ca 3 (PO 4 ) 2 /Ca 5 (PO 4 ) 3 OH (CPO/CPOH) heterostructured ML material. By synergistically optimizing interfacial electron behavior and phase composition, this heterostructure design increases ML intensity by 230 % compared to single-phase materials. Notably, an interface-induced Eu 3 + →Eu 2+ self-reduction phenomenon is first observed . Introducing a reducing atmosphere , ML intensity is further amplified by 10.7 times, and full-spectrum ML emission with a full width at half maximum (FWHM) of 170 nm is successfully realized. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations confirm that the oxygen-bridge-connected interface structure exhibits thermodynamic stability, and directional electron transfer from CPO to CPOH reduces the system band gap (2.73 eV), providing an efficient pathway for carrier migration. Combined with thermoluminescence analysis, cycling stability, and interfacial electric field correlation, the ML mechanism is clarified as an interfacial electric field-driven carrier detrapping process. Furthermore, by integrating digital image correlation (DIC) technology with Lagrange transformation, this material successfully visualizes and enables quasi-quantitative analysis of stress concentration regions (0.05 - 1.16 MPa) in bridge structures, validating compressive performance differences among T-beam bridges, cylindrical bridges, and arch bridges. This study not only provides a novel heterostructure ML system and regulating spectral properties but also establishes a reliable visual quasi - quantitative analysis platform for real-time health monitoring of large-scale structures.
