Fast-charging, non-aqueous lithium-based batteries are desired for practical applications. In this regard, LiMn 2 O 4 is considered an appealing positive electrode active material because of its favourable ionic diffusivity due to the presence of three-dimensional Li-ion diffusion channels. However, LiMn 2 O 4 exhibits inadequate rate capabilities and rapid structural degradation at high currents. To circumvent these issues, here we introduce quintuple low-valence cations to increase the entropy of LiMn 2 O 4 . As a result, the entropy-increased LiMn 2 O 4 -based material, i.e., LiMn 1.9 Cu 0.02 Mg 0.02 Fe 0.02 Zn 0.02 Ni 0.02 O 4 , when tested in non-aqueous lithium metal coin cell configuration, enable 1000 cell cycles at 1.48 A g −1 (corresponding to a cell charging time of 4 minutes) and 25°C with a discharge capacity retention of about 80%. We demonstrate that the increased entropy in LiMn 2 O 4 leads to an increase in the disordering of dopant cations and a contracted local structure, where the enlarged LiO 4 space and enhanced Mn-O covalency improve the Li-ion transport and stabilize the diffusion channels. We also prove that stress caused by cycling at a high cell state of charge is relieved through elastic deformation via a solid-solution transition, thus avoiding structural degradation upon prolonged cycling.

The search for advanced electrode materials to solve slow ion diffusion and poor conductivity issues has spurred the development of fast-charging sodium-ion batteries (SIBs). Herein, a 2D metallic anode, KCu 4 S 3 , is reported expertly crafted using a KSCN molten salt approach, laying the foundation for fast-charging SIBs. It is found that the mixed metal-valence states within this compound provide substantial advantages, particularly in enhancing the high-rate capability and ensuring long-term durability. The mechanism that appears to facilitate these benefits can be traced to the formation of NaCu 2 S 2 intermediate, which assist in electron transfer during Na + (de)intercalation. In situ observations confirm the sodiation products of NaCu 2 S 2 and sodium polysulfide can recover to the original phase upon desodiation. Such distinctive characteristics endow KCu 4 S 3 with remarkable electrochemical performances, including an impressive capacity of 355 mAh g −1 at 20 A g −1 and 100% capacity retention within 3000 cycles. Moreover, the full cell exhibits a high energy density of 332 Wh kg −1 and retains 92% of its capacity across 150 cycles at 1 A g −1 . This work opens new horizons in the field of fast-charging materials, making a significant step forward in shaping the future of SIBs.

Recent studies in all-solid-state batteries (ASSBs) based on inorganic solid electrolytes (ISEs) have improved the energy density to a higher level. However, its commercialization is still delayed by many intrinsic limitations, among which the fast-charging capability is not mentioned enough. Despite few elaborately selected electrolytes coupled with electrodes that can deliver an extremely high rate, the rate improvement strategy is still lacking. Here, a novel and effective strategy of introducing liquid metal is demonstrated to trigger the capacitive behavior in the ASSBs for the first time. Two paramount criteria of inducing capacitive behavior in ASSBs are proposed, and both of them are accomplished by utilizing liquid metal Ga. As a result, the capacitive behavior contribution to total charge storage reaches 73% at 1 mV s −1 . Benefitted from the improved kinetics, both an excellent rate of performance (81% specific capacity retained at 5 C) and a good cyclability (0.02% decay per cycle during 800 cycles at 1 C) are delivered. The universality of the liquid metal induced capacitive behavior in ASSBs is further verified in multiple active materials. This work provides a fundamental understanding of the origin of the capacitive behavior and opens a new route for fast-charging ASSBs.

Aiming at enhancing cyclic stability and fast charging performance of lithium-ion batteries (LIBs), a sandwich structured composite with a buffer layer of porous silicon (Si) between the carbon layer and SnO 2 layer (C/Si@SnO 2 ) was developed by using ball milling. The results showed that the Si layer with plenty of mesoporous and cracks was coated successfully and the introduction of Si increased the disordered structure of SnO 2 , including the expansion of interlayer spacing, the emergence of Sn and SiOx indicated the reaction between Si and SnO 2 occurred during the ball milling process, while the generation of Si-O-Sn and Si-O-C bonds formed by Si integration connected the three components with intimate interfaces. Used as an anode for LIBs, the C/Si@SnO 2 electrode performed a favorable discharge capacity (919.21 mAh·g −1 at 0.1 A·g −1 ), the ultra-long cyclability after 1000 and 2000 cycles, impressive rate performance (269.87 mAh·g −1 at 5 A·g −1 ), and fast charging capability accompanying discharge capacity of 805.57 mAh·g −1 at 0.2 A·g −1 and charge capacity of 400.55 mAh·g −1 at 2 A·g −1 . In addition, the electrochemical impedance spectroscopy analysis showed that the graphitic carbon layer and porous Si layer improved the rapid Li + diffusion and transportation, which was beneficial to fast charging in LIBs. Our work provided a facile and green ball milling method to construct porous sandwich structured metal oxide/C composites with the introduction of Si, which can effectively increase the disordered structure of composite and also open up a new scheme of Si materials as an anode in the field of fast charging for LIBs.

Group-VA crystals have higher theoretical energy capacities than graphite as anode materials for Li/Na ion batteries. However, their bulks suffer from severe volume expansion and structural breakdown during lithiation or sodiation process, leading to abrupt drop of battery cycle performance. Our experimental and computational results reveal that two-dimensional (2D) group-VA crystals can preserve layered configuration without obvious structure damage. Here, we investigate the mechanism of 2D P, As, and Sb high-capacity anodes for fast-charging Li/Na ion batteries by calculated binding and diffusion properties of Li/Na on group-VA monolayers. Promisingly, group-VA monolayers can give rise to greater charge/discharge capability than their corresponding parent bulk materials. This is mainly because these 2D group-VA materials with c axis free expansion hold appropriate interaction with Li/Na atoms and enjoy especially lower energy barriers than their bulks. The energy barriers calculations of monolayers under mechanical stretching indicate that the structural roughness also plays a role in hard ion mobility in bulk structure besides space constraint. We also evaluate the performance of group-VA monolayers by calculating their density of states and open circuit voltages. These results provide conclusive evidence showing that 2D group-VA materials are promising anodes for Li/Na ion batteries.

Fast charging and all-climate electrochemical behaviors are two of the most important issues of olivine cathodes for lithium ion batteries (LIBs) owing to inferior Li + and electron conduction at a high current density or low temperature. Taking Mn-containing olivine cathode (LiFe 0.8 Mn 0.2 PO 4 , LFMP) as an example, herein, we report a facile interconnected, hierarchically porous and highly conductive framework design strategy to construct an advanced bulk LFMP@graphene hybrid, realizing superior fast charging capability and wide temperature performance (−20∼80 °C). Such hybrids not only offer well-interconnected and highly conductive graphene networks, but also possess hierarchical porous interiors where the former ensures high-efficiency charge transfer between active components while the latter facilitates Li + diffusion. Benefiting from these advantages, the obtained hybrids deliver superior rate capability (85.0 mAh g −1 up to 20C) and high capacity retentions of 94.1 % after 3000 cycles at 10C (50 °C), and 91.7 % after 500 cycles at 5C (80 °C), and 93.6 % after 1300 cycles at 1C (−20 °C). This work provides an efficient strategy to design practical olivine cathode at the material level for fast charging and all-climate LIBs.

Slow ion kinetics of negative electrode materials is the main factor of limiting fast charge and discharge of batteries. Sluggish Na + kinetics property leads to large electrode polarization, resulting in poor rate and cyclic performances. Herein, an electrode of ultrasmall tin nanoparticles decorated in N, S codoped carbon monolith (TCM) with exceptional high-rate capability and ultrastable cycling behavior for Na-storage is reported. The resulted TCM electrode exhibits an extremely high retention of 96% initial charge capacity after 500 cycles at a current density of 500 mA g −1 . Significantly, when the current density is elevated to an ultrahigh rate of 5000 mA g −1 , a high reversible capacity of 228 mAh g −1 after the 2000th cycle is still maintained. More importantly, the stable and fast Na-storage of TCM is investigated and understood by experimental characterizations and kinetics calculations, including interfacial ion/electron transport behavior, ion diffusion, and quantitative pseudocapacitive analysis. These investigations elucidate that the TCM shows improved ion/electron conductivity and enhanced interfacial kinetics. An entirely new perspective to deep insights into the fast ion/electron transport mechanisms revealed by interfacial kinetics of sodiation/desodiation, which contributes to the profound understanding for developing fast charging/discharging and long-term stable electrodes in sodium-ion batteries, is provided.

Due to the inherent characteristics of traditional graphite anode material, its lithium diffusion kinetic is significantly constrained, easily leading to a noticeable capacity degradation during rapid charge/discharge cycling. Although modifying the graphite by mixing the hard carbon can effectively enhance its fast-charging performance, yet the underlying mechanism of improvement effect and structure design of interface are still needed to further investigate. To address this research gap, hard carbon-coated graphite (HCCG) material has been designed and synthesized through simple interface engineering, which is aimed to explore and elucidate the optimization mechanisms on fast-charging performance from the graphite interface perspective. According to the electrochemical calculations, the HCCG anode exhibits significant enhancements. Specially, its reversible lithium content is increased by approximately 8 % at various states of charge, its exchange current density is tripled, and its Tafel slope is reduced to one-quarter of the original graphite. Therefore, the HCCG maintains an impressive 86.89 % capacity retention and a high capacity of 202.3 mAh g −1 after 1450 cycles at ultrahigh rate of 5C. These improvements indicate a substantial reduction in electrode polarization during fast charging, which is ascribed to the abundant lithium intercalation pathways and accommodation space provided by the intimate hard carbon coating layer. Moreover, as a “buffer layer,” hard carbon coating can accommodate considerable amount of lithium deposited on the graphite surface, effectively mitigating the capacity loss caused by lithium deposition and maintaining effective electrochemical contact without delamination. This comprehensive analysis of hard carbon coating illustrates the improvement mechanism of fast-charging performance, which can offer valuable insights into the dynamic and structural optimization of graphite anode interfaces.

Prussian blue and its analogues (PBA) are promising cathode materials for economical large-scale sodium-ion batteries (SIBs). Manganese-based PBA, abbreviated as “PW”, offers advantages such as high voltage, high capacity, and good cost-effectiveness but faces challenges with manganese dissolution and structural distortion during cycling. In contrast, iron-based PBA, abbreviated as “PB”, maintains more stable structural integrity but exhibits relatively lower capacity. In this study, we introduce an ion-exchange technique to create core-shell structural cathode materials with PW as the main active ingredient and PB as the protective shell (PW@PB). This approach achieves more than doubled capacity retention after 500 cycles compared to naked PW. Furthermore, PW@PB demonstrates notable rate capability enhancements, retaining 80 % of its capacity at 0.1C when subjected to a high rate of 10C, proving its potential for use in fast-charging SIBs. The improved performance is primarily attributed to the reduced lattice and bound water in the structure of PW@PB. Additionally, the stable outer layer of PB inhibits the leaching of Mn and Fe, minimizing lattice distortion during the charge-discharge process.

Ni-rich Li-ion cathode materials promise high energy density, but are limited in power density and cycle life, resulting from their poor dynamic characteristics and quick degradation. On the other hand, capacitor electrode materials promise high power density and long cycle life but limited capacities. A joint energy storage mechanism of these two kinds is performed in the material-compositional level in this paper. A valence coupling between carbon π-electrons and O 2− is identified in the as-prepared composite material, using a tracking X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy strategy. Besides delivering capacity simultaneously from its LiNi 0.8 Co 0.1 Mn 0.1 O 2 and capacitive carbon components with impressive amount and speed, this material shows robust cycling stability by preventing oxygen emission and phase transformation via the discovered valence coupling effect. Structural evolution of the composite shows a more flattened path compared to that of the pure LiNi 0.8 Co 0.1 Mn 0.1 O 2 , revealed by the in situ X-ray diffraction strategy. Without obvious phase transformation and losing active contents in this composite material, long cycling can be achieved.
