Traditional lignin-silver nanoparticle hydrogels are often limited by slow gelation (> 3 h), weak mechanical properties, and limited antibacterial efficacy. In this study, we introduce a novel approach by incorporating metal ions (Fe 3+ and Al 3+ ) into lignin-silver nanoparticle (AgNP) composites embedded in an acrylic acid (AA) matrix. This modification significantly enhances the hydrogel's multifunctionality. The presence of metal ions accelerates gelation, enabling rapid formation of highly crosslinked structures within seconds, a notable improvement over conventional lignin-based hydrogels, which typically exhibit slower gelation. Detailed characterization using SEM, FTIR, and XPS analyses reveals that metal ions interact with lignin moieties, inducing redox reactions and coordinating with functional groups, such as phenolic hydroxyl and carboxyl groups. The Fe 3+ -based hydrogel demonstrates potent antibacterial activity, driven by reactive oxygen species (ROS) generation (MIC = 1 mg/mL and MBC = 2 mg/mL against Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus , respectively), while the Al 3+ -based hydrogel shows enhanced mechanical resilience, maintaining 95% recovery after compression. Compared to conventional lignin@AgNPs-AA hydrogels, both hydrogels exhibit remarkable multifunctional properties, including 2.5 × higher compressive strength, 90% DPPH radical scavenging activity, and improved stability. Mechanistic studies highlight distinct antibacterial pathways: Fe 3+ promotes oxidative stress through Fenton reactions, while Al 3 ⁺ disrupts bacterial membranes. This work establishes a rapid, metal-ion-catalyzed approach for the development of lignin-based hydrogels, addressing previous limitations and offering promising applications in wound healing, sensors, and environmental remediation. β-Cyclodextrin (β-CD) is often used as a drug carrier for biomedical materials due to its unique cavity structure. Herein, β-CD was modified by acryloyl chloride and further copolymerized with N-isopropylacrylamide (NIPAM) and acrylic acid (AA) to obtain PNIPAM-co-β-CD-AC. The results showed that the critical phase transition temperature of PNIPAM/β-CD-AC could be controlled at 19 °C, and the fast sol–gel phase transition was realized in 2–10 s. The hydrophobic drug carried in this hydrogel can constantly be released for more than 6 days at pH values (pH 5.5–8), and the duration may match the recovery of the wound. As a dressing hydrogel, its rapid gel formation and inversion as well as shear-thinning behavior prevent secondary wound damage. The β-CD-based hydrogel also has good biocompatibility and antioxidant properties, which provide a good potential choice for wound dressings, especially for exposed wounds in winter.

Optimal modification and gelation strategies of polysaccharide hydrogels have been developed for biomedical applications. Herein, a kind of fast crosslinking alginate hydrogel with superior gel properties was prepared for the first time combining dual crosslinking mechanisms. Firstly, sodium alginate (SA) was modified by vinyl ether side chains through one-step amidation reaction with aminopropyl vinyl ether (APVE) catalyzed by EDC/NHS. Just within 10 s, the grafting product of SA-VE was demonstrated to form hydrogen bonded hydrogel SA-VE/H 2 O spontaneously. Based on this mechanism, a dual crosslinking alginate hydrogel SA-VE/DTT was fabricated through introducing thiol-ene click chemistry reaction with dithiothreitol (DTT) under UV exposure. According to rheological results, the photo-crosslinking process was completed within 5–9 min. Combining hydrogen bonding and thiol-ene click chemistry, the dual crosslinking mechanism was proved to bring the hydrogel system not only fast gelation but also superior storage modulus up to 13373 Pa and excellent stability of over 1 month. All the hydrogels exhibited non-cytotoxicity towards NIH-3T3 fibroblasts. Furthermore, the 26 s rapid hemostasis behavior of SA-VE exhibited in rat tail hemostasis experiment reveals its potential application in wound dressing materials.

Uncontrolled bleeding in emergency situations is a great threat to both military and civilian lives, and an ideal hemostat for effectively controlling prehospital hemorrhage is urgently needed but still lacking. Although hemostatic hydrogels are promising for emergency hemostasis, they are currently challenged by either the mutual exclusion between a short gelation time and strong adhesive network or the insufficient functionality of ingredients and complicated operations for in situ curing. Herein, an extracellular matrix biopolymer-based and multifunctional hemostatic hydrogel that simultaneously integrates rapid thermoresponsive gelation, robust wet adhesion, and ease of use in emergencies is rationally engineered. This hydrogel can be conveniently used via simple injection and achieves instant sol–gel phase transition at body temperature. Its comprehensive performance could be facilely regulated by tuning the proportions of components, and the optimal performance (gelation time 6–8 s, adhesion strength 125 ± 3.6 kPa, burst pressure 282 ± 4.1 mmHg) is established due to the coordinated enhancement of the photo-cross-linking pretreatment and the hydrophilic–hydrophobic balance among various interactions in the hydrogel system. Additionally, it exhibits significant coagulation effect in vitro and enables effective hemostasis and wound healing in vivo. This work provides a promising platform for versatile applications of hydrogel-based materials, including emergency hemostasis.

Hydrogels with rapid gelation ability and robust mechanical properties are highly desirable for nascent applications in biomedical, wearable electronic, industrial and agricultural fields. However, current rapid-gelation hydrogels are compromised by poor mechanical properties, complex design of precursor molecular structures and limited precursor species. Herein, we propose a facile and universal strategy to achieve rapid gelation, strengthening and toughening of free-radical polymerized hydrogels by introducing cheap and accessible amino acids. Amino acids not only activate persulfate to quickly produce free radicals and thus induce fast free radical polymerization, but also can form strong hydrogen bonds with the network chains to strengthen and toughen the hydrogels. For example, with the presence of L-serine, the acrylamide (AM) monomer shows rapid gelation within tens of seconds, and moreover the resulting hydrogel reaches a tensile strength of 0.45 MPa and a breaking strain of 2060%. More importantly, owing to the extremely dynamic feature of the hydrogen bonds between L-serine molecules and network chains, the hydrogel possesses the advantages of low hysteresis, rapid self-recovery capability and outstanding fatigue resistance. Furthermore, this strategy is general to a wide range of amino acids and monomers. We also demonstrate that this rapid, controllable and universal strategy for the fabrication of mechanically robust hydrogels holds tremendous potential for diverse practical applications, such as flexible electronic sensors and ultraviolet (UV)-blocking artificial skins.

Hydrogels are soft materials used in an array of biomedical applications. However, the in situ formation of hydrogels at target sites, particularly in dynamic in vivo environments, usually requires a prolonged gelation time and results in poor adhesion. These limitations cause considerable loss of both hydrogel mass and encapsulated therapeutic cargoes, thereby compromising treatment outcomes. Here, we report the development of a hydrogel based on thiourea-catechol reaction to enhance the bioadhesion. Compared with classical bioadhesive hydrogels, our hydrogels show enhanced mechanical properties, exceedingly short curing time, and pH-independent gelation with a much lower oxidant concentration. We further report the robust adhesion of our hydrogels to acidic gastric tissues and easy delivery to the porcine stomach via endoscopy. The delivered hydrogels adhered to ulcer sites in vivo for at least 48 hours. Hydrogel treatment of gastric ulcers in rodent and porcine models accelerated ulcer healing by suppressing inflammation and promoting re-epithelization and angiogenesis. The improved retention of proregenerative growth factors and reduced exposure to external catabolic factors after hydrogel application may contribute to the observed therapeutic outcomes. Our findings reveal a promising biomaterial-based approach for treating gastrointestinal diseases.

Despite gel electrolytes' high ionic conductivity and appreciable mechanical softness making them promising candidates for flexible electronic devices (FEDs), preparing gel electrolytes which seamlessly interface with electrodes is still challenging, especially via rapid gelation. Inspired by cartilage, a mechanically interlocked and hydrogen bonded electrolyte–electrode interface (MHEEI) generated using an ultrafast gelation process via in situ interfacial polymerization of gelatin macromolecules and acrylamide monomers hybrid fluid is reported. A nanoporous carbon (NC) electrode favorable for polymer matrix embedding is employed to lock into the in situ gel electrolyte through a mechanical interlocking structure. Polyacrylamide chains inside the nanoporous electrode are strongly connected with gelatin chains via intra-intermolecular hydrogen bond interactions. Their synergy simultaneously imparts low contact resistance (1 Ω), high ionic conductivity (55.9 mS cm−1) and interfacial toughness of 16 J m−2 at MHEEI, which is 6.4 times greater than that obtained by a physical stacking approach. The NC electrode with MHEEI thus exhibits a specific capacitance of 336 F g−1 (at 8 A g−1), about 12 times greater than that of the electrode with MEEI. Additionally, an interrupted electronic circuit is instantly restored via ultrafast construction of interlocking layers. This concept can be demonstrated in other gel systems, providing generalized design principles for the ultrafast construction of interlocking structures for FEDs.

Intrinsic conducting hydrogels fabricated in situ at low temperatures with self-adhesive properties and excellent flexibility hold significant promise for energy applications and outdoor damage repair. However, challenges such as low polymerization rate and self adhesion, insufficient ionic conductivity, inflexibility, and poor stability under extreme cold conditions have hindered their utilization as high-performance sensors. In this study, we designed an intrinsic conducting hydrogel (PADOC) composed of acrylic acid, acryloyloxyethyltrimethylammonium chloride, N,N′-methylenebis(2-propenamide), self-fabricated oxidized curdlan (OC), and a water/glycerol binary solvent. The novel hydrogel exhibited rapid gelation (30 s) at 0 °C facilitated by the promotion of OC, without the need for external energy input. Our findings from FT-IR, NMR, XPS, XRD, EPR spectra, MS, and DSC analyses revealed that OC underwent selective oxidation via the evolved Fenton reaction at 30 °C, serving as bioaccelerators for PAD polymerization. Due to OC’s reductive structure and increased solubility, the reaction activation energy of the PAD polymerization reaction significantly reduced from 103.2 to 54.4 kJ/mol. PADOC ionic hydrogels demonstrated an electrical conductivity of 1.00 S/m, 0.7% low hysteresis, 39.6 kPa self-adhesive strength, and 923% strain-at-break and kept even at −20 °C owing to dense hydrogen and ionic bonds between PAD and OC chains. Furthermore, PADOC ionic hydrogels exhibited antifatigue properties for 10 cycles (0–100%) due to electrostatic interactions and hydrogen bonding. Remarkably, using a self-designed device, the rapid polymerization of PADOC effectively repaired copper pipeline leakage under 86 kPa pressure and detected 1% strain variation as a strain sensor. This study opens a new avenue for the rapid gelation of self-adhesive and flexible intrinsic conducting hydrogels with robust sensor performance.

The application of wearable sensors is becoming increasingly widespread, among which hydrogels, with their excellent biocompatibility, multifunctionality and modulus similar to human skin, are considered one of the most promising wearable sensors. However, when using hydrogel flexible sensors adhering to human skin, unnecessary adhesion often occurs, resulting in operational difficulties and unstable signal collection. Moreover, the hydrogel polymerization process is time-consuming and difficult to perform. Based on this, we have prepared an asymmetric adhesive dual-layer conductive hydrogel that can be rapidly prepared to address the above issues. Introducing ZnCl2 into a solution of tannic acid (TA) coated diatomaceous earth (DE) forms a self-catalytic system, allowing the hydrogel to be prepared within 15 seconds. The components ZnCl2 and TA endow the system with lower freezing temperature and strong adhesion properties. By adjusting the ratio accordingly, a dual-layer hydrogel consisting of an asymmetrical structure could be prepared facilely. The adhesive side can firmly adhere to human skin and can be removed easily without leaving any residue, while the non-adhesive side can prevent it from sticking to fingers or clothing and contamination, facilitating stable signal transmission. The dual-layer hydrogel developed in this study possesses many advantages such as rapid gelation, asymmetric adhesion, strong interfacial force, mechanical reinforcement and anti-freezing properties. It can stably monitor a wide range of strains and daily human movements, with broad application prospects, providing a new approach for the development of functional flexible devices.

Owing to low biotoxicity, excellent stretchability, and good adhesion properties, hydrogel sensors have received extensive attention from the academic community and developed rapidly. Many scholars have made a series of efforts to explore suitable rapid gelation schemes, which have greatly expanded the development space of hydrogel sensors, but the existing rapid gelation schemes are inevitably cumbersome or costly while achieving rapid gelation. In this work, a simple and inexpensive controlled rapid gelation scheme was found, which only requires the addition of a thermal initiator and ammonium ferrous sulphate into the gel system to enable the controlled rapid formation of chitosan/acrylamide hydrogels at room temperature. In this study, while achieving rapid gelation (within 12 s), the physical properties as well as the sensing properties of the hydrogels were improved by adding Al 3+ and MXene. The final composites obtained have good physical properties (stress 500 kPa, strain 2640 %), excellent sensitivity (GF = 4.48, deformation of 200–500 %), and adhesion properties to a wide range of materials. The chitosan/acrylamide/MXene sensors prepared by this protocol have the effect of detecting different movements of the human body, including repetitive or fine movement changes.

Thermal protection system (TPS) is of great significance to launch hypersonic flight and landing process of hypersonic vehicles, which can effectively shield the hypersonic vehicle from severe aerodynamic heating encountered. Phenolic aerogels play an important role in TPS due to their characteristics of low density, high porosity, and low thermal conductivity. However, phenolic aerogel is easy to be oxidized at elevated temperatures under oxidizing environments, which severely limits its large-scale application as thermal insulation materials in TPS. In this study, a novel TiB 2 –B 4 C/carbon (TB/C) aerogel composite was synthesized by introducing TiB 2 and B 4 C particles into phenolic aerogels through quick-gelation and mechanical mixing. The developed aerogel composites were characterized by scanning electron microscopy, Fourier transform infrared, thermal analysis, etc. , to evaluate their microstructure, oxidation resistance, and mechanical properties. Experimental evidence showed that TiB 2 and B 4 C particles reacted with the oxygen-containing molecules to form TiO 2 –B 2 O 3 layer, which effectively improved oxidation resistance and mechanical properties of phenolic aerogel composites.

Recurrent aphthous ulceration (RAU) is a common oral condition that significantly affects patients' quality of life worldwide. Mucosal dressings for wound healing and drug delivery are essential in RAU management. The dynamic and moist environment of the oral cavity poses major obstacles to localized drug delivery, particularly in terms of patient self-administration and dressing retention. In this study, we present a universal oral mucosal drug delivery system based on sprayable rapid gelation powder (SRGP) composed of multigroup-modified alginate, which can be evenly sprayed onto ulcers in different locations within the oral cavity using a low-cost, commercially available plastic spray bottle. Upon contact with the wound, SRGP absorbs saliva and forms an adhesive hydrogel barrier in 2 s, which can continuously release the drug for over 12 h, even in the presence of saliva and oral activities. When loaded with drugs such as lidocaine hydrochloride and dexamethasone sodium phosphate, experiments in rat and dog models demonstrated that drug loaded SRGP significantly reduced inflammation at the ulcer site and reduced wound healing time by 2–3 days compared to commercial dressings. Furthermore, the powder formulation of SRGP can be stored a long time for 24 months, highlighting its potential as a clinical hydrogel dressing for oral ulcers.
