A Wearable Sensor Based on Gold Nanowires/Textile and Its Integrated Smart Glove for Motion Monitoring and Gesture Expression

Zhiqi Zhao,Qiujin Li,Yu Dong,Jixian Gong,Zheng Li,Xiran Qiao,Jianfei Zhang

Nowadays, flexible piezoresistive sensors have drawn considerable attention in e-skin, motion monitoring devices, etc. Wearability is an important nature of various flexible sensors. Herein, a sensitive flexible piezoresistive pressure sensor with gold nanowires (AuNWs) combined textile with high sensitivity and durability is presented. The knitted cotton fabric is used as the matrix for loading conductive material AuNWs to fabricate the wearable pressure sensors as clothing components. Cotton fabric can be easily transformed into conductive textile due to impregnation and combination with AuNWs. This AuNWs/textile material is demonstrated to be an appropriate flexible sensor to monitor various human motions, such as finger pressing, joints bending, and foot status. A smart glove is integrated with this AuNWs/textile as the sensing block for gesture expression and recognition, signal reading, and transmission. Besides the common gesture with finger movement combination, e.g., numbers, the simple AuNWs/textile-based smart glove can also serve for expressing some emoji symbol and be considered as a human–machine interface for some gesture emoji used in internet social platform. This AuNWs/textile is expected to be used as a practical wearable sensor with great potential for extensive applications, including human–machine interface, healthcare monitoring, and the Internet of Things construction.

Enhancing Grasping Function with a Thermoresponsive Ionogel Adhesive Glove for Patients with Rheumatic Diseases

Shiqiang Wang,Shiqing Liu,Jingfeng Zhang,Zhouyang Yu,Yifan Shao,Cong Zhao,Jiahong Ma,Xin Fu,Mengqi Yang,Lie Chen,Mingjie Liu,Li Wen

Rheumatic diseases often result in joint deformities and peripheral nerve damage, leading to impaired hand function. Current wearable assistive gloves commonly rely on external forces to flex fingers for grasping, but they face limitations such as bulky hardware, complex finger manipulation, and a risk of joint injuries. This study presents a lightweight, portable, soft wearable adhesive glove based on thermoresponsive ionogels aimed at enhancing grasping function. The ionogel exhibits high adhesion (≈35 kPa to various materials) at 25 °C and low adhesion (≈6.8 kPa) at 45 °C. Smart adhesive pads use embedded flexible heaters and temperature sensors for closed-loop control of the ionogels’ temperature, providing programmable adhesion. A rapid switch from high to low adhesion is achieved within 4 s at 4 V. Additionally, a hands-free control interface uses inertial measurement units to detect the user's intent to release, facilitating easy and intuitive detachment. Weighing only 47 g, the glove is 7.2 times lighter than existing assistive gloves. Notably, it empowers users to grasp and release a variety of objects that will otherwise be unmanageable. Evaluation of various activities of daily living demonstrates that the glove significantly enhances grasping ability and increases autonomy for patients with rheumatic diseases.

Incorporating Machine Learning Strategies to Smart Gloves Enabled by Dual-Network Hydrogels for Multitask Control and User Identification

Jianwen Liu,Zhicheng Qiu,Hao Kan,Tao Guan,Changyang Zhou,Kai Qian,Cong Wang,Yang Li

Smart gloves are often used in human–computer interaction scenarios due to their portability and ease of integration. However, their application in the field of information security has been less studied. Herein, we propose a smart glove using an iontronic capacitive sensor with significant pressure-sensing performance. Besides, an operator interface has been developed to match the smart glove, which is capable of multitasking integration of mouse movement, music playback, game control, and message typing in Internet chat rooms by capturing and encoding finger-tapping movements. In addition, by integrating machine learning, we can mine the characteristics of individual behavioral habits contained in the sensor signals and, based on this, achieve a deep binding of the user to the smart glove. The proposed smart glove can greatly facilitate people’s lives, as well as explore a new strategy in research on the application of smart gloves in data security.

Wen-xiao Lu,Ping Fang,Ming-lu Zhu,Yi-run Zhu,Xin-jian Fan,Tian-chen Zhu,Xuan Zhou,Feng-xia Wang,Tao Chen,Li-ning Sun

Wearable smart glove of gesture language provides a novel strategy for the hearing-impaired people to commutate with the world. Current commercialized solutions of gesture language are limited by the full extent of human interaction beyond operation dexterity, sensory feedback, and the huge cost of fabrication. Herein, a low-cost, high-efficient gesture-language-recognition feedback system combined with the strain-sensor arrays and machine-learning technology is proposed. The strain-sensor arrays integrated with 3D-printed glove can extract both spatial and temporal information about the finger's movement. The smart glove achieves gesture-language recognition using machine learning with an accuracy of over 99%. Integrating with multidimensional manipulation, visual feedback and artificial intelligence (AI)-based gesture-language recognition, the smart system can accurately recognize complex gestures and provide real-time feedback to users. The smart glove system can not only provide an efficient way for hearing-impaired persons to communicate with the outside world, but also benefit industries in multiple fields such as entertainment, home healthcare, sports training, and the medical industry.

Flexible thermosensitive films based on shallow-trap persistent luminescence for high-resolution texture imaging of fingerprints even through latex gloves

Shenghui Zheng,Junpeng Shi,Xiaodan Wang,Xiaoyan Fu,Hongyong Fan,Hongwu Zhang

Here, we have developed a novel thermosensitive technique based on shallow-trap persistent luminescence to achieve high-resolution and long-duration texture imaging of fingerprints even through latex gloves. A thermosensitive flexible film that consists of a transparent silica gel embedded with a shallow-trap Bi2Ga4O9:Eu3+,Cr3+ (BGO) phosphor microarray exhibits broadband near-infrared PersL, which enables sensitive temperature sensing using a thermally stimulated luminescence (TSL) method. The uniform surface conical arrays of the BGO film ensure a high thermal sensing resolution. Only a simple touch is enough to induce thermal distribution that can be easily visualized as luminescence using an EMCCD camera. Furthermore, the BGO film responds rapidly to small temperature fluctuations with high sensitivity (8.10 ± 0.476% K−1), enabling fingerprint imaging even through latex gloves in only a few seconds. This imaging strategy is very promising for sensitive temperature sensing without power supply, and it also opens new application opportunities for shallow-trap PersL materials.

High-Sensitivity All-Fiber Sensor Smart Gloves for Hand Perception

Yuan Pan,Kaifeng Chen,Yi Liu,Yuxuan Liu,Mengting He,Zhite Xie,Zongrong Wang

Flexible piezoresistive sensors (FPSs) with high sensitivity and conformability are crucial for achieving fine operations in electronic gloves. In this work, a chemical grafting method is used to ensure strong interfacial bonding between the conductive phase and the flexible polyimide (PI) matrix with a high glass transition temperature (Tg). This design helps to tackle the stress relaxation and interfacial debonding problems commonly faced by FPSs. Silver fiber electrodes are prepared by in situ reduction of silver nanoparticles on PI fibers to further improve the sensitivity. This FPS is characterized by high sensitivity (214.6 kPa–1), low response time and recovery time (44 and 42 ms, respectively), outstanding recoverable performance (with a low hysteresis of 4.58% FS), and remarkable dynamic stability (a 3.6% decay of signal intensity after 24,000 cycles). An all-fiber flexible piezoresistive sensor array glove has been constructed to achieve conformal contact with the robot hand. Furthermore, comprehensive detection of multipoint pressures on the hand and high-sensitivity tactile perception for the robot hand have been achieved.

Transforming waste rubber gloves into value-added fluorescent carbon quantum dots for direct ink writing

Yanqing Liao,Haitao Ren,Shuhan Liu,Hong Kang,Meng Luo,Tian Luo,Yiyin Zhu,Baoyang Lu,Eric Lichtfouse,Chuanyi Wang

About 10 million tons of waste rubber are generated annually in China, which has caused potential environmental pollution and resource waste due to improper disposal. In the circular economy context, there is a need for methods to make rubber waste into valuable carbon materials. Here, we report a simple acid-assisted hydrothermal process for the first time to convert nitrile gloves into value-added carbon quantum dots (CQDs), and their use in ink-writing hydrogels. The product yield of CQDs is 36 % under optimized conditions, surpassing previously reported results of CQDs derived from plastics. Moreover, the CQDs exhibit high fluorescence stability from pH 2–7, under ultraviolet irradiation during 3 h, and treated by H 2 O 2 at concentrations of 0–500 μmol/L. CQDs were near-spherical with an average particle size of 2.45 nm and the lattice fringe spacing measured at 0.21 nm. The oxygen-containing groups on the surface of CQDs endowed them high hydrophilicity and excitation-dependent fluorescence behavior with a quantum yield of 9.7 % and a lifetime of 6.94 ns. Given their favorable fluorescence and hydrophilic properties, the direct ink-writing hydrogels prepared with CQDs and polyvinyl alcohol display unique patterns on polyethylene terephthalate (PET) substrates, exhibiting high dimensional accuracy and the ability to show fluorescent colors.

A multisensory-feedback tactile glove with dense coverage of sensing arrays for object recognition

Ye Qiu,Zhiqiang Wang,Pengcheng Zhu,Binbin Su,Chang Wei,Ye Tian,Zheng Zhang,Hao Chai,Aiping Liu,Lihua Liang,Huaping Wu

Somatosensory networks that provide sophisticated sensory feedback and enable the dexterous manipulation of the human grasp remain difficult to replicate in robots, which is attributed to the grand challenge of densely covering the hand with tactile arrays. Here, a multisensory tactile glove is reported that is capable of object recognition with dense coverage of pressure and temperature sensing arrays. The synergistic effect of the multimodal configuration allows the tactile arrays to perceive contact pressure and thermal conductivity of an object involved in grasping motion, thus enhancing the accuracy via the combination of the mechanical features with thermal properties. By leveraging the multiple scanning technology and wireless transmission system, the tactile glove achieves a recognition accuracy of 94.2% in differentiating 20 types of objects with a modified deep learning algorithm. The large-area sensing arrays with high spatiotemporal resolution and multimodal sensing capabilities, which paves the way for the development of robot grasping tools, human–machine interfacing, and advanced prosthetics.

Preparation of PVC/EVA Gloves with Moisture Permeability by Wettability Gradient

Yan Jiang,Yue Sun,Jie Zhang,Hongmei Zhao,Changhai Xu,Jinmei Du,Luyue Jia,Dagang Miao

Graphical In this study, we synthesized an anionic polyacrylate water repellent and for the first time utilized it to enhance the moisture permeability in PVC/EVA membranes. The common polyvinyl chloride (PVC) gloves affect moisture and air permeability due to their dense nature, affecting the wearing comfort. Inspired by moisture-permeable fabrics, this study was conducted to enhance the moisture permeability of PVC/EVA membranes by introducing ethylene vinyl acetate copolymer (EVA) blended with PVC to form a membrane and coating one side of the membrane with a polyacrylate water repellent. The experimental results showed that the water contact angle of the upper (85°) and lower surfaces (99.4°) of the PVC/EVA membrane produced a significant difference. This difference endows the membrane with different wettability. The water vapor transmission of the membranes increased from the initial 163.25 g/m 2 ·24h to 862.9 g/m 2 ·24h. The moisture permeability and thermal conductivity of PVC/EVA membranes were significantly improved. After 30 min in the thermal conductivity test, the temperature of the palm covered with PVC/EVA membranes reached 34.7 °C, which was 0.8 °C higher than that of the palm covered with pure PVC membranes. The SEM images show that the PVC/EVA membrane generated more particles and pores. The results of XRD, TG/DTG, and tensile tests showed that the crystal structure and mechanical strength of the membranes remained unchanged, while their thermal stability improved.

Machine Learning-Enhanced Smart Interactive Glove Utilizing Flexible Gradient Ridge Architecture Iontronic Capacitive Sensor

Donghua Xing,Ziqi Wang,Minyue Zhang,Shun Liu,Wenke Yang,Rui Yin,Hu Liu,Chuntai Liu,Changyu Shen

The rapid advancement of artificial intelligence has spurred significant advances in wearable systems based on flexible sensors, which nevertheless still face significant challenges in maintaining high sensitivity and stability over broad pressure ranges. Here, an iontronic capacitive pressure sensor featuring a gradient ridge architecture (GRA) electrode integrated with a polyvinyl alcohol-phosphoric acid (PVA-H 3 PO 4 ) ionic gel film is developed. The synergistic combination of the engineered electrode morphology and the mechanical durability and electrochemical stability of the ionic gel film enables a high sensitivity of 5.12 kPa −1 in the low-pressure region (0–20 kPa) and maintains a linear sensitivity of 2.02 kPa −1 over 20–463 kPa. The sensor further demonstrates rapid response and recovery times of 36.5 and 38.6 ms, respectively, along with excellent durability over 10 000 loading cycles. When integrated into an intelligent interactive glove, the GRA sensor enables adaptive robotic hand control and improves reliability through a tactile feedback strategy. Leveraging a 2D convolutional neural network, the smart assistive communication system achieves 97% recognition accuracy for ten distinct hand gestures, enabling real-time translation of intuitive gestures into personalized text and voice outputs. These findings highlight significant potential for next-generation human–machine interfaces, intelligent robotics, and high-performance wearable electronics.

A wearable Kevlar-based glove biosensor integrating proline-modified UiO-66 and lipase for on-site detection of methyl parathion

Chenxi Liu,Xiao Wang,Xiangze Jia,Wanlin He,Shaobo Zhang,Hongsheng Liu

To meet the demand for nondestructive detection, we developed a truly human-wearable glove biosensor, which can be applied for in-situ analysis of pesticides on crop surfaces during the picking process. Herein, the Burkholderia cepacia (BCL)@UiO-66/Pro functionalized Kevlar-based laser-induced graphene (LIG) three-electrode glove sensing system was equipped with biocompatible semisolid electrolyte. In this system, Kevlar-based LIG electrodes showed the lowest sheet resistance of 28.26 Ω/sq. and I D /I G ratio value of 0.163 with optimal laser power of 9 %. Importantly, the BCL@UiO-66/Pro modified on Kevlar-based LIG electrode enhanced the catalytic efficiency of the BCL, the absolute value of the redox potential increases from the −0.412 V to −0.664 V due to an increase in the immobilization efficiency of BCL on UiO-66 after proline modification. In addition, the Kevlar-based wearable glove biosensor exhibited high repeatability, selective and sensitive electrochemical sensing of MP at concentrations ranging from 5 to 40 μM with a low detection limit of 0.84 μM. During the 10-day storage stability test, the fabricated Kevlar-based LIG biosensor demonstrated good reusability and excellent stability for MP detection with retention of more than 96 % of its initial response. Such wearable Kevlar-based glove biosensor could be a transformative approach for the in-situ analysis of pesticide residue on crops, which could also promote future precision agriculture development.

Catalytic cascade upcycling single-use natural rubber glove wastes into fuels via a two-stage pressurized fixed-bed reactor

Jia Wang,Jianchun Jiang,Xianzhi Meng,Su Shiung Lam,Arthur J. Ragauskas,Yanqin Wang

Chemical upcycling rubber wastes into hydrocarbon fuels offers a promising approach toward achieving carbon neutrality . To generate fuel-range cycloalkanes and isoalkanes from natural rubber glove wastes (NRGWs), the depolymerization of NRGWs was performed by integrating hydropyrolysis with vapor-phase hydrogenation over a bifunctional Ni/Al 2 O 3 -SiO 2 catalyst. Isoprene and limonene were the primary alkenes obtained from the non-catalytic hydropyrolysis of NRGWs, and these intermediates were vapor-phase hydrotreated over Ni/Al 2 O 3 -SiO 2 producing C 10 cycloalkane as the dominant fuel-range products. Complete hydrogenation of isoprene and limonene was achieved under a catalyst to feedstock mass ratio of 2.0, giving a maximum gasoline yield of 92 wt% under 225 °C hydrogenation temperature at 0.2 MPa H 2 . A low hydropyrolysis temperature of 450 °C maximized C 10 cycloalkane yield at 72.3 wt% with 80.1% selectivity, while a high temperature of 600 °C yielded 76.6 wt% C 5 isoalkane. A deconstruction mechanism in the catalytic cascade upcycling of NRGWs was proposed by employing limonene hydrogenation as a probe reaction. The results demonstrate that upcycling polymer wastes by cascade hydropyrolysis‑hydrogenation is a promising approach to produce alternative fuels with improved properties.
