An oil-contamination-resistant PVP/PAN electrospinning membrane for high-efficient oil–water mixture and emulsion separation

Haitao Meng,Tong Xu,Mingyuan Gao,Jie Bai,Chunping Li

Oil–water separation is an urgent issue due to the frequently occurred oil leakages and increasing discharge of oily wastewater. The pollutional and wastewater can not only damage the environment, but endanger human health. Owing to the small particle size of the oil contamination, it is still a challenge for the separation of oil–water emulsion. In this study, we developed a facile strategy to prepare a hydrophilic polyvinylpyrrolidone/polyacrylonitrile (PVP/PAN) nanofibrous membrane for oil–water mixture and emulsion separation. The lowest water contact angle on the membrane surface can achieve 16.7°, thus the membranes can effectively resist the oil contamination on them. Moreover, the membrane can efficiently separate oil–water mixtures and emulsion by gravity. In addition, it can separate oil–water mixtures in harsh conditions (pH = 1 and 14). Membranes prepared in this work would hold a great potential in the practical use of water treatment and environmental industry.

Ultra-low pressure PES ultrafiltration membrane with high-flux and enhanced anti-oil-fouling properties prepared via in-situ polycondensation of polyamic acid

Kaizhen Wang,Shuhao Wang,Kaifeng Gu,Wentao Yan,Yong Zhou,Congjie Gao

Polyamic acid (PAA) is a flexible polymer and has abundant valuable hydrophilic groups. Herein, we developed an ultra-low pressure ultrafiltration (UF) membrane by integrating PAA into the polyethersulfone (PES) matrix via the “in-situ polycondensation” method. PAA was well compatible with PES and distributed uniformly in the membrane. The introduction of PAA improved membrane hydrophilicity. Meanwhile, the membrane pore structures were also refined. The membrane exhibited an excellent permeability under ultra-low pressure due to its improvement of hydrophilicity and pore structures. Under 0.3 bar, compare with the water flux of PES membrane, PES/PAA membrane improved nearly 2 times (571.05 L/(m 2 ·h)), with a high BSA rejection (≥90%). Even under a lower pressure, 0.1 bar, >300 L/(m 2 ·h) still can be achieved. Interestingly, the membrane we developed could maintain a high performance after drying, and then is very suitable for dry preservation. PES/PAA membrane showed a high oil removal (≥92%) and could remove oil from water effectively. Besides, the membrane exhibited excellent anti-oil-fouling properties. The flux recovery rate of PES/PAA (70.0%) far exceeds that of PES (37.9%) after three filtration and cleaning cycles. The membrane we developed is very valuable in oily wastewater treatment .

Bioinspired Anti-Oil-Fouling Hierarchical Structured Membranes Decorated with Urchin-Like α-FeOOH Particles for Efficient Oil/Water Mixture and Crude Oil-in-Water Emulsion Separation

Yingying Yin,Lei Zhu,Xiao Chang,Jinwei Xue,Shifan Yu,Xiaofang Li,Qingzhong Xue

Designing and constructing a stable water-retention layer acting as the isolation between the oil and membrane surface holds great significance for solving the membrane fouling problems in oil/water separation, including common layered oil/water mixtures, immiscible oil-in-water emulsions, and even high-viscosity crude oil-in-water emulsions. Inspired by the self-cleaning property of sea urchin thorns, a bioinspired anti-oil-fouling hierarchically structured membranes decorated with urchin-like α-FeOOH particles was successfully prepared via the layer-by-layer (LBL) self-assembly method, maintaining numerous effective micro-nanopores. The hierarchical structured membrane exhibited superior superhydrophilicity/underwater superoleophobicity, high water-retention ability, and preferable anti-oil-fouling properties. Furthermore, the biomimetic membrane with controllable pore sizes could not only separate common layered oil/water mixtures but also effectively separate immiscible surfactant-stabilized oil-in-water emulsions of both low-viscosity crude oil and high-viscosity crude oil with an ultrahigh water flux up to 2598.4 L m–2 h–1 and an outstanding separation efficiency of 98.5%, revealing its promising prospect in oily wastewater treatment.

Seaweed-inspired underwater anti-oil-fouling and anti-fogging coating with mechanical durability

Keda Jiang,Zhihua Yang,Yifan Luo,Xiaohang Xue,Feiran Li,Bharat Bhushan,Yunlu Pan,Yanqiang Huo,Xuezeng Zhao,Libo Li,Jun Wei,Wenxin Cao

Ecofriendly fabrication of anti-oil-fouling materials is of interest. Surfaces with underwater superoleophobicity have been fabricated which exhibit limited mechanical durability and water resistance. In this study, we report on a bioinspired bilayer design of a transparent anti-oil-fouling coating. Seaweed surfaces show anti-oil-fouling in the sea due to its high surface hydration ability. Mussels can adhere tightly onto a surface with good stability in the sea by virtue of its levodopa-containing secretions. The surface layer was fabricated using a crosslinked combination of carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) and sodium alginate (AlgS) inspired by seaweed, with the addition of calcium ions. Polydopamine (PDA), a derivative of levodopa, was used as the underlayer to enhance bonding strength and water resistance. Oil that adhered to the coated surface was spontaneously detached upon immersion in water. The mechanism underlying this anti-oil-fouling effect was elucidated using Gibbs free energy theory. The coating exhibited mechanical durability and water resistance. The coating is transparent and preserves the original color of the substrate. The coated glass showed stable anti-fogging and anti-frost performance. These coatings hold promise for a wide range of anti-oil-fouling applications.

Design of multiple anti-fouling and honeycomb-like NH2-AgBiS2 @g-C3N4 hydrogel layer onto PAN fiber membrane for multicomponent pollutant-oil-water emulsion treatment

Hongshan Jia,Yingqing Zhan,Fei Zhu,Ximin Chen,Xinyue Duan,Ning Zhang,Jie Liu,Yinlong Li

Nano-structured hydrogel with unique anti-oil fouling property exhibits big advantage in oil/water separation, but its application in complex oily wastewater (contain oils, organic matter, bacteria, etc.) cleanup is hampered by the insufficient capabilities in multi-antifouling and synergistic treatment. Herein, we constructed the amino-rich NH 2 -AgBiS 2 /PANI (polyaniline)-g-C 3 N 4 based multi-functional hydrogel functional layer onto the polyacrylonitrile (PAN) fiber membrane via polyphenol-mediated chitosan gelation and vacuum-assisted self-assembly techniques. The unique honeycomb-like structure and super-wetting feature synergistically contributed to the powerful oil resistance and flux breakthrough of composite membrane. Such membrane achieved superior permeability (up to 3558 L −1 m −2 h −1 ) for various SDS-stabilized oil-in-water emulsions and remarkable synergistic treatment efficiency of multicomponent pollutant-oil-water emulsion. The rational design of hydrogel layer on membrane surface intensified the photo-response ability and multiple electron transport channels, which offered the favorable photocatalytic self-cleaning performance towards degradation of organic dyes. According to the free radical quenching and EPR experiments, the photocatalytic mechanism was proposed. In addition, the inhibition rate of E. coli could reach 100 % under illumination of 24 h. Therefore, the integration of ultra-low oil adhesion, photocatalytic self-cleaning, and antibacterial features endows membrane with exceptional multiple anti-fouling performance, exhibiting unique advantages over traditional membranes in handling complex membrane fouling issues.

Tannic acid encountering ovalbumin: a green and mild strategy for superhydrophilic and underwater superoleophobic modification of various hydrophobic membranes for oil/water separation

Zhenxing Wang,Shengqiang Ji,Jin Zhang,Qixian Liu,Fang He,Shaoqin Peng,Yuexiang Li

Superhydrophilic membranes have attracted significant attention due to their desirable anti-oil-fouling performance for oil/water separation. Although many strategies have been developed to prepare superhydrophilic membranes, few of them are completely green and can be applied for various highly hydrophobic materials. Since most of the widely used membrane materials are usually hydrophobic, an environmentally friendly and mild strategy that can transform various hydrophobic membranes into superhydrophilic ones is highly desired. Herein, for the first time, based on edible ovalbumin (OVA) and tannic acid (TA, a natural and environmentally friendly plant polyphenol), we have developed a novel, mild and completely green strategy to realize the superhydrophilic transformation of various hydrophobic membranes including polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF), polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE), copper mesh, and fabric. The water-soluble OVA can be adsorbed on hydrophobic materials via hydrophobic interaction, and the adsorbed OVA further acts as a pre-coating to facilitate the subsequent introduction of abundant TA molecules. On the other hand, TA can not only provide abundant hydrophilic groups, but can also induce the degeneration of the adsorbed OVA layer, realizing the formation and firm immobilization of hybrid coatings decorated with abundant nanonodes. The resulting membranes exhibit superhydrophilicity, underwater superoleophobicity (all underwater oil contact angles are above 155° and oil roll-off angles are below 5°) and favorable anti-oil-fouling performance and thus, high-efficiency oil/water separation can be realized. In addition, the membranes can maintain their superhydrophilicity and underwater superoleophobicity after continuous rinsing treatment with salt and surfactant solutions for 6 h or ultrasonic treatment for 5 min, demonstrating their favourable stability.

Multifunctional biomineralized superhydrophilic coating materials with high transparency and outstanding anti-oil-fouling property for diverse applications

Jianlin Yang,Yan Zhang,Shaobin Yang,Zhecun Wang

Superhydrophilic/underwater superoleophobic materials are promising for diverse applications including oil/water separation, self-cleaning, anti-fogging, and biomedicine. The integration of different functions, particularly oil resistance and optical transparency, to design superhydrophilic coatings with multifunctionality is still rare and highly desirable. Here, a transparent and multifunctional superhydrophilic coating was prepared by a simple combination of co-deposition and biomineralization strategy. The mineralized coating exhibits high transparency with a light transmission of approximately 90 % and excellent superhydrophilicity with a water contact angle of nearly 0°. The homogeneous nanostructure and strong hydration capabilities of amorphous calcium carbonate endow the coating with outstanding anti-oil-fouling properties. The coated porous membranes could effectively separate various immiscible oil/water mixtures and oil-in-water emulsions due to its excellent resistance to oil fouling. Furthermore, the transparent superhydrophilic coating demonstrates superior anti-fogging capabilities. With its multifunctionality, independent-substrate universality, and straightforward preparation process, this coating has excellent potential for a wide range of practical applications, such as oil spill remediation and underwater optics, particularly in complex operating environments.

Metal-phenolic network coated cellulose foams for solar-driven clean water production

Yuan Zou,Xiaoai Wu,Haotian Li,Lu Yang,Chaoqun Zhang,Haoxing Wu,Yiwen Li,Li Xiao

Solar-driven water steam generation is a promising strategy for seawater desalination and wastewater purification. However, oil contaminants commonly exist in real water resources, which drives us to design and fabricate photothermal materials with high efficient water steam generation and outstanding anti-oil-fouling ability. Herein, we developed a metal-phenolic network-coated cellulose foam (Fe 3+ /TA@CF), which exhibits not only superb hydrophilicity and underwater lipophobicity, but also achieves high water evaporation rate of ∼1.3 kg m −2 h -1 even in oil-polluted seawater under one sun illumination. In addition, Fe 3+ /TA@CF is demonstrated to be both anti-oil-fouling and anti-salt-fouling, which benefits to long-term evaporation in practical utilizations. Metal ions and oil contaminants in the condensed water vapor are almost eliminated after purification. We believe that this low-cost, biodegradable Fe 3+ /TA@CF paves a way for rationally designing and fabricating high-performance evaporator for oil contaminated water purification.

Antioil-Fouling Superoleophobic-Superhydrophilic Nanofibrous Membranes for Separation of Immiscible Oil–Water Mixtures and Emulsions

Tianwei Huo,Feiran Li,Jian Wang,Yunlu Pan,Xuezeng Zhao,Bharat Bhushan

Superoleophobic-superhydrophilic surfaces have been used for applications in the fabrication of antioil-fouling smart textiles and for immiscible oil–water mixtures and emulsions separation. Typically, these surfaces are constructed by depositing coatings with selective superwetting properties on porous structures. The facile electrospun technique involves the deposition of polymer solutions or melts through an electric field, resulting in nanometer-sized fibers that form nanofibrous membranes with hierarchical structures and a large specific surface area. In this study, superoleophobic-superhydrophilic nanofibrous membranes were prepared by blending perfluorooctanoic acid and polyacrylonitrile polymers and fluorinated TiO2 nanoparticles and electrospinning them. The prepared nanofibrous membranes exhibit superoleophobic and superhydrophilic properties, along with antioil-fouling characteristics. These membranes can separate immiscible oil–water mixtures and oil-in-water emulsions. This superoleophobic-superhydrophilic nanofibrous membranes have broad applications in industry and for environmental protection.

Preparation of PVDF@TiO2 hybrid membrane and the research of the “hydration layer & rigid layer obstruction-electrostatic coalescence” anti-oil fouling mechanism

Yantao Song,Meng Yan,Zixuan Xu,Benqiao He,Biao Wu,Jianxin Li,Zhenyu Cui

In this study, the 3-Aminopropyltriethoxysilane (APTES) was first grafted onto TiO 2 nanoparticles (APTES-TiO 2 nanoparticles), which were then introduced the membrane surface by reacting with anhydride on the membrane surface and Schiff base reaction with the PEI-TA. There are two types of hollow fiber hybrid membranes with varying nanoparticle distributions were constructed. The influence of hybrid mode on the ability of anti-oil fouling was researched. The results indicated that the PVDF@TiO 2 hybrid membrane has a flux recovery rate of 96.68 % and a total flux decline rate of 15.52 %, indicating a good anti-emulsified oil fouling performance. By characterizing the anti-oil droplets adhesion, water-binding capacity, surface charge of membrane and concentrate system coacervate size, the coalescence ability of the hybrid membrane to the oil droplets and the spreading behavior of oil droplets on the surface were uncovered. Ultimately, the anti-fouling mechanism “hydration layer &rigid layer obstruction-electrostatic coalescence” was proposed, which can reasonably explain the weakness of the interplay between the membrane surface and oil droplets, thus slowing down the attaching and spreading of emulsified oil droplets. This study laid the foundation for developing hybrid membranes with high resistance to emulsified oil fouling ability. The proposed anti-fouling mechanism can provide new ideas for the efficient purification of oily wastewater.

Graphene oxide coated meshes with stable underwater superoleophobicity and anti-oil-fouling property for highly efficient oil/water separation

Cheng Chen,Baoliang Chen

Developing underwater superoleophobic filtration materials with robust stability and excellent anti-oil-fouling performance in harsh environments is desired for high efficiency oil/water separation. In this work, irregular hydrophilic graphene oxide (GO) was adopted as a coating material to modify oxidized copper mesh with desired hierarchical surface roughness and hydrophilic composition through a novel in situ copper ion induced crosslinking method. The combination of microscale copper wires and nanoscale hydrophilic GO sheets endowed the resultant GO coated oxidized copper mesh (GO@CuO) with unique underwater superoleophobicity and excellent anti-oil-fouling property. Moreover, the mesh exhibited excellent stability in corrosive solutions with no apparent variations in wetting properties, indicating its good stability. The as-prepared GO@CuO mesh can be applied to separate oil/water mixtures with high efficiency (>99.49%) and good reusability. Due to the excellent anti-oil-fouling property, high separation efficiency, and good stability, the as-prepared underwater superoleophobic mesh could find broad applications in oil/water separations.

Underwater superoleophobic polyvinylidene fluoride membranes using sulfonated dopamine and polyethyleneimine as additives for the separation of oily water

Houying Ma,Yuling Yang,Jianqiang Wang,Zhixiang Zeng,Lijing Zhu

Oil-fouling of the membranes limits further application in the separation and purification of oil-in-water emulsions. Here, anti-oil fouling membranes are engineered by the method of non-solvent induced phase separation (NIPS) which enriches the polysulfonated dopamine (PSDA) and polyethyleneimine (PEI) (PSDA-PEI) to the top surface from mixed casting solution. The obtained membrane achieves excellent anti-oil fouling property as high as 98.2% oil rejection, yet it still possesses good flux of 2362.5 ± 110.9 and 1252.3 ± 71.8 L m −2 h −1 for the separation of 1,2-dichloroethane-in-water and toluene-in-water emulsions. This can be attributed to outstanding hydrophilicity and super underwater superoleophobicity for mussel-inspired PSDA-PEI layer. In addition, the membrane also has excellent stability in acid (pH 1, 3, and 5) or alkali (pH 10 and 12) solutions. This work provides a facile method to engineer underwater superoleophobic membranes with excellent anti-oil fouling by mussel-inspired chemistry for oily water treatment. Graphical
