Durable antibacterial cotton fabrics with good performance enabled by quaternary ammonium salts

Ding Qi,Liu Jiang-long,Liu Yan-Yan,He Wen-Zhan,Zhang Lin,Xu Ying-Jun

For addressing the issue of limited durable antibacterial cotton fabric, this study developed and synthesized quaternary ammonium salt antimicrobial agents. The chemical structure was analyzed by FTIR and 1 H NMR. The cotton fabric was subjected to surface modification techniques, such as pad-dry-cure, following the careful selection of appropriate quaternary ammonium salt. The chemical state and surface morphology were evaluated through XPS and SEM. Furthermore, the cotton fabric underwent comprehensive assessments, which included antibacterial testing, laundering cycle testing, evaluation of mechanical properties, and analysis of comfort performance. The results demonstrated that the treated cotton fabric achieved a high bacteriostatic and fungistatic rate of 99.99%, 87.5%, and 99.99% against S. aureus , E. coli , and C. albicans respectively even after 50 laundering cycles, while maintaining exceptional antibacterial effectiveness and laundering durability due to the formation of covalent bonds with the cotton fabric. The treated cotton fabric met AAA grade standards for antibacterial rate without causing any significant decline in mechanical properties. Furthermore, enhancements in hydrophilicity, softness, and wrinkle resistance were observed.

Preparation of amino acid-derived silicones as durable and biocompatible antibacterial finishing agents for cotton fabric

Guanwu Yin,Xiaoyue Yang,Quanbo Xu,Xiaofan Chen,Haiyan Wang

Antibacterial cotton fabric has attracted significant attention due to its widespread applications in clinical and medical supplies. However, many of these fabrics suffer from inadequate antibacterial durability and biocompatibility, which not only limit their practical application but also pose potential risks to human health. Herein, a series of aminoethylaminopropyl polydimethylsiloxane (AEAPS) with various amino acids were successfully synthesized, then the corresponding silicone oil emulsions were obtained via phase inversion emulsification and a durable and biocompatible antibacterial cotton fabric was achieved. The influence of various amino acid residues on antibacterial efficacy was investigated and L-Tryptophan (Trp) graft silicone oil (L-Trp-AEAPS) exhibits the best antibacterial performance. In addition, the resulting antibacterial cotton fabric (L-Trp-AEAPS-CF) shows good antibacterial activity against E. coli and S. aureus , excellent biocompatibility, and low toxicity owing to the amino acid residue. Finally, after 50 laundering cycles, the L-Trp-AEAPS-CF retained an antibacterial efficiency exceeding 98 %, indicating excellent washing durability. The L-Trp-AEAPS-CF with antibacterial durability and biocompatibility exhibited broad application prospects in biomedical materials.

Durable antimicrobial cotton fabric fabricated by carboxymethyl chitosan and quaternary ammonium salts

Wang Lujie,Wen Xiaodong,Zhang Xujun,Yuan Shuntao,Xu Qingbo,Fu Feiya,Diao Hongyan,Liu Xiangdong

In this article, carboxymethyl chitosan (CMC) and (3-carboxypropyl) trimethylammonium chloride (CPTC) were used as raw materials to prepare an antibacterial cotton fabric with excellent laundering durability. CMC was first anchored to the surface of cotton fiber via esterification between the carboxyl groups of CMC and the hydroxyl groups of the cellulose molecules on the cotton fiber surface, and then the CPTC was linked to the CMC chains via amidation to the amino groups of the grafted CMC chains. The antibacterial tests showed that the bacteriostatic reduction rate (BR) of the finished cotton fabric against S. aureus and E. coli was above 99.9%, and the BR value of modified cotton fabric remained above 99.9% even after 120 laundering cycles. The results of cytotoxicity, vapor transmissibility, and tensile strength of the fabric samples, as well as the evaluation of water absorption and flexibility show that the modified cotton fabrics are safe and comfortable.

Development of Antimicrobial Microcapsules of Saffron Petal Essential Oil by Condensation Method and Its Excellent Binding on Cotton Fibers

Su Liu,Liuxin Shi,Mengyun Liu,Wei Chen,Qiang Cheng,Xiuli Song

In recent years, textiles with antimicrobial properties have attracted more and more attention. As natural antimicrobial agents, essential oils’ potential application value lies in their ability to provide textiles with antimicrobial functions. In this paper, organic solvent extraction (n-hexane, petroleum ether, ethanol) and steam distillation were used to extract saffron petal essential oil (SPEO). It was found that organic solvent extraction (ethanol) had the highest extraction rate and the most apparent bacteriostatic effect. SPEO-Ms were prepared using the composite condensation method with gelatin and chitosan. The microstructure, encapsulation efficiency, slow-release performance, infrared spectrum, and thermal stability of the SPEO-Ms were evaluated. The results showed that the microencapsulated essential oil had good bacteriostatic properties. Antimicrobial cotton fabric was prepared by impregnating microcapsules onto cotton fibers. The effects of the microcapsules’ concentration on the whiteness, air permeability, moisture permeability, and bacteriological inhibition of the fabric were investigated. The results revealed that SPEO-Ms have the potential to be used as a new antimicrobial agent in textiles. Keywords:saffron flower petal essential oil;microcapsule;antimicrobial cotton fabric;cotton fabric

Remarkable durability of the antibacterial function achieved via a coordination effect of Cu(II) ion and chitosan grafted on cotton fibers

Xiao Yuanxiang,Shen Guokang,Zheng Weishi,Fu Jiajia,Fu Feiya,Hu Xinyue,Jin Ziyi,Liu Xiangdong

We report here a simple and effective method applying a combination of chitosan (Cs) and Cu(II) ion to fabricate antibacterial cotton fabric with a remarkable durability against laundering. The antibacterial fabric was prepared by grafting Cs onto cotton fibers through a succinic acid linkage, following with loading Cu(II) ions by the coordination effect. The modified fabric achieved 100% bacterial reduction (BR) rates against both S. aureus and E. coli , and remarkable laundering durability was confirmed even after 100 washing cycles. Moreover, longer Cs chains grafted on fibers shown enhanced chelating capability with Cu(II) ions. When compared to copper nanoparticles, our strategy has advantages in terms of low dosage of Cu(II), reasonable cost, simple process, reduced environmental hazards, and improved antibacterial durability. This work is believed to be a practical strategy for developing environment-friendly and cost-effective long-acting antibacterial cotton textiles.

Lifan Li,Deming Zhou,Jiapeng Ye,Kun Luan,Zaixing Zhang,Lingxiao Jing,Tonghua Zhang

Long-lasting antibacterial properties in cotton fabric address microbial growth, odor formation, and hygiene issues, which are common drawbacks at the usage of natural fibers. Recent cotton market demands durable, eco-friendly solutions that enhance fabric longevity and performance in various applications. This study presents the development of a durable and multifunctional antibacterial cotton fabric achieved through a feasible and cost-effective “one-bath” impregnation process. A N -halamine precursor, featuring a terminal chlorine group (TD@Cl), was chemically bonded to the hydroxyl groups of cotton fabric, imparting enhanced antibacterial properties along with flame-retardancy, hydrophobicity, and self-cleaning capabilities. The TD@Cl treated fabric, designated as COTD, demonstrated exceptional antibacterial efficacy, exhibiting over 99.99% efficacy against both S. aureus and E. coli , with rapid bactericidal action within 3 min of contact. Notably, the COTD-Cl fabric maintained its antibacterial performance even after 40 washing cycles. Flame-retardancy tests revealed a 43.4% reduction in total heat release (THR) compared to untreated cotton. The fabric exhibited superior hydrophobicity and self-cleaning properties. Its air permeability and water vapour permeability are also discussed. These results highlight the potential of this efficient method to produce durable, multifunctional cotton fabrics suitable for a wide range of practical usages, such like garments, decoration and furniture etc.

Durably antibacterial cotton fabrics coated by protamine via Schiff base linkages

Maoshuang Chen,Jianan ShangGuan,Junyi Jiang,Jingjing Jiang,Fengjuan Li,Qingqi Dong,Hongyan Diao,Xiangdong Liu

The development of antibacterial cotton fabrics with an overall performance is critical but remains challenging. In this study, we propose a facile method to prepare durable antibacterial cotton fabric without significant sacrifices of wearing comfortability. Cotton fabric is firstly oxidated to obtain dialdehyde groups, then treated with PM molecules to establish a PM coating on the fiber surfaces via Schiff base linkages. The resultant cotton fabrics show durably antibacterial activity, realizing high bacterial reduction rates against both E. coli and S. aureus higher than 99.99 %, and offering remarkable durabilities tolerable 50 washing cycles and 500 rubbing times. These fabrics also show reliable safety for human skin that proofed by a series of cytotoxicity tests with positive results. This work demonstrates an example of versatile strategy to impart effective antibacterial function with durable activity to cotton textiles, showing great potential for practical applications in functional textile fields.

Durably Antibacterial Cotton Fabric Prepared by a Combination of Betaine and Carboxymethyl Chitosan

Xiao Yuanxiang,Duan Panpan,Shen Guokang,Zheng Weishi,Fu Jiajia,Xu Qingbo,Fu Feiya,Liu Xiangdong

A simple pad-dry-cure modification process is proposed to prepare the antibacterial cotton fabrics with durable antibacterial properties. Two natural antibacterial materials, carboxymethyl chitosan (CMC) and betaine (Bet), were grafted on cotton fiber surface to achieve the goal. FTIR-ATR and XPS results reveal that esterification and amidation reactions have taken place between the CMC, Bet, and the cellulose chains on the surface of cotton fibers. Antibacterial evaluation results confirm the antibacterial capability and the durability of the modified fabrics. The bacterial reduction (BR) rates against Escherichia coli ( E. coli ) and Staphylococcus aureus ( S. aureus ) are higher than 99.99 % and can be kept at a level higher than 95 % even after 20 washing cycles. According to the XRD results presented, the entire modification process wreaks little damage to the crystalline structure of the cotton fabric. Especially, both the water vapor permeability and water absorption capability were improved (371.1 g/m 2 /d and 198 %, respectively) when compared to the original cotton fabric. This work provided a new way to fabricate antimicrobial cotton fabric using bio-based compounds, displaying great application potential in the antibacterial textile industry.

Omnipotent antibacterial cotton fabrics with superhydrophobic and photothermal properties

Zitong Wang,Huajing Cheng,Rong Chen,Ming-xi Wang,Nan Jiang,Zhong Lu,Hao Yang

Due to the outbreak of global public health emergency, antibacterial fabrics such as face masks are in great demand. However, common antibacterial fabrics cannot kill bacteria in minutes and they are easy to be contaminated and lost biological activity. In this work, omnipotent antibacterial cotton fabrics with superhydrophobic and photothermal properties are developed by the combination of dopamine with copper sulfide (CuS) and silver nanoparticles on cotton fabrics, and post-modification with PDMS. The prepared PDA/CuS/Ag/PDMS composite fabrics were characterized by FE-SEM, XRD, EDS, ATR-FTIR and water contact angle. The photothermal antimicrobial properties of the fabrics were evaluated with Staphylococcus aureus ( S. aureus ) and Escherichia coli ( E. coil ) under near-infrared light (NIR) illumination or not. The results showed that the obtained superhydrophobic PDA/CuS/Ag/PDMS composite fabrics had excellent water repellence and self-cleaning effect. Regardless of NIR irradiation or not, PDA/CuS/Ag/PDMS composite fabrics possessed high antibacterial activity against S. aureus and E. coil , which proves their omnipotent antibacterial property.

Facile Fabrication of Durable Antibacterial Cotton Fabric Realized by Thioglycolic Acid and Silver Nanoparticles

Xu Qingbo,Ke Xiating,Zhang Yanyan,Fu Feiya,Liu Xiangdong

In this study, durable antibacterial cotton fabrics were prepared by a simple two-step impregnation method. Firstly, thioglycolic acid (TGA) was grafted onto cotton fabric via esterification with the hydroxyl groups of cellulose, then silver nanoparticles (Ag NPs) were immobilized on the cotton fabric surface via coordination bonds with the TGA thiol groups. As a result, the mean size of Ag NPs coating on the cotton fabric is around 74 nm, and these functionalized cotton fabrics show superior antibacterial properties and excellent laundering durability. After withstand 50 laundering cycles, the obtained cotton fabrics still showed outstanding bacterial reduction rates (BR) against both S. aureus and E. coli , and the rates are all higher than 97 %. Therefore, this method to prepare antibacterial cotton fabric shows great potential applications in socks, cosmetic, and medical textiles.

Xu QingBo,Ke XiaTing,Cai DongRong,Zhang YanYan,Fu FeiYa,Endo Takeshi,Liu XiangDong

The main purpose of this work was to obtain durable antimicrobial cotton textiles functionalized with l -cysteine (Cys) and silver nanoparticles (Ag NPs). Cys molecules were covalently linked to cotton fibers via esterification with the cellulose hydroxyl groups, and the Ag NPs tightly adhered to the fiber surface via coordination bonds with the Cys thiol groups. As a result, the Ag NPs coating on the cotton fabric showed an excellent antibacterial function with an outstanding laundering durability. Even after 90 consecutive laundering tests, the modified cotton fabrics still showed satisfactory bacterial reduction rates against both Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli , and the rates were are all higher than 94%. These findings will allow for broader applications of antimicrobial cotton textiles with a decreased safety risk and lower environmental impact due to the Ag NPs.

Nonleaching Antimicrobial Cotton Fabrics Finished with Hyperbranched Polylysine

Ming Liu,Xiao Liu,Hui Liu,Miaomiao Han,Shengxiang Ji

The choice of the antimicrobial agent and finishing process is very important for the activity, durability, and safety of antimicrobial fabrics. Here, a novel antimicrobial cotton fabric (HPL-CF) was constructed by covalently bonding an antimicrobial agent, hyperbranched polylysine (HPL), onto the surface of a cotton fabric (CF) pretreated with a silane coupling agent, 3-chloropropyltrimethoxysilane (CPTMS). The multiple amino groups contained in the periphery of HPL make it possible to react with the CF to form multiple bonds, which is beneficial to improve the durability and safety of HPL-CFs. The obtained HPL-CFs exhibited excellent antimicrobial activities against Escherichia coli (E. coli, Gram-negative bacteria), Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus, Gram-positive bacteria), and Candida albicans (C. albicans, fungi) even when the CF was treated with HPL solution at the concentration of 0.5 wt %. HPL2.0-CFs maintained 98, >99, and >99% of antimicrobial ratios for E. coli, S. aureus, and C. albicans, respectively, after 50 equiv of domestic laundering cycles, surpassing the requirements of the AAA class. The halo method, cell compatibility, and skin irritation assays all prove the fine safety of HPL-CFs. This work demonstrates the great advantages of applying HPL in the antimicrobial finishing of fabrics.
