Most polymers and composites suffer from high friction and wear due to their inherent lack of self-lubrication under dry sliding friction. Herein, the lamellar Ti 3 SiC 2 MAX material is prepared via vacuum sintering of a powder mixture containing Ti, Si, and TiC in the molar ratio of 1:1.1:1.8 at 1500°C under a pressure of 30 MPa for 2 h. Combined with a soft graphite phase (5 wt%), self-lubricating PEEK/Graphite/Ti 3 SiC 2 (PG-T) composites are successfully prepared, dependent on Ti 3 SiC 2 (5 and 15 wt%) as a hard reinforced phase and lubrication additive. PG-T composites are fabricated via a multistep compounding approach using a twin-screw extruder. The incorporation of Ti 3 SiC 2 and graphite within the PEEK matrix manifests a highly pronounced synergistic effect, which not only facilitates effective lubrication but also significantly enhances the load-bearing capability, thereby effectively circumventing direct contact between the counterface and the polymeric matrix. The sliding tests are conducted on the pins (diameter: 6.0 mm, height: 17.0 mm) and friction pair (45#steel, roughness Ra: 148 nm) under dry friction. In terms of PV-condition (up to 6 MPa and 3 m/s) (PV is a parameter that reflects the load-bearing capacity of polymer materials, which is defined by multi-plying the pressure P by the sliding speed V), PG5-T15 exhibits self-lubricating properties, featured by an average coefficient of friction (ACOF) as low as 0.119 for the pin-plate test and a specific wear rate (SWR) of only 0.58 × 10 −6 mm 3 /Nm. Meanwhile, PG-T composites present excellent thermal properties based on the thermal expansion coefficients (CTEs) and storage moduli (G′) during friction and wear. Considering the practical applications of tribo-composites, these findings highlight the potential of PG-T composite as a candidate for demanding tribological applications.

PurposeThis study aims to reveal the tribological mechanism of synergistic effect between MoDTC and P-containing additives in aluminum-based grease.Design/methodology/approachThe authors prepared a molybdenum dialkyl dithiocarbamate (MoDTC) and revealed the tribological mechanism of synergistic effect between MoDTC and P-containing additives in aluminum-based grease by combining with ZDDP and P-containing and S-free additives.FindingsThe MoDTC the authors prepared has good friction-reducing and anti-wear properties in aluminum-based grease and has an obvious synergistic effect with ZDDP. MoDTC and ZDDP have a significant synergistic effect on the tribological properties in aluminum-based grease, mainly because of the formation of phosphates and metaphosphates as well as more MoS2in the friction film. P element plays a facilitating role in the chemical conversion of MoDTC to MoS2.Originality/valueThe experiments of MoDTC with tributyl phosphate and trimethylphenyl phosphate confirm that the P element plays a facilitating role in the chemical conversion of MoDTC into MoS2.Peer reviewThe peer review history for this article is available at: https://publons.com/publon/10.1108/ILT-12-2023-0410

For realizing friction reduction and wear resistance across a wide temperature range, this study proposes a novel interface structure combining micro-arc oxidation (MAO) coatings on titanium alloy with MoSe 2 nanoparticles. Focus on investigating the tribological behavior of this structure across a wide temperature range (RT–500 °C) and its response to temperature. Through detailed characterization, the friction-reducing and lubricating mechanisms during wear were elucidated. The results demonstrate that this structure consistently exhibits friction reduction and lubrication capabilities, with low-shear MoSe 2 particles and molybdenum oxides enhancing the micro-pocket structure. This research provides valuable insights for developing integrated self-lubricating interfaces and improving the high-temperature tribological performance of MAO coatings.

To adapt to the complex application of polyurethane bearings, it is feasible to improve the tribological performance of single polyurethane-based friction materials through the synergistic effect produced by multi-component-lubricating fillers. In this context, rather than using tungsten disulfide (WS2), which has demonstrated excellent self-lubricating performance as a lubricating oil additive, this paper proposes that WS2and single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) can be designed for addition into a polyether 4,4′-diphenylmethane diisocyanate (MDI) polyurethane matrix as self-lubricating fillers so as to explore the synergistic effect of micro- and nano-lubricating fillers on the tribological performance of polyurethane matrix materials. Through a series of characterizations and tests, it was found that the dispersion of two-component-lubricating additives in a polyurethane matrix is improved when the ratio of WS2to SWNTs is roughly 2:1. In this case, the tribological performance of polyurethane matrix composites is more satisfactory than at other ratios. In addition, compared with the blank sample, the tribological performance of the synergistically modified polyurethane composites under dry friction is more significantly improved with the increase in contact load, while there is no significant improvement under water lubrication. Aside from contributing to the idea of exploring the synergistic effect of WS2and other micro or nanofillers, this method also opens up the possibility of practically applying WS2in the field of friction. Keywords:polyurethane elastomer;WS2;SWNTs;synergistic effect;tribological performance

Pulsed magnetic field treatment was applied to the cemented carbide (WC-12Co) for enhancing its friction-reducing and anti-wear effect under different friction conditions , including dry, distilled water and nano-Fe 3 O 4 particles additive friction. The results show that the friction reduction and anti-wear effect could be enhanced with pulsed magnetic field applied . Especially, with nano-Fe 3 O 4 magnetofluid lubrication , the wear volume of workpiece is reduced by 26.8% and the average friction coefficient is reduced by 12.4%. The effect of the pulsed magnetic field on tribological properties is closely related to the oxidation and remanence. It can promote oxidation and forms a protective layer on the friction pair . Furthermore, it can make magnetofluid gather and amplify the lubrication.

Boron nitride (BN) shows obvious anti-wear performance as additives in lubricants, ceramics and polymers, however, the strong interlayer interactions lead to the weak anti-friction effect compared to those of carbon-based materials. In this work, we obtained the hydroxylated BN (BNO) via annealing the bulk material in air at high temperature. Utilizing the self-polymerization reactions of dopamine (DA) on the hydroxyls of BNO, the polydopamine (PDA) modified BNO (BNO-PDA) was formed, which has a good dispersity in water. The tribological tests indicate that both the hydroxylation and PDA modification can effectively lower the coefficient of friction (COF) and wear rate of the BN as additives in water, but the letter seems to present lower COF values when the testing time is increased. We also studied the influence of polymerization time on the tribological behaviors of BNO-PDA, and it was concluded that the 6 h modification gained the lowest wear rate and the 24 h modification yielded the lowest average COF value. It is believed that the favorable tribological performance of BNO-PDA as additives in water lubrication is resulted from the improved dispersity and the formation of organic layers on the surface of BN.

The synergistic effect of nanoparticles can effectively improve the tribological performances of base oils. In this study, a novel lubricant additive by embedding 2D FeOCl on 2D Zn − MOF was reported for the first time in order to boost the tribological performances of polyethylene glycol (PEG200). The FeOCl/Zn − MOF prepared by a facile microwave assisted strategy was found to be a typical flower-like appearance, where FeOCl nanosheets decorated on the surface of Zn − MOF sheets. Owing to the electron transfer and synergistic effect between FeOCl and Zn − MOF, the novel FeOCl/Zn − MOF effectively reduced the coefficient of friction by 48 % and wear scar diameter by 88 % at the loading of 0.4 wt% FeOCl/Zn − MOF in the base oil. The work suggests the face-to-face combination of FeOCl and Zn − MOF for enhanced tribological performances, representing a new strategy to prepare efficient lubricant additives using assembled 2D nanomaterials.

As a nanoscale carbon material, carbon spheres (CS) are expected to achieve ideal lubrication performance by reducing direct contact between friction pairs and bearing loads. In this work, 2D Cu-MOFs surface modified (CS@Cu(BDC)) CS was added to the base oil, which exhibited a remarkable reduction in friction coefficient and wear rate (62.2%, 33.9%), the width of the friction pair wear marks was decreased by 30.8% relative to the base oil. The improvement in performance can be attributed to the polishing, repairing, filling and tribo-film forming effects of CS@Cu(BDC). This work provided an effective strategy for diversifying the surface structure of CS and opened new avenues for the development of a new generation of green and efficient lubricant additives .

Due to the long-standing use of MAX phase materials since the 1960s and the emergence of MXenes in 2011, both are celebrated for their extraordinary mechano-tribological properties, including layered structures, high mechanical strength , and thermal conductivity . Nevertheless, there remains a crucial research gap in comprehensively comparing their tribological performance under solid lubrication , underscoring the need for an in-depth investigation. To close this research gap, we deposited MAX phase and MXene coatings by spray-coating on stainless-steel substrates. Subsequently, we evaluated their tribological properties, deciphered the underlying mechanisms using linear-reciprocating tribometry and high-resolution material characterizations. Our results demonstrated that the MXene coatings surpass the MAX phase coating in friction reduction by 81.82 %. In terms of wear depth, MXene coating has shown a notably reduced depth compared to both the reference steel sample and the MAX phase coating. Advanced tribochemical analysis indicates that MXenes' superior tribological performance is endorsed by their ability to form a thick, patchy-like transferlayer on the counterbody, which results from their ability to shear and delaminate under acting contact stress. Our study offers a framework for future investigations into utilizing MXene-based materials in tribological applications.

Novel two-dimensional (2D) Nb 2 C nanosheets were successfully prepared through a simple lultrasonic and magnetic stirring treatment from the original accordion-like powder. To further study their water-lubrication properties and deal with common oxidation problems, Nb2C nanosheets with different oxidation degrees were prepared and achieved long-term stability in deionized water. Scanning electron microscope (SEM), transmission electron microscope (TEM), scanning probe microscope (SPM), X-ray powder diffraction (XRD), Raman, and X-ray photoelectron spectrometer (XPS) experiments were utilized to characterize the structure, morphology, and dispersion of Nb 2 C nanosheets with different degrees of oxidation. The tribological behaviors of Nb 2 C with different degrees of oxidation as additives for water lubrication were characterized using a UMT-3 friction testing machine. The wear scars formed on the 316 steel surface were measured using three-dimensional (3D) laser scanning confocal microscopy. The tribological results showed that a moderately oxidized Nb 2 C nanosheet, which owned the composition of Nb 2 C/Nb 2 O 5 /C, displayed excellent tribological performance, with the friction coefficient (COF) decreasing by 90.3% and a decrease in the wear rate by 73.1% compared with pure water. Combining the TEM and Raman spectra, it was shown that Nb 2 O 5 nanoparticles filled in the worn zone, and the layered Nb 2 C and C were adsorbed into the surface of the friction pair to form a protective lubricating film. This combined action resulted in an excellent lubricating performance.

MXene is a new two-dimensional (2D) material with excellent physical and chemical properties. However, the MXene nanosheets have high surface energy and exhibit poor dispersibility and stability in oil, owing to the presence of ‒OH, ‒O, and ‒F functional groups on the surface. Herein, 2D Ti 3 C 2 MXene material was chemically modified with tetradecylphosphonic acid (TDPA). Through the condensation reaction of the phosphoric acid groups with hydroxyl groups on the Ti 3 C 2 surface, a modified Ti 3 C 2 nanosheet (TDPA-Ti 3 C 2 ) was obtained. We dispersed TDPA-Ti 3 C 2 into castor oil to study its tribological properties. Compared with pure castor oil, the coefficient of friction (COF) and wear rate (W r ) of castor oil with 0.1 wt% TDPA-Ti 3 C 2 are reduced by 27.9% and 55.1%, respectively. The possible friction-reducing and anti-wear mechanisms of TDPA-Ti 3 C 2 in castor oil were explored by analyzing the surface morphologies of the wear scars. The improvement of lubrication performance is attributed to the deposition and adsorption of TDPA-Ti 3 C 2 on the friction surface during the lubrication process, forming a physical transfer film to prevent direct contact with the friction pair. The research results show that the modified Ti 3 C 2 has broad application prospects in lubrication and tribology .

Layered sodium silicates β-Na2Si2O5 and kanemite were synthesized via facile methods under mild conditions. The tribological properties of β-Na2Si2O5 and kanemite utilized as additives in lithium grease were evaluated with a four-ball tester under different experimental conditions. The maximum nonseizure load value of 5.0 wt % β-Na2Si2O5 grease jumped from 353 N (the base grease) to 1568 N. However, 5.0 wt % MoS2 grease could only reach 617 N under the same conditions. The SEM and EDS results confirm that a protective film mainly composed of sodium silicates was formed on the worn surface during the friction process. The structural stability of β-Na2Si2O5 and kanemite after the wear test was studied by XRD. It was found that a loss of interlamellar water causes the layer structure of kanemite to collapse during a long-duration wear test. The layered structure of β-Na2Si2O5 is stable, and its tribological properties are better than those of kanemite.
