Several Pestalotiopsis -like species cause gray blight disease in tea plants, resulting in severe tea production losses. However, systematic and comprehensive research on the diversity, geographical distribution, and pathogenicity of pathogenic species associated with tea plants in China is limited. In this study, 168 Pestalotiopsis -like isolates were obtained from diseased tea plant leaves from 13 primary tea-producing provinces and cities in China. Based on a multilocus (internal transcribed spacer, translation elongation factor 1-α, and β-tubulin gene region) phylogenetic analysis coupled with an assessment of conidial characteristics, 20 Neopestalotiopsis unclassified isolates, seven Pestalotiopsis species, including two novel ( Pestalotiopsis menhaiensis and Pestalotiopsis sichuanensis ), four known ( Pestalotiopsis camelliae , Pestalotiopsis chamaeropis , Pestalotiopsis kenyana , and Pestalotiopsis rhodomyrtus ) and one indistinguishable species, and three Pseudopestalotiopsis species, including two known ( Pseudopestalotiopsis camelliae-sinensis and Pseudopestalotiopsis chinensis ) and one indistinguishable species, were identified. This study is the first to evaluate Pestalotiopsis chamaeropis on tea plants in China. The geographical distribution and pathogenicity tests showed Pseudopestalotiopsis camelliae-sinensis to be the dominant cause of gray blight of tea plants in China. In vitro antifungal assays demonstrated that theobromine not only derepressed mycelial growth of the 29 representative isolates but also increased their growth. Correlation analysis revealed a linear positive relationship between the mycelial growth rate and pathogenicity ( P = 0.0148).

Species of Sporocadaceae have often been reported as plant pathogens, endophytes or saprophytes and are commonly isolated from a wide range of plant hosts. The isolated fungi were studied through a complete examination, based on multilocus phylogenies from combined datasets of ITS/ tub2 / tef1 , in conjunction with morphological characteristics. Nine strains were isolated from Ficus microcarpa , Ilex chinensis and Schima superba in China which represented four species, viz. , Monochaetia schimae sp. nov. , Neopestalotiopsis haikouensis sp. nov. , Neopestalotiopsis piceana and Pestalotiopsis licualicola . Neopestalotiopsis piceana was a new country record for China and first host record from Ficus macrocarpa . Pestalotiopsis licualicola was first report from Ilex chinensis in China.

Two facultatively aerobic, Gram-stain-positive, rod-shaped, endospore-forming, endophytic bacteria, designated SGZ-1009Tand SGZ-1014, were isolated from the plantPennisetumsp. Strain SGZ-1009Tgrew at 5–50 °C, pH 4.5–11.0 and tolerated up to 4.5% NaCl (w/v), while strain SGZ-1014 exhibited growth at a temperature range of 10–50 °C, pH range 4.5–11.0 and tolerated up to 4.5% NaCl. Phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequences indicated that these two strains belong to the genusPaenibacillus, closely related to the reference type strain ofPaenibacillus wenxiniaeDSM 100576T(similarity of 97.0%). The genomic relatedness values for both strains, SGZ-1009Tand SGZ-1014, compared to their closest reference strainP. wenxiniaeDSM 100576T, were 81.6% for average nucleotide identity and 26.0% for digital DNA–DNA hybridization, suggesting strain SGZ-1009Trepresents a novel species. The genomic DNA G+C content of strain SGZ-1009Twas 46.4%. Both strains shared anteiso-C15:0(55.9%) as the predominant fatty acid, menaquinone-7 as the major respiratory quinone and diphosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylglycerol and phosphatidylethanolamine as the major polar lipids. Based on these results, strains SGZ-1009Tand SGZ-1014 represent a novel species ofPaenibacillus, for which the namePaenibacillus campisp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is SGZ-1009T(=MCCC 1K08892T=GDMCC 1.4280T=KCTC 43677T=JCM 36670T).

Inocybe is a cosmopolitan genus of ectomycorrhizal fungi within the family Inocybaceae. Members of this genus are recognized as a group of toxic mushrooms linked to poisoning incidents worldwide. Clarifying this species diversity and toxin profiles within this genus is critical for both taxonomy and public health. In this study, we describe two newly identified species, I. bicystidiata sp. nov. and I. microcarpa sp. nov., based on phylogenetic analysis and morphological evidence. Phylogenetically, the two new species belong to I. sect. Leptocybe. Inocybe bicystidiata is characterized by nodulose basidiospores with saddle-shaped projections and the coexistence of thick-walled pleurocystidia and thin-walled paracystidia on the lamellar side. Inocybe microcarpa is characterized by very small basidiomata, spinose basidiospores with forked projections, absence of pleurocystidia, and thin-walled cheilocystidia. Ecologically, both of these new species occur in tropical rainforests dominated by Parashorea chinensis, which is considered as their presumed host. In addition, new geographic data are reported for three previously documented species of I. sect. Leptocybe, I. acutata, I. juji, and I. peppa, based on newly obtained specimens. Comprehensive ultra-performance liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (UPLC–MS)/MS toxin screening revealed no detectable levels of muscarine, psilocybin, psilocin, bufotenine, or baeocystin in 10 examined species of sect. Leptocybe. This contrasts with the known toxin-producing Inocybe lineages, suggesting a divergent secondary metabolism in this clade.

Bacterial leaf blight (BLB), caused by Xanthomonas oryzae pv. oryzae (Xoo), is one of the most severe bacterial diseases in rice. The current BLB-prevention strategy depends on chemical antimicrobials. The biological control methods have gained considerable attention. Among them, Streptomyces are particularly promising candidates due to their ability to produce diverse natural antimicrobial and plant-growth-promoting metabolites. In this study, we isolated a Streptomyces strain HSW2009 from the rice rhizosphere. This strain displayed significant antagonistic activity against Xoo. The antagonistic metabolite was extracted and purified from the HSW2009 culture. High-performance liquid chromatography-mass chromatography and nuclear magnetic resonance analyses revealed that the active compound is Piericidin A1, a member of the piericidin family metabolites containing a 4-pyridinol core linked with a methylated polyketide side chain. Piericidin A1 was shown to protect rice from Xoo infection in the microclimate chamber. The strain HSW2009 produced pale yellow aerial mycelia on the agar plate of the International Streptomyces Project-2 medium. Its cellular morphology conformed to that typically observed in the genus Streptomyces . Phylogenetic analysis of 16S rRNA gene sequences showed that HSW2009 was closely related to Streptomyces zagrosensis , S. youssoufiensis , and S. varsoviensis . HSW2009 displayed a unique DNA profile in BOX-PCR fingerprinting analysis and had a genome size of 8,806,972 bp, with a 72.83% G + C content. Average nucleotide identity analysis and digital DNA–DNA hybridization using the Type Strain Genome Server supported HSW2009 as a novel Streptomyces sp. It was therefore proposed as Streptomyces shaowuensis sp. nov., type strain HSW2009.

Two novel aerobic, rod-shaped, motile bacterial strains, designated as strains sgz302251 T and sgz5001026 T , were both isolated from paddy soils. 16S rRNA gene sequences analysis revealed that strain sgz302251 T exhibited 98.3% similarity with its closest reference strain Paenibacillus vietnamensis N4 T , while strain sgz5001026 T had the highest similarity of 97.5% to Ectobacillus polymachus KACC 18242 T . The average nucleotide identity (ANI) and digital DNA-DNA hybridization (dDDH) values between strains sgz302251 T , sgz5001026 T and their closest reference strains were 86.0% and 21.2%, 84.9% and 22.9%, respectively. The genomic DNA G + C contents of sgz302251 T and sgz5001026 T were 63.4% and 68.8%, respectively. Strain sgz302251 T grew at 20–37 °C (optimum 30 °C), pH 5.0–9.0 (optimum 6.5–7.5) and tolerated 0–1.0% NaCl (optimum 0.5%, w/v), while strain sgz5001026 T grew at 4–45 °C (optimum 37 °C), pH 5.0–9.0 (optimum 6.0) and 0–0.5% NaCl (optimum 0%). The quinone in both strains was MK-7 and major polar lipids were diphosphatidylglycerol (DPG), phosphatidylethanolamine (PE) and phosphatidylglycerol (PG). The main fatty acids (> 5%) of strain sgz302251 T were anteiso-C 15:0 , anteiso-C 17:0 , and C 16:0 , whereas strain sgz5001026 T included anteiso-C 15:0 , iso-C 15:0 , iso-C 16:0 and iso-C 14:0 . Based on the above evidence, the proposed names of the two novel species are Paenibacillus praedii sp. nov. (type strain sgz302251 T = MCCC 1K09633 T = KCTC 43808 T ), Ectobacillus soli sp. nov. (type strain sgz5001026 T = MCCC 1K09373 T = KCTC 25903 T ), respectively.
