Li metal is regarded as the most promising anode for lithium-based batteries due to its extremely high theoretical capacity and the lowest working potential. However, dendrite caused by uneven Li deposition inhibits its practical application. Here we propose a new concept of utilizing amorphous metallic nucleation seeds to induce the uniform deposition of Li. Amorphous 3 °C liquid metal coated on MXene framework is selected as an example for deep investigation. The results indicate that amorphous liquid metal nucleation seeds are stable against MXene and can induce isotropic nucleation and uniform growth of Li. The Coulombic efficiency and performance of symmetric cells are obviously improved both in ether-based and carbonate-based electrolyte under the regulation of amorphous liquid metal seeds. Full lithium metal cells with LiFePO 4 and crumpled MXene nanosheet encapsulated LiMn 2 O 4 cathodes also exhibit better electrochemical performance after modification. Additionally, the concept may be useful for developing other metal based anodes.

The metallic lithium (Li) is considered as the most promising anode material for high-energy batteries. Nevertheless, the uncontrollable growth of Li dendrite and unstable electrolyte/electrode interface still hinder the development of Li-based battery. In this work, a novel strategy has been proposed to stabilize Li anode by in-situ polymerizing polypyrrole (PPy) layer on Ni foam (PPy@Ni foam) as an artificial protective layer. The PPy protective layer can effectively decrease the contact between Li metal and electrolyte during cycling. In addition, the morphology characterization shows that the PPy layer can help the even Li deposition underneath the layer, leading to a dendrite-free Li anode. As a result, when deposited 2 mAh•cm −2 Li metal, the PPy@Ni foam can keep stable Coulombic efficiency (99%) during nearly 250 cycles, much better than the pure Ni foam (100 cycles). Even in the case of the Li capacity of 10 mAh•cm −2 , the stable cycling performance for 60 cycles can still be achieved. Furthermore, when assembled with LiFePO 4 material as the cathode for a full cell, the PPy@Ni foam can keep high capacity retention of 85.5% at 500 cycles. In our work, we provide a simple and effective method to enhance the electrochemical performances of Li metal-based batteries, and reveal a new avenue to design three-dimensional (3D) metallic current collector for protecting the Li metal anode.

Safety and high energy density have long restricted the large-scale practical application of lithium metal batteries because of the unbridled growth of lithium dendrites and the rapid deteriorating cycle performance of the LiNi0.8Co0.1Mn0.1O2 (NCM811) cathode. Herein, an additive of RbNO3 with multiple functions is proposed for dendrite-free NCM811 lithium metal batteries. Benefiting from the electrostatic shielding effect formed by Rb+ during the Li+ deposition process and the solvation effect of NO3– to regulate lithium deposition, a high Coulombic efficiency of 95.02% (compared with the low Coulombic efficiency of 89.37% in the blank electrolyte) is acquired in Li//Cu cells, and the uniform growth of the lithium metal deposition with a large strawberry-like morphology is achieved. Moreover, when a cathode of NCM811 matches with a lithium metal anode, an extraordinary capacity retention of 93.67% after 200 cycles with a high Coulombic efficiency of 99.7% in the electrolyte with the RbNO3 system (a capacity retention of 80.1% with a Coulombic efficiency of 98.0% for the blank electrolyte) is achieved at 1C. This work provides guidance for the development of high-efficiency additives with dual synergistic regulation effects of anions and cations for lithium metal batteries in the future.

Aluminum-ion batteries have attracted great interest in the grid-scale energy storage field due to their good safety, low cost and the high abundance of Al. However, Al anodes suffer from severe dendrite growth, especially at high deposition rates. Here, we report a simple strategy for constructing a highly reversible, dendrite-free, Al-based anode through directly introducing a solid-solution-based metal coating to a Zn foil substrate. Compared with Cu foil substrates and bare Al, a Zn foil substrate shows a lower nucleation barrier of Al deposition due to the intrinsic, definite solubility between Al and Zn. During Al deposition, a thin, solid-solution alloy phase is first formed on the surface of the Zn foil substrate and then guides the parallel growth of flake-like Al on Zn substrate. The well-designed, Zn-coated Al (Zn@Al) anode can effectively inhibit dendrite growth and alleviate the corrosion of the Al anode. The fabricated Zn@Al–graphite battery exhibits a high specific capacity of 80 mAh·g−1and an ultra-long lifespan over 10,000 cycles at a high current density of 20 A·g−1in low-cost molten salt electrolyte. This work opens a new avenue for the development of stable Al anodes and can provide insights for other metal anode protection.Keywords:aluminum-ion battery;metal coating;solid-solution alloy;dendrite-free anode

Aqueous zinc-ion batteries (ZIBs) have received much attention because of their high safety, low pollution, and satisfactory energy density (840 mAh g−1), which is important for the research of new energy storage devices. However, problems such as short cell cycle life and low coulombic efficiency (CE) of zinc (Zn) anodes due to disorderly growth of Zn dendrites and side reactions of hydrogen corrosion have delayed the practical application of ZIBs. In this work, a new “self-growth” method is proposed to build a robust and homogeneous three-dimensional (3D) nanoporous structure of tin (Sn)-coated Zn anodes (ZSN) in just 10 min by a simple and fast reaction, which can largely raise the surface area of the electrode plate. The ZSN not only provides abundant Zn nucleation sites, but also reduces the corrosion current, thus alleviating the self-corrosion of the electrolyte, reducing the occurrence of hydrogen precipitation side reactions, and effectively inhibiting the growth of Zn dendrites during cycling. Thus, a symmetric cell with a ZSN anode can be stabilized with very low voltage hysteresis (30 mV) for 480 h of stable plating/stripping cycles and can operate well for 200 h even at high current densities of 10 mA cm−2. Supercapacitors and button cells were assembled, respectively, to verify the performance of ZSN electrodes in different energy storage tools. The ZSN||AC supercapacitor exhibited superior capacity (75 mAh g−1) and high reversibility (98% coulombic efficiency) at a current density of 2 A g−1. With a MnVO (MVO) electrode as the cathode, the ZSN||MVO full cell presents excellent cycling stability with a capacity retention of 95.4% after 500 cycles at 2 A g−1, which far exceeds that of the bare Zn cell. Keywords:nanoporous anode;aqueous Zn-based battery;dendrite-free;3D metal versatile protective layer

As a promising candidate for the high energy density cells, the practical application of lithium-metal batteries (LMBs) is still extremely hindered by the uncontrolled growth of lithium (Li) dendrites. Herein, a facile strategy is developed that enables dendrite-free Li deposition by coating highly-lithiophilic amorphous SiO microparticles combined with high-binding polyacrylate acid (SiO@PAA) on polyethylene separators. A lithiated SiO and PAA (lithiated-SiO/PAA) protective layer with synergistic flexible and robust features is formed on the Li metal anode via the in situ reaction to offer outstanding interfacial stability during long-term cycles. By suppressing the formation of dead Li and random Li deposition, reducing the side reaction, and buffering the volume changes during the lithium deposition and dissolution, such a protective layer realizes a dendrite-free morphology of Li metal anode. Furthermore, sufficient ionic conductivity, uniform lithium-ion flux, and interface adaptability is guaranteed by the lithiated-SiO and Li polyacrylate acid. As a result, Li metal anodes display significantly enhanced cycling stability and coulombic efficiency in Li||Li and Cu||Li cells. When the composite separator is applied in a full cell with a carbonate-based electrolyte and LiNi 0.8 Mn 0.1 Co 0.1 O 2 cathode, it exhibits three times longer lifespan than control cell at current density of 5 C.

Aqueous zinc-ion batteries (AZIBs) use zinc metal as anodes are expected to be used for large-scale energy storage due to their good safety, low cost, environmental friendliness, etc. However, the zinc dendrite growth and associated side reactions seriously cause low Coulomb efficiency and reduce the cycle life of AZIBs, finally hampering further practical application. Herein, the γ-poly(glutamic acid) (γ-PGA)/aramid nanofibers (ANFs)/MXene (PAM) protection layer was designed toward a dendrite-free Zn metal anode. The PAM layer with a three-dimensional (3D) network formed by strong hydrogen bonding interactions effectively inhibits the growth of zinc dendrites, corrosion of the electrolyte, and hydrogen precipitation due to the reduced nucleation overpotential, which facilitates uniform galvanization/de-zincification. At a current density of 0.1 mA·cm–2 and 0.1 mAh·cm–2, the cycle life of PAM@Zn//PAM@Zn symmetric cell could extend to 3500 h. Meanwhile, the PAM@Zn//V2O5 full cell could also exhibit a capacity retention of 82.49% after 1500 cycles at 1 C. This strategy of designing a polymer-based composite protection layer by integrating the advantages of different materials opens up more possibilities for the development of a dendrite-free Zn anode.

The plentiful and renewable nature of iodine confers metal-iodine batteries (MIBs) a benefit in the advancement of energy storage technology with high energy and power densities. However, dendrite growth and susceptibility to electrolyte corrosion not only result in low anode utilization but also severely affect battery stability. This paper introduces an ammonium-iodine batteries (AIBs) structure that leverages the inertness of organic materials to iodide ions, thereby avoiding the electrolyte corrosion issues commonly found in the metal anodes of traditional MIBs. Additionally, the use of a non-metallic anode eliminates the impact of dendrite growth on battery stability and increases the anode utilization rate. Because of these features, AIBs attain a high specific capacity of 242mAh g −1 and preserve an 80.7 % capacity retention rate following approximately 2000 cycles at a current density of 10 A g −1 . We have also developed micro batteries and pouch cells to verify the feasibility of the structure. This work provides an innovative strategy for iodine batteries energy storage system.

Lithium metal anodes are an ideal candidate material for high energy density lithium-ion batteries. However, the uncontrollable growth of lithium dendrites and infinite volume expansion are a big challenge for the commercialization of lithium metal anodes. In order to realize dendrite-free lithium metal anodes, we prepared N-doped carbon/Si nanoparticles composite film modified Ni foam (NFSC) via a simple impregnation-calcination method as a three-dimensional (3D) lithiophilic skeleton for lithium metal anodes. NFSC has several advantages, including a 3D porous conductive structure, a large specific surface area, uniformly distributed abundant lithiophilic nitrogen-containing functional groups and Si nanoparticles providing abundant lithium nucleation sites. This reduces nucleation overpotential, facilitates uniform lithium deposition, suppresses the growth of lithium dendrites, and significantly improves the cycling stability of lithium metal anodes. As a result, NFSC exhibits low nucleation overpotential and the Li||NFSC half-cell maintains a high Coulombic efficiency (CE) of 99.15 % after 1000 cycles at 1 mA cm −2 and 1 mAh cm −2 . Moreover, the NFSC in a symmetric cell exhibits low polarization voltage of 18 mV together with an ultra-long cycling life of over 2000 h at 1 mA cm −2 and 1 mAh cm −2 . Furthermore, the full cell assembled with LiFePO 4 and NFSC@Li demonstrates superior rate performance and excellent long-term cycling stability. The long-term cycling stability exceeds 2500 cycles at 0.5C, far surpassing that of LiFePO 4 ||Li full cell (600 cycles). This work provides a simple and effective approach to achieve dendrite-free lithium metal anodes.

Zn powder (Zn-P)-based anodes are considered ideal candidates for Zn-based batteries because they enable a positive synergistic integration of safety and energy density. However, Zn-P-based anodes still experience easy corrosion, uncontrolled dendrite growth, and poor mechanical strength, which restrict their further application. Herein, a mixed ionic-electronic conducting scaffold is introduced into Zn-P to successfully fabricate anti-corrosive, flexible, and dendrite-free Zn anodes using a scalable tape-casting strategy. The as-established scaffold is characterized by robust flexibility, facile scale-up synthesis methodology, and exceptional anti-corrosive characteristics, and it can effectively homogenize the Zn 2+ flux during Zn plating/stripping, thus allowing stable Zn cycling. Benefiting from these comprehensive attributes, the as-prepared Zn-P-based anode provides superior electrochemical performance, including long-life cycling stability and high rate capability in practical coin and flexible pouch cells; thus, it holds great potential for developing advanced Zn-ion batteries. The findings of this study provide insights for a promising scalable pathway to fabricate highly efficient and reliable Zn-based anodes and will aid in the realization of advanced flexible energy-storage devices.

Aqueous aluminium-ion rechargeable batteries (AAIBs) have attracted lots of attention due to their high theoretical capacity, high volumetric energy density and low price. However, not many aqueous full batteries have been developed successfully due to the low standard reduction potential of Al3+ (−1.68 V vs. standard hydrogen electrode, lower than H+) in aqueous solutions. In this study, we highlight an inexpensive “water-in-salt” aqueous electrolyte (AlCl3·6H2O) that can expand the electrochemical stability window of AAIBs to roughly 4 V. We propose a full aluminum-ion battery (AIB) using such an aqueous electrolyte. Its capacity reached 165 mA h g−1 at 500 mA g−1 (3C), and it exhibited over 95% coulombic efficiency consistently over 1000 cycles. Moreover, the aqueous Al-ion battery we developed is low-cost (the electrolyte is roughly 2% the cost of traditional electrolyte of Al-ion batteries) and dendrite-free in the negative electrode throughout the tests.

Although rechargeable Al batteries attract interests due to their features of abundant Al source and high safety, the Al negative electrodes suffer from critical problems, including dendrite, corrosion, pulverization, non-recyclable Al wastes, etc. For addressing these challenges, here a novel liquid gallium is demonstrated for negative electrodes of Al batteries. The results show that the liquid gallium negative electrode enables the reversible alloying/dealloying between Al and Ga. Remarkably, the essential problems in the solid Al negative electrodes, including dendrite, corrosion and pulverization, would be well avoided attributed to the liquid state of the Ga electrode during cycling. In addition to the enhanced stable cycling performance, Ga negative electrode is also recyclable, allowing the cycled Ga for further presenting stable cycling in the re-assembled batteries, and which is helpful for its practical application. The results in the present work open a precedent way to develop the advanced negative electrode with dendrite-free, corrosion resistant and recyclable features and advantages for various types of rechargeable batteries.
