Oil-water separation is a critical challenge in current environmental remediation and industrial production, urgently requiring the development of innovative materials with high efficiency, selectivity and sustainability. In this study, a facile aqueous media dual-silane modification approach is employed to functionalize the wood membrane, thereby preparing a hydrophobic FS-AS@Wood filter. The FS-AS@Wood achieves a stable water contact angle of 140° to 144°, which repels the water and selectively allows oil to pass through. FS-AS@Wood retains exceptional hydrophobicity even when subjected to mechanical and chemical damage, such as continuous sandpaper abrasion and exposure to strong acids and bases, while demonstrating self-cleaning properties. FS-AS@Wood exhibits excellent oil-water interface selectivity, achieving a separation efficiency of 97.8–98.5 % at a flux of 2000–2400 L m −2 h −1 when processing heavy oil-water mixtures, and maintaining high efficiency and stability even after 40 cyclic operations. For light oil-water mixtures, the adsorption capacity reaches 4–7 times its weight. This study shows that FS-AS@Wood is a promising material for treating oil contaminants from different fields.

Manufacturing durable wood membranes that demonstrate both high efficiency and ultra-high flux for continuous oil-water separation utilizing scalable and cost-effective processes remains a serious challenge. In this study, a facile two-step approach is employed to prepare a novel superhydrophobic/oleophilic wood-based MOF (metal-organic framework) membrane. This method involves in-situ anchoring of the octahedral Cu-HKUST-1 (copper benzene-1,3,5-tricarboxylate) onto the wood sponge (WS), which inherently features internal micro-channels. The structure is then modified using the eco-friendly hydrophobic long-chain coupling agent dodecyltrimethoxysilane (DTMS). Due to its unique micro/nanoscale rough surface morphology and low surface energy, the functional wood membrane (DTMS/HKUST-1@WS) exhibited a high contact angle of 162.98±1.10° for water and was able to effectively separate various immiscible oil/water mixtures. Notably, the DTMS/HKUST-1@WS membrane can be integrated into a pump drive system, serving as an advanced filter element for the sustained and efficient oil-water constituents. Results showed that this membrane possesses attractive permeability toward CCl 4 (56689.34 L·m −2 ·h −1 ) and toluene (47241.12 L·m −2 ·h −1 ), achieving separation efficiencies over 99.0%. Furthermore, this novel membrane exhibits remarkable resistance to physical damage, high/low temperatures, and corrosive solutions, thereby showcasing stable superhydrophobic and superoleophilic interfaces suitable for oily wastewater treatment in harsh environments. Thus, this work offers an innovative approach for designing functional wood-based MOF membranes to achieve highly efficient continuous oil-water separation.

Global climate change has exacerbated water scarcity, while traditional water treatment technologies are often unsustainable due to high energy consumption and negative environmental impacts, posing an urgent need for a sustainable solution. This study developed a novel wood-based flexible Janus membrane coupled with a spine structure for efficient oil-water emulsion separation and fog harvesting. The Janus wood membrane showed high separation efficiency (> 99.6%), high filtration flux (water-in-oil and oil-in-water emulsions exceeded 810 L/m²·h and 747 L/m²·h, respectively), and good reusability. Additionally, the introduction of spine and conical pores significantly enhanced fog collection efficiency (19.23 kg/m²·h), expanding the application potential of Janus membranes. Moreover, this Janus wood membrane offered excellent mechanical properties, dimensional stability, mildew resistance, and environmental benefits. This study underscored the potential of Janus membranes in water management and liquid separation, providing a sustainable solution to water scarcity.

The environmental pollution caused by the discharge of oily wastewater and printing and dyeing wastewater is becoming more and more serious. Therefore, it is necessary to find an efficient method to separate oil/water emulsions and remove organic dyes from water simultaneously. However, the traditional separation membranes are usually very expensive and easy polluting the environment. Therefore, how to prepare high-efficiency separation membrane from low-cost, green renewable materials remains a huge challenge. In this study, ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA) modified metal–organic framework (MOF-808) nanoparticles were introduced into the wood substrate to construct a 3D wood/MOF-808-EDTA membrane with efficient water purification performance (oil/water emulsion separation and organic dye removal). Due to the introduction of hydrophilic MOF-808-EDTA nanoparticles, this novel membrane can effectively separate stable oil-in-water emulsions and remove organic dyes from water. The prepared wood/MOF-808-EDTA membrane has a high separation efficiency (more than 99.9 %) and permeation flux (1698 ± 15.85 L·m −2 ·h −1 ). The removal efficiency of organic dyes is more than 94 % with the permeation flux 1360 ± 2.54 L·m −2 ·h −1 . More importantly, the separation efficiency (oil/water emulsion) remained above 99.9 % and the dye removal efficiency was still above 90 % after 10 cycles. Additionally, the wood/MOF-808-EDTA membrane also has good mechanical/chemical stability and anti-fouling properties. This work opens a new approach for the development of functional biomass material membranes for sewage purification.

Solar steam generation has attracted interest in water purification and seawater desalination as an efficient solar energy conversion method. However, the complex preparation process and limited efficiency restrict the practical applications of solar-generated steam. Here, we report a three-dimensional wood membrane inside coated with MoS2 (WM-H, with S defects) for efficient seawater desalination. The vertically aligned mesoporous wood channels and their inner microstructures increase the contact interface between water and MoS2 in wood. The formation of S defects allows the surface temperature of the membrane to reach ∼53 °C under 1 sun illumination. The MoS2-coated wood with S defects exhibited an excellent evaporation flux (1.46 kg m−2 h−1, one sun), with a solar thermal conversion efficiency of 82.5%. The adsorption peak values of Na+ on the two sides of MoS2 with defects are 2.17 times and 1.49 times higher than those of MoS2 without defects. The wood-based design provides an inexpensive way to capture solar energy and generate steam.

Efficient electrocatalytic reduction of CO 2 to value-added chemicals and fuels is a promising technology for mitigating energy shortage and pollution issues yet highly relay on the development of high-performance electrocatalysts. Herein, we develop an effective strategy to fabricate carbonized wood membrane (CW) decorated with AuPd alloy nanoparticles with tunable composition (termed as AuPd@CW) as self-supported electrodes for efficient electrocatalytic CO 2 reduction. The uniformly distributed AuPd nanoparticles on wood matrix are first achieved through the in-situ reduction of metal cations by the lignin content in wood. Subsequently, two-step carbonization was employed to promote the alloying of AuPd nanoparticles and the formation of CW. The AuPd@CW membrane electrode features an integrated macroscopic structure with numerous open and aligned channels for rapid electron transfer and mass diffusion and well-dispersed AuPd alloy nanoparticles as active sites for the CO 2 reduction. The optimal Au 95 Pd 5 @CW electrode affords a high selectivity for CO 2 electroreduction with a maximum CO faradaic efficiency (FE CO ) of 82% at an overpotential of 0.49 V, much higher than those obtained on Au@CW and Pd@CW electrodes. The CO current density and FE CO remain relatively stable during a 12 h electrolysis reaction. In addition, density functional theory (DFT) calculations reveal that alloying Au with Pd enables a balance between the formation of intermediate COOH* and the desorption of CO on the surface of AuPd nanoparticles, thus enhancing the selectivity of CO production. This work offers an effective strategy for the fabrication of bimetallic alloys supported on wood-based carbon membrane as a practical electrode for electrochemical energy conversion.

The artificial solid-state nanopore/nanochannel based electrochemical sensing technique has demonstrated great advantages such as high sensitivity and minimalized equipment. However, its application is largely hindered by complex routes and high expense for fabrication. Here, we develop low-cost and easily accessible channels based on natural wood and present a pathway to utilize the wood membrane for local electrochemistry applications. Inspired by the natural mineralization of wood, Prussian blue (PB), an artificial peroxidase (POD)-like mimetic, is mineralized in wood channels via a contra-diffusion technique. Using glucose enantiomers (L/D-Glu) as model analysts, a target-activated strategy is used for chiral molecule recognition by combining glucose oxidase (GOx) with PB-modified wood channels. In the as-proposed hybrid channels, GOx catalyzes the oxidation of only D-Glu to gluconic acid and H2O2. These products dramatically activate the POD-like activity of PB and further trigger the oxidation of the uncharged substrate 2,2′-azino-bis(3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonate) (ABTS) to cationic species (ABTS˙+) in the channels. More importantly, benefitting from the confinement effect of the channel and the asymmetrical mineralization of PB, a significantly selective and sensitive identification of D-Glu is achieved. This study provides a promising way to use natural wood as a novel channel membrane to replace artificial channels for constructing electrochemical sensing platforms.

Irregular hemorrhagic traumas always threaten the health of patients due to uncontrollable bleeding and wound infections. The traditional hemostatic materials show dissatisfactory hemostatic efficiency and antibacterial activity in solving these potential bleeding dangers. Herein, we proposed a kind of composites based on flexible wood membrane (FWM) loaded with chitosan/alginate derivative for accelerating rapid hemostasis and preventing infection. FWM was removed part of hemicellulose and lignin by using NaOH/Na 2 SO 3 mixture to obtain excellent flexibility while retaining the original porous structure, followed by loading silver nanoparticles on the FWM surface to prepare AgNPs-FWM as an antibacterial bio-carrier. Then, AgNPs-FWM was coated with polyoxyethylene stearate-modified chitosan and multi-aldehyde sodium alginate to fabricate the composites of chitosan/alginate/AgNPs-FWM (CSA/AgNPs-FWM) using in-situ Schiff base reaction. Furthermore, in vitro and in vivo experiments showed that the CSA/AgNPs-FWM composites exhibited lower BCI value (2.6 ± 1.3 %), more rapid hemostasis (26 s) and lower blood loss (67.8 mg) than that of the traditional materials. The possible mechanism for the hemostasis process was not only the high blood absorption capacity, but also the synergistic interaction between hydrophobic alkane chains, amino groups, aldehydes, hydroxyl groups and blood cells. Moreover, CSA/AgNPs-FWM showed exceptional superiorities in mechanical properties and antibacterial activity, which endowed composites high potential in hemostasis application for irregular external wound.

Separating water-in-oil emulsions is important in terms of environmental protection and resource recovery. To address the challenges posed by the water–oil interface, superwetting materials have been designed to accomplish separation through filtration and adsorption. Superhydrophobic membranes prevent the permeation of water droplets owing to extreme repellence and their size-sieving abilities. However, their use in remediating water-contaminated oil is limited by high oil viscosities. Meanwhile, in-air superhydrophilic sorbents are rarely employed for the separation of water-in-oil emulsions due to the thermodynamic and kinetic limitations of water adsorption in oil. Herein, the integration of an under-medium superlyophilic membrane with the hierarchical porous structure of wood is presented for filtration-driven selective adsorption of water from surfactant-stabilized (10 g/L) water-in-oil emulsions. Compared to filtration through a natural wood membrane or direct adsorption using an under-oil superhydrophilic wood membrane, the under-medium superlyophilic wood membrane demonstrated high separation efficiencies of > 99.95% even when applied to the regeneration of high-viscosity lubricating (6.3 mPa s) and edible (50.5 mPa s) oils, exhibiting viscosity-dependent fluxes and excellent stability. Moreover, the cost of purifying 200 mL of lubricating oil using the modified wood membrane was much lower than the oil’s market price and required a low energy consumption of ca. 1.72 kWh. Environmental implication The ever-growing use of petroleum and industrial/domestic oil products has led to excessive (estimated at a million tons per year) output of waste oils. Because direct discharge of waste oils into the environment causes serious pollution problems, separating water-in-oil emulsions is important in terms of environmental protection and resource recovery. Here filtration-driven water adsorption has been demonstrated to be a feasible method for the remediation of water-contaminated waste oils, even those that are highly viscous.

Directional transport of liquid is crucial for many applications including seawater desalination, oil/water separation, fog collection, membrane distillation and so forth. Particularly, Janus wood membranes, with asymmetric special wetting property on two sides, and mechanically robust bio-based substrate with ample pores and open nano-/micro-channels, present enticing opportunities to address this challenge. In this study, we report a Janus mesoporous wood-based membrane demonstrating the capabilities for simultaneous oil/water separation, aromatic dyes removal, and seawater desalination. Thanks to the inner driving force arising from the asymmetric special wettability, unique wood microchannels for the transpiration of trees, and the synergistic effect of PPy and Ag/AgCl NPs anchored to wood matrix, Janus mesoporous wood-based membrane would promote the desired transport without any external energy input for high-efficiency seawater desalination and switchable oil/water separation. Meanwhile, the aromatic dyes and other organic compounds in industrial wastewater or polluted seawater would get more opportunities to contact with the anchored Ag/AgCl NPs during flowing through the wood microchannels. Above advantages endow the Janus mesoporous wood-based membrane with excellent pollutant degradation efficiency (MB: 86.4 %, RhB : 91.9 %), high solar conversion efficiency (95.33 %), outstanding separation efficiency towards oil-in-water emulsion (∼99.51 %), remarkable oil adsorption capacity (∼8 times of its own weight), and great antibacterial efficiencies (E. coli: 99.87 %, S. aureus : 99.78 %, B. subtilis: 99.96 %). Results also show that this Janus mesoporous wood-based membrane has the satisfactory resistance to acid and base, robust mechanical structure, good recycling stability, high salinity tolerance and remarkable self-desalting capability. This study represents a new avenue for fabrication and design of Janus wood-based photothermal materials, and certainly will contribute to alleviating the global water and energy shortage issue.

Conventional preparation of Janus membranes with asymmetric wettability focuses on the preparation of extreme hydrophilic side and hydrophobic side, but suffers from pore clogging, low liquid transfer and collection efficiency and short service life. In this study, Janus wood (JW) with a continuous wettability gradient was created throughunidirectional vacuum impregnation of a hydrophobic solvent after the delignification of wood. Digital image correlation (DIC) and layer-by-layer contact angle assessment were utilized to examine the thickness-dependent wettability gradient of the JW membrane. The JW membrane completed the modification of the cell walls without blocking the cell lumens. The presence of wettability gradient in the JW membrane effectively reduced the capillary force of liquid penetration, resulting in decreased adhesion and stagnation of liquid on the membrane surface, and increased flow rate and transport efficiency. Based on the continuous wettability change of the JW membrane, the JW membrane was endowed with the ability to act as a “unidirectional valve” to enable continuous and rapid directional transport of liquids. The mechanical properties of the JW membrane prepared by the unidirectional introduction method were significantly improved, rendering them highly stable and environmentally durable. The fog collection efficiency of the JW membrane was maintained at 97.7% over 10 repeated use cycles. For light oil/water and heavy oil/water mixtures, JW membrane maintained an efficiency of 99.6% or higher. Unlike conventional surface modification methods, the unidirectional introduction method proved practical and effective for modifying the JW membrane in the thickness direction. Furthermore, the prepared JW membrane was sustainable, inexpensive, durable, and environmentally friendly. This study provides a wide range of potential applications in fields such as droplet manipulation, multi-liquid separation, industrial wastewater purification, and microfluidics.
