Citrus-peel-like durable slippery surfaces

Xing Han,Xin Tang,Rifei Chen,Wei Li,Pingan Zhu,Liqiu Wang

We present a citrus-peel-like micro-cavity structure for the design of durable Slippery Liquid-Infused Porous Surfaces (SLIPSs). Owing to the re-entrant and enclosed nature of micro-cavity, lubricant oils can be stabilized by mitigating mass loss resulting from liquid displacement and shear drainage, respectively. Citrus-peel-like micro-cavity SLIPS displays two orders of magnitude enhancement in durability in the droplet-sliding test when compared with micro-pillar SLIPS and smooth lubricant surface. We demonstrated precise droplet manipulation without liquid loss and cross-contamination by harnessing the Marangoni effect with photo-thermal control. Cavity-smooth SLIPS with large adhesion contrast was patterned to initiate multiple droplet coalescences for on-demand neutralization reaction. The citrus-peel-like micro-cavity SLIPS would be beneficial to various applications, such as multi-step chemical reactions and bio-detections that require loss-free, contamination-free, and programmable droplet manipulation.

Enhanced extraction assisted by pressure and ultrasound for targeting RG-I enriched pectin from citrus peel wastes: A mechanistic study

Weiwei Hu,Huan Cheng,Dongmei Wu,Jianle Chen,Xingqian Ye,Shiguo Chen

The rhamnogalacturonan I (RG-I) region of pectin shows health benefits and novel gel applications. Commercial pectin is extracted from citrus peel in most instances, whereas they are homogalacturonan (HG)-dominated productions and the methods to extract pectin targeting RG-I are limited. To take full advantage of citrus wastes and upgrading this pectin resources, a new extraction method based on a diluted NaOH assisted by a combination of ultrasound (US) and pressure, namely manosonication (MS), was established for RG-I enriched pectin extraction. MS significantly enhanced the pectin yield (21.47 ± 0.11%) while reducing the use of NaOH reagents (50 mmol/L) and processing time (50 min). Structurally, the MS (300 kPa) resulting products achieved nearly a 2-fold greater RG-I content (58.61 mol%) than that of commercial pectin (30.12 mol%). Moreover, for the investigation of the extraction mechanism, external pressure enhanced the cavitation effect, as the calorimetric intensity increased from 1.28 W/mL (100 kPa) to 3.3 W/mL (350 kPa). A sufficient ultrasonic mechanical action allowed for obtaining RG-I enriched products with large molecular weight (9.506 × 10 4 –2.813 × 10 5 ) and low degree of methoxylation. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and scanning electron microscopies (SEM) verified the increased disintegration of the cell wall tissue by MS. Raman imaging and immunofluorescence labeling suggested the synergistic effect of pressure and ultrasound on enhancing the yields and RG-I content. This new method provided alternations in functional polysaccharides extraction, and the yield and structure of citrus RG-I enriched pectin strongly indicates the potentials of MS in other RG-I rich vegetables applications.

Physicochemical characterization of pectin extracted from mandarin peels using novel electromagnetic heat

Na Yang,Yamei Jin,Yuyi Zhou,Xiaoqun Zhou

A novel electromagnetic heat extraction method was presented, whereby mandarin peels residue solution was located in a winding coil subjected to an oscillating magnetic field, and the pectin was extracted under appropriate conditions. Numerical relationships between applied magnetic field and induced electric field (IEF) in the extraction process were elaborated. The results showed that the induced current density, IEF and terminal temperature increased with increasing magnetic field. The maximum current density of 0.35 A/cm corresponds to the highest terminal temperature of 84.6 °C and IEF intensity of 26.6 V/cm. When magnetic field intensity was 1.39 T and the extraction time was 15 min, the maximum yield of pectin reached 9.16 %. In addition, all treatments impacted the ash content, protein content, water-holding capacity (WHC), and oil-holding capacity (OHC) of the obtained pectin. The pectin extracted by electromagnetic heat had the lowest DE value of 71.3 % with 126.55 kDa molecular weight, while the GalA content was at the highest level of 76.18 %. After different treatments, the composition of pectin monosaccharides changed, but there were slight differences in the composition of pectin polysaccharides. Moreover, the electromagnetic heat extracted pectin had light color and an obvious surface fragmentation of the peel residue.

Separation of Citrus Essential Oil and Hesperidin from Citrus Peel Through Combined Mixed-Solvent and Multi-Phase Salting Out Extraction

Weilong Zheng,Fang Wu,Xi Luo,Caimiao Bian,Yingying Zhang,Fengwei Yin,Haiyu Liu,Yongqian Fu

Large amounts of citrus peel are discarded as solid waste owing to the lack of recycling methods. In this study, mixed solvent extraction combined with multi-phase salting-out extraction was performed to explore the extraction process of essential oil and hesperidin. Optimal conditions were used for mixed solvent extraction (citrus peel 6%; ratio of ethanol to n-hexane 1:5; duration, stirring speed, and temperature were 150 min, 120 r/min, and 45°C, respectively) and multi-phase salting-out extraction (citrus peel residue 10%; ratio of salt to ethanol 19:24; mass fraction of n-hexane 25%; extraction duration 120 min). Under two-step extraction conditions, 63.74±2.40% essential oil and 27.13±1.36% hesperidin were recovered, with total extraction efficiencies of 5.19±0.09 and 1.91±0.25%, respectively. The amplification effect was not significant, and the organic solvents could be reused three times while maintaining 80% recovery in both steps to balance the commercial cost and extraction efficiency.

Preparation of energy platform chemicals by hydrothermal conversion of citrus peel

Hao Xu,Yuan Zhao,Yingsha Guan,Chenguang Wang,Lingjun Zhu,Shanshan Xiong,Shurong Wang

In recent years, there has been a great interest in the conversion from agricultural waste to high value-added chemicals. Citrus peel is a low-cost and widely available waste resource that can be derived during citrus processing. In this study, we analyzed the composition of typical citrus peel and its hydrolysate. The hydrothermal conversion of citrus peel in different reaction conditions was also studied, and the optimum conditions for the preparation of levulinic acid and furfural were obtained. The maximum yield of levulinic acid was 21.9 wt% obtained in pure water, and the maximum yield of furfural was 9.1 wt% obtained in the water-DMSO solvent mixture. With the increase in the reaction temperature, the yield of furfural decreased while the yield of levulinic acid increased.

Effect of Drying Methods on Volatile Compounds of Citrus reticulata Ponkan and Chachi Peels as Characterized by GC-MS and GC-IMS

Xiangying Yu,Xiaochun Chen,Yuting Li,Lin Li

To reflect the volatile differences of dried citrus peel as affected by cultivars and drying methods, the volatile compounds of dried citrus peel of two cultivars (Citrus reticulata“Chachi” andCitrus reticulata“Ponkan”), prepared under three drying methods (sun-drying (SD), hot-air-drying (AD), and freeze-drying (FD)), were analyzed by GC-MS, odor activity values (OAVs), and GC-IMS. GC-MS data indicated that SD was favorable to preserve terpenic alcohols (linalool, α-terpineol and terpinene-4-ol), β-cymene, methyl methanthranilate, and monoterpenes; while AD was favorable to preserve aliphatic aldehydes and sesquiterpenes; and SD was more similar with AD in GC-MS analysis of volatile profile (of higher MW) for both cultivars from the PCA outcome. Furthermore, significant difference in volatile isomeric composition of different samples was also clearly demonstrated through extracted ion chromatogram (EIC) by GC-MS analysis. GC-IMS analysis showed the favorability of FD to preserve ketones, phenols, esters, and aromatic aldehydes; and SD was more similar with FD in GC-IMS analysis of volatile profile (of smaller MW) for both cultivars from the PCA outcome. Moreover, the OAVs indicate that 2-methoxy-4-vinylphenol contributed much to the flavor of dried Ponkan peel, while 2-methoxy-4-vinylphenol, methyl methanthranilate, and methyl anthranilate played an important role in the flavor of dried Chachi peel; and the highest OAVs for monoterpenes were observed at SD for both cultivars. Thus, the combination of GC-MS and GC-IMS analyses with PCA in this paper suggested the superiority of SD to preserve volatiles and characteristic aroma in dried citrus peel, and that SD contributed much to the quality of dried Chachi peel. Keywords:citrus peel;volatile compounds;sun-drying (SD);hot-air-drying (AD);freeze-drying (FD);GC-MS;GC-IMS

Antioxidant and pancreatic lipase inhibitory effects of flavonoids from different citrus peel extracts: An in vitro study

Rui Huang,Yu Zhang,Shuyu Shen,Zijian Zhi,Huan Cheng,Shiguo Chen,Xingqian Ye

Obesity and oxidative damage are two important risk factors associated closely with metabolic syndrome. Utilization of functional food ingredients is considered as a feasible way to tackle these challenges. In the present study, eight representative species of citrus peel extracts (CPEs) were evaluated and compared for their flavonoid profiles, antioxidant activities, and pancreatic lipase (PL) inhibitory capacities and mechanisms. Results indicated that hesperidin, naringin, neohesperidin, narirutin and eriocitrin were the five major flavonoids in CPEs, among which hesperidin was the main active PL inhibitor. Moreover, hesperidin could interact with PL by hydrogen bonds and van der Waals forces , and the interaction would not obviously change the secondary structure of PL. Overall, ponkan peel extract, having the strongest overall antioxidant activity, the highest content of hesperidin and total phenolic compounds among all tested CPEs, is a promising natural ingredient to scavenge free radicals and manage obesity.

Polarity-dependent extraction of flavonoids from citrus peel waste using a tailor-made deep eutectic solvent

Meilin Xu,Lu Ran,Ning Chen,Xiaowei Fan,Dabing Ren,Lunzhao Yi

Choline chloride-based deep eutectic solvents (DESs) were used as green alternatives to conventional organic solvents for extracting valuable flavonoids from citrus peel waste. The effects of viscosity, pH, and polarity of DESs on the extraction efficiency were investigated. Results revealed linear dependence of extraction yield of citrus flavonoids on the polarity of the hydrogen bond donor (HBD). To simultaneously and effectively extract polymethoxylated flavonoids (PMFs) and glycosides of flavonoids (GoFs) with different polarities, five ternary DESs were designed and prepared by combining the effective HBD components. Among the tailor-made DESs studied, choline chloride–levulinic acid– N -methyl urea showed the highest extraction yield of total flavonoids. Under optimized extraction conditions, 18.75 mg/g PMFs and 47.07 mg/g GoFs were extracted from citrus peel with recoveries of 95.87% and 86.32%, respectively. This study presents a useful strategy based on tailor-made DESs to selectively extracted value-added flavonoids from waste peels in the citrus-processing industry.

Dietary citrus peel essential oil ameliorates hypercholesterolemia and hepatic steatosis by modulating lipid and cholesterol homeostasis

Konglong Feng,Xiaoai Zhu,Guo Liu,Qixin Kan,Tong Chen,Yunjiao Chen,Yong Cao

Citrus peel essential oil (CPEO) contains abundant volatile compounds and exhibits fragrance properties and beneficial pharmacological effects on humans. Herein, we aimed to investigate the effects of CPEO on the prevention of hypercholesterolemia and hepatic steatosis in high-fat diet-fed rats and identify its possible regulatory mechanisms in lipid metabolism by combining lipidomics with gene expression analysis. CPEO at effective supplementation levels of 0.5% and 0.75% significantly ameliorated hypercholesterolemia and hepatic steatosis, including decreased serum total cholesterol (TC), low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-c), hepatic TC and triglyceride (TG) levels, and hepatic lipid droplet accumulation. Lipidomics analysis revealed that the total levels of fatty acid (FFA), TG and cholesteryl ester (CE) classes in the liver tissue were remarkably decreased after 0.75% CPEO supplementation some of which (3 TGs and 4 CEs) might emerge as potential lipid biomarkers in response to the effects of CPEO. Furthermore, these lipidomics findings were associated with downregulation of lipogenesis-related genes SREBP-1c, ACC and FAS and upregulation of bile acid biosynthesis-related genes LXRα, CYP7A1 and CYP27A1 in the liver. This study indicated that CPEO could effectively prevent hypercholesterolemia and hepatic steatosis, possibly because of its mediation of lipid and cholesterol homeostasis by altering liver lipid metabolites and regulating lipid metabolism-related genes.

High-performance liquid chromatography micro-fraction bioactive evaluation combined with countercurrent chromatographic separation of antioxidants from Citrus peel and their tyrosinase inhibition activities

Liqun Fang,Tingting Lin,Ben Chen,Haibo You,Chunyan Wu,Chu Chu,Shengqiang Tong

In the present study, high-performance liquid chromatography micro-fraction bioactive evaluation and high speed countercurrent chromatography were performed on screening, identification and isolation of antioxidants from Citrus peel. Three compounds were screened as antioxidants and tyrosinase inhibitors using 2,2′-azino-bis (3-ethyl-benzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid) radical cation scavenging assay and tyrosinase activity test, then they were identified as eriocitrin, narirutin and hesperidin. Moreover, the solvent system ethyl acetate- n -butanol-water (6:4:10, v/v/v) was used for separation of ethyl acetate extract of Citrus peel by high speed countercurrent chromatography. In total, 0.45 mg of eriocitrin with 87.10% purity, 2.04 mg of narirutin with 95.19% purity and 1.35 mg of hesperidin with 95.19% purity were obtained from 20 mg of ethyl acetate extract of Citrus peel in a single run and then each component was subjected to 2,2′-azino-bis (3-ethyl-benzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid) radical cation scavenging assay and tyrosinase inhibition assay. Eriocitrin showed great antioxidant activity (the half-maximum concentration: 3.65 µM) and tyrosinase inhibition activity (the half-maximum concentration: 115.67 µM), while narirutin and hesperidin exhibited moderate activity. Tyrosinase inhibition activity for eriocitrin in vitro was reported for the first time. Furthermore, molecular docking between eriocitrin and mushroom tyrosinase was also studied.

Effective hydroxylation of tangeretin from Citrus Peel (Chenpi) by edible acids and its improvement in antioxidant and anti-lipase activities

Xin Huang,Xingran Kou,Li Wang,Ruya Ji,Chaoyang Ma,Hongxin Wang

Tangeretin (TAN) is a biologically functional polymethoxylated flavonoid , extracted from the Citrus Peel (Chenpi). Although 5-demethyltangeretin (5-DT) generated through hydrolysis using a TAN precursor has superior biological function to TAN, its traditional preparation methods are difficult due to environmental hazard and low efficiency processes. In this study, the phosphoric acid (a kind of edible acids) was screened as catalysts of TAN hydrolysis conversion to 5-DT. The main conversion-influencing factors of reaction (material/liquid ratio, temperature and time) were investigated and the antioxidant activity of the modified products was determined by measuring DPPH (Diphenylpicrylbenzoquinone) free radical scavenging capacity and total reducing power. The phosphoric acid/ethanol (v/v) ratio of 7:3, material/liquid (g/L) ratio of 2:1, conversion temperature of 175 °C and conversion time of 2 h were attained as optimal conditions with a 93.71% conversion rate. Further, in vitro antioxidant and anti-lipase experiments confirmed that 5-DT was superior to TAN in total reducing power, scavenging capacity of DPPH free radicals (p < 0.01) and inhibition of lipase activities. Therefore, phosphoric acid is proposed as an alternative catalyst for the modification of TAN. Further, it provided technical support for the industrial production of 5DT and its application in functional foods.

High acidity organic waste degradation and the potential to bioremediation of heavy metals in soil by an acid-tolerant Serratia sp.

Zhong Bin,Xie Hanyi,Pan Tao,Su Buli,Xu Weijun,Wu Zhenqiang

Highly acidic citrus pomace (CP) is a byproduct of Pericarpium Citri Reticulatae production and causes significant environmental damage. In this study, a newly isolated acid-tolerant strain of Serratia sp. JS-043 was used to treat CP and evaluate the effect of reduced acid citrus pomace (RACP) in passivating heavy metals. The results showed that biological treatment could remove 97.56% of citric acid in CP, the organic matter in the soil increased by 202.60% and the catalase activity in the soil increased from 0 to 0.117 U g −1 . Adding RACP into soil can increase the stabilization of Cu, Zn, As, Co, and Pb. Specifically, through the metabolism of strain JS-043, RACP was also involved in the stabilization of Zn and Pb, and Residual Fraction in the total pool of these metals increased by 10.73% and 10.54%, respectively. Finally, the genome sequence of Serratia sp. JS-043 was completed, and the genetic basis of its acid-resistant and acid-reducing characteristics was preliminarily revealed. JS-043 also contains many genes encoding proteins associated with heavy metal ion tolerance and transport. These findings suggest that JS-043 may be a high-potential strain to improve the quality of acidic organic wastes that can then be useful for soil bioremediation. Graphical Abstract
