Lightweight and strong silicon carbide (SiC) ceramics with complex lattice structures were fabricated by vat photopolymerization 3D printing technology followed by a one-step pyrolysis process . The UV-light penetration depth of the SiC ceramic slurries was increased more than three times based on the formation of SiC@SiO 2 core@shell structured particles through pre-oxidation processing. To reduce the sintering temperature and shrinkage of SiC ceramics, 40 vol% solid loading SiC@SiO 2 ceramic slurries mixed with photocurable resins containing 0–70 wt% of polysiloxane were prepared. SiC@SiO 2 /SiOC ceramic with less than 8% linear shrinkage rate was obtained after pyrolysis at 1000–1200 ℃. The pyrolyzed SiC@SiO 2 /SiOC lattice ceramics exhibited a specific strength of 4.6 × 10 4 N m/kg with a cellular density of 0.87 g/cm 3 , surpassing various other lattice structures and porous ceramics with similar porosity. The complex structure forming ability, mechanical performance and its short developing cycle make this technology to be a promising method for structural integrated SiC ceramic manufacturing.

Lightweight structures are often used for applications requiring higher strength-to-weight ratios and lower densities, such as in aircraft, vehicles, and various engine components. Three-dimensional (3D) printing technology has been widely used for lightweight polymer structures because of the superior flexibility, personalized design, and ease of operation offered by it. However, synthesis of lightweight polymeric structures that possess both high specific strength and glass transfer temperature (Tg) remains an elusive goal, because 3D printed polymers with these properties are still very few in the market. For example, 3,3′,4,4‘-biphenyl tetracarboxylic dianhydride (BPDA) and p-phenylenediamine (PDA)-type (UPILEX-S type) polyimides show exceptional thermal stability (Tg up to ≈400 °C) and mechanical properties (tensile strength exceeding 500 MPa) and are the first choice if extremely high temperatures of 400 °C or even higher (depending on the duration) are required, which hampers their processing using existing 3D printing techniques. However, their processing using existing 3D printing techniques is hampered due to their thermal resistance. Herein, a 3D printing approach was demonstrated for generating complex lightweight BPDA-PDA polyimide geometries with unprecedented specific strength and thermal resistance. The simple aqueous polymerization reaction of BPDA with water-soluble PDA and triethylamine (TEA) afforded the poly(amic acid) ammonium salt (PAAS) hydrogels. These PAAS solutions showed clear shear thinning and thermo-reversibility, along with high G′ gel-state moduli, which ensured self-supporting features and shape fidelity in the gel state. Postprinting thermal treatment transformed the PAAS precursor to BPDA–PDA polyimide (UPILEX-S type). The resulting layer-by-layer deposition onto lightweight polyimide honeycombs in the form of triangular, square, and hexagonal structures showed tailorable mechanical strength, exceptional compressive strength-to-weight ratio (highest up to 0.127 MPa (kg m–3)−1), and remarkable thermoresistance (Tg approximately 380 °C). These high-performance 3D printed polyimide honeycombs and unique synthetic techniques with general structures are potentially useful in fields ranging from automotive to aerospace technologies.

Porous materials with ultrahigh specific strength are highly desirable for aerospace, automotive and construction applications. However, because of the harsh processing of metal foams and intrinsic low strength of polymer foams, both are difficult to meet the demand for scalable development of structural foams. Herein, we present a supramolecular metallic foam (SMF) enabled by core-shell nanostructured liquid metals connected with high-density metal-ligand coordination and hydrogen bonding interactions, which maintain fluid to avoid stress concentration during foam processing at subzero temperatures. The resulted SMFs exhibit ultrahigh specific strength of 489.68 kN m kg −1 (about 5 times and 56 times higher than aluminum foams and polyurethane foams) and specific modulus of 281.23 kN m kg −1 to withstand the repeated loading of a car, overturning the previous understanding of the difficulty to achieve ultrahigh mechanical properties in traditional polymeric or organic foams. More importantly, end-of-life SMFs can be reprocessed into value-added products (e.g., fibers and films) by facile water reprocessing due to the high-density interfacial supramolecular bonding. We envisage this work will not only pave the way for porous structural materials design but also show the sustainable solution to plastic environmental risks.

The combination of silicon carbide (SiC) ceramics and stereolithography technology has the potential to manufacture complex-shaped SiC components, thereby expanding application possibilities. However, the high sintering temperature and structural-performance anisotropy of three dimensional (3D)-printed SiC components have limited their practical use. Herein, a novel method is introduced to produce high-specific-strength SiC-based ceramics at a relatively low temperature of 1100 °C. To enhance ultra violet (UV) light penetration in the SiC slurry, a mixed SiC/SiO2 slurry (30% SiO2 and 70% SiC by volume) with a solid loading of up to 40% was prepared, improving printability. Additionally, a high methyl-phenyl-polysiloxane (PSO) solution content (75% of liquid resin weight) was incorporated to enable the low-temperature pyrolysis of SiC/SiO2/PSO ceramics. The resulting pyrolyzed SiC/SiO2/PSO lattice ceramic exhibited a high specific strength of 1.03 × 105 N·m/kg with a density of 1.75 g/cm3, outperforming other SiC-based lattice structures with similar porosity. The bending strength of SiC/SiO2/SiOC ceramics reached 95.49 ± 8.79 MPa, close to some of those prepared at temperatures of 1400 °C and above). Notably, the addition of the silicon carbide oxide (SiOC) phase to the SiC/SiO2 ceramics significantly reduces anisotropy, lowering the transverse and longitudinal compression strength ratios from 1.87 to 1.08, achieving 79% compensation in mechanical properties. This improvement is attributed to the cohesive force of SiOC shrinkage, promoting a uniform distribution of sintered components, resulting in a more robust and balanced material structure. This method offers valuable insight into the additive manufacturing (AM) of SiC-based ceramics at lower temperatures and provides new guidance for controlling anisotropy in 3D-printed ceramic parts.

Bioinspired design and manufacture based on sustainable raw materials is emerging as a promising way to develop high-performance lightweight structural materials. However, the bottom-up fabrication of bioinspired materials, involving the densification from dispersion systems of heterophase components through conventional evaporation methods, faces significant challenges due to high energy and time consumption. Here we demonstrate a simple and efficient method termed “capillarity-assisted densification” for the facile preparation of high-performance bioinspired structural materials. This versatile method, inspired by the wicking effect, effectively accelerates manufacturing efficiency while maintaining structural stability. The as-fabricated mineralized cellulose bulk structural materials exhibit high specific strength (146 MPa/(Mg m −3 )) and toughness (6.4 MPa m 1/2 /(Mg m −3 )), surpassing those of conventional polymer-based composites and various bioinspired composites. Furthermore, such a unique lightweight structural material bridges the gap between engineering ceramics and light alloys regarding the coefficient of thermal expansion and specific fracture toughness. We propose that green and robust mineralized cellulose bulk structural materials are promising for advanced lightweight structures, and that the capillarity-assisted densification could be easily adapted for various dispersion phases for practical bioinspired production.

The utilization of granite sludge offers significant economic and environmental advantages. This study focuses on preparing porous glass-ceramics from Ca(OH) 2 -modified granite sludge through a two-step sintering process comprising dense sintering and high-temperature foaming, with the addition of 1 % SiC powder as a foaming agent. The impact of foaming temperature and Ca(OH) 2 addition on the structure, compressive strength , specific strength , and thermal conductivity of the porous glass-ceramics is examined. Incorporating the Ca(OH) 2 modifier reduces the glass's viscosity and effectively eliminates micropores on the pore walls. The former promotes foaming and increases porosity, while the latter increases the specific strength of porous glass-ceramics. Increasing both the foaming temperature and the Ca(OH) 2 concentration reduces glass viscosity and promotes mineral dissolution, facilitating the foaming process. However, the specific strength of the porous glass-ceramics initially increases before decreasing due to pore coalescence and excessive mineral dissolution. Theoretical evaluations of compressive strength and thermal conductivity indicate that porous glass-ceramics possess a closed-cell pore structure . Porous glass-ceramic made from granite powder containing 3.5 % Ca(OH) 2 and foamed at 1240 °C exhibits an apparent density and porosity of 0.73 g/cm 3 and 67.1 %, respectively. The compressive strength and thermal conductivity are 14.2 MPa and 0.422 W/(m·K) respectively, with a peak specific strength of 19.4 kN·m/kg. This innovative process enables the scalable recycling of granite sludge into energy-saving building materials.

As a laminated composite, the robust interface between aragonite platelets and organic matrices imparts nacre with superior mechanical properties. Additionally, the prestressing strategy, which involves compressing hydroxyapatite platelets through the contraction of collagen molecules, is employed to enhance bone strength. Inspired by these natural materials, layered brushite/sodium alginate composite bulks (BSPE) are fabricated with high performance through synergistic interfacial interactions and prestress processing. The bulks are prepared by stacking and hot-pressing BSPE films, which are obtained via unidirectional freeze-casting and pressing. To strengthen the interfacial interactions, brushite platelets are surface-modified with polyvinyl alcohol molecules, forming strong hydrogen bonds with sodium alginate chains. Furthermore, megapascal-level contractile prestresses are generated by soaking surface-modified films in ethanol, inducing the shrinkage of sodium alginate chains through dehydration. Consequently, the specific strength and specific toughness of the composites reach 137.5 MPa/(Mg m −3 ) and 3.8 MPa m 1/2 /(Mg m −3 ), respectively, representing 2.0 and 2.5 times the values of natural nacre. Moreover, the energy absorption capacity of the BSPE bulk is approximately 2.5 times higher than that of the control bulk. The synergistic approach provides new insights for designing and manufacturing high-performance composites under mild conditions.

Currently, most people spend 90% of their daily time inside, relying on mechanical heating and air conditioning. Space heating is the largest source of final energy demand, making up about 50% of the total each year. Existing buildings often have insulation and central heating added to reduce energy consumption for heating, which increases construction costs and carbon emissions. Here, a potent and attainable strategy was demonstrated to process lignocellulose into a high-performance passive solar heating wood with satisfactory passive solar heating and mechanical properties. The passive solar heating wood could absorb ultraviolet light and convert it into thermal energy, resulting in continuous above-ambient heating during the cold day. Compared to traditional building materials, passive solar heating wood exhibits superior heating performance (average daytime heating of ∼25.6 °C) and thermal insulation performance (mid-IR emissivity of 0.51). In addition, the passive solar heating wood exhibits ultra-strong specific strength (80.1 MPa g −1 cm 3 ) and specific impact toughness (56.33 kJ m −2 g −1 cm 3 ) than the most of common polymers, ceramics, and concrete, which opens the way for practical application of lignocellulose based structural materials in advanced thermal management buildings.

Biomimetic learning has boosted the development of layered nanocomposites with superior mechanical properties, fast ion conduction, high barrier capacities, and high conductivities, resulting in numerous practical applications in artificial structural materials, energy storage, filtration, and electromagnetic shielding. These outstanding properties arise from the highly oriented layered structure. Convenient fabrication and complex shapes are required for practical applications. However, conventional strategies, including ice templating, vacuum filtration, and electromagnetic induction, are constrained by time-consuming fabrication and sample shapes, restricting their extension to large-scale applications. Here, we present a facile, universal, and scalable strategy for fabricating layered nanocomposites using ion diffusion-induced directional gelation. This ultrafast volumetric production, including controllable thickness growth with no size restriction, results from continuous gelation and convenient post-processing, whose fabrication rate is 21.7 times that of ice templating, 13.2 times that of vacuum filtration, and 3.1 times that of electromagnetic induction. Furthermore, layered alumina/epoxy nanocomposites were prepared with superior specific strength (2.9 MPa m 1/2 /(Kg/m 3 )) and specific toughness (96.2 MPa/(Kg/m 3 )), demonstrating the validity of our strategy for layered structures. Moreover, our approach can be extended to other material systems and arbitrary shapes for multifunctional applications in wearable devices, sensors, and anti-corrosion coatings.
