It is extremely important to develop a facile and versatile strategy for effectively separating various oil–water mixtures. Here we report that the pith of juncus (which is also known as common rushes) can serve as a versatile material for oil–water separation. Under the action of capillary force and gravity, a piece of pith automatically and continuously separates not only immiscible oil–water mixtures but also surfactant-stabilized water-in-oil emulsions with high selectivity and desirable flux. The separation strategy is cost-effective and energy-efficient because it avoids the switch of wettability, the input of additional energy, and the use of low-surface-energy chemicals or special equipment. The unique capability of the pith is mainly attributed to the presence of three-dimensionally (3D) reticular texture with highly hydrophobic and superoleophilic properties. Owing to its easy availability and high effectiveness, juncus might be a promising material aiming for oil–water separation, water treatment, and purification of solvent or fuel, and so on.

Gallium-based room-temperature liquid metals have enormous potential for realizing various applications in electronic devices, heat flow management, and soft actuators. Filling narrow spaces with a liquid metal is of great importance in rapid prototyping and circuit printing. However, it is relatively difficult to stretch or spread liquid metals into desired patterns because of their large surface tension. Here, we propose a method to fabricate a particle-based porous material which can enable the rapid and spontaneous diffusion of liquid metals within the material under a capillary force. Remarkably, such a method can allow liquid metal to diffuse along complex structures and even overcome the effect of gravity despite their large densities. We further demonstrate that the developed method can be utilized for prototyping complex three-dimensional (3D) structures via direct casting and connecting individual parts or by 3D printing. As such, we believe that the presented technique holds great promise for the development of additive manufacturing, rapid prototyping, and soft electronics using liquid metals.

Restricting the diffusion of conductive inks plays a key role in printed electronics application. Micro-channels with different sidewall surface energies, which can be approximated as a capillary, are fabricated to restrict the blade-coated ink diffusion using both of the gravitational effect and the capillary force. The coffee ring effect of aqueous silver ink is inhibited by the capillary force when the hydrophobic sidewalls distance is no more than 50 μm in this paper. As a result, the conductive lines with improved cross-sectional profiles are obtained by this method, with the typical resistivity more than 108 times lower than the measured results with hydrophilic sidewalls. The capillary force was also found to lose its effect when the width is larger enough, which needs surfactant addition to improve the silver film property. I–V curves of the original aqueous ink and the ink improved by traditional methods shows that the profile improvement by the hydrophobic sidewall can be used with other ink improving methods cooperatively. These studies open up the possibility of improving the printed conductive patterns by this method as an auxiliary tool used together with the traditional methods reported before.

Droplet manipulation is playing an important role in various fields, including scientific research, industrial production, and daily life. Here, inspired by the microstructures and functions of Namib desert beetles, Nepenthes pitcher plants, and emergent aquatic plants, we present a multibioinspired slippery surface for droplet manipulation by employing combined strategies of bottom-up colloidal self-assembly, top-down photolithography, and microstructured mold replication. The resultant multilayered hierarchical wettability surface consists of hollow hydrogel bump arrays and a lubricant-infused inverse opal film as the substrate. Based on capillary force, together with slippery properties of the substrate and wettability of the bump arrays, water droplets from all directions can be attracted to the bumps and be collected through hollow channels to a reservoir. Independent of extra energy input, droplet condensation, or coalescence, these surfaces have shown ideal droplet pumping and water collection efficiency. In particular, these slippery surfaces also exhibit remarkable features including versatility, generalization, and recyclability in practical use such as small droplet collection, which make them promising candidates for a wide range of applications.

Turbulence plays a critical role in flotation , as it has a marked impact on bubble-particle interactions, i.e., collision, attachment, and detachment. However, the detachment mechanisms of bubble-particle aggregates in a turbulent field are still not well understood. Particularly, the oscillatory detachment mechanism of bubble-particle aggregates lacks direct experimental evidence. For this reason, this study focuses on the study of the detachment mechanism of hydrophobic particles with different sizes on an oscillating bubble surface. In this study, vertical capillary forces of particles with different sizes were measured by surface force apparatus. The bubbles with attached particles were made to vibrate vertically by the oscillatory detachment measurement system, and the critical detachment amplitudes of particles were measured. Images of the dynamic detachment process of particles were captured by a high-speed camera. Then, the detachment mechanism of particles with different sizes on the oscillating bubble surface was further investigated by image analysis, displacement and acceleration measurement , and comparison of experimental and theoretical vertical critical vibration forces. The results show that although the capillary force increases with the increase of particle size, the critical detachment amplitude decreases significantly. It was also observed that the particles with different sizes have different detachment behaviors on the oscillating bubble surface due to the difference of inertia. Compared with the vertical detachment of coarse particles, the approximately tangential detachment of fine particles is the main reason for the decrease of vertical capillary force, which leads to the conclusion that the experimental value of vertical critical vibration force of fine particles is far less than the theoretical value. The present study is expected to provide a fundamental understanding of the bubble-particle detachment mechanism in a turbulent field.

Silver nanowires (NWs) (AgNWs) have emerged as the most promising conductive materials in flexible optoelectronic devices owing to their excellent photoelectric properties and mechanical flexibility. It is widely acknowledged that the practical application of AgNW networks faces challenges, such as high surface roughness, poor substrate adhesion, and limited stability. Encapsulating AgNW networks with graphene has been recognized as a viable strategy to tackle these issues. However, conventional methods like self-assembly reduction–oxidation or chemical vapor deposition often yield graphene protective layers with inherent defects. Here, we propose a novel one-step hot-pressing method containing ethanol solution that combines the spontaneous transfer and encapsulation process of rGO films onto the surface of the AgNWs network, enabling the preparation of flexible rGO/AgNWs/PET (reduced graphene oxide/silver NWs/polyethylene terephthalate) electrodes. The composite electrode exhibits outstanding photoelectric properties (T ≈ 88%, R ≈ 6 Ω sq–1) and possesses a smooth surface, primarily attributed to the capillary force generated by ethanol evaporation, ensuring the integrity of the rGO delamination process on the original substrate. The capillary force simultaneously promotes the tight encapsulation of rGO and AgNWs, as well as the welding of the AgNWs junction, thereby enhancing the mechanical stability (20,000 bending cycles and 100 cycles of taping tests), thermal stability (∼30 °C and ∼25% humidity for 150 days), and environmental adaptability (100 days of chemical attack) of the electrode. The electrode’s practical feasibility has been validated by its exceptional flexibility and cycle stability (95 and 98% retention after 5000 bending cycles and 12,000 s long-term cycles) in flexible electrochromic devices.

Spontaneous imbibition is one of the important means to enhance oil recovery in low permeability reservoirs, and it has good field application effects. Through the interfacial tension (IFT), contact angle (CA), and adsorption experiments, the effects of SDBS surfactant on IFT and reservoir wettability were studied, and the adsorption rule of SDBS at the mineral surface was obtained. On this basis, the imbibition recovery and mechanism of cores with different permeability are studied. The study showed that in low permeability reservoir, gravity and capillary force are the main controlling factors of imbibition. In the early stage, gravity determines the recovery, because the imbibition rate is 2.75 times that dominated by capillary force. The capillary force can continue to produce oil in small pores, and the imbibition time is twice that of gravity, which determines the recovery in the late imbibition stage. Therefore, the synergistic effect of gravity and capillary force can optimize the imbibition recovery, in low permeability reservoirs. When the concentration of SDBS solution is CMC (0.1%), due to the mineral interface adsorbs, the capillary force decreases by 10.76%, and the adhesion work increases by 3.42 times, resulting in a decrease in the imbibition recovery. The imbibition driving force is different for different reservoir properties, which can be adjusted by adding a surfactant to change IFT and CA.

Inspired by the capillary effect in nature (such as water transport in soils) and droplet-drive performance of Nepenthes, a new driving strategy for emulsion separation membrane based on the synergistic effect of capillary force and progressive wettability-induction force was proposed. It is prepared by a one-step, simple continuous, electrospinning process. By adjusting solutions and spinning parameters, the membrane obtains its capillary structure and progressive oleophilicity in one-step preparation. Attractively, the membrane shows separation efficiency and excellent permeability, with a flux of 384801 L m −2 h −1 bar −1 for the oil-water mixture, and the little water content of less than 18 ppm. And for emulsions, the flux even reaches 50000 L m −2 h −1 bar −1 and the separation efficiency reaches 99.95%. Furthermore, the membrane has excellent mechanical-stability: at 80 kPa transmembrane pressure, it can still effectively prevent water's penetration. Drawing inspiration from nature, the incorporation of capillary force and progressive wettability-induction force into the separation membrane as an additional dual emulsion separation driving force proves to be a highly effective and versatile approach. This method provides a way to solve the general flux-efficiency balance problem of oil-water separation and also provides a new strategy for the preparation of separation membranes for various purposes.

Capillary force has been extensively investigated to drive the construction of complex microstructures, though most of those previous self-assembled microstructures were on flat surfaces. In this study, we propose a capillary-force-driven self-assembly strategy working for bionic three-dimensional (3D) functional surfaces. Precisely printed micropillar arrays with an extremely large format using projection micro-stereolithography (PμSL) 3D printing technique are assembled into periodic layered structures with the assistance of ethanol evaporation induced capillary force, though the capillary-force-driven self-assembly micropillars are strongly depend on their spatial arrangement and geometric parameters . Also, large-scale programmable capillary-force-driven self-assembly of micropillars can be achieved by tailoring the arrangements of them for various patterns. We further demonstrate the functions of programmable self-assembly micropillars for the selective capture and release of microparticles . Most significantly, we extend the programmable capillary-force-driven self-assembly of micropillars on 3D bionic curved surfaces with various applications, including the mimicked patterns and selective capturing of microparticles.

In this paper, the gas–liquid static contact angles in silica microtubes (inner diameter range of 5–700 μm) are measured by optical microscope. The experimental results show that the gas–liquid contact angles in the microtube have microscale wetting effect, which decrease monotonically with the decrease of the tube diameter and regularly deviate from the contact angle measured on the plate. When the tube diameter decreases from 700 μm to 5 μm, the contact angles of water and hexadecane decrease from 42.87° to 13.22° and 15.94°–9.09°, respectively. Actual microscale wetting effect causes the gas–liquid capillary force and driving resistance of residual droplets in pore-throat to be bigger than the value determined by the contact angle on the plate. The smaller the pore radius, the greater the influence of the microscale wetting effect on the capillary force. The larger pore-throat ratio and smaller throat radius, the greater influence of the microscale wetting effect on the driving resistance. These results advance our current understanding of wettability in porous media and offer us directly measured contact angles from pore scale which are better representation of actual pores than flat plate to characterize the fluid wettability in porous media.

Capillary force self-assembly (CFSA) technology unfolds great potential in the fabrication of functional micro/nanostructures. To date, most self-assembly methods focus on monolithic microstructure manipulation yet it remains a challenge to achieve precise localized control over the CFSA process of micro/nanostructures. Herein, a light-regulated CFSA is proposed to realize the localized precise control of microstructures, leveraging on the synergistic effect of photothermally-responsive hydrogel and self-assembly technique. The micropillars with asymmetric cross-linking densities can readily prepare by applying a rationally designed laser and laser-exposing dosage, thereby realizing the on-demand steering of their bending directions. Significantly, owing to the giant capillary force deriving from the evaporating water, above micropillars can successfully assemble into highly-ordered chiral structures. Simulation coupling with fundamental hydrodynamics enables to shed light on the light steering principle over pillar's actuations. Last, on the basis of vortical dichroism spectra analysis, the chiral characteristics of light-regulated self-assembly including the chiral as well as the achiral self-assembled microstructures are successfully deployed. This strategy provides an avenue for fabricating the localized controllable self-assembly at the microscale and will bloom the field over metamaterials, microsensors, chiral optics, and so on.

Numerous structures have been functionally optimized for directional liquid transport in nature. Inspired by lush trees’ xylem that enable liquid directional transportation from rhizomes to the tip of trees, a new kind of programmable microfluidic porous matrices using projection micro-stereolithography (P µ SL) based 3D printing technique is fabricated. Structural matrices with internal superhydrophilicity and external hydrophobicity are assembled for ultra-fast liquid rising enabled by capillary force. Moreover, the unidirectional microfluidic performance of the bionic porous matrices can be theoretically optimized by adjusting its geometric parameters. Most significantly, the successive programmable flow of liquid in a preferred direction inside the bionic porous matrices with tailored wettability is achieved, validating by a precisely printed liquid displayer and a microfluidic logic chip. The programmable and functional microfluidic matrices promise applications of patterned liquid flow, displayer, logic chip, cell screening, gas–liquid separation, and so on.
