With the assistance of surfactant, Fe nanoparticles are supported ong-C3N4nanosheets by a simple one-step calcination strategy. Meanwhile, a layer of amorphous carbon is coated on the surface of Fe nanoparticles during calcination. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM), scanning electron microscope (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and inductively coupled plasma (ICP) were used to characterize the morphology, structure, and composition of the catalysts. By electrochemical evaluate methods, such as linear sweep voltammetry (LSV) and cyclic voltammetry (CV), it can be found that Fe25-N-C-800 (calcinated in 800 °C, Fe loading content is 5.35 wt.%) exhibits excellent oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) activity and selectivity. In 0.1 M KOH (potassium hydroxide solution), compared with the 20 wt.% Pt/C, Fe25-N-C-800 performs larger onset potential (0.925 V versus the reversible hydrogen electrode (RHE)) and half-wave potential (0.864 V vs. RHE) and limits current density (2.90 mA cm−2, at 400 rpm). In 0.1 M HClO4, it also exhibits comparable activity. Furthermore, the Fe25-N-C-800 displays more excellent stability and methanol tolerance than Pt/C. Therefore, due to convenience synthesis strategy and excellent catalytic activity, the Fe25-N-C-800 will adapt to a suitable candidate for non-noble metal ORR catalyst in fuel cells. Keywords:oxygen reduction reaction;iron;coating;P-123

The design and synthesis of a multi-functional electrocatalyst with low cost and high efficiency is still a great challenge. Herein, we report the rational design and realization of a tri-functional electrocatalyst featuring Co/CoP embedded in a hairy nitrogen-doped carbon polyhedral (Co/CoP–HNC) derived from common metal organic frameworks (MOFs). The components of Co, CoP, and hairy nitrogen-doped carbon in the catalyst respectively render catalytic activity, high electrochemical surface area, and electronic conductivity. The synergy of the tailored Co/CoP–HNC catalyst provides high activity for oxygen reduction reaction (ORR), oxygen evolution reaction (OER), and hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). The catalytic performance and assembly feasibility are further demonstrated in overall water splitting and Zn–air battery tests, and both revealed high efficiency and long durability of the proposed electrocatalyst.

Pt/C is a practical electrocatalyst for oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) in metal-air batteries and fuel cells, however, also suffers the drawbacks of high cost and instability, which have propelled people to search for new substitutes, such as single-atom metal electrocatalysts. Herein, C 4 N was firstly synthesized from 2,3-diyldiamine phenazine via one-step hydrothermal method rather than the traditional way that two monomers react in organic solvent, and then loaded with single-atom metal (Pt or Ru) to form new electrocatalysts. The so-formed M@C 4 N (M = Pt or Ru) electrocatalysts show more excellent ORR performances with higher half-wave potential and better stability and methanol tolerance as compared with the commercial Pt/C. Specifically, the half-wave potential of 1%Pt@C 4 N and 0.5%Ru@C 4 N is 0.861 V and 0.828 V, respectively. Density functional theory calculations reveal that 1%Pt@C 4 N has stronger adsorption of reactant species and faster kinetics than 0.5%Ru@C 4 N in ORR pathway.

The oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) is a crucial step in fuel cells and metal-air batteries. It is necessary to expand the range of efficient non-precious ORR electrocatalysts on account of the low abundance and high cost of Pt/C catalysts. Herein, we synthesized crystalline cobalt-embedded N-doped carbon nanotubes (Co@CNTs-T) via facile carbonization of Co/Zn metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) with dicyandiamide at different temperatures (t = 600, 700, 800, 900 °C). Co@CNTs- 800 possessed excellent ORR activities in alkaline electrolytes with a half wave potential of 0.846 V vs. RHE (Reversible Hydrogen Electrode), which was comparable to Pt/C. This three-dimensional network, formed by Co@CNTs-T, facilitated electron migration and ion diffusion during the ORR process. The carbon shell surrounding the Co nanoparticles resulted in Co@CNTs-800 being stable as an electrocatalyst. This work provides a new strategy to design efficient and low-cost oxygen catalysts.Keywords:metal-organic frameworks;N-doped carbon;oxygen reduction reaction

In this work, a nitrogen-containing bidentate ligand named 5,5′-(9-octyl-9H-carbazole-2,7-diyl)bis(1,10-phenanthroline) (OCBP) was synthesized as a nitrogen precursor for making an oxygen reduction catalyst. The 1,10-phenanthroline unit provides a coordination site for copper ions, and the resulting Cu-Nxunit may be responsible for the catalytic activities of the catalyst. Carbon black was selected as a support to improve the electroconductibility of the resulting catalyst. The metallo-supramolecule (Cu-SOCBP) was dispersed on the surface of Vulcan XC-72 carbon and was used as a catalyst (designated as Cu-SOCBP/C) for the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR). The microscope structure and surface components of the catalyst were acquired via scanning electron microscopy and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, as well as X-ray powder diffraction. The electrochemical property and ORR mechanism of Cu-SOCBP/C were analyzed using a variety of electroanalytical methods including cyclic voltammetry, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, and linear sweep voltammetry. These results show that Cu-SOCBP/C was successfully synthesized and that ORR was achieved mainly via a four-electron transfer process to water. Thus, Cu-SOCBP/C was an effective catalyst and might have potential application as a cathodic catalyst in microbial fuel cells, which operate in an aqueous medium. Keywords:supramolecule;ORR activity;kinetics study

Rational design is essential in the synthesis of electrocatalysts for the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR). Herein, we introduced zeolitic imidazolate framework-8 (ZIF-8) and polyvinyl pyrrolidone (PVP) into the electrospinning process of the polyacrylonitrile (PAN) and hemin to increase the active site loading and exposed active area of the final product with empty bead-like structures. In this method, ZIF-8 acts as a carbon skeleton to provide a rich microporous structure that can support active sites, and as a nitrogen dopant to improve nitrogen contents. PVP changes the properties of the spinning solution, adjusts the fiber morphology, and to increase the exposed area of active sites as a pore former. The obtained Fe–N–C ORR catalyst delivered a half-wave potential (E1/2) of 0.924 V in a 0.1 M KOH solution and 0.77 V in a 0.1 M HClO4 solution. A homemade zinc air battery with power density of 236 mW cm−2 demonstrated the excellent performance of the catalyst under working conditions.

The electrocatalytic oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) is the key bottleneck of fuel cells and rechargeable metal-air batteries , and recently, metal nitrogen complex carbon (M N C) demonstrates great potential in these fields. However, the complex and easily degraded M N C structure often results in inferior activity and poor durability in electrolysis. Herein, we fabricate a catalyst of h-CeO 2 @CoNC through the extended Stöber method and subsequent pyrolysis , involving the hollow CeO 2 as the core and Co N C as the shell. The h-CeO 2 @CoNC catalyst exhibits notable ORR catalytic performances in 0.1 M KOH with a half-wave potential of 0.82 V and excellent durability, attributed to the synergistic interaction between CeO 2 and Co N C matrix. Specifically, the inner layer of CeO 2 is principally responsible for enhancing the chemical stability and the outer one of Co N C matrix is beneficial to boosting the ORR catalytic activity. This work provides an efficient preparation approach and further insight of rational design of the unique M N C catalysts for energy storage.

MnO 2 is considered to be one of the most promising electrocatalysts for oxygen reduction reactions (ORR) in alkaline media and can be applied to various electrochemical energy conversion and storage devices. However, it is limited by the relatively slow kinetics of the cathodic electrochemical reactions . In addition, it is difficult to control the presence state of Ag during the modification of MnO 2 . To this end, an efficient ORR electrocatalyst of Ag nanoparticles supported by MnO 2 nanorods was successfully synthesized by using NH 3 ·H 2 O as a complexing agent to inhibit the Ag + intercalating into the tunnels of MnO 2 . The half-wave potential ( E 1/2 ) and limiting current density ( J lim ) of the obtained Ag/MnO 2 electrocatalysts are 0.81 V and −5.6 mA cm −2 , respectively, showing comparable ORR catalytic activity to commercial Pt/C catalysts. The excellent catalytic performances can be attributed to the presence of abundant oxygen vacancies and Mn 3+ species on the MnO 2 surface, as well as the synergistic effect between MnO 2 substrates and Ag nanoparticles. Among them, oxygen vacancies enhances the adsorption of O 2 , Mn 3+ facilitates the displacement of O 2 2− /OH − , MnO 2 inhibits the accumulation of peroxide species to improving the oxygen environment on the Ag surface and Ag accelerates the electron transfer in the whole process. This work provides a useful guide for the design of efficient Mn-based ORR electrocatalysts.

By doping graphene with iodine and ammonia, I and N co-doped graphene (ING) is prepared and used as metal free catalyst for the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) both in alkaline and acidic media. The as-prepared catalyst exhibits striking activity in alkaline with an onset potential of 0.945 V (vs. RHE) which is the same with commercial Pt/C catalyst. In acidic media the ING shows a competitive activity. In both alkaline and acidic media the ORR is four-electron process catalyzed by ING. The superior ORR performance of the ING can be attributed to the synergetic doping effect of I and N. Based on its outstanding performance the ING can work as a metal free catalyst for fuel cell with much lower cost than currently used Pt/C catalyst.

Developing transition metal-based catalysts is a feasible approach to decrease the cost of fuel cells. In this paper, we synthesized a worm-like carbon nanotubes (CNTs) encapsulated Fe 3 P and Fe 0.8 Mn 0.2 alloy based catalysts (FP/FM@CNTs) for oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) by calcination method. The precursor for the calcination was prepared by hydrothermal method. The CNTs encapsulation structure was confirmed by SEM, HRTEM, XRD, XPS and EDS tests. The electrocatalytic performances for ORR of the catalyst were examined in 0.1 M KOH electrolyte by using CV, LSV, Tafel, EIS, RDE and RRDE tests. The obtained results presented that the half-wave potential(E 1/2 ) of FP/FM@CNTs catalyzed ORR was 0.892 V (vs. RHE), the maximum current intensity and the Tafel slope of FP/FM@CNTs catalyzed ORR were superior to that of the Pt/C catalyst. The density function theory calculation ascertained that the encapsulated Fe 3 P made the carbon atoms in surface layer CNT in negative electron state that could transfer electrons easily to oxygen molecular and promote the ORR happening. On the other hand, the CNTs encapsulation structure protected the Fe 0.8 Mn 0.2 alloy and Fe 3 P from the directly contact with electrolyte and other reactants, which assured the long-term operational stability of the catalysts. The content of this paper presents a novel approach for designing high-performance catalysts.

Summary Corrosion of nanoparticles during electrocatalysis, such as oxygen reduction reaction (ORR), occurs at the nanoscale and is vital for catalyst stability. Here, using liquid cell (LC) transmission electron microscopy (TEM), we study the corrosion process of palladium@platinum (Pd@Pt) core-shell octahedra in real time and reveal that both the static local strain and the evolving curvature synergistically control the nanoscale corrosion kinetics. Specifically, in locations with tensile strain and high local curvature, the etching process is much faster. Density functional theory (DFT) calculation suggests that the dissolution potential of the Pd nanocrystal decreases as the strain increases; meanwhile, Pd atoms tend to be corroded more easily on a surface under tensile strain than on one under compressive strain. With these insights on the corrosion mechanism at the nanoscale, we subsequently designed and synthesized nanoparticles with smaller strain, and these showed higher durability in both an in situ LC study and an ex situ ORR stability test.

Cobalt (Co) is an efficient oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) catalyst but suffers from issues of easy deactivation and instability. Here, it shows that ZrO 2 can stabilize Co through interface electron coupling and enables highly efficient 4e − ORR catalysis. Porous carbon nanofibers loaded with dispersed Co-nanodots (≈10 nm, 9.63 wt%) and ZrO 2 nanoparticles are synthesized as the catalyst. The electron transfer from the metallic Co to ZrO 2 causes interface-oriented electron enrichment that promotes the activation and conversion of O 2 , improving the efficiency of 4e − transfer. Moreover, the simulation results show that ZrO 2 acts like an electron reservoir to store electrons from Co and slowly release them to the interface, solving the easy deactivation problem of Co. The catalyst exhibits a high half-wave potential (E 1/2 ) of 0.84 V, which only decreases by 3.6 mV after 10 000 cycles, showing great stability. Particularly, the enhanced spin polarization of Co in a magnetic field reinforces the interface electron coupling that increases the E 1/2 to 0.864 V and decreases the energy barrier of ORR from 0.81 to 0.63 eV, confirming that the proposed strategy is effective for constructing efficient and stable ORR catalysts.
