Green light–triggered antimicrobial cotton fabric for wastewater disinfection

T. Zhang,H. Yu,J. Li,H. Song,S. Wang,Z. Zhang,S. Chen

Water pollution by pathogenic bacteria is a major threat to human health, and less-than-ideal disinfection and antimicrobial strategies have been developed to address waterborne pathogens. A green light–triggered photocatalytic antimicrobial rose bengal (RB)–modified cotton fabric (CF) (RB-CF) was prepared for wastewater disinfection by covalently binding RB to a CF surface. The antimicrobial rates of RB-CF against gram-positive Staphylococcus aureus and gram-negative Escherichia coli were both greater than 99.99% due to the generation of singlet oxygen that inactivates microbes under green light irradiation. Most importantly, RB-CF exhibited high stability, negligible cytotoxicity, and no release of free RB during the photocatalytic process, which was the key to its long-term antimicrobial activity and use security. Its long-term antimicrobial activity was further verified by the repeated photocatalytic disinfection; more than 99.99% of bacteria were inactivated even after five cycles. Therefore, this work may offer a potential avenue to develop low-cost, non-toxic, and durable antimicrobial fabrics with great potential for industrial and health-care applications, including but not limited to water purification , wastewater disinfection, masks, and protective clothing.

Highly Permeable Polylactic Acid Membrane Grafted with Quaternary Ammonium Salt for Effective and Durable Water Disinfection

Qingyan Chen,Kai Zhao,Guoping Li,Jiyue Luo,Xin Li,Yingjie Zeng,Xiao-mao Wang

Given the increasing usage of drinking water purifiers, highly permeable membranes with strong antimicrobial functions are desperately desirable for effective and durable water disinfection. Hereby, we prepared such antimicrobial membranes by chemical grafting of quaternary ammonium salt (QAS) molecules, 3-(trimethoxysilyl)propyldimethyloctadecyl ammonium chloride (TPMMC), onto air plasma pretreated biodegradable polylactic acid (PLA) substrates. The high chemical grafting density promoted very strong and positive zeta potential charge of the resulted PLA-QAS membrane, contributing to effective and broad-spectrum antimicrobial efficiencies (>99.99%) against different microbes, including fungi and conventional and drug-resistant bacteria. The solid grafting of QAS molecules produced a durable antimicrobial performance of the PLA-QAS membrane. In addition, the pleated filter (0.45 m2) of PLA-QAS membrane showed outstanding bacteria rejection properties (>99.99%) and excellent washing durability (up to 20 m3 water) even at very high water filtration rates (up to 4 L/min). The disinfection mechanism was clarified that negatively charged bacteria could be rapidly adsorbed to positively charged PLA-QAS spinnings, followed by devastating cell membrane damage to bacterial debris, leaving a clean environment without significant biofilm and biofouling formation.

Hydrodynamic tearing of bacteria on nanotips for sustainable water disinfection

Peng Lu,Zhu Haojie,Wang Haobin,Guo Zhenbin,Wu Qianyuan,Yang Cheng,Hu Hong-Ying

Water disinfection is conventionally achieved by oxidation or irradiation, which is often associated with a high carbon footprint and the formation of toxic byproducts. Here, we describe a nano-structured material that is highly effective at killing bacteria in water through a hydrodynamic mechanism. The material consists of carbon-coated, sharp Cu(OH) 2 nanowires grown on a copper foam substrate. We show that mild water flow (e.g. driven from a storage tank) can efficiently tear up bacteria through a high dispersion force between the nanotip surface and the cell envelope. Bacterial cell rupture is due to tearing of the cell envelope rather than collisions. This mechanism produces rapid inactivation of bacteria in water, and achieved complete disinfection in a 30-day field test. Our approach exploits fluidic energy and does not require additional energy supply, thus offering an efficient and low-cost system that could potentially be incorporated in water treatment processes in wastewater facilities and rural communities.

Optimising the measurement of peracetic acid to assess its degradation during drinking water disinfection

Zhang Kejia,San Yulong,Cao Cong,Zhang Tuqiao,Cen Cheng,Zhou Xinyan

Chlorine-based compounds have been used as a disinfectant in drinking water treatment plants for decades because of their excellent sterilisation efficiency and low cost. However, the formation of disinfection by-products during chlorination is a cause for concern. Peracetic acid (PAA) is a strong oxidant with a redox potential higher than that of chlorine and does not form harmful disinfection by-products. It is thus a potential alternative for chlorine-based disinfectants. However, PAA decomposes rapidly in water at a rate that is highly affected by many factors, such as organic compounds and pH. The aim of this study is to investigate the stability of PAA during drinking water disinfection. To accomplish this, we studied methods for rapid detection of residual PAA and PAA decay in drinking water. Residual PAA was detected in water by the spectrophotometry-total chlorine reagent (SPTCR) method with a PAA concentration range of 0.090–10 mg/L ( R 2 = 0.9943). Decay tests of PAA in drinking water and other sources of water showed that the decay process conformed to the first-order kinetic model with fast and slow reactions. Among four factors, pH was the key factor in the decay process because an alkaline environment significantly promotes the decomposition of PAA. In addition, total organic carbon (TOC), conductivity, and initial PAA concentration also affected PAA decay. Experimental and statistical analyses suggested that these factors affected PAA decay in the following descending order of influence: TOC, initial PAA concentration, and conductivity. In real water matrices, the PAA decay rate increased with increasing initial PAA concentration.

Synergistic algicidal effects of combined UV-LED/chlorine treatments on Tetraselmis sp.: Optimization and mode-of-action

Diya Wen,Daoyi Chen,Yuelu Jiang

Unwanted proliferation of and adhesion by microalgae, as involved in fouling and species invasion, are important problems across many maritime operations and coastal industrial activities. The algicidal mechanisms of ultraviolet light-emitting diodes (UV-LEDs) and the synergistic algicidal effects between UV-LEDs and chlorine treatments in seawater were investigated in this study. Tetraselmis sp. was employed as the challenge organism. Five UV wavelengths (265, 280, 285, 300 and 315 nm) and three chlorine dosages (0.6, 0.8 and 1 mg L −1 ) were examined in a factorial experiment to optimize the disinfection performance achieved by combined UV-LED/chlorine treatments in seawater. Overall, the combined treatments showed a more effective inactivation of the microalgae than did the single treatments. Treatment with UV 285 combined with 0.8 mg L −1 chlorine resulted in 3.12-log inactivation at 100 mJ cm −2 (i.e. 2.34 Einsteins L -1 , 67 s). This optimal combination showed a higher inactivation rate constant and lower energy consumption (E E,2 ) than did the other treatments. The contribution of UV-LEDs, chlorine and hydroxyl radical (·OH) in the inactivation of Tetraselmis sp. by the combined UV-LED/chlorine disinfection process was investigated to illustrate the mechanism of this synergistic process, the results indicated that ·OH generated by photolysis were not the only contributors to the inactivation of the microalgae. Although a UV 300 /chlorine treatment demonstrated the highest chlorine photolysis rate, the inactivation constant of this treatment was lower than that of UV 285 /chlorine. These results demonstrated a synergistic algicidal effect of the combined disinfection system caused by exposure to the 285 nm UV-LED and low dosages of chlorine, which could provide an important basis for further developments and possibly industrial applications in the future.

Synergistic effect of combined UV-LED and chlorine treatment on Bacillus subtilis spore inactivation

Guo-Qiang Li,Zheng-Yang Huo,Qian-Yuan Wu,Yun Lu,Hong-Ying Hu

An ultraviolet (UV)-based advanced oxidation process (AOP) for disinfecting water is introduced in this paper. This study aimed to evaluate the potential of UV light-emitting diodes (UV-LEDs)/chlorine AOP (UV/Cl 2 ) for Bacillus subtilis spore inactivation. Chlorine was combined with 265 and 280 nm LEDs (UV 265 /Cl 2 , UV 280 /Cl 2 ) and investigated. The addition of 4.0 mg/L of free chlorine at pH 7.0 in the presence of 125 mJ/cm 2 of UV irradiation resulted in an additional 1.8-log reduction in UV 265 /Cl 2 and 1.5-log reduction in UV 280 /Cl 2 . There was no observed enhancement in spore inactivation with the addition of a radical scavenger, t-BuOH, which indicated the role of • OH in the synergistic effect. To quantitatively evaluate the synergism, the primary treatment with UV/Cl 2 was followed by further UV or Cl 2 treatment. After UV/Cl 2 pretreatment at different pH levels, the 265 and 280 nm LEDs treatment enhanced an approximate 0.4–0.5-log reduction compared to UV only, and Cl 2 treatment enhanced an approximate 0.7–1.1-log reduction compared to Cl 2 only. In addition, at pH 7.0, in UV 265 /Cl 2 -Cl 2 and UV 280 /Cl 2 -Cl 2 , the inactivation rate constant k increased by approximately 2 and 1.5 times, respectively. The CT for the lag phases ( CT lag ) reduced to approximately 67 and 58%, respectively. Similar results were obtained at pH 7.5 and 8.0, and in the secondary effluent. The synergistic effect on spore inactivation suggested that the pathogen inactivation efficiency of sequential UV and chlorine disinfection processes, which are commonly applied, can be significantly enhanced by adding chlorine prior to UV treatment .

Universal substrate growth of Ag-modified ReS2 as visible-light-driven photocatalyst for highly efficient water disinfection

Ying Zhang,Yuanwu Liu,Pengfei Cheng,Weiming Song,Xuyan Zhang,Shiya Rong,Xingsen Gao,Guofu Zhou,Zhang Zhang,Junming Liu

Developing highly-efficient visible-light-driven photocatalyst for water disinfection is an attractive strategy to address the current shortage of safe drinking water and environmental remediation. Since the low dependence on growth substrate and the narrow bandgap nature made ReS 2 one of the best two-dimensional (2D) materials for photocatalytic sterilization. Herein, we fabricated Ag/ReS 2 composite, a 0D/2D heterostructure, which can be grown on three universal substrates through a facile chemical vapor deposition (CVD) and thermal evaporation process. Benefiting from the vertical growth of ReS 2 nanosheets and the hybrid effect from Ag and ReS 2 , the visible-light response of Ag/ReS 2 can be greatly enhanced, exhibiting an excellent photocatalytic antibacterial efficiency towards Escherichia coli ( E. coli ) after 30 min of visible-light exposure, providing a promising environmentally friendly alternative method for water disinfection. Moreover, the universal substrate growth and good stability also endow the photocatalyst with potential applicability in various fields.

Ying Liang,Guohe Huang,Yongping Li,Yao Yao,Xiaying Xin,Xiang Li,Jianan Yin,Sichen Gao,Yuwei Wu,Xiujuan Chen,Renfei Feng

The challenge from pathogenic infections still threatens the health and life of people in developing areas. An efficient, low-cost, and abundant-resource disinfection method is desired for supplying safe drinking water . This study aims to develop a novel Ti 3+ doping TiO 2 nanoparticle decorated ceramic disk filter (Ti 3+ /TiO 2 @CDF) for point-of-use (POU) disinfection of drinking water. The production of Ti 3+ /TiO 2 @CDF was optimized to maximize disinfection efficiency and flow rate. Under optimal conditions, the log reduction value (LRV) could reach up to 7.18 and the flaw rate was 108 mL/h. The influences of environmental factors were also investigated. Natural or slightly alkaline conditions, low turbidity , and low concentration of humic acid were favorable for the disinfection of Ti 3+ /TiO 2 @CDF, while co-existing HCO 3 − ions and diatomic cations (Ca 2+ and Mg 2+ ) exhibited the opposite effect. Furthermore, the practicability and stability of Ti 3+ /TiO 2 @CDF was demonstrated. Ti 3+ /TiO 2 @CDF showed high disinfection efficiency for E. coli and S. aureus under a range of concentrations. Long-term experiment indicated that Ti 3+ /TiO 2 @CDF was stable. The underlying disinfection mechanisms were investigated and concluded as the combination of retention, adsorption, and photocatalytic disinfection. The developed Ti 3+ /TiO 2 @CDF can provide an effective and reliable disinfection tool for POU water treatment in remote area.

A visible-light-driven polythiophene/MgAl-LDH@CuxS photocathode enhanced the generation of reactive oxygen species for water disinfection

Mingyu Wang,Honglin Kuang,Lu Zhou,Mengru Shan,Sihao Jiang,Danying Ma,Shiwen Lv,Yanqing Cong,Yingqi Song,Yi Zhang

Sea urchin-like Cu x S nanoflowers were prepared on copper foam substrate by in situ thermal oxidation and hydrothermal vulcanization. Then, thiophene (Th) was copolymerized with MgAl layered double hydroxide (MgAl-LDH) on Cu x S to obtain a polythiophene (PTh)/MgAl-LDH@Cu x S composite photocathode. Under visible-light irradiation, the electrode exhibits high photocurrent response and excellent stability for 72 h. Under an applied voltage of 3 V, the photogenic carrier was effectively separated, and combined with the graphite anode to generate highly oxidizing reactive oxygen species (ROS) and active chlorine directly and indirectly, which can achieve logarithmic inactivation of 7.57 and 7.07 log 10 CFU/mL against Escherichia coli and Bacillus subtilis within 15 and 25 min, respectively. The mechanism of photoelectrocatalytic reaction for disinfection was explored through cell membrane integrity, DNA/protein leakage and active substances analysis, and a free radical capture experiment proved that O 2 ∙– and h + played key roles in the disinfection process. The purification and degradation of different actual wastewaters show that the photoelectrocatalytic system has great practical application potential in water disinfection.

Deciphering iopamidol transformation during the joint disinfection of monochloramine and peroxymonosulfate: A base-catalyzed mutual activation

Dexin Wu,Feng Yang,Di Zhao,Lulu Zhu,Ruiqi Wang,Jun Hu,Zhimin Qiang,Weiting Yu,Yuanchen Chen

The joint disinfection of monochloramine (MCA) and peroxymonosulfate (PMS) can combine the advantages of both sides; and the iodine-containing micropollutants are widely present in drinking water. For the first time, the conversion of iopamidol (IPM) was investigated in the MCA/PMS system. For IPM degradation, the observed pseudo-first-order rate constant ( k obs ) was 0.0076 min −1 , and the apparent rate constant ( k app ) was 6.14 × 10 −7  μM −2.16  min −1 . The reaction orders for MCA ( m ) and PMS ( n ) were fitted to be 1.14 and 1.02, respectively. The mutual activation of MCA and PMS was a base-catalyzed reaction, which was highly exothermic and thermodynamically favored with a free energy of − 78.74 kcal/mol. It is believed that Cl • and 1 O 2 contributed to IPM degradation. The k obs value was increased by an alkaline pH and the presence of Cl − , while reduced by the existence of NOM, HCO 3 − and NH 4 + . The N in MCA was converted to NH 4 + -N, NO 2 − -N and NO 3 − -N, and 47.0 % of I in IPM was converted to IO 3 − . In the MCA/PMS system, IPM transformation was mainly via amide hydrolysis, deiodination and substitution reaction by reactive species. The study provides an insight into the fate of iodine-containing micropollutants during the joint disinfection of MCA and PMS.

Three birds with one stone: Fe(Ⅲ)-coordinated cross-linked antibiofouling cellulose composite membrane for synergistic photodynamic and Fenton-like water disinfection

Xiaomin Liao,Qin Zhong,Zhou Xu,Hongquan Fu,Jinming Chang,HeJun Gao,Yi Chen,Yunwen Liao

The development of green and highly efficient antimicrobial filter membranes for water disinfection is crucial to public health. Photodynamic therapy (PDT), an emerging bactericidal strategy, has shown significant potential for the preparation of antimicrobial filter membranes. Unfortunately, its antibacterial efficacy is often compromised by self-quenching caused by the aggregation of photosensitizers, as well as the short diffusion length and lifespan of the reactive oxygen species (ROS) generated. Herein, a Fe(Ⅲ)-coordinated cross-linked antibiofouling cellulose composite membrane (Fe/TOCNF-TPZnPc-1.5) with significantly enhanced synergistic photodynamic and Fenton-like bactericidal performance was fabricated via a facile flow-based sequential filtration method for water disinfection. The formation of a Fe(Ⅲ)-coordinated cross-link increases the structural stability of the membrane, prevents the migration and aggregation of tetra(4-carboxyphenoxy)-phthalocyaninatozinc (ii) (TPZnPc), and also provides the Fe(Ⅲ) complexes for the accelerated Fenton-like reaction. Through synergistic photodynamic and Fenton-like reactions, the Fe/TOCNF-TPZnPc-1.5 membrane achieves rapid and effective inactivation for E. coli and B. subtilis with a lethality rate of 100 % under NIR irradiation and H 2 O 2 treatment. The primary active species responsible for bacterial inactivation are singlet oxygen species ( 1 O 2 ) and hydroxyl radicals ( OH). The disinfection performance of the Fe/TOCNF-TPZnPc-1.5 membrane in river water samples demonstrated 100 % disinfection efficiency for waterborne pathogenic bacteria. In addition, the Fe/TOCNF-TPZnPc-1.5 membrane exhibits moderate water permeance (26.6 L m −2  h −1 ), high bacteria rejection (>96 %), excellent antifouling ability, and 100 % biodegradation within 90 days. These attributes indicate significant potential for the practical application of this composite membrane in water purification.

Thermo-responsive/anti-biofouling chitosan hydrogel beads in situ decorated with silver nanoparticles for water disinfection

Huayong Luo,Juexi Zeng,Mingqi Xu,Qiongfang Tang,Tao Liu,Shuhan Wu,Shiyin Li,Hongwei Rong

The development of a sustainable and eco-friendly silver-based hybrid nanocomposite for safe and efficient point-of-use (POU) water disinfection remains a challenge. Herein, a simple and facile approach was proposed for the in situ immobilization of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) on chitosan-g-poly (sulfobetaine methacrylate) (CS-g-PSBMA) hydrogel beads, which have been achieved via graft copolymerization of sulfobetaine methacrylate along the chitosan chains followed by a drop method. The AgNPs-decorated CS-g-PSBMA hydrogel beads were characterized and their bactericidal efficacy towards Escherichia coli was evaluated concurrently with their anti-biofouling behaviors. The results indicated that the grafted PSBMA hydrogels on CS would not only enhance the immobilization of more AgNPs (122.63 mg/g material), but also restricted the silver release (only 0.015 % after the 14th day of incubation), which surpassed numerous other AgNPs-based nanocomposites for water disinfection. Moreover, the release of silver can be modulated by altering the temperature due to the thermosensitivity of PSBMA, and the maximum concentration of silver leaching in the effluent was 33.1–52.3 μg/L at 25–60 °C. Importantly, the synthesized AgNPs-based CS-g-PSBMA can exert both exceptional bactericidal and superior anti-biofouling capabilities as well as reusability features, indicating sustained antibacterial effectiveness and significant potential for practical applications in water disinfection.
