In this study, leveraging the tunable surface groups of MXene , the two-dimensional (2D) Nb 2 C T x with OH terminal (NC) was synthesized. 2D ZnIn 2 S 4 (ZIS) nanosheets were prepared with the aid of sodium citrate, enhancing the exposure ratio of active (1 1 0) facet. On this basis, 2D/2D ZnIn 2 S 4 /Nb 2 C T x heterojunctions were fabricated to improve photocatalytic hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) performance. The optimized 6 wt%Nb 2 C T x /ZnIn 2 S 4 -450 (6NC/ZIS-450) photocatalyt exhibits a remarkable HER rate of 3603 μmol g −1 h −1 , which is 10 times superior to that of the original ZnIn 2 S 4 . Its apparent quantum efficiency (AQE) at 380 nm reaches 14.9 %. Meanwhile, even after 5 rounds of HER, the activity of 2D/2D ZnIn 2 S 4 /Nb 2 C T x heterojunction remained at 90 %, far superior to that of pure ZnIn 2 S 4 (34 % and 31 %). Energy band structure analysis and density functional theory (DFT) calculation indicate that Nb 2 C T x adsorbed with OH exhibit a low work function . By serving as a hole cocatalyst, it effectively boosts the photocatalytic HER rate of ZnIn 2 S 4 /Nb 2 C T x heterojunction and inhibits the photocorrosion of ZnIn 2 S 4 . This unique insight, via hole transport highways and increased exposure of active facets, effectively enhances the activity and stability of sulfides photocatalysts .

We report the well-designed active {1 1 0} and {1 1 1} faceted Cu 2 O hollow nanospheres (Cu 2 O-HNs) for the quick removal of the high concentration pollutants in water. For the first time, these Cu 2 O-HNs combine the advantages of the active facets, hollow structure and nanostructures. The abundance of dangling Cu atoms in two active facets results in positively charged surface to effectively react with the negatively charged pollutants. The hollow structure provides the opportunity to take full use of these active sites. Consequently, the active faceted Cu 2 O-HNs demonstrate excellent adsorption and photodegradation capacities for high concentrated anionic dyes. The smallest Cu 2 O-HNs (~100 nm) can adsorb ~90% of methyl blue (MB) (100 mg L −1 ) in 10 min and degrade ~92% of MB (100 mg L −1 ) in 10 min under visible-light. In particular, a film consisting of the smallest Cu 2 O-HNs can quickly remove high concentrated organic dyes and be reused after solar light irradiation for 10 min in air, showing the promising practical application for the removal of organic pollutants.

Electrocatalytic hydrodechlorination (ECH) has been proposed as a potential technology for the effective degradation of organochlorine contaminants. In this study, a nanoscale Pd/TiC catalyst with low resistance was dip-coated onto Ti, aiming to fabricate a stable Pd/TiC/Ti electrode with enhanced ECH reactivity for efficient dechlorination. Electrochemical techniques indicated that the Pd/TiC/Ti electrode had a larger electrochemically active surface area and more rapid interfacial charge transfer than the conventional Pd/C/Ti electrode. In a batch experiment, the dechlorination rate for ECH of 2,4-dichlorobenzoic acid (2,4-DCBA, a model pollutant) by Pd/TiC/Ti was 1.3–14.5 times higher than those by Pd/C/Ti, Pd/MWCNTs/Ti, and Pd/MoS2/Ti, respectively. Scavenger experiments, ESR spin-trapping spectroscopy, and cyclic voltammetry clarified the intensified atomic H* generation by Pd/TiC/Ti. DFT calculations revealed that Pd/TiC/Ti had stronger binding ability with atomic H* (Eads: −2.89 eV vs. −2.44 eV) and 2,4-DCBA (Eads: −3.62 eV vs. −2.15 eV), respectively, when compared with Pd/C/Ti. As a result, enhanced generation of atomic H*, together with strengthened adsorption of atomic H* and 2,4-DCBA, would contribute to a faster ECH reaction. The Pd/TiC/Ti electrode retained its reactivity after 10 successive batch experiments (80 h), and showed high tolerance to the constituents in actual water matrices including lake water and river water. This study proposed a promising ECH electrode for the treatment of chlorinated organics in water matrices.

Graphical This work develops an in situ pore-forming strategy to construct cross-linked porous catalyst layers (PCL) for proton exchange membrane water electrolysis. The PCL exhibits 2.1times the electrochemical active area of conventional catalyst layers, achieving 3.8 A cm −2 @1.9 V (exceeding U.S. Department of Energy 2025 targets) and 1600-hour stability at 2 A cm −2 . Engineering catalyst layer structure is of significant importance to improve the performance and durability of proton exchange membrane water electrolysis (PEMWE), yet rare efficient design strategies has been reported. This work develops an in situ pore-making approach to construct cross-linked porous catalyst layer, which significantly improves catalyst active site utilization compared to conventional catalyst layer (CCL). The electrochemical activity area of the porous catalyst layer membrane electrode assemblies (MEA) (52.22 cm 2 mg Ir −1 ) is 2.10 times higher than that of the CCL-MEA (24.90 cm 2 mg Ir −1 ), which indicates that more active sites are exposed during pore-making process, leading to the higher utilization efficiency of the electrocatalyst. As a result, the porous catalyst layer exhibits a high current density of 3.8 A cm −2 at 1.9 V, which is exceeding the U.S. Department of Energy 2025 target (3 A cm −2 @1.9 V), and shows superior durability with no significant degradation after 1600 h of operation at a constant load of 2 A cm −2 . Scanning electron microscope analysis confirms the structural integrity of the porous catalyst layer, while cracks formed in the CCL during testing. These results highlight the benefits of the porous structure in improving mass transport, stability, and overall performance in PEMWE applications.

CuO is currently used as an effective activator for peroxymonosulfate (PMS), which exhibits complex radical, nonradical, or both activation pathways. However, there exists a knowledge gap concerning the relationship between CuO exposed facets and the PMS activation pathway, which should require further investigation. This study employed a simple and facile hydrothermal method to controllably prepare CuO samples with exposed {010} and {001} facets (referred to as CuO-010 and CuO-001, respectively). The main aim was to further study the facet-dependent PMS activation mechanism. The experimental results showed that the CuO-001 exhibited significantly higher activation efficiency than the CuO-010 due to the different surface atomic arrangement. Furthermore, scavenging experiments and EPR analyses revealed that CuO-010 exhibited both radical ( SO 4 • − and •OH) and non-radical ( 1 O 2 ) pathways, synergistically degraded tetracycline (TC) and 4-nitrophenol (4-NP). Conversely, the CuO-001 displayed non-radical ( 1 O 2 ) and Cu(Ⅲ) intermediates, collaborating to oxidize the degradation of TC and 4-NP. More importantly, the generated 1 O 2 species and Cu(Ⅲ) intermediates exhibited a preference for reacting with amino or phenolic compounds containing electron-rich functional groups. Moreover, the CuO-001 also showed excellent resistance to anion interference, stability, and compatibility of a wide pH range. The outcomes of this study provide new insights into the comprehensiveness facet-dependent activation of PMS and the design of efficient metal oxide catalysts using the facet strategy for effective degradation of amino/phenolic pollutants in wastewater.

s The development of heterostructure catalysts with high activity and reusability is of great significance for the green hydrogen production from NaBH 4 . In this paper, a novel CoNi-CoO x nanoparticle with Schottky heterostructure (UCC-30) was synthesized using a high-temperature annealing method. The successful preparation of catalysts with varying contents of CoO was achieved through the precise control of ultrasonication conditions. The experimental results demonstrated that the CoNi-CoO x catalysts exhibited remarkable catalytic performance and were capable of significantly reducing the activation energy for NaBH 4 hydrolysis, with an activation energy of 24.61 ± 0.51 kJ/mol. The hydrogen production rate (HGR) of NaBH 4 + UCC-30 reached 1245 mL min −1 g cat − 1 at 298 K, which was conspicuously higher than that of similar non-precious metal catalysts. Microstructural studies have demonstrated that CoNi-CoO x has a considerable catalytically active area in addition to Schottky moieties, which collectively contribute to the creation of multiple active sites, thereby improving the catalytic efficiency. Moreover, the catalytic capacity of NaBH 4 +UCC-30 remained at 81.9 % after five cycles at 298 K, indicating potential application in practical hydrogen production cases. It is noteworthy that the introduction of the Schottky structure can adjust the catalytic effect of CoNi alloy materials, thereby providing guidance for the future design and fabrication of efficient catalysts for hydrogen production and other energy related research areas.

Exploiting facile and cheap synthetic methods to prepare PtRu nanocatalysts with superior activity and stability is crucial for the commercial applications of direct methanol fuel cells. In this communication, PtRu nanodendrites, which diameter is 30 ∼ 50 nm, were synthesized using Ni nanoparticles as both templates and reducing agents in an aqueous solution at room temperature. Home-made graphene was used as support to prepare PtRu nanodendrites/graphene catalyst. The as-prepared PtRu nanodendrites/graphene catalyst shows a larger electrochemical active area, a greater resistance to CO poisoning, and much better activity and stability for methanol oxidation than the commercial Pt/C catalyst.

The non-enzymatic glucose sensor based on Cu 2 O is of low prices and easy to control morphology, but its conductivity is poor. Herein, we successfully synthesized a dendritic Cu-Cu 2 O composite nanoparticles by potentiostatic electrodeposition method. Compared with current Cu/Cu 2 O-based glucose sensors, the non-enzymatic glucose sensor fabricated using Cu/Cu 2 O in this study features a unique dendritic structure with three-dimensional fractal characteristics that significantly increases the electrochemical active area (ECSA). Moreover, its in situ electrodeposition fabrication requires no precious metals or carbon carriers, making it low-cost and highly controllable. The morphology was controlled by different deposition time and we investigated their capability for non-enzymatic glucose detection through electrochemical means. The Cu-Cu 2 O electrode deposited for 45 s exhibited the widest linear range of 0.05–24.65 mM, while the 15-second deposition sample showed the highest sensitivity of 837.57 μA mM −1 cm −2 . All obtained electrodes displayed significantly higher selectivity for glucose compared to other interfering substances and excellent stability.

Nitrogen-doped carbon nanotubes (N-CNTs) prepared by carbonization of polypyrrole nanotubes (PPy-NTs) are used as supports. Pt–CeO 2 /N-CNTs electrocatalysts are successfully prepared by in-situ growth of Pt and CeO 2 nanoparticles (NPs) via a one-step coupling method of co-deposition and ethylene glycol reduction. Through structural characterization and electrochemical tests of the prepared electrocatalysts, the effects of preparation conditions on the structure of the electrocatalysts and their electrocatalytic activity for methanol oxidation were systematically investigated. The results verify that the Pt–CeO 2 /N-CNTs electrocatalysts were prepared using N-CNTs calcined at 700 °C as a support and 15 mM alkali concentration. They have the largest electrochemical active area and methanol oxidation mass activity of 85 m 2 g −1 (Pt) and 722 A g −1 (Pt), respectively. Furthermore, the electrochemical stability and anti-CO poisoning performance of the electrocatalysts are significantly better than those of the commercial Pt/C electrocatalysts. The highly-dispersed Pt and CeO 2 in Pt–CeO 2 /N-CNTs, a large number of N sites, and the synergistic action of Pt, CeO 2 , and N-CNTs result in a catalyst with excellent electrocatalytic activity, stability, and resistance to CO poisoning. The support structure and the dispersion of Pt and CeO 2 can be controlled by changing the preparation conditions, which provides a basis for the industrial application of direct methanol fuel cells.

High fabrication cost, chemical instability, and complex immobilization of enzyme molecules are critical issues of enzyme-based glucose sensors. Designing state-of-the-art, binder-free, and non-enzymatic glucose sensing probes plays an imperative role to cope with the aforementioned issues. 3D carbonaceous nanomaterials coated with transition metal vanadates (TMVs) are a favorable biomimetic platform for glucose quantification. Peculiar hierarchical structure, enhanced conductivity, synergistic interaction, multiple oxidation states, and high catalytic activity would make such composite a potential contender for non-enzymatic glucose sensing. Herein, 3D helical-shaped carbon nanocoils (CNCs) are grown on nickel foam (NF) via chemical vapor deposition method to prepare a robust CNCs/NF scaffold. Then, a hydrothermal route is followed to grow interconnected free-standing Ni 3 V 2 O 8 nanosheets (NSs) on CNCs/NF scaffold. This novel and binder-free Ni 3 V 2 O 8 NSs/CNCs/NF hierarchical composite possesses superior electrochemical active area (ECSA) and exceptional electrochemical efficacy. Amperometric analysis exhibits extremely prompt detection time (0.1 s), elevated sensitivity (5214 µA mM −1 cm −2 ), and low detection limit (0.04 µM). Developed sensor demonstrates appreciable recoveries (93.3 to 103.3%) regarding glucose concentration in human serum. The appealing analytical results show that deployment of a 3D helical-shaped hierarchical smart scaffold can be an effective strategy for developing efficient and advanced non-enzymatic glucose sensors.

The problems of poor electrocatalytic activity and CO tolerance and high Pt-loading of the Pt-based catalysts are still needed to be solved for direct methanol fuel cells. In this study, porous MoS 2 /nitrogen-doped carbon (MoS 2 /CN X ) as Pt supports/co-catalyst for methanol oxidation reaction (MOR) is successfully prepared by using waste bagasse as carbon source. Various material characterization techniques and electrochemical tests are performed to investigate the relationship between structural characteristics and MOR activity. The highly porous structure of CN X can provide abundant binding sites for growing well-dispersed MoS 2 with coral-reef structure, which should facilitate the exposure of MoS 2 edge to improve co-catalytic activity of MoS 2 /CN X . Pt/MoS 2 /CN X displays a higher mass activity (1030.2 mA mg pt −1 ) than those of Pt/MoS 2 /C (710.1 mA mg pt −1 ) and commercial Pt/C (405.4 mA mg pt −1 ), owing to that MoS 2 /CN X can afford abundant attachment sites to anchor Pt to enlarge the available electrochemically active area (111.2 m 2 g −1 pt ) for MOR. With the introduction of porous CN X , more active sites on MoS 2 edges are exposed out to dissociate water molecule for eliminating adsorbed CO-species on the active sites of Pt, which is conductive to enhance the durability and CO tolerance of Pt/MoS 2 /CN X . Furthermore, MoS 2 /CN X with high specific surface area (451.38 m 2 g −1 ) can offer sufficient oxygen-containing functional groups to facilitate the oxidation of intermediates (CO-species) on the active Pt sites, which can also promote the accessibility of methanol to the electroactive surface. These results provide a promising strategy for the design of highly active Pt support/co-catalyst to minimize Pt usage.

Electrocatalytic nitrogen reduction reaction (NRR) for the synthesis of ammonia (NH 3 ) is one of the green and mild methods of artificial nitrogen fixation, promising as an alternative to replace the existing industrial process. Under the requirements of green chemistry and sustainable development, the design and development of highly active and stable electrocatalysts is very important for improved synthesis performance. Mimicking from the natural nitrogenase, Fe and Mo based catalysts have attracted much attention due to their superior catalytic performance for N 2 adsorption and activation. In this work, an interfacial engineering strategy has been used to prepare a Fe, Mo-bimetallic electrocatalyst for the electrosynthesis of NH 3 . In detail, the pre-pyrolyzed biochar-based Fe 2 O 3 composites were decorated with nano-flowered MoS 2 /MoO 2 hybrids by a solvothermal process (MoS 2 /MoO 2 @Fe 2 O 3 /BC). As confirmed by the extensive characterization, the further modification not only introduced functional counterparts into the electrocatalysts but also regulated the morphology of the nanostructure. The electrochemical tests showed that the highest NH 3 yield rate of MoS 2 /MoO 2 @Fe 2 O 3 /BC was 4.87 μg h − 1 cm −2 and highest FE was 16.5% in 0.1 M Na 2 SO 4 . The catalytic stability and durability were also presented in the longtime electrolysis and cycling experiments. The improved catalytic performance of decorated catalyst, as evidenced by the comparison with Fe 2 O 3 /BC, is attributed to the increased electrocatalytic active area, the moderated hydrophilicity, and the synergistic effect of Fe, Mo-bimetallic active sites. This study provides a new perspective for the design and development of low-cost transition metal complexes as electrocatalysts for nitrogen reduction reactions.
