A micropump induces the flow of its surrounding fluids and is extremely promising in a variety of applications such as chemical sensing or mass transportation. However, it is still challenging to manipulate its pumping direction. In this study, we examine a binary micropump based on perovskite and poly[(2-methoxy-5-ethylhexyloxy)-1,4-phenylenevinylene] (MEHPPV). The micropump is operational under the influence of light. Light exhibits significant versatility in controlling the pumping phenomenon of the micropump. It governs the start and stop and also regulates the velocity and directions. The direction control signifies immense opportunities for the development of micropumps with unprecedented pumping behaviors and functions (such as heartbeat-like pumping, rectification, and amplification). This makes them potentially useful in various fields. Hence, it is expected that the micropump reported in the current study could act as a key step towards the further development of more sophisticated micropumps for diverse applications.

Preventing infections and managing excessive exudate in dynamic joints are vital for effective wound treatment. Accurately fitting dressings to wound shapes remains a significant challenge, which can adversely affect both healing and patient comfort. This study introduces a self-pumping dressing with tailored shape and tensile properties. This dressing channels excessive wound fluid in a unidirectional manner, achieved by electrospinning hydrophobic nanofibers embedded with silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) onto a hydrophilic 3D-printed patch featuring a kirigami structure. By systematically adjusting parameters-cutting length l, horizontal spacing d, and vertical spacing ℎ, we enabled the elongation of the 3D-printed patch to range from 26% to 244%. Our personalized self-pumping dressings demonstrated effective antibacterial activity, unidirectional fluid transmission, and biocompatibility, thereby accelerating wound healing. This research establishes a promising pathway for personalized and precise local wound care.

Materials following Murray’s law are of significant interest due to their unique porous structure and optimal mass transfer ability. However, it is challenging to construct such biomimetic hierarchical channels with perfectly cylindrical pores in synthetic systems following the existing theory. Achieving superior mass transport capacity revealed by Murray’s law in nanostructured materials has thus far remained out of reach. We propose a Universal Murray’s law applicable to a wide range of hierarchical structures, shapes and generalised transfer processes. We experimentally demonstrate optimal flow of various fluids in hierarchically planar and tubular graphene aerogel structures to validate the proposed law. By adjusting the macroscopic pores in such aerogel-based gas sensors, we also show a significantly improved sensor response dynamics. In this work, we provide a solid framework for designing synthetic Murray materials with arbitrarily shaped channels for superior mass transfer capabilities, with future implications in catalysis, sensing and energy applications.

Soft-bodied aquatic organisms exhibit extraordinary navigation and mobility in liquid environments which inspiring the development of biomimetic actuators with complex movements. Stimulus-responsive soft materials including hydrogels and shape-memory polymers are replacing traditional rigid parts that leading to dynamic and responsive soft actuators. In this study, we took inspiration from water strider to develop a biomimetic actuator for targeted stimulation and pH sensing in the gastrointestinal tract. We designed a soft and water-based Janus adhesive hydrogel patch that attaches to specific parts of the intestine and responds to pH changes through external stimulation. The hydrogel patch that forms the belly of the water strider driver incorporates an inverse opal microstructure that enables pH responsive behavior. The hydrogel patch on the water strider's leg uses a sandwich structure of Cu particles to convert light into heat and bend under infrared light to mimic the water strider's leg simulating the efficient and steady movement of the water strider's leg which transporting the biological fluid in one direction. This miniature bionic actuator demonstrates controlled adhesion and unidirectional biofluid delivery capabilities, proving its potential for targeted stimulus response and pH sensing in the gastrointestinal tract, thus opening up new possibilities for medical applications in the growing field of soft actuators.

The improper management of wound exudate around the diabetic wound bed is one of the major factors leading to delay diabetic wound healing. However, the limited water absorption of single-layer conventional dressings unavoidably maintains excessive exudate in the diabetic wound bed. Herein, a novel diabetic wound dressing is reported for achieving rapid wound healing by electrospinning hydrophobic nanofibers on a hydrophilic modified non-woven fabric. The double-layer structure of the self-pumping dressing possesses unidirectional fluid transportation to divert excessive exudate away from diabetic wounds, ultimately promoting wound healing. The hydrophilic modified non-woven fabric provides water absorption and moisture retention to absorb excess exudate passing through the hydrophobic nanofiber, thereby preventing the wound bed from rewetting. Moreover, the formation of depressions on the hydrophobic nanofiber surfaces serves as water channels to further drain wound exudate from the wound bed. In vivo wound studies confirm that the self-pumping dressing exhibits excellent unidirectional wound exudate delivery and wound moisturization. Thus, diabetic wound healing shows a low inflammatory response and excellent wound healing quality. This self-pumping dressing exhibits clinical significance to design and fabricate a next-generation dressing for diabetic wound healing.

Wearable electrochemical sensors have shown potential for personal health monitoring due to their ability to detect biofluids non-invasively at the molecular level. Smart fibers with high flexibility and comfort are currently ideal for fabricating electrochemical sensors, but little research has focused on fluid transport at the human-machine interface, which is of great significance for continuous and stable monitoring and skin comfort. Here, we report an electrochemical sensing fiber with a special core-sheath structure, whose outer layer is wound by nanofibers with a hierarchical Fermat helix structure which has excellent moisture conductivity, and the inner layer is based on CNT fibers covered by three-dimensional reduced graphene oxide folds which have good sensing properties after modification of active materials such as enzymes and selective membranes. This kind of fiber enables efficient sweat capture thus only 0.1 μL of sweat is required to activate the device, and it responses very fast (1.5 s). The fibers were further integrated into the garment to build a wireless sweat detection system, enabling stable monitoring of six physiological markers in sweat (glucose, lactate, Na+, K+, Ca2+, pH). This work provides a feasible proposal for future personalized medicine and the construction of "smart sensing garments".
