Chronic wounds, which require prolonged healing periods, pose significant impacts on individuals with diabetes, vascular diseases, and high blood pressure. Simultaneous drainage and monitoring of wound exudate are vital for advanced wound management. However, recently reported smart dressings either lack integration of wound cleaning and monitoring functions or fail to achieve dynamic in situ monitoring of wound status, which hinders their ability to meet the demands of wound care. In this study, a smart bandage is introduced, which integrates a biocompatible liquid diode membrane with an ultrasensitive 3D polyaniline mesh (M-PANI)-based pH biosensor. The smart bandage allows for unidirectional drainage of wound exudate while dynamically sensing the wound pH environment. Specifically, the proposed smart bandage effectively cleans excessive wound exudate while providing real-time information on the wound status during the drainage process. The M-PANI-based pH biosensor demonstrates a high sensitivity of 61.5 mV/pH and a wide pH detection range from 4.0 to 10.0, encompassing the pH range of normal and infected wounds. Moreover, the sensing module exhibits excellent stability after 48 hours of dynamic testing and 28 days of storage, with only a 4.8% decline in the detected signal, and high repeatability with a device-to-device relative standard deviation (RSD) of 3.1%. To evaluate the practicality of this smart bandage, simulated skin and rats have been employed, and the results indicate the immense potential of this smart bandage for clinical applications. In conclusion, the present smart bandage demonstrates considerable promise for wound exudate cleaning and monitoring in advanced wound care and offers a promising method for home-based wound management.

With the widespread utilization of moist wound dressings, the extended healing time and increased risk of wound infection caused by excessively moist environments have garnered significant attention. The development of hydrogel dressings that can effectively control the wound moisture level and promote healing is very important. Inspired by the pore-opening perspiration effect of the skin, this study constructed an injectable dual-network hydrogel, CMCS-OSA/AG/MXene, by the composition of a dynamic covalent network of carboxymethyl chitosan and oxidized sodium alginate based on the Schiff base and hydrogen bond network of the thermosensitive low-melting-point agar with the advantage of the upper critical solution temperature (UCST) effect. Under near-infrared (NIR) light stimulation, the CMCS-OSA/AG/MXene hydrogel shows characteristics conducive to rapid removal of wound exudate while maintaining an appropriate moist environment for the wound and excellent antibacterial effects with its photothermal responses. The excellent conductivity of the hydrogel can also promote cell proliferation under external electrical stimulation (ES). Further validation through animal experiments on a full-thickness skin defect model demonstrates the excellent capability of CMCS-OSA/AG/MXene in accelerating wound healing. This work provides an innovative approach to the development of injectable hydrogel dressing materials with inherent drainage functionality and shows a new avenue to wound moisture control and wound healing promotion.

Wearable wound exudate sensors hold great promise for providing dynamic measurements of valuable biomarkers. However, no existing sensors are able to achieve the fully integrated, skin-on, and dynamic detection of raw wound exudate oxygen (O2), which is closely related to wound conditions and also essential for wound healing. Here, we report a fully integrated wearable biomimetic microfluidic wound tracker, capable of skin-on biomimetic microfluidic wound exudate sampling, dynamic monitoring of wound exudate O2 in addition to wound exudate uric acid, lactate, pH, and temperature, and wireless control through the seamless integration of specially designed microfluidic, sensing, and electronic modules. We test the performance of the device in both bacterium-inoculated and uninoculated wounds using mouse models. We further assess its potential for wound management in the healing process of infected diabetic mouse wounds through controlled experiments related to local hyperbaric O2 treatment.

Wearable plant sensors can continuously monitor the material absorption and health status of a plant, thereby providing data that can be used to provide precise crop management. Herein, we describe a noninvasive wearable electrochemical sensor designed for monitoring plant guttation that is capable of detecting trace levels of neonicotinoid insecticides, salicylic acid, and pH. The sensor electrodes are prepared using an improved laser-induced graphene (LIG) printing method, with which a single set (six sensors) can be fabricated in only 15.6 s. Leveraging the high surface area and conductivity of LIG, trace-level electrochemical testing for neonicotinoid insecticides, salicylic acid, and pH can be achieved without the need for electrode surface modification. When the sensors are combined with a guttation collection module, the repeated collection of the guttation fluid becomes possible. The sensor weighs only 0.1 g and can be connected to a portable electrochemical workstation and smartphone for real-time on-site data collection. The practical value of the sensor was validated by monitoring the guttation fluid produced by rice, placed under stress through the application of neonicotinoid insecticide, and real-time pH calibration. This noninvasive wearable sensor for monitoring plant guttation enables the real-time detection of target substances, avoids plant stress caused by sensor intrusion, and provides a new direction for the future development of wearable plant sensors.

Heavily exuding wounds are difficult to heal due to the accumulation of a large amount of exudates and the difficulty in efficient delivery of drugs by conventional wound dressings. Herein, inspired by the microstructure and function of octopus sucker (OS) and tree trunk (TT), we propose a bioinspired strategy to fabricate novel bioinspired OS&TT bilayered wound dressing, assembled by a lower OS-like nanofiber membrane with concave convex arrays and an upper TT-like nanofiber sponge with vertically aligned pores. The integration of bioinspired concave arrays and vertically aligned pores endows the bioinspired OS&TT dressing with dual vertical suction property, enabling effective drainage of significant amount of accumulated liquid. Moreover, the bioinspired convex arrays facilitate distinct drug reverse delivery, achieving a drug delivery efficiency exceeding 88.27 %. In vivo heavily exuding wound treatment results indicate that, the bioinspired OS&TT dressing can alleviate tissue edema, decrease the contents of proinflammatory cytokines, and accelerate wound healing due to the unique dual vertical suction of exudates. When treating the bacteria-infected wound, benefiting from the reverse delivery of antimicrobial ε-polylysine to efficiently kill bacteria, the bioinspired OS&TT dressing shows a better wound healing effect than the dressing with inefficient drug delivery capacity.

Cotton gauze is commonly used in initial emergency care. However, its high hydrophilicity and limited clotting capacity can lead to the excessive absorption of blood, resulting in unnecessary blood loss . Herein, an amphiphilic Janus cotton gauze with excellent moisture management and enhanced blood coagulation has been developed via in situ generating bioactive glass (BG) onto the cotton gauze (CG), and then attaching cardanol (CA) onto one side of the BG-loaded CG (CG@BG) via click reaction. The Janus gauze (CA-CG@BG) has asymmetric wetting properties with a hydrophilic side (CA-CG@BG HL ) and a hydrophobic side ( HB CA-CG@BG). When applied to hemostatic , the porous and active BG on CA-CG@BG HL can rapidly initiate coagulation cascade to form a robust thrombus . CA on HB CA-CG@BG can entangled with each other, creating a hydrophobic barrier that prevents blood from flowing out. The hemostatic performance of CA-CG@BG is superior to that of CG in both rats and pigs . Interestingly, CA-CG@BG possesses unidirectional exudate removal. When applied to wound healing , the exudate can penetrate the hydrophobic HB CA-CG@BG to the hydrophilic CA-CG@BG HL , resulting in faster wound healing than CG. CA-CG@BG exhibits excellent cytocompatibility and hemocompatibility . This unique Janus dressing shows promise as a potential material for clinical applications in the future.

The ionic environment has a strong influence on the bioelectricity of skin, which is also present in the wound healing process. Inspired by this, we proposed a mechanism for hydrogel-based dressings to respond to endogenous electric fields through exudate absorption and conducted a verification study using a typical hydrogel, namely, polyacrylamide and sodium alginate (PAM–SA) hydrogels, as an example. Theoretical calculations showed that the PAM–SA hydrogels could absorb and orient the various electrolytes of exudate in the hydrogel at the wound site, contributing to the reconstruction of the electric field at the wound site. During the treatment process, this effect significantly accelerated the healing process of the rat epidermis, which exceeded the conventional dressing in terms of healing speed and efficacy, and the wounds on the complete layer of rat skin (wound area: 1.13 cm2) could be rapidly repaired within 10 days. Revealing the electrophysiological behavior of PAM–SA dressings during wound healing can help further improve the design model, the optimization concept, and development paths for the bioelectrical structures of modern dressings and bioelectrical stimulation in wound healing.

Diabetic wounds, characterized by excessive exudate accumulation and dysregulated inflammation, pose a global healthcare challenge due to their persistent non-healing nature. Traditional therapies often fail to simultaneously address three critical healing requirements: precise exudate management, coordinated inflammation-immune modulation, and pro-regenerative microenvironment establishment. Here, we present an innovative self-pumping Janus fibrous dressing integrating curcumin-loaded polycaprolactone nanofibers with cotton gauze. Its gradient architecture enables spontaneous exudate drainage and dynamic microenvironment modulation, establishing an optimal milieu for accelerated wound healing. Comprehensive in vitro investigations validate the dressing’s multifunctionality, including sensitive colorimetric pH response, antibacterial properties (>99 % inhibition against S. aureus ), and antioxidant capabilities (>90 % DPPH radical scavenging). In vivo studies in a diabetic mice model demonstrate the dressing’s superior wound healing efficacy, with ∼47 % reduction in wound edge maceration, mitigated inflammatory responses, and enhanced angiogenesis compared to commercial cotton dressings. This novel approach provides a promising foundation for the development of advanced wound dressings tailored for the management and healing of chronic wounds.

Endogenous electric field (EF) originating from differences in ionic gradients plays a decisive role in the wound healing process. Based on this understanding, a self-manipulating sodium ion gradient-based endogenic electrical stimulation dressing (smig-EESD) is developed to achieve passive, non-invasive, endogenic electrical stimulation of wounds, which avoids the side effects of electrode occupancy, electrochemical reactions, and thermal effects present in traditional exogenous electrical stimulation. smig-EESD reduced the potential at the center of the wound by specifically absorbing Na+ in the exudate, ultimately strengthening the wound endogenous EF. Importantly, smig-EESD converted the active transport dependent on Na + /K + -ATPase into passive diffusion by adsorbing extracellular matrix Na+, and the saved ATP consumption promoted tissue repair process. smig-EESD regulated innate and adaptive immune responses by upregulating the secretion of multiple cytokines, thereby suppressing injury-associated inflammatory responses and reducing scar formation. smig-EESD reveals an endogenic electrical stimulation strategy that is independent of electrodes and circuits, and provides new insights into the future development of electronic medicine.

Exudate management is of significant clinical value for the treatment of acute wound. Various wound dressings have been developed to restore the function of injured tissues and promote wound healing, but proper exploiting the healing factors inside exudate and achieving anti-adhesion wound care remains a challenge. Herein, we present a novel multi-functional composite dressing (MCD) by coupling supernatant lyophilized powder of mesenchymal stem cells (MSC-SLP) with a sandwich-structured wound dressing (SWD). The developed MCDs demonstrated unique unidirectional drainage capability, stable anti-adhesion characteristics, and improved wound healing performance. The designed SWD with both superhydrophobic inner surface and liquid-absorption ability of mid layer enables the dressings exhibit desired anti-adhesion property to neoformative granulation tissues, favorable shielding effect to exogenous bacteria, as well as appropriate exudate-retaining capability and unidirectional exudate-absorption property. The introduction of MSC-SLP in SWD was demonstrated to further improve wound healing quality. Compared to medical gauze, the synergic effect of SWD and MSC-SLP significantly accelerates wound healing rate by over 30%, avoids tissue avulsion when changing dressings, and produces a flat-smooth closure surface. More importantly, the wound treated with MCDs presents more skin accessory organs and blood vessels in regenerated tissues than other groups. In vivo/vitro biocompatibility evaluations indicated little toxicity, demonstrating the biosecurity of the developed dressings. The proposed method offers great potential in clinical applications particularly for chronic wound treatments.

Bacteria-infected wound often emerges with accumulation of dense exudates and toxins such as lipopolysaccharide (LPS) and peptidoglycan (PGN) released by bacteria, creating a vicious cycle of nutrient enrichment, bacterial proliferation, and toxin-induced inflammation that aggravates infection. While most current strategies focus primarily on antibacterial activity, they often neglect the critical roles of exudate clearance and inflammation control. Here, a wood-based biopatch (pro-bioP) is designed to accelerate bacteria-infected wound healing through a photothermal-triggered programmed therapeutic strategy. This approach integrates photothermal bacteria-killing, photothermal enhanced exudate drainage, and capture of LPS or PGN to mitigate excessive inflammation. Both in vitro and in vivo results demonstrate that pro-bioP exhibits potent antibacterial efficacy, efficient removal of viscous exudates, and strong anti-inflammatory activity, thereby promoting rapid tissue repair. As mentioned above, the pro-bioP provides a strategy for wound therapy with bacterial infection and accompanying inflammation.

Excessive exudates around the wound often lead to severe infections and prolonged nonhealing of the wound, and various dressings have been studied to solve this medical problem. Herein, we present novel Janus polyurethane (PU) sponge dressings with anisotropic surface wettability and unidirectional liquid transportation capability for wound healing. The specific wettability dressings were fabricated by immobilized superhydrophobic silica (SiO 2 ) nanoparticles onto one surface of the superhydrophilic PU sponges with the assistance of polydopamine (PDA). Due to the draining force provided by the superhydrophilic part, the liquid could be transported unidirectionally through the superhydrophobic surface without wetting it. Based on this advantage, it was demonstrated that the Janus PU sponges could act as biomedical dressings to solve the problem of excessive wetting between the dressing and the wound, reduce the risk of infection, and accelerate the efficiency of the wound healing process. Thus, we believe that the novel Janus dressing is ideal for the management of excessive exudates around the wound and highly desirable for clinical applications.
