Aluminum phosphate (AP) shows great potential to replace formaldehyde-based adhesives in the wood industry, except for its weak hygroscopic resistance and low wet bonding strength. This study chose PVA as an AP modifier to prepare a PVA–AP organic–inorganic hybrid adhesive (PAP). The preparation, bonding mechanism and heat resistant property of PAP were studied by using X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), Fourier transforms infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), X-ray diffraction (XRD), thermogravimetry-differential scanning calorimetry (TG-DSC), nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The result showed that covalent bonds between PVA and AP were built. The mechanical properties of PAP improved remarkably; the dry and wet bonding strength are 2.28 and 0.79 MPa with 15.2% and 690% increment, respectively, compared to the control samples. The thermostabilities of PAP and plywood samples were improved. In conclusion, PVA could effectively improve the hygroscopic resistance and low wet bonding strength of AP adhesives.

The enhancement of cellulose utilization in agricultural by-products, such as bagasse, holds significant importance in augmenting the value of secondary agricultural products. However, cellulose-based materials have limited application potential owing to their low strengths under wet and wet-low-temperature conditions. Improved mechanical properties of cellulose-based materials at wet and low temperatures can significantly enhance their suitability for application in cold chain processes. Furthermore, the effects of wet cryogenic conditions on cellulose-based materials are not well understood. In this study, composite films composed entirely of biomass are prepared via the co-solubilization of lignin and bagasse cellulose and then cured via hot pressing, which increases the wet and wet low-temperature strengths of the films. Furthermore, the mechanism by which cellulose/ lignin content influences the wet-low-temperature defects of films was investigated. Lignin self-polymerizes and hot pressing causes cross-linking in the cellulose-based films, which improves their performance in wet low-temperature environments. Furthermore, the micromorphologies, specific surface areas, and moisture distribution patterns of the cellulose films after wet -low-temperature treatment were investigated. The results indicate that cross-linking prevents large amounts of micro-nano scale free-water from entering the cellulose-based material, thereby preventing the formation of ice crystals at low temperatures, which can damage the microstructure. The results of this study can be used to develop bagasse cellulose/cellulose-based materials for applications in humid and low-temperature environments.

In the present work, bagasse hemicelluloses were crosslinked using citric acid as a nontoxic crosslinking agent to improve the wet strength of hemicelluloses/SPI composite films at moderate relative humidity (RH). Fourier transform infrared and thermal analysis confirmed the formation of ester crosslinks between hemicelluloses and citric acid and led to lower the degradation temperature. The wet tensile strength properties of the citric acid crosslinked hemicelluloses/SPI films in 50 − 95% RH was improved significantly, compared to the uncross-linked films. Particularly, the results indicated that the films crosslinked under 0.44 degrees of substitution showed the best comprehensive properties among all films. However, excessive addition of citric acid in the composite films might decrease the compatibility of the films and have negative effects on their performance. This study provides an effective pathway for preparation of hemicelluloses/SPI composite films with improved wet strength properties, which have a potential as packaging material for food application.

Cellulose materials have poor wet strength and are susceptible to acidic or basic environments. Herein, we developed a facile strategy to modify bacterial cellulose (BC) with a genetically engineered Family 3 Carbohydrate-Binding Module (CBM3). To assess the effect of BC films, water adsorption rate (WAR), water holding capacity (WHC), water contact angle (WCA), and mechanical and barrier properties were determined. The results showed that CBM3-modified BC film exhibited significant strength and ductility improvement, reflecting improved mechanical properties of the film. The excellent wet strength (both in the acidic and basic environment), bursting strength, and folding endurance of CBM3-BC films were due to the strong interaction between CBM3 and fiber. The toughness of CBM3-BC films reached 7.9, 28.0, 13.3, and 13.6 MJ/m 3 , which were 6.1, 1.3, 1.4, and 3.0 folds over the control for conditions of dry, wet, acidic, and basic, respectively. In addition, its gas permeability was reduced by 74.3 %, and folding times increased by 56.8 % compared with the control. The synthesized CBM3-BC films may hold promise for future applications in food packaging, paper straw, battery separator, and other fields. Finally, the in situ modification strategy used to BC can be successfully applied in other functional modifications for BC materials.

Driven by sustainable development goals, the wood-based panel industry increasingly favors renewable biomass-based and formaldehyde-free adhesives. Saccharides, owing to their renewable environmental friendliness and high reactivity, have garnered attention for green adhesive development. However, existing saccharide-based adhesives face challenges due to demanding curing conditions (hot-pressing temperature ≥160 °C), limiting their industrial application. In this study, a fructose and toluene-4-sulfonic acid adhesive (FT adhesive) was prepared by a simple one-pot process. FT adhesive can be hot-pressed at 110 °C to prepare plywood in line with the China National Standard GB/T 9846–2015 (wet strength ≥0.7 MPa). Compared with other saccharide-based adhesives, FT adhesives show superior curing efficiency while maintaining high bonding strength. During the synthesis phase, fructose reacts with toluene-4-sulfonic acid at lower temperatures to produce various active compounds, including 5-HMF and its derivatives, formic acid, acetic acid, and furan compounds. These compounds undergo condensation reactions during high-temperature curing, forming polyfurans, humin polymers, and other insoluble polymers predominantly bonded by C–O–C, C–O, and C═O linkages. Additionally, toluene-4-sulfonic acid acts as a catalyst and an enhancer in both synthesis and curing phases, facilitating the conversion and cross-linking of 5-HMF and its derivatives. This process results in a robust and dense network structure, significantly enhancing the adhesive performance of FT adhesives at lower curing temperatures (110–130 °C). This research offers insights into the development of efficient and environmentally friendly saccharide-adhesives for wood-based panels.

Formaldehyde-free liquid adhesives derived from biomass are attractive candidates to petroleum-based counterparts. However, developing solid bio-adhesive with excellent wet strength and bonding performances remains a lasting challenge. Here, we report a bio-composite sheet consisting of soybean flour , paper, and cross-linking agent (Polyamidoamine-epichlorohydrin, PAE), and its wet strength and bonding performances was evaluated by paper straw and plywood application. The covalent crosslinking by the reaction of soybean protein and PAE plays a major role in the enhancement of various properties of the cured bio-composite sheet. The tensile stress of cured bio-composite sheet was only lower than the prototype sample 14.5% after 100 ℃ water soaking treatment for 2 h. Paper straw rolled from the bio-composite sheet displayed boiling water stable at the same condition, while had better flexural strength and natural degradability than the plastic straw. Bonding strength of plywood boned with bio-composite sheet reached 1.38 MPa, which was exceeded 97.1% than the requirement of the Chinese National Standard GB/T 9846–2015 for interior plywood. Given the simple and general strategy, the products based on bio-composite sheet can potentially be a new approach on the use of biomass adhesives, which also be a suitable solution to solve the environmental challenges (e.g., formaldehyde) in the field of biomass-based composites.

Inherently insulating and thermally stable nanocellulose membranes are prone to forming a three-dimensional porous structure, which is conducive to storing large amounts of electrolyte and providing ion migration pathways. However, the infiltration of polar electrolytes can compromise the mechanical strength of the nanocellulose membrane by disrupting hydrogen bonding, leading to a suboptimal interface and cycling stability of the batteries. This study effectively improves the mechanical strength and electrochemical performance of bacterial cellulose (BC) based separators by in situ constructing a dual-network structure polymerized from poly(ethylene glycol) diacrylate (PEGDA) and acrylic acid (AA). The distinctive dual-network structure not only significantly enhances the wet strength of the BC separator but also introduces a polymer-coordination transport mechanism, building upon the original lithium-ion pore transport system. The transport of lithium ions is regulated by the ether, ester and carboxyl groups in the polymer network, so that they are uniformly deposited on the surface of the lithium metal negative electrode, and finally form an SEI layer dominated by LiF, which greatly reduces the side reactions between the electrolyte and the electrode. The assembled lithium symmetric battery exhibits stable lithium deposition/stripping behavior, and the cycle stability and rate performance are far superior to those of commercial PP separators.

In view of sustainable development and environmental protection, renewable itaconic acid was used to synthesize a bio-based curing agent for soy-based adhesives. The bio-based curing agent, i.e., itaconic acid-based polyamidoamine-epichlorohydrin resin (IA-PAE), was characterized by RSV and 1 H-NMR. Results showed that IA-PADA and IA-PAE had much lower molecular weights than commercial PAE (C-PAE). Both N-(3-chloro-2-hydroxypropyl) groups and azetidinium rings of IA-PAE could perform as functional groups in IA-PAE modified soy flour adhesive (IA-PAE-SF). The pH values affected the viscosities of IA-PAE-SF adhesives significantly but had little effect on the wet strengths . Wet strength of IA-PAE-SF on plywood (0.95 MPa) was comparable to that of C-PAE-SF and met the requirements of Chinese National Standards for type-II applications. Cross-linking networks were formed during hot-pressing process and thus, improved water resistance of IA-PAE-SF on plywood. Measurement of water-insoluble solid content of cured adhesives and observation of SEM confirmed the formation of cross-linking networks in cured IA-PAE-SF.

To improve the performance of waterborne materials, this study attempts to prepare a novel water-dispersible isocyanate crosslinking agent based on plant-based castor oil. The intermediate maleated castor oil and water-dispersible isocyanates with different R values [n(NCO)/n(OH)] are prepared and characterized by FTIR and 1 H NMR. The viscosity test, isocyanate content titration, particle size analysis, and the morphologies indicate that the optimal condition for the water-dispersible isocyanates (e.g., best storage stability and particle size distribution) is at R value = 40. The mechanical test proves that the water-dispersible isocyanates can greatly improve the bonding strength and water resistance of wood adhesives, showing an increase of wet strength to be as high as 146 % and 506 % for urea-formaldehyde resin and white latex, respectively. The castor oil-mediated water-dispersible isocyanate system opens a novel avenue to synthesize waterborne crosslinking agent for applications in adhesives, coatings, and structural materials.

The most commonly used curing agents for soy-based adhesives are polyamines, which have the problem of low solid content and/or high viscosity. To overcome this problem, a new type of polyamidoamine (PADA) resin was synthesized and applied to soy flour-based adhesives to improve their water resistance. The PADA solution obtained had a high solid content of 50 wt% and low viscosity of 270 cP. The optimum weight ratio of soy flour/PADA/maleic anhydride to prepare adhesive was 40/7/1.68. The wet strength of plywood prepared at the optimum weight ratio was 0.82 MPa, which meant the plywood could be used as type II plywood according to the Chinese National Standard GB/T 9846.7-2004. The results of water-insoluble solid content measurement and SEM observation demonstrated that cured soy flour–PADA–maleic anhydride adhesive had a 16 % greater water-insoluble solid content than soy flour–NaOH adhesive. The cross-linking network formed by the reactions of PADA and MA would increase the water-insoluble solid contents and improve water resistance of cured soy flour-based adhesives.

Wood adhesives are mostly synthesized from unsustainable and hazardous petrochemical-based formaldehyde. Recently, an inorganic, sustainable and environmentally friendly aluminophosphate adhesive was developed for fabricating various wood-based panels. In order to increase its competitiveness, this study developed an approach for improving the interfacial adhesion of aluminophosphate. Hence, carboxymethyl cellulose was functionalized using 3-aminopropyl triethoxysilane to alter the chemical structures of the adhesive. Thereafter, a face-centered central composite design based on response surface methodology was employed to generate the optimum production conditions for the improved plywood interfaces. Adhesive concentration and hot-press temperature were seen as the significant factors within tested limits. The most appropriate production variables were suggested with a valid predictive model for such conditions. Also, the reaction mechanisms revealed the successful altering of the aluminophosphate properties with a well-uniform adhesive surface. The results indicate that modified adhesives are more thermally stable. Furthermore, the wet bonding strength of the modified adhesive was improved above the minimum threshold (Chinese type II standard ≥0.70 MPa). Therefore, the sustainable (i.e. continuous availability of CMC) approach adopted in this research could be considered as a viable method for improving the properties of aluminophosphate adhesives.

Due to the excellent properties of nanocellulose film such as biodegradability and renewability, researchers have conducted in-depth research on it in recent years. However, rich hydroxyl groups on the surface of nanocellulose make it hydrophilic , and small gaps between the fibrils have significant capillary effect, which cause the strength of nanocellulose film drastically deteriorates when exposed to water, severely restricting its scope of use. In this study, the nanocellulose prepared by ball milling was used to prepare nanocellulose film, and the surface of the film was partially dissolved by ZnCl 2 . The dense regenerated cellulose (Cellulose Ⅱ) with Zn 2+ on the surface made the film hydrophobic, effectively reduced the water absorption rate of the film, and also maintained the internal structure of the nanocellulose. Through this strategy, the nanocellulose film with high dry strength (151–176 MPa), wet strength (27.6–31.7 MPa), high light transmittance (80–91%), and adjustable haze (50–90%) was obtained. This study provides a facile and environmentally friendly strategy to improve the wet strength of nanocellulose film, which broadens its application prospect in packaging materials and electronic devices.
