We suggest a simple idea of bio-based adhesives with strong adhesion even under water. The adhesives simply prepared via polycondensation of 3,4-dihydroxyhydrocinnamic acid (DHHCA) and lactic acid (LA) in one pot polymerization. Poly(DHHCA-co-LA) has a hyperbranched structure and demonstrated strong dry and wet adhesion strength on diverse material surfaces. We found that their adhesion strength depended on the concentration of DHHCA. Poly(DHHCA-co-LA) with the lowest concentration of DHHCA showed the highest adhesion strength in water with a value of 2.7 MPa between glasses, while with the highest concentration of DHHCA it exhibited the highest dry adhesion strength with a value of 3.5 MPa, which was comparable to commercial instant super glue. Compared to underwater glues reported previously, our adhesives were able to spread rapidly under water with a low viscosity and worked strongly. Poly(DHHCA-co-LA) also showed long-term stability and kept wet adhesion strength of 2.2 MPa after steeping in water for 1 month at room temperature (initial strength was 2.4 MPa). In this paper, Poly(DHHCA-co-LA) with strong dry and wet adhesion properties and long-term stability was demonstrated for various kinds of applications, especially for wet conditions.Keywords:bio-based;wet adhesion;bio-inspired;hot melt adhesive

Traditional polyurethane hot-melt adhesives often fall short in achieving high bonding strength and recyclability, and their dependence on non-renewable resources poses a significant hurdle for sustainable development. In this study, a palm oil-based diethanolamide (POEA) containing a long aliphatic chain was synthesized to develop comb thermoplastic polyurethane hot-melt adhesives (POPUs) with high biobased content, superior adhesion strength, and reusability. The microphase separation structure of POPUs was manipulated through the incorporation of dangling fatty acid chains and hydrogen bonds, resulting in the adhesives with excellent mechanical properties, with an optimum tensile strength of 5.37 MPa and an elongation at break of 282 %. As a hot-melt adhesive, it achieved a maximum lap-shear strength of 7.34 MPa on steel and maintained an average strength of 95 % of its initial value across multiple bonding cycles. Moreover, its lap-shear strengths with wood and glass remained at 6.57 MPa and 3.57 MPa respectively, fully meeting the requirements for interior decoration. Additionally, it was unexpectedly discovered that the adhesives possessed fluorescence characteristics, which can be applied in fields such as cultural relic restoration and anti-counterfeiting.

In order to improve the compatibility of Fe3O4 particles with ethylene vinyl acetate copolymers (EVA) composite hot melt adhesives (HMAs), Fe3O4 magnetic particles were surface coated with polyvinyl acetate (PVAc). The PVAc-coated Fe3O4 modified EVA composite HMAs were characterized by SEM, DSC, XRD, optical contact angle measuring, infrared dichroism and parallel-plate rheometer measurements. The results showed that Fe3O4 particles were successfully coated by PVAc, leading to better dispersion of the particles in EVA composite HMAs. It was also found that the orientation structure, interfacial property and the flow properties of the modified HMAs were all changed, and the segment orientation degree and crystallinity of the modified EVA composite HMAs clearly increased with the increase of PVAc-coated Fe3O4 particles content. Importantly, the peel strength of the modified HMAs was further enhanced. For the modified HMAs with 15 phr (parts per hundred resins) of PVAc-coated Fe3O4 particles, the peel strength reached 6.6 kN m−1 and was increased by 247% compared with the unmodified HMAs.

Adhesives are widely used to bond various materials and surfaces, hot melt adhesives (HMAs) have conquered almost every industry area due to their solvent-free volatilization and ease of use. However, preparing reusable HMAs with high shear strength is still extremely challenging. Here, we show a simple way to prepare a reusable HMA, OPU (oxime-based polyurethane), with high lap shear strength based on oxime-urethane bonds. Cu(II) ions were introduced to further enhance the bulk strength to form ligand bonds. The relationship between the ligand bond content and the material properties was also investigated. Increasing ligand bond content limited the degree of crystallinity and shear strength. And the breaking stress and toughness of the coordinated material were significantly increased. The initial shear strengths of OPU for 304 stainless steel (after this referred to as “steel”) and aluminum reached 12.6 MPa and 9.3 MPa, respectively, which is the highest shear strength available for oxime-urethane-based polyurethane HMAs. After 10 repetitions, the OPU still retains its high shear performance. By analyzing the relationship between shear strength and the amount of Cu(II), it is found that the shear strength is strongly related to chain mobility and Young's modulus . This work demonstrates a useful way of synthesizing reusable HMAs with high lap shear strength.

To limit the use of petrochemical resources in the context of the energy crisis, it is critical to produce sustainable thermoplastic adhesives. However, it is still difficult for biomass-based hot-melt adhesives to attain superior adhesion strength and recyclability. An intriguing option for sustainable polyester hot-melt adhesives is provided by vanillin, an aromatic lignin derivative with a structure of many oxygen-containing functional groups. Charged negative oxygen-containing functional groups can easily interact with positively charged substrates such as metals, and copolyesters containing vanillin-derived monomers can be used as hot-melt adhesives to achieve a favorable balance between substrate adhesion and cohesion of the polyester glue layer. Here, we designed and modified the lignin-derived aromatic chemical vanillin for copolymerization with 1,4-butanediol (BDO), dimethyl terephthalate (DMT), and diethylene glycol (DEG) to obtain partial biobased copolyesters. The produced copolyesters exhibited excellent adhesion to diverse metal substrates because the monomer generated from vanillin contained a range of oxygen-containing groups including methoxy, hydroxyl, carboxyl groups, and ether bonds. With single-lap shear strengths of 10.6, 14.4, and 15.1 MPa for aluminum, brass, and iron, respectively, the copolyester with 30% vanillin-derived monomer content demonstrated outstanding adhesion. The resultant copolyesters can be recycled by dissolving them in a particular solvent at room temperature and exhibiting good resistance to heat, acids, and alkalis. Additionally, we evaluated the potential interaction of naturally oxygenated biomass derivatives with metal atoms using density functional theory (DFT), assessed the rational material design, and explained how exceptional adhesion properties are achieved.

The miniaturization and reliability of portable electronics are increasingly dependent on structural adhesive while developing detachable, reusable, and recyclable adhesives remain great challenge. Herein, we developed a novel strategy of incorporating self-complementary quadruple hydrogen bonds into multi-branch polyurethane as terminal motifs to construct supramolecular adhesive. Impressively, the as-synthesized TPU-UPy was endowed with a high adhesion strength of 6.8 MPa for steel and featured excellent multiple reusability with more than 70% of the original adhesion strength remained even after reuse for five times. More importantly, it exhibited increasing trend of adhesive strength as the stretching speed increases, suitable for application of anti-impact. The way of generating UPy motifs by this synthetic route did not involve excessive consumption of reactants, which was potential to be industrialized. Thus, the TPU-UPy is a candidate hot melt adhesive that can be put into practical use of portable electronics encountering occasional impact.

The development of adhesive technology is gaining increasing attention in machinery, electronics, aviation, and other fields. However, traditional adhesives are difficult to be peeled and removed after cross-linking and curing due to the limited solubility in common solvents, which causes pollution and damage to the surface of the adherend. In this work, we synthesized random hyperbranched polyamide-amine hot melt adhesives through Michael addition of 1,8-octanediamine and N,N ’-methylene diacrylamide (ODA-RHP HMA). Owing to the presence of various polar groups, ODA-RHP HMA exhibited robust lap shear strength to different substrates, including glass (6.6 MPa), ceramics (10.3 MPa), steel (11.5 MPa), and aluminum (11.8 MPa). Due to the hydrogen bonds in ODA-RHP, the HMA demonstrated intrinsic self-healing ability, which can be used repeatedly when being subjected to cyclic heating and cooling. Since ODA-RHP HMA can be swollen or dissolved in ethanol, the adhesives can be easily removed through erasing. In addition, ODA-RHP exhibited aggregation-induced luminescence due to the tertiary amine structure in the molecular structure of ODA-RHP, which can be used in the field of cultural relics restoration.

Adhesives are ubiquitous in industries and daily life. However, conventional fossil-derived adhesives pose substantial health and environmental risks during manufacturing and utilization. The development of nontoxic high-performance adhesives from renewable feedstocks is therefore highly desired but remains technically challenging. Here we report a high-performing hot-melt adhesive—glue that is applied in a hot molten state—derived from a byproduct of the pulp industry, xylan, a type of hemicellulose. Under optimal conditions, the lap-shear strength between wood chips can reach approximately 30 MPa, surpassing that of classic epoxy resins and far exceeding that of a commercial hot-melt adhesive (ethylene vinyl acetate). Furthermore, the xylan hot-melt adhesive exhibits excellent reusability for multiple applications, retaining more than 100% of its original adhesion strength even after ten reuse cycles. Toxicity tests show good biocompatibility for xylan hot-melt adhesive. Overall, this work provides useful insights into the design of high-performance, reusable, bio-based adhesives for enhanced sustainability.

As a group of environmentally friendly adhesives, polyurethane hot-melt adhesives (HMAs) are used widely. However, existing thermoplastic (TPU) and thermoset (PUR) polyurethane HMAs have certain shortcomings. The adhesion strength and solvent resistance of TPU-HMAs are relatively poor owing to their linear structure. PUR-HMAs are non-reworkable and unrecyclable with low initial adhesion strength. These features greatly limit their applications. Herein, we used reversible oxime–carbamate bonds to build a dynamically crosslinked polyurethane HMA (DPU-HMA), which combines the advantages of TPU-HMAs and PUR-HMAs. Lap shear tests of stainless steel showed that the DPU-HMA had initial (3.47 ± 0.93 MPa after 5 min curing) and ultimate (5.71 ± 0.72 MPa after 1 day curing) adhesion strengths that were much higher than those for the commercial adhesive 3M PUR-HMA (0.02 ± 0.01 MPa after 5 min curing; 4.07 ± 0.13 MPa after 14 days curing). The DPU-HMAs retained moderate lap shear strength in solvent (acetone), whereas TPU-HMAs were completely dissolved. The DPU-HMAs were effective in bonding multiple substrates including metal, plastic, wood, and composites. Furthermore, the DPU-HMAs possessed smart features, such as debonding on demand and self-healing owing to their dynamic network. We expect that this new type of adhesive will be useful for applications in electronics assembly, and the automotive, and aerospace fields. The molecular design strategy might also be applicable for other adhesive systems.

The need to improve the environmental friendliness and achieve the recycling of resins is an ongoing process for hot-melt adhesive technology. In this work, a new type of thermoreversible crosslinking hot-melt adhesive-based Diels Alder (DA) reaction was prepared. The critical idea was to efficiently initiate the esterification to yield furoic acid (FA)-grafted poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA-g-FA), and then PVA-g-FA was mixed with N,N′-(4,4′-methylenediphenyl)dimaleimide (MDI) to finally obtain the thermoreversible crosslinking adhesive (PVA-g-FA/MDI). The experimental results indicated that the reversibility of the DA reaction between the furan rings and the maleimide groups allowed PVA-g-FA/MDI to be dynamically crosslinked. It was able to crosslink at a temperature of 80 °C and decrosslink at 120 °C. Moreover, the performances of hot-melt adhesive were investigated. The PVA-g-FA/MDI had a better peeling strength (43.33 N mm−1), bond strength (11.84 MPa), and thermal conductivity (0.263 W m−1 K−1) than PVA resins. The light-transmittance and haze value were 52.8% and 12.24‰, respectively. The PVA-g-FA/MDI resin could be reused more than two times.

This study presented the synthesis and characterization of polyester block polyamide hot melt adhesives (PPHMAs) with high adhesion strength and toughness. The PPHMAs demonstrated an adhesion strength of 11.04 MPa and toughness of 22.54 MJ·m −3 , making them suitable for various substrates such as aluminum , copper, and stainless steel. The polyamide segments synthesized from dimer acid and 2-methyl-1,5-diaminopentane exhibited characteristics of softness and high elongation. Using isophorone diamine as a reinforcing agent introduced a stable six-membered ring structure, which enhanced the polymer's rigidity and strength, thus meeting the requirements for polyamide segments to function as the hard segments in block polymers . A trace amount of Tris (2-aminoethyl) amine provided the cross-linking sites which are similar to those in neuronal structures. The polyester segments, which were synthesized from poly (propylene glycol) diglycidyl ether and sebacic acid, served as the soft segments in the block polymer and were connected to the hard segment via amide bonds. The addition of the polyester segments enhanced the non-covalent molecular interactions within PPHMAs, leading to dynamic crosslinking properties. The adhesive maintained stable adhesion even after six cycles, which showcased its durability. Furthermore, the PPHMAs exhibited notable chemical resistance. It retained over 60 % adhesion strength after exposure to some chemical solvents including artificial seawater , 5 % NaOH solution, 5 % HCl solution, and DMSO for 24 h. These findings offered a novel approach to enhancing the adhesion strength and toughness of conventional thermoplastic hot melt adhesives.

Spider silk is recognized as one of the strongest naturally occurring materials due to its unique biphasic structure. Taking inspiration from natural spider silk, an ultrastrong, low-temperature-resistant, reusable thermoplastic silicon-containing polyamide (Si-PA) hot-melt adhesive (HMA) has been synthesized for the first time by melt polycondensation. The obtained Si-PA adhesive possesses a reliable bond strength of up to 20.6 MPa at ambient temperature and 9.5 MPa at −196 °C on stainless steel, notably outperforming comparable polyamide HMAs. These extraordinary performances mainly originate from the meticulously engineered microphase separation structure, wherein nanoscale crystalline regions (20–200 nm) disperse throughout the amorphous regions formed by organosilicon chain segments. Moreover, high-density hydrogen-bond-induced emission of the amide cluster leads to strong blue fluorescence. The Si-PAs show potential in the fields of cold-resistant adhesive devices and tamper-resistant displays. Furthermore, this design provides an idea for mimicking spider silk materials.
