The phase change material (PCM) microcapsule is a common high-performance storage technology of thermal energy. However, the organic wall with low thermal conductivity for PCM reduces the efficiency of heat storage and release. In this study, the novel carbon nanotube-doped phase change materials (C-PCMs) were developed. Scanning electron microscope test (SEM), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and the thermogravimetric analysis/infrared spectrometry (TG-IR) were used to analyse the composite structure and thermal performances. The results indicate that C-PCMs are small and regular in spherical shape. When C-PCMs suffer from heat, the shell can maintain integrity below 165 °C. Furthermore, the carbon nanotubes in the shell play as a channel to connect the inside with the outside and improve the efficiency of heat transfer. The DCS test of the samples showed that the latent heat of C-PCMs and PCMs were 112.25 J/g and 116.18 J/g, respectively. The initial phase transition temperature of C-PCMs is 28.97 °C, which is 0.5 °C lower than that of PCMs. The results of the model room test suggested that the composite filled with C-PCMs reduces indoor temperature fluctuations and exhibits the potential for enhancing energy savings and the thermal comfort of buildings.

Integrating personal thermoregulation technologies into wearable textiles has enabled extensive and profound technological breakthroughs in energy savings, thermal comfort, wearable electronics, intelligent fabrics, and so forth. Nevertheless, previous studies have suffered from long-standing issues such as limited working temperature, poor comfort, and weak reliability of the textiles. Here, we demonstrate a skin-friendly personal insulation textile and a thermoregulation textile that can perform both passive heating and cooling using the same piece of textile with zero energy input. The insulation textile material is composed of biomaterial microstructured fibers that exhibit good thermal insulation, low thermal emissivity, and good dyeability. By filling these microstructure fibers with biocompatible phase-change materials and coating them with polydimethylsiloxane, the insulation textile becomes a thermoregulation textile that shows good water hydrophobicity, high mechanical robustness, and high working stability. The proposed thermoregulation textile exhibits slow heating/cooling rates with improved thermal comfort, offering feasible and adaptive options for personal cooling/heating scenarios and enabling scalable manufacturing for practical applications.

Human thermal management technologies based on radiant cooling can achieve portable, lightweight, long-lasting, and zero-energy cooling. However, in a high-temperature environment, perspiration continues to accumulate and increased humidity reduces the efficiency of radiant cooling, thus affecting human thermal and humidity comfort. Therefore, we developed a radiation-cooled aerogel film with easily tunable pore sizes consisting of cellulose acetate, polyvinylidene fluoride-hexafluoropropylene (PVDF-HFP), and aluminum oxide (Al2O3), which has excellent optical properties, moisture permeability, and thermal stability. The appropriate pore size distribution and porosity not only enhance the solar reflectivity of the film but also improve its surface wettability. High solar reflectance (R̅solar = 97.4%) and infrared emissivity (ε̅IR = 98.5%) enabled the film to produce subambient cooling of 8.1 °C at an irradiance of 794.1 W/m2. Furthermore, even under conditions of high humidity (relative humidity = 90%), the film is expected to achieve a maximum daytime cooling power of 57 W/m2. The aerogel film exhibited superior moisture permeability (WVT = 7224 g/m2·24 h) compared to commercial cotton fabric. This work has significant applications in the management of human heat and humidity in extreme heat environments.

Moisture management materials, which can remove liquid unidirectionally, have excellent potential for long-term healthcare of bedridden patients because they can handle large amounts of body fluids caused by incontinence, sweating, etc. However, their lack of support, thermal management, and antibacterial properties limits their clinical application. Here, a three-dimensional thermoplastic polyurethane/warp-knitted spacer fabric/viscose fabric (TWVF) was designed and prepared by coating and needle-punching. TWVF had asymmetrical wettability and interpenetrating fiber pin arrays, which could quickly and unidirectionally drain body fluid away from the skin to keep the skin dry and clean. Meanwhile, the low thermal conductivity of TWVF prevented excessive cooling caused by heat loss of liquid transfer (body temperature was 4.7 °C higher than that with cotton textiles). TWVF exhibited excellent permeability, a low compression modulus (0.03 MPa), and a high compression strength (0.15 MPa), providing sufficient air exchange and suitable support for the body and reducing the risk of pressure injury. Moreover, the incorporated aloin endowed TWVF with excellent antibacterial rates against Staphylococcus aureus (99.61%) and Escherichia coli (98.16%), respectively. This multifunctional textile is simple to prepare and easy to industrialize, providing a reference for the development of functional healthcare materials.

Intermittent floor radiant heating is widely employed in building heating systems. However, it suffers large indoor air temperature fluctuations due to its intermission. The integration of phase change material (PCM) can significantly mitigate this issue. In this study, Na 2 HPO 4 ·12H 2 O and Na 2 SO 4 ·10H 2 O were used as raw materials, with expanded perlite (EP) as the porous medium, to prepare a shaped composite phase change material (EPPCM). This material was then blended into mortar to produce a novel phase change mortar (EPPCM-M). Experiments were carried out to evaluate its heat storage performances. Compared to normal mortar, EPPCM-M of 25 mm thickness mitigates temperature fluctuations, with the peak temperature on the cold end reduced by about 2.5 °C and a slower cooling rate on the hot end. To assess the practical application of EPPCM in buildings, a simulation study was conducted. A room model of 4 × 4 × 3 m was built and subjected to radiant floor heating for 8 h daily, under the winter climate conditions of Shanghai from November 15th to March 14th. The results showed that the EPPCM-M can effectively suppress temperature fluctuations in both the floor surface and average indoor air temperatures. From February 27th to March 5th, the maximum fluctuation of floor surface temperature was reduced by 55.4 %, the maximum fluctuation of average indoor air temperature was reduced by 39.5 %. The application of the EPPCM-M in intermittent floor radiant heating not only ensures indoor thermal comfort but also achieves heat's “peak load shifting”, improving indoor comfort, reducing heating energy consumption, and promoting building energy efficiency.

A type of personal protective face mask with thermal comfort function is developed based on the radiative cooling concept. We show that the cooling face mask, with the combination of PLA meltblown microfibers and a thin sheet of mixed electrospun micro- and nanofibers as filtration media and a silk fabric as inner supporting layer, can provide high reflectivity (>85 %) in the solar spectrum and high emissivity (>96 %) in the atmospheric window. Outdoor measurement of simulated skin temperature demonstrates the skin covered by our cooling mask could be ∼ 2.7℃ lower than that covered by commercial 3 M N95 mask. Our cooling mask exhibits excellent filtration performance with 99.98 % filtration efficiency and < 110 Pa pressure drop because of the reduced stacking density of the filtration media. This research has the potential of developing thermal management textiles.

Thermal management textiles provide an energy-efficient strategy for personal thermal comfort by regulating heat flow between the human body and the environment. However, textiles with a single heating or cooling mode cannot realize temperature regulation under dynamic weather. Furthermore, monocolor textiles do not satisfy aesthetic requirements in a garment. Here, we develop a thermochromic (TC) conductive fiber with a coaxial structure composed of a conductive core and thermochromic shell. The TC conductive fiber-woven fabric has the ability of low-energy dynamic thermal management by combining Joule heating and modulation of solar absorption. Compared with commercial white fabrics, TC conductive fabrics exhibit a maximum temperature drop of 2.5 K, while the temperature of colored commercial fabrics is 7.5–16 K higher than that of commercial white fabrics in the hot. In the cold, the combination of Joule heating and the photothermal effect can provide desired thermal comfort for humans. Meanwhile, heat obtained from solar absorption brings the temperature of a fabric to a predetermined level, which saves energy of 625 W/m2 compared to a conductive-fiber-based textile. In addition, TC conductive fabrics with trichromatic evolution provide a sensitive and instant temperature visualization capable of identification of invisible and intense infrared radiation. These results provide another path to expand potential applications of wearable, flexible electronics.

The heat-storage coatings from ethylene vinyl acetate (EVA) copolymers were developed by incorporating in-situ synthesized phase change nano-capsules (NEPCMs). The coatings were applied to the interior walls of the building, aimed at enhancing thermal storage and flame-retardant performances. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and X-ray diffraction (XRD) are utilized to evaluate the chemical composition of the NEPCMs. At the same time, the thermal properties and microstructure of NEPCMs and the coatings are analyzed using differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The enthalpy of NEPCMs is 158.14 J/g, while that of heat-storage coatings is 56.45 J/g. NEPCMs and heat-storage coatings exhibit excellent thermal storage performance even after 200 heating-cooling cycles, demonstrating the excellent thermal stability of NEPCMs and heat-storage coatings. Furthermore, excellent flame-retardant properties are also provided by the heat-storage coating. In dynamic heat transfer experiments, under the same conditions, the heat-storage coatings were capable of maintaining the chamber in the thermal comfort zone (24–28 °C) for 141 min, while the conventional coatings lasted only 34 min. The results show that incorporating heat-storage coatings can effectively enhance the thermal regulation performance of interior walls and improve the thermal comfort of indoor environments. Therefore, heat-storage coatings hold a high potential for application in energy-saving buildings.

Multifunctional knitted fabrics with Janus structure have been widely used for smart wearable textiles in the personal thermal management. Nevertheless, the existing intelligent textiles often lack efficient sweat management capacity and thermal comfort under many practical conditions. Herein, a Janus composite fabric (JPF) based on paper-yarn fabric was proposed, which integrated radiative cooling effects with unidirectional moisture-wicking performance through a combination of electrospinning and spray coating, utilizing cellulose-based materials and inorganic particles. The results showed that the JPF exhibited good solar reflectance at 88.6 %, and infrared emissivity at 94.7 %, and it confers excellent moisture-wicking and antigravity water transfer properties, water vapor transmission rate of 192 g −2 h −1 , water contact angle shifted to 0° within 2 s. Besides, the outdoor experiment reveals that the JPF have outstanding cooling properties, its temperature has dropped by 9.2 °C compared to ambient temperature. In addition, the tensile strength of the JPF compared with original paper-yarn fabric has been enhanced an increase of 8.46 %. This multifunctional textile integrates radiative cooling with moisture management, exhibiting new avenues for sustainable, energy-efficient, and intelligent textile design that significantly enhances human comfort in hot climates.

Graphene not only provides functional finishing for fabrics, but also influences the original physical and mechanical properties of the fabrics, reducing their wearing properties. This study conducted graphene conductive finishing on acrylic/wool blended knitted fabrics using an oxidation–reduction method. The research focused on analyzing the reduction of graphene, fabric conductivity, thermal comfort, and hand feel of the fabric, while studying the effects of reduction temperature and time on electrical conductivity, thermal comfort, moisture absorption, breathability, and hand feel during the graphene process. The results revealed that a higher degree of graphene reduction led to lower surface resistance and enhanced electrical conductivity in the acrylic/wool blended knitted fabrics. The stability of the fabric structure and mechanical characteristics were also influenced by temperature and time, impacting comfort attributes. The reduction temperature and duration directly influenced the reduction degree of graphene, with the maximum reduction degree and lowest surface resistance observed at 75 °C and 90 min. Importantly, there was no significant degradation in the thermal comfort and tactility of the acrylic/wool blended knitted fabrics.

Passive thermal regulation materials are gaining increasing attention for their sustainability; however, conventional ones are usually limited to a single temperature condition, failing to meet the varying temperature demands across different seasons. To address this challenge, inspired by penguins’ thermoregulatory strategies, this study develops a composite phase change material that enables distinct regulation mechanisms under varying conditions. This material features a Janus surface that can switch between photothermal absorption and radiative cooling to cope with cold daytimes and hot environments; two distinct phase change ranges can maintain temperature balance on comfortable nights and achieve long-term thermal compensation on cold nights. Outdoor tests demonstrated that the material achieves 9.0℃ daytime cooling and extends nighttime comfort duration by 27.3% in hot weather, while in cold weather it averages 11℃ daytime warming and keeps nighttime temperature 0.5℃ above ambient; simulation results further showed that roof application of this material can effectively improve thermal comfort in diverse regions throughout the year. This work integrates photothermal absorption, radiative cooling, and dual-phase change processes, providing a feasible strategy for enhancing all-season thermal comfort in building energy conservation.

Microencapsulated phase change materials (MPCMs) have gained widespread application in energy-efficient buildings, aiming to improve thermal comfort and reduce energy consumption. To enhance the engineering feasibility of MPCMs, researchers are now focusing on developing MPCMs with multifunctional properties, beyond single thermal storage functionality. In this study, we proposed a novel and straightforward approach to fabricate multifunctional MPCMs with BaCO 3 as shell and a core composed of binary phase change materials (PCMs) and lipophilic-modified graphite (MG) via self-assembly method. The incorporation of BaCO 3 shell provides MPCMs with additional resistance to ionizing radiation pollution due to the high atomic number element Ba. Additionally, the incorporation of MG into PCMs enhances its temperature sensitivity. The thermal analysis indicates that the binary PCMs’ composition in MPCMs results in two phase transition temperatures at 3.3 °C and 26.4 °C, making them capable of thermal storage in line with comfortable residential temperatures across different seasons. Furthermore, MPCMs were introduced into cement paste (CPM) and used to construct cement chambers. Adding 10 wt% MPCMs in the CPM chambers placed outdoors in Wuhan (from June 7th to June 9th) led to a 23.8 % decrease in temperature fluctuations compared to the reference sample. Radiation shielding results indicated that the linear attenuation coefficient (μ) of CPM increased by 58.7 %, due to enhanced incoherent scattering and photoelectric effects between high atomic number elements and photons. Additionally, XCOM simulations predicted a strong correlation between MPCM content and μ values, with particularly high accuracy at low photon energies. Overall, the multifunctional MPCMs developed in this study not only offers a new route for reducing residential energy consumption and shielding ionizing pollution, but also broadens the applicability of traditional PCMs in the building and other fields.
