Phase and Structure Optimizations of MoS2 Concentrate Pellets with Al2O3-SiO2 Additives During Oxidative and Volatilizing Roasting Process

Li Guanghui,Huang Jiahao,Sun Hu,Mang Changye,Hou Yanrui,Luo Jun

The novel one-step oxidation–volatilization process for separating MoO 3 from pelletized MoS 2 concentrate supported on a porous Al 2 O 3 -SiO 2 skeleton has been demonstrated to have superior diffusion efficiency compared to the traditional two-step oxidative roasting-sublimation approach. Optimal control of pellet phase and micro-structure evolutions is crucial for maintaining a stable and breathable pellet bed throughout the roasting process, which is essential for industrial application of the new process. This work determined the phase transformations of MoS 2 concentrate pellets during roasting, revealed the formation mechanisms of mullite whiskers from MoS 2 -Al 2 O 3 -SiO 2 system and thus achieved toughening control of roasted MoS 2 concentrate pellets with temperature programmed roasting (TPR). It is found that the intermediate product Al 2 (MoO 4 ) 3 can induce the low-temperature formation of mullite whisker. With TPR, the volatilization rate of molybdenum is 97.2%, and the compressive strength of mullite pellets reach 124.8 N. This study puts forward a feasible route with industrial significance.

Retention of Arsenic During the Roasting Process of Antimony Sulfide Concentrate: Alleviate Environmental Pollution Caused by Arsenic-Alkali Residue

Liu Jiang,Tang Chaobo,Yang Jianguang,Nan Tianxiang,Zhu Qiang,Tang Shiyang,Fan Xiao-Bin

Arsenic is removed in the refining process of crude antimony in traditional antimony smelting, which produces a lot of arsenic-alkali-residue (AAR). This study proposes a two-stage roasting process to retain arsenic during volatile roasting of antimony sulfide concentrates. Calcium oxide was employed to retain arsenic in the calcine at low temperature, while antimony was volatilized into the fume as antimony trioxide at high temperature. The feasibility was verified by thermodynamic calculations. The effects of different factors on the volatilization efficiency of antimony and the retention efficiency of arsenic were investigated. Moreover, the leaching toxicity of arsenical calcine was tested. The volatilization efficiency of antimony and retention efficiency of arsenic were 93.06 and 70.12 pct at optimized conditions, respectively. The leaching concentration of arsenic in the arsenic retention calcine (below 5 mg·L −1 ) was far less than the leaching concentration of arsenic in AAR (915 mg·L −1 ).

Sequential extraction of tungsten from scheelite through roasting and alkaline leaching

Dandan Gong,Kanggen Zhou,Changhong Peng,Junjie Li,Wei Chen

Extraction of tungsten from scheelite is important for the processing of tungsten resources for tungsten metallurgical companies. However, there are many difficulties to leach scheelite compared to wolframite. Compared with calcium tungstate (CaWO 4 ), magnesium tungstate (MgWO 4 ) is a readily soluble substance in NaOH solution. In this paper, conversion of CaWO 4 to MgWO 4 through roasting a mixture of scheelite and MgCl 2 was investigated systematically. The leaching performance of the roasted products in NaOH solution was also studied. Thermodynamic analyses and experimental results showed that MgWO 4 could be prepared through reaction of CaWO 4 with MgCl 2 . Increasing roasting temperature and MgCl 2 dosage could increase the extent of conversion of CaWO 4 to MgWO 4 . Additionally, leaching experiments showed a good leachability of the roasted products with a tungsten leaching efficiency of 98.79% in 4 M NaOH solution at 90 °C. This work may provide an alternative approach for the extraction of tungsten from scheelite.

Microemulsion leaching of vanadium from sodium-roasted vanadium slag by fusion of leaching and extraction processes

Guo Yun,Li Hong-yi,Yuan Yi-heng,Huang Jie,Diao Jiang,Li Gang,Xie Bing

The fusion of the leaching and purification processes was realized by directly using microemulsion as the leaching agent. The bis-(2-ethyhexyl) phosphoric acid (DEHPA)/ n -heptane/NaOH microemulsion system was established to directly leach vanadates from sodium-roasted vanadium slag. The effect of the leaching agent on the leaching efficiency was investigated, in addition to the molar ratio of H 2 O/NaDEHP ( W ), DEHPA concentration, solid/liquid ratio, stirring time, and leaching temperature. In optimal situations, the vanadium leaching efficiency reaches 79.57%. The X-ray diffraction characterization of the leaching residue and the Raman spectrum of the microemulsion before and after leaching demonstrate the successful entry of vanadates from the sodium-roasted vanadium slag into the microemulsion. The proposed method successfully realizes the leaching and purification of vanadates in one step, thereby greatly reducing production costs and environmental pollution. It also offers a new way to achieve the green recovery of valuable metals from solid resources.

Competitive extraction behaviors of vanadium and chromium in the sodium roasting — Water leaching process

Junyi Xiang,Xi Lu,Hongru Rao,Luwei Bai,Qingyun Huang,Xuewei Lv

The separation of vanadium and chromium from vanadium-chromium slag constitutes the greatest bottleneck in the exploitation and utilization of high-chromium vanadium-titanium magnetite, which mainly results from the insufficient understanding of the behavior of similar elements vanadium and chromium during the extraction process. In this research, a series of spinels FeV x Cr 2- x O 4 (0 ≤  x  ≤ 2) were synthesized via the high-temperature solid-state method, and their sodium roasting and leaching behavior were comprehensively analyzed. The transformation rules of sodium vanadate and chromate were investigated by XRD, SEM-EDS, FTIR, and thermodynamic calculation. The results indicate that in the FeV x Cr 2- x O 4 (0 ≤  x  ≤ 2) − Na 2 CO 3 system, at 300°C, a portion of chromium spinel phase is preferentially and slowly oxidized to Cr 2 O 3 , while the vanadium spinel rapidly oxidizes to form NaVO 3 at 400°C. Above 500°C, NaVO 3 further reacts with Na 2 CO 3 to form Na 4 V 2 O 7 , and Na 2 CrO 4 also begins to form concurrently. As the proportion of Cr in FeV x Cr 2- x O 4 increases, both the leaching efficiencies of vanadium and chromium from the sodium-roasted samples decrease, with the leaching efficiency of chromium decreasing more significantly. Significant competitive and synergistic effects between vanadium and chromium are observed in the roasting of FeV x Cr 2- x O 4 with Na 2 CO 3 . This study is expected to provide theoretical support for the development of efficient vanadium-chromium extraction processes.

Structural reconstruction and selective extraction of vanadium and chromium driven by calcium modification in the sodic roasting of high chromium vanadium slag

Weiduo Zhao,Zhongwei Zhao,Yingpeng Xu,Ziming Cao,Tianyu Zhao

High-chromium vanadium slag, a typical hazardous solid waste, serves as a critical raw material for the comprehensive utilization of vanadium and chromium resources. To achieve synergistic recovery of vanadium and chromium, this study proposes an innovative process based on mineral phase reconstruction. A ternary eutectic multi-reaction system was established, and a novel Na 2 CO 3 -CaO co-roasting-leaching method was developed to enable selective separation of V and Cr. Combining DFT calculations, pure mineral roasting experiments, and actual vanadium slag roasting validation, the transformation mechanisms were elucidated: vanadium was converted into water-insoluble NaCaVO 4 and CaVO 3 , while chromium existed as water-soluble Na 2 CrO 4 during the Na 2 CO 3 -CaO co-roasting process. Under optimized conditions (roasting temperature 900 °C, duration 90 min, molar ratio n(CaO)/n(Na 2 CO 3 ) = 1), the average leaching efficiencies reached 84.23 % for Cr in the first-stage water leaching and 86.52 % for V in the second-stage ammonium bicarbonate leaching. The Cr concentration in the water leaching solution was 4.1 g/L (V: 0.7 g/L), whereas the V concentration in the ammonia leaching solution significantly increased to 7.1 g/L (Cr: 0.8 g/L). Impurity ions (Fe, Mn, Ti, Si) in both leaching solutions remained below 0.05 g/L. The remarkably low impurity levels substantially reduced purification costs, and the distinct concentration differences between V and Cr highlighted the selective separation advantages of the proposed process. These integrated characteristics provide critical feasibility support for industrial-scale implementation.

Recycled Lithium from Simulated Pyrometallurgical Slag by Chlorination Roasting

Hui Dang,Benfeng Wang,Zhidong Chang,Xue Wu,Jingge Feng,Hualei Zhou,Wenjun Li,Changyan Sun

When the spent lithium ion battery is processed pyrometallurgically, lithium is generally fixed as slag with a high melting/boiling point which is difficult to be treated further. In this research, an innovative method to recycle lithium from pyro-slag by evaporation during chlorination roasting was proposed. Different chlorine donors, namely NaCl, AlCl3, and CaCl2 were evaluated by HSC software and experiments, among which CaCl2 possessed a stronger ability of chlorine donation in the chlorination roasting process. Experiments proved that 97.45% lithium was evaporated with the Cl/Li molar ratio of 1.8:1 when the mixture of a simulated slag and CaCl2 was roasted at 1000 °C for 90 min. XRD results demonstrated that the majority of LiAl(SiO3)2 in the slag was transformed into LiCl. All results implied that chlorination roasting should be a promising strategy for lithium recovery from the pyrometallurgical slag after pyro-treatment of the spent lithium ion battery.

Pyrometallurgical recovery of zinc and valuable metals from hazardous blast furnace dust via self-reduction roasting: Phase transformations and morphological evolution

B. Chen,X. Yi,W. Zhan,L. Gao,Z. He,J. Zhang

Blast furnace dust (Zn–Fe dust) containing high heavy metal contents is a hazardous waste, and it is derived from the gravity dust removal system and bag dust removal system of a blast furnace. This study elucidated the underlying reasons for the poor separation of Zn and Fe and recommended conditions for the carbothermic reduction roasting process. The results indicated that the poor efficiencies for Zn and Fe separation from Zn–Fe dust were caused by the formation and gradient reduction of wustite (Fe y Zn 1-y O). A higher reduction temperature, longer reduction time and basicity created an advantageous environment for reduction of the wustite intermediate phase and enabled synergistic catalytic reduction of the wustite phase (Fe y Zn 1-y O and Fe y Ca 1-y O). The formation and reduction of the wustite phase (Fe y Zn 1-y O and Fe y Ca 1-y O) are crucial steps in reduction roasting of olivine (Zn y Fe 2-y SiO 4 ) and Zn x Fe 3−x O 4 with a spinel crystal structure. After adjusting the experimental parameters, the efficiencies for recovery of Zn and Fe from the Zn–Fe dust reached 95.12 % and 96.55 %, respectively.

Selective Recovery of Lithium from Spent Lithium-Ion Batteries via Sulfite-Assisted Reduction Roasting

Luyao Xu,Xuan Han,Jingping Hu,Huijie Hou,Longmin Liu,Jingjing Zhou,Yanrun Mei,Ran Chen,Jiakuan Yang

Green sustainable development has become a critical focus in the recycling of spent lithium-ion batteries. This study introduces a novel and efficient method for the selective extraction of lithium from cathode materials of spent lithium-ion batteries, operating at a significantly milder roasting temperature (650 °C). The process involves the homogeneous mixing of recovered cathode materials with sodium sulfite, followed by oxygen-free roasting and subsequent water leaching. By controlling the structural evolution of the products, the process achieves highly efficient lithium recovery. The phase transformations of the cathode materials are investigated by advanced characterization techniques during the reaction and elucidate the selective leaching mechanism: through precise control of sodium sulfite dosage and roasting temperature, nickel, cobalt, and manganese remained stable in the solid residue as low-valence oxides, notably preserving nickel’s original valence state, while lithium was converted to water-soluble sulfate, thereby achieving efficient selective leaching. Under optimized conditions, i.e., a sodium sulfite-to-cathode material molar ratio of 3:1, roasting time of 150 min, and roasting temperature of 650 °C, the cathode materials were predominantly transformed into LiNaSO4 and other metal oxides. The roasting process, conducted under an inert atmosphere to prevent the formation of gaseous sulfur oxides, demonstrated environmental sustainability with negligible emissions, while the subsequent water leaching phase was performed under mild conditions, yielding an exceptional lithium extraction efficiency of 96%. Furthermore, Ni, Co, and Mn elements remained in the water leaching residue in the form of oxides, simplifying their subsequent recovery. The proposed process offers significant advantages of low energy consumption and environmental sustainability, thereby presenting a promising pathway for selective lithium extraction and resource recovery from spent lithium-ion batteries.

Recycling of Li and Co from spent LiCoO2 cathode materials through a low-temperature urea-assisted sulfation roasting approach

Yichuan Kong,Yongzhi Duan,Yuezhi Zhang,Yulin Min,Hongxiu Lu,Penghui Shi

The lithium-ion battery industry is experiencing explosive growth. Efficiently and greenly recycling Li, Co and other valuable metals is extremely important to alleviate the scarcity of resources and protect the environment. In this study, an improved recycling strategy is proposed to convert spent LiCoO2 batteries into water-soluble sulfate below 350 °C using the auxiliary effect of urea on sulfation roasting. This strategy not only allows for the direct synthesis of precursors for regeneration after selective recovery of lithium and cobalt but also further reduces the roasting temperature requirement compared to the conventional salt-thermal method. After roasting, Li and Co can be recovered from the solution by simple aqueous leaching. Under optimal conditions, the leaching rates of Li and Co were 94.94% and 95.47%, respectively. Subsequently, the Li and Co compounds that could be used as battery precursors were obtained by the addition of CO32−. Characterized by high efficiency, low energy consumption, absence of secondary pollution, and utilization of inexpensive and readily accessible raw materials, this approach offers a novel concept in the domain of lithium-ion battery recycling via salt-thermal methods.

High-efficiency recycling of Mo and Ni from spent HDS catalysts: Enhanced oxidation with O2-rich roasting and selective separation with organic acid leaching- complexation extraction

Haoran Yu,Changmin Liu,Shuo Liu,Yu Gu,Shuya Wang,Ali Yaraş,Linchao Hu,Wenyi Zhang,Mingguo Peng,Hasan Arslanoğlu,Linqiang Mao

Spent petroleum refining catalyst is regarded as the important secondary resource for valuable metals. However, common recycling strategies, including soda roasting, acid and alkaline solutions leaching and chemically precipitation, produced large quantities of high salinity wastewater. This study proposed an efficient method to recovery of Mo and Ni from the spent hydrodesulfurization (HDS) catalyst via O 2 -rich roasting and organic acid leaching with the advantage of less salinity wastewater production. The transformation of Mo(IV) into soluble Mo(VI) was enhanced by O 2 -rich atmosphere roasting, and 98.64% of Mo(IV) was oxidized at 650 ℃ for 2 h in atmosphere containing 30% of O 2 . The oxidation process of Mo(IV) was agreed with the shrinkage pore model, and regulated by surface reaction and internal diffusion. 97.97% of Mo(VI) was leached from roasted product by oxalic acid , separated with complexation extraction agent of Ala-TBP and recovered as (NH 4 ) 8 Mo 10 O 34 and (NH 4 ) 2 Mo 3 O 10 by evaporative crystallization. Ni was leached out from spent catalyst with 1 mol/L acetic acid, and precipitated as NiC 2 O 4 with oxalic acid . 95.92% of Mo and 96.77% of Ni were recovered from spent HDS catalyst with this recycling route. This study provided a high-efficient and eco-friendly method to recovery of valuable metals from spent catalyst.
