High contents of heavy metals and Cl are major challenges for incineration residue disposal. Classification by the Chinese government and the coronavirus disease 2019 pandemic have changed the characteristics of incineration residues, thereby increasing the difficulty of disposal. In this study, medical waste incineration fly ash (MWI FA) was proposed as an additive to promote chlorination volatilization of heavy metals from municipal solid waste incineration fly ash (MSWI FA) and medical waste incineration slag (MWI S). When the mixing ratio of MWI FA to MSWI FA was 1:3, the chlorination volatilization efficiencies of Cu, Zn, Pb, and Cd at 1000 °C for 60 min were 50.2%, 99.4%, 99.7%, and 97.9%, respectively. When MWI FA was mixed with MWI S at a ratio of 1:1, the chlorination volatilization efficiencies of Cu, Zn, Pb, and Cd at 1200 °C for 40 min were 88.9%, 99.7%, 97.3%, and 100%, respectively. Adding MWI FA can replenish Cl in MSWI FA and MWI S while increasing the surface area and forming pore structures by sublimation of NaCl and decomposition of CaSO 4 , or can reduce the melting point and viscosity by Na 2 O destroying the glass matrix. Therefore, MWI FA can be co-disposed with MSWI FA and MWI S respectively to enhance the chlorination volatilization of heavy metals.

The release and migration of heavy metals from the industrial sludge has become one of the most serious environmental threats, which is urgently required to be relieved. Heavy metals can be stabilized by using ceramic precursors, via interactions with aluminum (Al), silicon (Si) and iron (Fe) as the major components. The sewage sludge incineration ash (SSA) can be recognized as a type of ceramic raw materials due to the abundant content of Al, Si and Fe, which make it possible to be beneficially used for heavy metal stabilization. This study investigated the stabilization of lead (Pb), zinc (Zn), and copper (Cu) after ceramic sintering with the SSA as ceramic precursors, and further explored the influences of heavy metal types and contents on phase transformation and immobilization effect. Results show that the heavy metals could achieve co-stabilization by the SSA in reaction series with different metal types and contents (Pb-Zn and Pb-Cu). Pb tends to combine with Al, Si and P to form PbAl 2 Si 2 O 8 and Pb 3 (PO 4 ) 3 , while Zn was finally incorporated into a spinel solid solution (ZnFe x Al 2-x O 4 ). Meanwhile, Cu is more likely to combine with Fe with the generation of CuFe 2 O 4 which will be transformed to CuFeO 2 with elevated temperatures. In both Pb-Zn and Pb-Cu series, the Zn and Cu were distributed in crystal grains while Pb was in regions around the grains. Moreover, the leachability of Pb, Zn and Cu can be substantially decreased with the eventual incorporation of the heavy metals into different product phases by the SSA. Therefore, through this study the coimmobilization of heavy metals in the simulated industrial waste can be realized by the utilization of sewage sludge incineration ash as ceramic precursors.

Whether the presence of microplastics (MPs) affects the clean incineration of dyeing sludge (DS), especially focusing on the leaching behavior of Cu and Zn from their incineration bottom ashes (BAs), has become an emerging issue. This study tries to explore the effects of typical polyethylene terephthalate (PET) and polyvinyl chloride (PVC) MPs on leaching behavior of Cu and Zn in BAs, and reveal its inner mechanism. Results showed the presence of MPs raised the leaching rate, namely, both MPs accelerated the leaching of Cu and Zn, which eliminated the risk to human health and to the environment. The regulating mechanism to the Cu and Zn leaching behavior in DS-MPs BAs could be attributed to their amorphous structure. It included: (1) Under low MPs content, Cl and polarity actions derived from MPs destroyed the amorphous structure and promoted Cu and Zn leaching. (2) Under high MPs content, the generation of the amorphous Si/Al structure relieved the Cu and Zn leaching, where Cu and Zn were tightly bonded to [SiO 4 ] or [AlO 4 ] and existed stably in BAs. Despite 30% MPs could relief the release of HMs to a certain extent, the existence of MPs still aggravated the HMs threat of DS BA in actual scene.

This contribution reports the occurrence forms and leachability of major inorganic elements and heavy metals in the solid residue from smouldering combustion of sewage sludge (SS). Under the experimental conditions (moisture content: 50 wt%; sand-to-SS (wet) mass ratio of 4:1; and Darcy air flux: 3.5 cm/s), self-sustaining is achieved, destructing ∼98% of carbon in the SS and yielding a solid ash residue rich in Si, Al, P, Fe, K and Ca. The results from BCR (European Community Bureau of Reference) sequential extraction suggest that, majority of Na, K, Al, and Fe in the smouldering residue are presented as stable residue form, while Mg and Ca exist predominantly as acid-soluble. P in the residue is contributed by both reducible and residue fractions. All the heavy metals (As, Cr, Cd, Pb, Ni and Cu) in the residue are dominated by residue form, except Zn, which exists mainly as acid-soluble and reducible forms. Leachability tests demonstrate that considerable amounts of Ca (15.23—18.82%), Mg (11.92—16.74%), and K (5.91—7.04%) are readily leached out from the smouldering residue under pH 4.2—12.0. The concentrations of all the heavy metals in leachate meet the relevant regulatory values as determined by Toxicity Characteristic Leaching Procedure (TCLP). The smouldering residue generated here has potential to recover nutrients and is safe to be disposed via landfilling, addressing the environmental concerns that hinder the further development of smouldering combustion as a SS treatment technology.

View large Download slide View large Download slide Close modal Recovering phosphorus from incineration sludge sewage ash (ISSA) is a well-established technology, with a greater recovery potential than that of supernatant or sludge. ISSA can be utilized as a secondary raw material in the fertilizer industry, or as a fertilizer if heavy metal concentrations do not exceed permissible limits, thus reducing the cost of phosphorus recovery. Increasing the temperature to produce ISSA with higher solubility and plant availability of phosphorus is advantageous for both pathways. But a decrease in the extraction of phosphorus is also observed at high temperatures, thereby diminishing the overall economic benefits. In this study, CaCl 2 was utilized to mitigate the decrease in the extraction rate and also to promote the bioavailability of phosphorus. The addition of CaCl 2 (80 g/kg of dry sludge) effectively promoted the conversion of non-apatite inorganic phosphorus to apatite inorganic phosphorus at a rate of 87.73% at 750 °C. Furthermore, the decrease in the extraction rate of phosphorus at 1,050 °C was comparatively smaller in the presence of CaCl 2 . If iron flocculants are used to capture P in wastewater management, it may be necessary to pay special attention to the amount of addition and incineration temperature to maximize the economic potential of recycling. The decrease in the extraction of phosphorus at high temperatures is due to the enwrapping of some phosphorus-containing minerals by molten phases. The decrease in the extraction of phosphorus in sludge ash at high temperatures is mitigated by CaCl 2 . The acceptable conversion rate of apatite inorganic phosphorus (87%) can be achieved at 750 °C with a Ca/P ratio of 2.0.

Secondary sulfur pollution in dyeing sludge (DS) during drying and incineration is a major environmental problem necessitating in-situ control. To robustly immobilise sulfur during drying–incineration, the authors introduce an electromagnetic induction (EMI) drying method and reveal the corresponding migration and conversion of sulfur in DS. The EMI-drying efficiency reached 10.69%/min, five times that of thermal drying. EMI drying increases the relative sulfoxide ratio from that of thermal drying. In a sludge–sulfur model, the proposed treatment promoted the oxidation and decomposition of organic sulfur without noticeably affecting the inorganic sulfur. The selective oxidation process during EMI drying promotes sulfur stabilisation in dried DS, decreasing the performance and stability of DS combustion. The sulfur-containing pollutants released during the incineration of DS mainly contain H 2 S, followed by CH 3 SH and SO 2 . EMI drying increases the outputs of SO 2 and CH 3 SH but decreases the outputs H 2 S and total sulfur compared with the outputs of thermal drying. Under the sulfur-model conditions, EMI promoted the conversion of inorganic sulfur to sulfur-containing gases (especially H 2 S) during incineration. In contrast, the sulfur stabilised by partial oxidation of organic sulfur in the EMI-dried DS was not easily converted to gaseous sulfur during subsequent combustion. Overall, EMI inhibits the release of sulfur during the combined drying–incineration process of DS.

Leachate from municipal solid waste (MSW) incineration harbors a plethora of contaminants, including antibiotics and antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs). However, the understanding of such leachate is markedly scant in comparison to that of landfill leachate. In this study, the distribution and removal of 8 sulfonamides (SAs), 4 quinolones (FQs), and 4 macrolides (MLs) antibiotics in leachate from 14 MSW incineration plants in representative cities across different regions of China were investigated. In addition, potential factors affecting the contamination levels of antibiotics and ARGs in fresh leachate were evaluated. The results showed that the total concentration of target antibiotics in fresh leachate ranged from 4406.1 to 14,930.6 ng/L. Notably, the antibiotic distribution in leachate exhibited regional disparities, influenced by economic status, climatic conditions, and waste separation policies. The absolute abundance of total ARGs ranged from 1.3 × 10 7 –4.0 × 10 8 copies/mL, with the mobile genetic elements intl1 facilitates the dissemination of qnrS, sul1 and sul2. No distinct regional distribution of the ARGs was observed among different cities. Antibiotic and ARGs distributions were significantly correlated with total organic carbon, pH, ammonia nitrogen, heavy metals, and microbial communities. Moreover, SAs were identified as contributors to the proliferation and spread of corresponding ARGs. Fourteen typical "anaerobic-anoxic/aerobic-anoxic/aerobic-ultrafiltration-nanofiltration " treatment processes removed the target antibiotics effectively (76.1 %-97.0 %). Biodegradation was considered to be the dominant antibiotic removal pathway, removing 62.0 %-90.9 % of antibiotics, while sludge adsorption removed only 1.0 %-11.7 %. This research furnishes valuable insights into the fate of antibiotics in MSW incineration leachate.

With rapid economic growth and urbanisation, the reuse and recycling of solid wastes has become a high priority for the sustainable development of modern cities. In this study, two typical solid wastes, incinerated sewage sludge ash (ISSA) and waste bentonite , were co-valorised to produce granular adsorbents through a simple and energy-saving pelletisation/sintering process. A mixture of ISSA and bentonite at a weight ratio of 3:1 was pelletised and sintered at 700 °C. The resultant ceramsite, with good mechanical strength, could effectively remove Pb(Ⅱ) from aqueous solutions. The adsorption kinetics can be described by the pseudo-first-order (PFO) model. The results indicated that the Pb(Ⅱ) adsorption process was dominated by electrostatic attraction , precipitation, and complexation. The isothermal data exhibited a good correlation with the Freundlich model, indicating that the adsorption process was non-ideal and spontaneous. The maximum adsorption capacity was approximately 21.6 ± 0.35 mg/g at 318 K. After 5 cycles of regeneration, the adsorbent maintained good adsorption performance. Moreover, the removal rate was not greatly affected by ionic strength . These findings demonstrate that the granular adsorbent prepared with ISSA and waste bentonite can be recognised as a promising adsorbent for Pb-containing wastewater treatment .

Medical waste incineration ash (MWIA) has significant concentrations of heavy metals, dioxins, and chlorine that, if handled incorrectly, might cause permanent damage to the environment and humans. The low content of calcium (Ca), silicon (Si), and aluminum (Al) is a brand-new challenge for the melting technique of MWIA. This work added coal fly ash (CFA) to explore the effect of melting on the detoxication treatment of MWIA. It was found that the produced vitrification product has a high vitreous content (98.61%) and a low potential ecological risk, with an initial ash solidification rate of 67.38%. By quantitatively assessing the morphological distribution features of heavy metals in ashes before melting and molten products, the stabilization and solidification rules of heavy metals during the melting process were investigated. This work ascertained the feasibility of co-vitrification of MWIA and CFA. In addition, the high-temperature melting and vitrification accelerated the detoxification of MWIA and the solidification of heavy metals.

Municipal solid waste incineration (MSWI), a promising technology for managing MSWI capacity, has a large amount of CO 2 in its flue gas emissions, but lacks effective means of carbon reduction. Modification of CaO-based sorbents using fly ash, a solid waste from coal-fired power plants, is a potential application to improve CO 2 capture capacity. In this study, a cost-effective fly ash-CaO sorbent was developed by combining high-calcium and high-magnesium fly ash with CaO by hydration. The CO 2 capture capacity and carbonation conversion of fly ash-CaO sorbents were investigated at different temperatures, CO 2 partial pressures and doping ratios in a calcination/carbonation reaction system. Optimum carbonation reaction temperature (760℃) for CaO and optimum calcination temperature (850℃) for fly ash were obtained. In the experiment of CaO doped with fly ash, the novel sorbents prepared by CaO doped with fly ash at a mass ratio of 3:1 had the highest carbonation conversion (98.88 %). The hydration reaction promoted the transformation of CaO to Ca(OH) 2 , which improved the CO 2 capture capacity of the sorbents. The inert materials (Al 2 O 3 , SiO 2 ) in the fly ash were uniformly distributed as structural skeleton in the sorbents, enhancing the structural stability and anti-sintering ability. The S element contained in the fly ash competes with CO 2 for adsorption sites and produces stable CaSO 4 , which reduces the carbon capture capacity of the sorbents. A unique mineralization sequestration process for MSWI carbon capture is proposed that is economical and industrially viable. A promising route to improve CO 2 capture performance with waste reutilization is emphasized.

Municipal solid waste incineration fly ash (MSWIFA) is a hazardous waste with high alkalinity and is rich in heavy metals (HMs) and chlorine. To facilitate resource disposal, this paper proposes recycle MSWIFA as an alkali activator to develop low-carbon and cement-free alkali-activated materials. The designed MSWIFA-activated slag exhibited impressive compressive strength (>70 MPa). The microstructure of the MSWIFA-activated slags was tightly filled with various reaction products, including ettringite, calcium aluminosilicate hydrate (C-A-S-H), and Friedel’s salt. The leaching behaviors of the HMs and chlorine were significantly restricted owing to the chemical fixation of the reaction products and the dense microstructure of the MSWIFA-activated slags. The immobilization of chlorine primarily depended on the formation of Friedel’s salt, and the remaining chlorine could be captured by the positively charged sites of C-A-S-H. The reaction mechanism of the designed MSWIFA-activated slags could be divided into three stages: ettringite precipitation, C-A-S-H formation, and Friedel’s salt generation. This paper provides constructive insights into the resource utilization of hazardous waste and contributes to the development of low-carbon alkali-activated materials.

Bio-residue is a by-product from organic waste anaerobic digestion process with high moisture, high organic matter, low calorific value and poor biological stability, and may be incinerated after deep dewatering. The moisture existence forms of bio-residue were clarified firstly, finding that adsorbed water, capillary water and bound water occupied 75.61%, 23.81% and 0.58%, respectively. Furthermore, refuse incineration bottom ash was used as a typical deep dewatering reagent, when compared with calcium oxide (CaO), refuse incineration fly ash and iron powder–potassium persulfate (Fe(0)-K 2 S 2 O 8 ). Results showed that the addition of bottom ash powder could decrease the bio-residue’s moisture from 80.0% to 37.9% at the optimal dosage of 2.0%, and corresponding low calorific value reached 10.5 MJ/kg at the 10 th d. It was suggested that ZnCl 2 and ZnSO 4 present in bottom ash powder could react with moisture in bio-residue, forming hydrates of inorganic salt and breaking the polyacrylamide colloid, and lead to the release of adsorbed water in the bio-residue.
