Processing SCNT(SrCo0.8Nb0.1Ta0.1O3-δ)-SCDC(Ce0.8Sm0.05Ca0.15O2-δ) composite into semiconductor-ionic membrane fuel cell (SIMFC) to operate below 500 °C

Xiyu Nie,Dan Zheng,Ying Chen,Baoyuan Wang,Chen Xia,Wenjing Dong,Xunying Wang,Hao Wang,Bin Zhu

High power density performance at intermediate (600 °C–450 °C) temperatures (IT) must be considered in the development of solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC). A niobium and tantalum co-doped perovskite material SCNT (SrCo 0. 8 Nb 0 . 1 Ta 0 . 1 O 3-δ ) can be used as a cathode for IT-SOFC due to its (H + /O 2− /e − ) triple conduction and promising catalysis activity. In this work, the SCNT was composited with ionic conductor SCDC(Ce 0.8 Sm 0.05 Ca 0 . 15 O 2-δ ) and processed as electrolyte membrane into semiconductor-ionic membrane fuel cell (SIMFC), which delivered an appreciable performance at IT, i.e., a peak power output of 1016 mW/cm 2 at 550 °C and 401 mW/cm 2 at 450 °C, respectively. The high performance mainly originated from the (H + /O 2− ) dual-ion conduction of SCNT as well as the high oxygen ion conductivity of SCDC, the SCNT-SCDC electrolyte layer adjacent to cathode have promoted the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) with some extent because of the excellent catalysis activity of SCNT. Moreover, the on-line generated carbonate suppressed the electronic conductivity and resulted in the attractive density of SCNT-SCDC electrolyte to further contribute to the desired cell performance.

Portable proton exchange membrane fuel cell using polyoxometalates as multi-functional hydrogen carrier

Yuanting Shen,Xiaohui Yan,Liang An,Shuiyun Shen,Lu An,Junliang Zhang

Proton exchange membrane fuel cell (PEMFC) is an ideal energy-conversion technology for portable, motile as well as stationary applications. However, the use as a portable power source is still hindered by the stringent requirements for hydrogen storage. Herein, we propose a PEMFC system using hydrogenable polyoxometalate (POM) solution as hydrogen carrier that enables the whole system to work under atmospheric temperature and pressure. A proof-of-concept air-breathing PEMFC is constructed and three typical POMs are tested, the corresponding results demonstrate good cell performance and stability. Another impressive result shows that the hydrogen carrier, POMs, can be hydrogenated by multiple hydrogen sources such as H 2 , H 2 O and NaBH 4 through both electrochemical and chemical ways. The newly designed system obtained a peak power density of 51 mW cm −2 , making the real-world application of portable PEMFC possible.

One stone, two birds: an impregnated net-like layer boosts oxygen reduction activity by removing and transforming surface segregation

Yanling Zhou,Yang Gao,Guichan Chen,Mingyu Jiang,Dehong Huang,Zezhi Zeng,Yangjun Zhang,Dengjie Chen

Alkaline-earth segregation and low electronic conductivity restrict the practical applications of high-performance cathodes in solid oxide fuel cells (SOFCs) and protonic ceramic fuel cells (PCFCs). To address these issues, a unique electrode structure with a sintered active backbone coated with an in situ-formed porous net-like PrCoO 3 (PCO) layer is developed. The effectiveness of this strategy is demonstrated using Ba 0.5 Sr 0.5 Co 0.8 Fe 0.2 O 3−δ (BSCF), known for unprecedented oxygen reduction activity but with a great tendency to cause segregation and low electrical conductivity. This design leverages the beneficial characteristics of BSCF and PCO: the BSCF backbone provides high oxygen reduction activity, while the porous net-like PCO layer generated in situ offers high electrical conductivity. More importantly, this approach has the ability to eliminate potential surface segregation and even utilize the segregation by element interdiffusion to form a coating layer with high oxygen reduction activity. Therefore, the PCO-coated BSCF cathode (BSCF–PCO) offers impressive cell performance with a low area-specific polarization resistance of 0.02 Ω cm 2 at 600 °C using a symmetric cell and a maximum power density of 1835 mW cm −2 at 600 °C using an anode-supported fuel cell, which are superior to the cells with the state-of-the-art BSCF (i.e., 0.04 Ω cm 2 and 987 mW cm −2 ). Furthermore, this strategy significantly boosts the activity of other cathode materials such as Ba 0.5 Sr 0.5 Fe 0.8 Zn 0.2 O 3−δ , a typical cathode for PCFCs. This study thus provides a facile, universal in situ strategy for constructing high-performance cathodes by removing and transforming surface segregation for SOFCs and PCFCs.

Environmental decontamination using photocatalytic fuel cells and photoelectrocatalysis-microbial fuel cells

Rui He,Lifen Liu,Peng Shi,Cheng Nie

BACKGROUND To decontaminate sites of pollutants, fuel cell and bio-electrochemical fuel cell reactors can degrade pollutants and generate electricity simultaneously, potentially decrease cost, energy consumptions and treatment cycle. In this study, a photocatalytic fuel cell (PFC) and PEC-MFC (integrated photo-electro-catalysis with microbial fuel cell) were investigated to decontaminate sand/water polluted by RhB, antibiotics and heavy metal ions. RESULTS In the PFC, paired electrodes with ZnIn 2 S 4 -AgAgCl/GO or ZnIn 2 S 4 -RGO/MnO 2 , effectively removed pollutants in sand/water. The removal of RhB was 95.6% in 100 min with an external resistance of 1 Ω under aeration. Adding cyclo-dextrin increased pollutant removals, realized 66% removal of RhB in overlying water, and significant removal in sand after 5 h, and 70% removal of tetracycline in overlying water, but only 60% without cyclodextrin after 4 h. Adding KMnO 4 and NaHSO 3 promoted decontamination of tetracycline from sand/water, tetracycline in water was almost completely degraded in 3.5 h with the addition, but only about 65% without any addition. In the PEC-MFC, integrating photo-electro-catalytic electrode with bio-anode, Cr(VI) in the cathode chamber was reduced rapidly and the concentration of RhB in sand decreased quickly, nearly complete in 2 h. The Cr(VI) in sand was reduced in several hours, so that, compared with previous reports, the treatment time is significantly shortened. CONCLUSION The PFC and PEC-MFC systems are successful in decontaminating sand/water in polluted sites and are cost-effective and sustainable methods. By building an on-site or off-site system with washing and cycling of the liquid stream, it could be a convenient remediation method for polluted sites. © 2018 Society of Chemical Industry

Lamellar structured Ce-S-NC heterogeneous electrocatalyst as the highly durable cathode for passive direct liquid fuel cells

Yuan Fang,Shiyu Ji,Xin Wu,Jianfeng Zhu

Passive direct liquid fuel cells are promising power generation devices with the advantages of convenient transportation, storage for liquid fuel and high power density. This paper focuses on improving the intrinsic electrocatalytic performance and durability of nitrogen-doped carbon (N-C) cathodic electrocatalysts. Then, lamellar structured Ce-S-NC heterogeneous electrocatalyst was synthesized and used as a highly durable cathode for two types of passive direct liquid fuel cells, i.e. , direct methanol fuel cells (DMFCs) and direct borohydride fuel cells (DBFCs). In this work, the effect of the S/C molar ratio on the microstructure and electrocatalytic performance of the Ce-S-NC electrocatalysts was investigated, and excellent intrinsic oxygen reduction reaction activity was obtained at an S/C molar ratio of 0.15. The peak power densities of Ce-S-NC based DMFCs reached up to 12.5, 23.6 and 41.9 mW·cm −2 at 20, 40 and 60 °C, respectively. The peak power densities of 59.3, 84.6 and 132.6 mW·cm −2 were obtained in Ce-S-NC based DBFCs at 20, 40 and 60 °C, respectively. In the durability tests, both the Ce-S-NC based air-breathing DBFCs and passive DBFCs showed the stable operation than that of N-C and Ce-NC. When the current density increased from 50 to 150 mA·cm −2 , the Ce-S-NC based DBFC can be operated for 882 h, and only 34 and 91 h for that of N-C and Ce-NC. The electrochemical impedance spectroscopy tests proved Ce-S-NC based DBFC showed the faster mass transfer efficiency. The outstanding durability of Ce-S-NC is mainly attributed to the improved defect density and mass transfer.

Luo Yue,Zhan Feng Deng,Hui Tan,Gui Zhi Xu,Xiao Hu,Jie Song,Gao Qun Zhang,Peng Xiang Song,Xiao Tong Liu

Bipolar plates are a key part of fuel cells. The optimal hot press temperature, pressure, and time were determined in this study. The press condition can directly affect the relative density, thereby improving the conductivity and mechanical property. Several carbon black doped samples were also successfully prepared on the basis of the optimized preparation method. Results show that carbon black optimized the conductivity due to the “conduction bridge”. The maximum conductivity and bending strength reached 345 S/cm and 32.5 MPa, respectively. Key words: fuel cells; bipolar plate; graphite; composite materials.

Electrocatalytic Oxidation of Small Molecule Alcohols over Pt, Pd, and Au Catalysts: The Effect of Alcohol’s Hydrogen Bond Donation Ability and Molecular Structure Properties

Bei Wang,Liu Tao,Yu Cheng,Fang Yang,Yuguang Jin,Chunmei Zhou,Hao Yu,Yanhui Yang

The direct alcohol fuel cell is a kind of power generation device that directly converts the chemical energy of small molecule alcohols into electric energy. In this paper, the electro-oxidation behaviors of some typical alcohols (methanol, ethanol, ethylene glycol, n-propanol, 2-propanol, and glycerol) over Pt, Pd, and Au electrodes were investigated in acidic, neutral, and alkaline media, respectively. By analyzing the activity information from a cyclic voltammetry (CV) method and some dynamic tests, several regularities were revealed in those electro-oxidation behaviors. Firstly, alkaline media is the best for the electro-oxidation of all these alcohols over Pt, Pd, and Au catalysts. Secondly, the hydrogen bond donation abilities (HBD) of different alcohols were found have a great relationship with the catalytic performance. In alkaline media, on Pt electrodes, the solute HBD is positively correlated with the ease of electrooxidation within the scope of this experiment. Contrarily, it is negatively correlated on Pd and Au electrodes. Additionally, for Pt catalysts in acidic and neutral media, the relationship becomes negative again as the HBD increases. Finally, the alcohol’s molecular structure properties were found to have a remarkably influence on the activity of different catalysts. Over the Pt electrode in alkaline media, the activation energy of methanol oxidation is 44.1 KJ/mol, and is obviously lower than the oxidation of other alcohols. Under similar conditions, the lowest activation energy was measured in the oxidation of n-propanol (14.4 KJ/mol) over the Pd electrode, and in the oxidation of glycerol (42.2 KJ/mol) over the Au electrode. Totally, among all these electrodes, Pt electrodes showed the best activities on the oxidation of C1 alcohol, Pd electrodes were more active on the oxidation of C2-3 monobasic alcohols, and Au electrodes were more active on the oxidation of polybasic alcohols.Keywords:DAFCs;electro-oxidation;gold;palladium;platinum

Dimensionally-stable phosphoric acid–doped polybenzimidazoles for high-temperature proton exchange membrane fuel cells

Xiaobai Li,Hongwei Ma,Yanchao Shen,Wei Hu,Zhenhua Jiang,Baijun Liu,Michael D. Guiver

Phosphoric acid–doped polybenzimidazole (PA- m -PBI) membranes are widely investigated for high temperature proton exchange membrane fuel cells because of their low cost and high performance. For this system, a major challenge is in achieving a good compromise between the phosphoric acid doping level and the membrane dimensional-mechanical stability. Different from the established PA- m -PBI system, the present work investigates two types of PA-PBI membranes incorporating flexible ether linkages and asymmetric bulky pendants (phenyl and methylphenyl), which exhibit much better dimensional-mechanical stability after immersing in PA solution, even at high temperature for an extended period. This superior stability allowed higher acid doping levels (20.6 and 24.6) to be achieved, thus increasing proton conductivity (165 and 217 mS cm −1 at 200 °C under anhydrous conditions) as well as significantly improving fuel cell performance . The peak power densities in hydrogen/air fuel cell were 279 and 320 mW cm −2 at 160 °C, without humidification . Molecular simulation , density and fractional free volume, and wide-angle X-ray diffraction were used to investigate their structure-property relationships.

Ultralow Pt Doped on N-based Carbon as a Promising Electrocatalyst for High-Temperature Proton Exchange Membrane Fuel Cells

Feng Zhang,Dongqing Zhang,Wenqi Liu,Jiyuan Miao,Xiaojin Li

Developing a feasible method to massively fabricate low-cost and efficient oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) catalysts is highly anticipated to the commercialization of fuel cells. In this work, N atoms were doped into inert sp2 configuration to alter the spin and charge distribution in the carbon matrix. The Pt/H2–N–C catalyst was successfully prepared by embedding ultralow Pt nanoparticles on N-based carbon. Results indicated that the protonated N-groups at edge sites efficiently regulated the absorption of the PtCl62– anion and widely limited the migration of Pt species at 1000 °C. The acquired Pt/H2–N–C electrocatalyst exhibited high ORR performance in the acidic electrolyte. The high-temperature proton exchange membrane fuel cell (HT-PEMFC) measurement illustrated that the open-circuit voltage and power density of the Pt/H2–N–C catalyst were higher than those of the commercial 20% Pt/C at 150 °C. This work provided a facile strategy to obtain efficient and low-cost Pt catalysts for ORR and HT-PEMFCs.

Boron-phosphorus dual-doped graphene supported AuPd nanocatalyst for high-efficiency direct methanol and formic acid fuel cells: Toward sustainable energy solutions

Ze Qin,Henan Shang,Qiuyue Fan,Qi Jia,Lubin Sun,Sijia Li

Direct methanol fuel cells (DMFCs) and direct formic acid fuel cells (DFAFCs) are promising energy conversion technologies due to the high energy density and environmental compatibility. Nevertheless, the widespread application has been hindered by the lack of efficient and durable electrocatalysts capable of simultaneously addressing sluggish reaction kinetics and catalyst poisoning. Herein, a boron-phosphorus dual-doped graphene (BPG) supported AuPd nanoparticles (NPs) is successfully synthesized via a straightforward chemical reduction approach. Au-Pd alloying has modulated the d-band center of Pd, changed the electronic structure of Pd, and also generated a significant bimetallic synergistic effect, thus enhancing the resistance to CO poisoning and improving the performance of the catalyst. Moreover, the BPG support with high defect density and enhanced electron transport capability facilitates uniform nanoparticle dispersion and stabilizes catalytic intermediates. Compared to commercial Pd/C (0.42 A mg Pd -1 for MOR and 0.53 A mg Pd -1 for FAOR), the Au 0.4 Pd 0.6 /BPG catalyst demonstrates superior mass activities of 6.16 A mg Pd -1 for MOR and 10.10 A mg Pd -1 for FAOR . In addition, the Au 0.4 Pd 0.6 /BPG catalyst exhibits excellent long-term durability in both alkaline methanol and acidic formic acid solutions. This study provides a strategic design for supported bimetallic catalysts, which accelerates the development of high-performance fuel cells. This development is consistent with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDG), specifically SDG 7 (Affordable and Clean Energy) and SDG 13 (Climate Action), by fostering the development of energy conversion technologies that are both low-emission and efficient and that are suitable for off-grid and portable power applications.

Characterization and properties of polypyrrole modified ZnIn2S4/TiO2/Ti photoanode in photocatalytic fuel cell

Yunlan Xu,Jiaxin Mou,Lin Dong,Qingmei Qiao,Dengjie Zhong

The performance of photocatalytic fuel cell (PFC) depends on photoanode, which is the key to generate photoexcited carriers and degrade organic wastes. In this study, ZnIn 2 S 4 nano-bandgap semiconductor and polypyrrole were used to modify TiO 2 to prepare polypyrrole/ZnIn 2 S 4 /TiO 2 /Ti photoanode to increase its photo-response range and the separation of photoexcited carriers. The PFC with polypyrrole/ZnIn 2 S 4 /TiO 2 /Ti photoanode and copper cathode was built to degrade RhB and generate electricity. The RhB removal rate, open-circuit voltage, short-circuit current density, and maximum power density of the photocatalytic fuel cell were 94.6 % (1 h), 0.47 V, 0.23 mA cm −2 and 21.11 μW cm −2 , respectively. The improvement of PFC performance is attributed to the good visible-light responsive properties of polypyrrole/ZnIn 2 S 4 .The presence of polypyrrole acts as both an electron donor and a hole acceptor, which provides an ideal pathway for the separation and transmission of photogenerated carriers. The synergistic effect of polypyrrole, ZnIn 2 S 4 and TiO 2 eventually increases the photocatalytic ability of the PFC. This research can offer reference for the study of TiO 2 -based efficient visible light responsive PFC.

A micro photocatalytic fuel cell with an air-breathing, membraneless and monolithic design

Ming Xia,Rong Chen,Xun Zhu,Qiang Liao,Liang An,Zhibin Wang,Xuefeng He,Long Jiao

In this study, a membraneless, monolithic micro photocatalytic fuel cell with an air-breathing cathode was developed for simultaneous wastewater treatment and electricity generation . In this newly-developed micro photocatalytic fuel cell, the photoanode and cathode were arranged with a shoulder-to-shoulder design, forming two planar electrodes. Such design offers several advantages of enhanced mass transfer, uniform light distribution, short light transfer path, membrane elimination and easy fabrication, integration, and compatibility with other microdevices. The performance of this type fuel cell was evaluated by using methanol as a model pollutant under the alkaline condition. Experimental results indicated the developed micro photocatalytic fuel cell was able to show good photo-response to the illumination and satisfactory performance as well as durability. Parametric study on the cell performance was also performed. It was found that increasing the light intensity , methanol concentration and KOH concentration could improve the cell performance. But for the effect of the liquid flow rate , it was shown that the cell performance firstly increased with increasing the liquid flow rate and then decreased with further increasing the liquid flow rate. This study not only opens a new avenue for the design of the micro photocatalytic fuel cell but also is helpful for the optimization of the operating conditions.
