Flexible boron nitride-based composite membrane with superhydrophobic/electrothermal synergistic response for enhanced passive anti-icing and active de-icing

Ritong Wang,Delai Ouyang,Dongpeng Zhou,Zihao Li,Yuanting Deng,Mingshan Xue,Yuhua Chen,Zhen Hong,Yidan Luo,Zuozhu Yin

Ice crystals and snow adhesion can affect the operation and reliability of machines in cold, snowy conditions, so anti-freeze systems are often installed in machines. Commonly used ice protection systems usually place electrothermal and a hydrophobic layer in one layer, or create a hydrophobic layer at top of the electrothermal layer. However, the hydrophobic layer ruptures and there is a risk of a short circuit when water comes into contact with the electrically heated layer. In this paper, a method of using boron nitride film to separate the functional layer is proposed to reduce the risk of short circuit in the electric heating layer. Finally, boron nitride film is successfully used as the intermediate layer to connect the superhydrophobic layer with the electric heating layer, which realizes the passive. The results show that the contact angle of the BN-based composite membrane can reach more than 160°. Under the heating power of 0.54 W/cm 2 , the BN-based composite membrane can reach the steady state temperature of 82.6 °C in 6 min, the deicing efficiency can reach 15.435  kg h −1 m −2 , and the removal of 6 mm thick melting ice takes only 185 s. In addition, after 10 electric heating cycles, the BN-based composite membrane can still maintain a temperature of about 80 °C, indicating that it has good durability. This study is of great significance for practical ice control applications.

AC–DC electric field-induced microstructure arrangement in SiCw/SE composites for enhanced electro-thermal performance

Huanmin Yao,Haibao Mu,Wenrui Tian,Andrea Cavallini,Maoqun Shen,Wendong Li,Daning Zhang,Haoxiang Zhao,Guanjun Zhang

Advanced power modules are evolving toward higher operation voltage and miniaturization, imposing stringent challenges on the electro-thermal co-optimization of packaging materials. However, conventional doping strategies are constrained by the orientation and spatial distribution of fillers, making it difficult to simultaneously achieve high thermal conductivity and excellent electrical insulation. Precisely regulating filler orientation and spatial distribution to maximize electro-thermal synergy remains a critical challenge. This study proposes a synergistic AC-DC combined electric field induction strategy to achieve precise control over filler orientation and targeted enrichment. The AC electric field drives the electrorotation and attraction of SiC whiskers (SiCw), allowing precise orientation to maximize their nonlinear electrical conductivity and thermal conduction properties. Meanwhile, the DC electric field induces the electrophoretic migration of SiCw toward regions of high electric and thermal field concentration, enabling device-level targeted optimization. Experimental results demonstrate that this strategy enhances the thermal conductivity of SiCw/silicone elastomer (SE) composites by 333 % (reaching 0.65 W/(m·K)) while maintaining excellent thermal stability. Additionally, the nonlinear electrical conductivity coefficient is tunable within the range of 0.9 to 4.9, and the switch-field strength is reduced to 1.07 kV/mm, showing superior electric field responsiveness. Further simulations and experiments reveal that the composite reduces peak electric field stress by 32.5 % and increases the partial discharge inception voltage (PDIV) by 54.4 %, significantly enhancing the insulation reliability of power modules. This breakthrough in electro-thermal performance optimization marks a significant advancement in the electrical insulation and thermal protection of high-voltage power modules.

A superhydrophobic/electrothermal synergistically anti-icing strategy based on graphene composite

Peng Wang,Tao Yao,Ziqiang Li,Weidong Wei,Qing Xie,Wei Duan,Huilong Han

Surface icing tends to cause serious problems such as flash over and the following blackout accident. Although electrothermal system is the most widely used method, how to solve the re-freeze problem as the melted ice tend to stay on the surface is still a challenge. Here, we introduced a superhydrophobic/electrothermal synergistically anti-icing strategy based on graphene composite. The superhydrophobicity together with the high electrothermal efficiency let the graphene surface dry and clean in the simulated “glaze ice” condition. Although ice accretion would be formed on the surface when the DC voltage was off, the ice could be rapidly removed within 70 s after applying the voltage of 50 V. To enhance the durability of superhydrophobic surface, the hierarchical structure was constructed by the tri-scale nature of inorganic fillers (graphene, carbon nanotubes and silica nanoparticles). Then the hierarchical structure was partially embedded into the substrate by a dissolution and resolidification method. The coupling effect of partially-embedded structure and hierarchical structure led to the superior robustness, which could withstand sandpaper abrasion (500 g load, 8.00 m), the attack of various corrosive liquids, and low/high temperature treatment without losing superhydrophobicity. More remarkably, this graphene superhydrophobic composite retained deicing property even after 30 icing/deicing cycles.

Photo/electro-thermal synergy assisted 3D raised-fabric evaporator for efficient and sustainable seawater desalination

Songnan Zhang,Xi Wang,Guolong Li,Kaiying Zhao,Gengchen Liu,Zheng Li,Changsheng Qiao,Zhenxue Liu,Zhibin Zhang

Solar energy, as a clean and renewable resource, can be converted into thermal energy and utilized for freshwater production, holding the potential to address the freshwater shortage. Despite numerous studies focused on the development of high-efficiency solar evaporators, the challenge of achieving efficient and continuous water evaporation in low-light or dark environments still requires further investigation. Here, we design a solar evaporator system that combines photothermal and electrothermal water evaporation capabilities, using a conductive raised fabric as the matrix. The system features a PVA/MXene hydrogel-modified photothermal layer, PVA water transport layer, and polystyrene insulation. Results demonstrate that the PVA/MXene evaporator system exhibits outstanding photothermal and electrothermal conversion capabilities. Under 1 sun/10 V conditions, the surface temperature rapidly increases to 102.9 °C, significantly enhances the water evaporation rate. Meanwhile, the PVA/MXene@RF evaporator also demonstrate exceptional photoelectric water evaporation performance (3.37 kg·m −2 ·h −1 , 1 sun/10 V), high conversion efficiency (97.2 %), and effective self-desalting capabilities. This solar evaporator system, enables high-efficiency continuous water evaporation and collection even in dark or low-light conditions, making it a promising solution for addressing freshwater shortage.

Accelerating CO2 Electroreduction to Multicarbon Products via Synergistic Electric–Thermal Field on Copper Nanoneedles

Baopeng Yang,Kang Liu,HuangJingWei Li,Changxu Liu,Junwei Fu,Hongmei Li,Jianan Erick Huang,Pengfei Ou,Tartela Alkayyali,Chao Cai,Yuxia Duan,Hui Liu,Pengda An,Ning Zhang,Wenzhang Li,Xiaoqing Qiu,Chuankun Jia,Junhua Hu,Liyuan Chai,Zhang Lin,Yongli Gao,Masahiro Miyauchi,Emiliano Cortés,Stefan A. Maier,Min Liu

Electrochemical CO2 reduction is a promising way to mitigate CO2 emissions and close the anthropogenic carbon cycle. Among products from CO2RR, multicarbon chemicals, such as ethylene and ethanol with high energy density, are more valuable. However, the selectivity and reaction rate of C2 production are unsatisfactory due to the sluggish thermodynamics and kinetics of C–C coupling. The electric field and thermal field have been studied and utilized to promote catalytic reactions, as they can regulate the thermodynamic and kinetic barriers of reactions. Either raising the potential or heating the electrolyte can enhance C–C coupling, but these come at the cost of increasing side reactions, such as the hydrogen evolution reaction. Here, we present a generic strategy to enhance the local electric field and temperature simultaneously and dramatically improve the electric–thermal synergy desired in electrocatalysis. A conformal coating of ∼5 nm of polytetrafluoroethylene significantly improves the catalytic ability of copper nanoneedles (∼7-fold electric field and ∼40 K temperature enhancement at the tips compared with bare copper nanoneedles experimentally), resulting in an improved C2 Faradaic efficiency of over 86% at a partial current density of more than 250 mA cm–2 and a record-high C2 turnover frequency of 11.5 ± 0.3 s–1 Cu site–1. Combined with its low cost and scalability, the electric–thermal strategy for a state-of-the-art catalyst not only offers new insight into improving activity and selectivity of value-added C2 products as we demonstrated but also inspires advances in efficiency and/or selectivity of other valuable electro-/photocatalysis such as hydrogen evolution, nitrogen reduction, and hydrogen peroxide electrosynthesis.

Triggering ambient polymer-based Li-O2 battery via photo-electro-thermal synergy

Liping Ren,Fanpeng Kong,Xufeng Wang,Yajie Song,Xudong Li,Fang Zhang,Nan Sun,Hanwen An,Zaixing Jiang,Jiajun Wang

The limited stability and the excessive dependence on external heating sources restrict the development of polymer-based solid-state Li-O 2 batteries . Herein, we propose a multifunctional composed cathode with the photo-electro-thermal synergy to achieve a PEO-based solid-state Li-O 2 (PSS Li-O 2 ) battery operating at room temperature. The multifunctional composed cathode consists of the traditional black TiO 2 photocatalyst and carbon cloth (b-TiO 2 /CC). The b-TiO 2 /CC harvests a full spectrum of sunlight, besides the photo-generated electrons and holes enhancing reaction kinetics during discharging and charging processes, though converting solar energy into heat to achieve self-heated replace on external. The photo-electro-thermal synergy-triggered PSS Li-O 2 battery establishes a low overpotential of 0.26 V and long durability of up to 90 cycles, which is a breakthrough for PEO-based Li-O 2 batteries operating at room temperature. A flexible PSS Li-O 2 battery is constructed and exhibits superior flexibility and mechanical stability . The mechanism of the photo-electro-thermal synergy provides a new strategy for PSS Li-O 2 batteries and advances the high-efficiency utilization of solar energy in portable devices.
