The rigid-flexible interphase was constructed by polyamide acid-polyether amine block copolymer with various ratios of rigid/flexible segments (PAE 20 , PAE 10 , PAE 5 ), and the correlation of rigid/flexible proportion with interfacial properties of M40X composites was explored via the combined method of experiments and molecular dynamic (MD) simulation. As the proportion of flexible segments increased, the PAE-CF surface exhibited improved chemical activity and uniform coverage. The interfacial simulation presented a distribution plateau of rigid backbones in the interphase of PAE 10 -CF/EP composite, corresponding to the experimentally-verified double transit-modulus platform, which indicated that the spatial homogeneity of the stable crosslinked networks facilitated the gradient interphase stiffening. The graduated interfacial structures contributed to 55.25%, 179.31% increment of simulated interfacial shear stress (ISS), and 7.96%, 19.03% enhancement in interfacial shear strength (IFSS) in comparison with those of PAE 20 -CF/EP and PAE 5 -CF/EP composites. The interphase reinforcing mechanisms were investigated by interfacial residual stress and toughness via experimental analysis and theoretical calculation. Compared with the pristine CF composite, the interfacial residual stress and interfacial toughness were improved by 26.4% and 165.6% in PAE 10 -CF/EP composite, respectively. The integration of stress transfer capacity with energy dissipation efficiency was achieved by the optimal rigid/flexible ratio, which contributed to the balance between the interfacial stiffness and toughness of M40X composites.

Elucidating the mechanisms of ion-involved interfacial reactions at the single-bond level is important for understanding interface science. Here, the reaction between pyridine ions and protons at the solid-liquid interface is studied in situ using a single-molecule conductance measurement technique. By manipulating the interfacial electrostatic potential, an ion/metal interfacial state relying on electrostatic interactions has been discovered, comprising terminal group-hydrogen-gold in specific. The reversible interfacial protonation reaction mechanism is revealed in situ at the single-bond level based on this interfacial state. Experiment results also indicate that external forces can effectively regulate this ion-involved interfacial reaction. This work provides a single-bond approach for in situ investigations of ion-involved interfacial reactions with an ion/metal interfacial state, thus promoting the development of interface science.

The interface is crucial for the mechanical properties of composite which is tightly linked to the microstructure of CF surface and resin matrix. However, the modulus mismatch between CF and resin leads to stress concentration and poor interfacial performance. This study proposes a bidirectional structural design strategy aimed at optimizing the interfacial performance of CF/epoxy composites from the perspective of interfacial construction and modulus matching. An organic-inorganic three-dimensional hybrid particle (the notation indicates a composite formed between PDI and GO through both chemical and physical interactions) was synthesized to enhance the modulus and toughness of resin, as well as the chemical bonding, mechanical entanglement and wettability with resin of CF surface. Compared to the original and single pathway (either the CF or resin), the transverse tensile strength of the bidirectionally modified composites increased by 68.4%, 31.2% and 18.0%, and the interlaminar shear strength increased by 23.6%, 8.5%, 18.6%, respectively. Furthermore, a comprehensive exploration of synergistic reinforcement mechanisms and stress dispersion patterns at the composites was conducted. This bidirectional structural design strategy provides a new avenue for the next-generation high-performance composites in the fields of aerospace, rail transit and so on.

Interface friction impedes tissue healing and stimulates interface cells to produce matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs); however, the precise mechanisms underlying matrix degradation, and the formation of fibrous scars remain unclear. This research involved the development of interface lubricating microspheres that inhibit the PI3K/AKT/mTOR signaling pathway in tenocytes. This inhibition significantly decreased MMP-13 expression and increased COL-1 production, thereby facilitating interface repair and regeneration. In vitro experiments demonstrated that interface friction activates the PI3K/AKT/mTOR/MMP-13 signaling pathway, while the use of interface lubricating microspheres reduced friction by 78 %, resulting in a threefold decrease in MMP-13 expression through pathway inhibition. Animal studies showed that the application of interface lubricating microspheres reduced friction at the tendon-bone interface, mitigating MMP-13-mediated matrix degradation and effectively reducing fibrous scar formation (as evidenced by decreased α-SMA expression), thus promoting interface healing following ACLR surgery in rats. Consequently, this study suggests that interface friction can trigger the PI3K/AKT/mTOR signaling pathway in tenocytes, leading to increased MMP-13 expression, matrix degradation, and fibrous scar formation. The use of interface lubricating microspheres can enhance interface healing by inhibiting this pathway, offering strategies for improving interface healing and minimizing fibrous scar formation. Statement of significance Interface healing plays a crucial role following tendon-bone surgeries, yet it is often hindered by challenges such as interface friction and scar formation. In this study, we propose a combined approach in which lubricating microspheres and an anti-matrix degradation drug are used to enhance interface healing. We fabricated novel lubricating microspheres that exhibit outstanding biocompatibility and degradability; these microspheres serve as lubricants for the tendon-bone interface and facilitate the delivery of doxycycline to reduce excessive matrix metalloproteinase (MMP) secretion. The experimental results demonstrated that this method could enhance tendon-bone interface healing in rats, resulting in increased bone formation and higher histological scores than those of the control group. This study represents a preliminary effort to integrate lubrication and anti-matrix degradation in interface healing, potentially offering new insights into the mechanism between interface friction and fibrous scar healing, while promoting interface healing by reducing interfacial friction.

It is an urgent issue to enhance oil recovery for unconventional reservoirs with high salinity. Focused on this topic, salt addition is a powerful tool to motivate the surfactant assembly at the water/oil interface and improve the interfacial activity. We used a cationic surfactant cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) and an anionic salt dicarboxylic acid sodium (CnDNa) to construct gemini-like surfactants at the interface and evaluated their ability to reduce the interfacial tension (IFT) between model oil (toluene and n-decane, v:v = 1:1) and water. Interestingly, the fabrication of a (CTAB) 2 /C4DNa gemini-like surfactant was hardly achieved at the fresh water/model oil interface, but accomplished at the brine/model oil interface. At a high NaCl concentration (100,000 mg L −1 ), the IFT value is reduced to 10 −3 mN m −1 order of magnitude, which is generally desired in practical applications. The control experiments displacing the surfactant type and the spacer length further confirmed the NaCl effects on the interfacial assembly.

Cu shows unique characteristics for electrochemical CO 2 reduction reaction (CO 2 RR) to hydrocarbons and oxygenates due to the moderate adsorption energy of the key intermediate *CO. However, it remains a challenge to selectively control CO 2 RR towards C 1 (e.g., CH 4 ) or C 2+ (e.g., C 2 H 4 and C 2 H 5 OH) through simple interface engineering. Herein, a series of inverse catalysts, composed of CeO 2 nanoparticles over Cu substrate (Cu-CeO 2 -x), are subtly designed to tackle the issues. It is verified CeO 2 decoration induces highly active Cu/CeO 2 interfacial sites that enhance the adsorption and conversion of CO 2 and *CO intermediates into C 2+ or CH 4 , while the Cu sites are conducive to *CO generation. With the increase of CeO 2 deposition, the C 2+ and CH 4 selectivity present a volcano-type and increasing tendency with maximum faradic efficiency of 62.6% and 51.3%, respectively. In-situ infrared spectroscopy and theoretical calculations reveal that moderate CeO 2 loading allows the Cu/CeO 2 interfacial sites to cooperate efficiently with the Cu sites to promote the coupling of *CO/*CHO intermediates, thus enhancing the C 2+ selectivity. In contrast, excessive CeO 2 loading suppresses the C─C coupling but boosts unilaterally the hydrogenation, thus promoting the CH 4 production. This work provides effective strategies to regulate the CO 2 RR selectivity by modulating metal/oxide interfaces.

The damage mechanism of carbon fiber and fiber-ceramic interface of C f /ZrC-SiC were investigated and revealed. The chemical reactions of C with ZrO 2 and SiO 2 impurities during the sintering resulted in the surface and grain etching of fiber. The ZrC-SiC ceramics diffused into interface to form a strong bonding under high temperature and press, leading to a failure of stress release and guiding the crack propagation direct across fiber. Both consequently impeded the fiber pull-out and bridging. By obvious contrast, the chemical etching of fiber was effectively inhibited utilizing PyC coating as transition layer, and the strong bonding of fiber with ceramic was relieved at the same time replaced by a relatively weak bonding. As a result, the fiber pull-out and fiber bridging were boosted with a longer length more than 50 µm, over 2 times of uncoated composite, accompanied with obvious crack branching and deflection, together resulting in a graceful mechanical feedback with 2.5 times of work of fracture and improved fracture toughness . This work not only revealed the microstructure forms and inherent mechanism on structure damage of carbon fiber, but also offered an effective method of protecting fiber and tailoring the interface bonding, thereby guiding the design of C f /ZrC-SiC with graceful mechanical performance.

Natural gas hydrates can readily form in deep-water oil production processes and pose a great threat to the oil industry. Moreover, the coexistence of hydrate and asphaltene can result in more severe challenges to subsea flow assurance. In order to study the effects of asphaltene on hydrate growth at the oil–water interface, a series of micro-experiments were conducted in a self-made reactor, where hydrates nucleated and grew on the surface of a water droplet immersed in asphaltene-containing oil. Based on the micro-observations, the shape and growth rate of the hydrate shell formed at the oil–water interface were mainly investigated and the effects of asphaltene on hydrate growth were analyzed. According to the experimental results, the shape of the water droplet and the interfacial area changed significantly after the formation of the hydrate shell when the asphaltene concentration was higher than a certain value. A mechanism related to the reduction of the interfacial tension caused by the absorption of asphaltenes on the interface was proposed for illustration. Moreover, the growth rate of the hydrate shell decreased significantly with the increasing asphaltene concentration under experimental conditions. The conclusions of this paper could provide preliminary insight how asphaltene affect hydrate growth at the oil–water interface.

The structures of proteins on the interface of oil-in-water emulsions that influence the interfacial film strength are significant to the emulsions stabilization. It is expected that the interfacial protein could be fully recovered based on the competitive displacement of low-molecular surfactant, when the recovery approach and relative parameters are optimized, so that the structural properties of interfacial proteins can be evaluated to clarify their adsorption behaviour and film forming mechanism. In the present study, an optimized and efficient approach to fully recovering interfacial myofibrillar protein (MP) was established by optimizing protein concentration, Tween-20 concentration and different accelerating treatments (agitation or freeze-thawing), for interface-induced structural changes analysis. It was found that the interfacial MP in 2.5 mg/ml protein-stabilized emulsion could be fully recovered in 96 h with 4% (v/v) Tween-20 under agitation treatment. Freeze-thawing treatment could accelerate the desorption process by which interfacial MP in the above emulsion could be fully recovered in 3 cycles with 2% or 3% (v/v) Tween-20 but might cause damage to the MP structure. Based on the established recovery approach, it was concluded that the tertiary structure of interfacial MP unfolded to expose hydrophobic residue branch for interfacial adsorption and film formation, which further caused aggregation of desorbed MP through hydrophobic interaction. While the α-helix decreased due to interface-induced denaturation and the β-sheet increased to improve protein-protein interaction on the interface. These results provided an optimized strategy to analyze interfacial protein structure.

Increasing the voltage of lithium batteries represents the most direct and effective strategy for enhancing battery capacity. However, excessively high charging voltages can result in the degradation of battery interfacial contacts and the dissolution of transition metals in the cathode, thereby limiting the cycling performance of the battery. This paper employs a fluorosulfonic acid salt electrolyte as a sacrificial agent to in situ construct a stable CEI (Cathode Electrolyte Interface) and SEI (Solid Electrolyte Interface). The resulting membrane is characterized by a uniform distribution of LiF and LiSO x , which exhibit high lithium-ion conductivity and mitigate dissolution of active materials under high voltage. This membrane effectively restricts further electrolyte consumption, allowing the remaining electrolyte to wet the interface and reduce interfacial impedance adequately. Moreover, the CEI can suppress the dissolution of transition metals from the cathode and prevent them from shuttling to the anode side. When implemented in lithium batteries, the use of the sacrificial agent enables the NCM523/Li battery (with an initial discharge capacity of 105 mAh/g) to achieve a high capacity retention of 85.7 % after 800 cycles at a 1 C rate and 30 °C.

The severe non-radiative recombination loss caused by SnO 2 /perovskite interface defects greatly hinders the further improvement of the performance and stability of flexible perovskite solar cells (PSCs). Herein, a series of halides KM (M = F, Cl, Br, I) were inserted as interface layers to modulate the SnO 2 /perovskite interface. Both experimental and theoretical calculation demonstrated that F − exhibited stronger interface coupling effect between the SnO 2 and perovskite than other halide ions (Cl − , Br − , I − ). The F − had unique effects in effectively depressing SnO 2 /perovskite interface defects ascribed to the simultaneous formation of Sn F bonds and hydrogen bonds , resulting in reduced non-radiative recombination and improved interfacial contact. In consequence, the champion KF-modified flexible and rigid PSCs delivered outstanding PCE of 18.16 % and 21.36 %, accompanied by the enhanced V OC of 1.14 V and 1.16 V, respectively. Meanwhile, the stability of flexible PSCs was significantly ameliorated after KF modification, and about 84 % of the original efficiency could be retained even after 3000 bending cycles. This work provides a facile and efficient strategy for interface modulation to achieve high-performance and stable flexible PSCs.

The stability of the emulsified oil/water mixture depends on the strength and tightness of the interface, which is closely related to the adsorption and close packing of the active components on the interface. The core task of demulsification is to change the interface properties to enhance efficient oil-water separation. In this study, a coupling model of photo field, thermo field, and electro field was constructed to focus on fully considering the particularity of the demulsification, while improving the utilization efficiency of solar energy by presetting and matching a variety of energy flows and sub-processes. Taking oil/water emulsion from the ASP flooding as an example , the oil removal rate of 82.27% can be obtained, and efficient energy modes, namely high-intensity thermo field, uniform photo field and low-intensity electro field, are established. At the same time, the results show that the photo-thermo-electro field changes the properties of the oil-water interface, such as the interfacial tension, zeta potential and modulus. The mechanism of solar demulsification is that the solar thermal effect changes the motion state of the molecules at the interface, the coupling electro effect drives the migration of charged droplets and the stretching or deformation of the polymer chain, which combined with the photo field to degrade the polymer at the interface. Solar demulsification not only enables innovation in the form of energy and promotes its sustainable development, but also provides a green process in which solar thermo, photo, and electro are synergistically combined to achieve demulsification.
