This study introduces an anode material for lithium-ion batteries, achieved by integrating tea polyphenols (TP) with the widely utilized polyacrylic acid (PAA) binder. The composite material capitalizes on the intrinsic self-healing properties of TP, enhancing the anode’s durability and adhesiveness without the need for additional organic synthesis. The incorporation of TP has been demonstrated to significantly elevate ionic conductivity and expedite lithium ion diffusion, thereby reducing interfacial resistance and decelerating the rate of capacity fade due to electrolyte decomposition and silicon particle expansion. Employing a comprehensive analytical toolkit, including Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, thermogravimetric analysis, peel strength measurements, and density functional theory calculations, we elucidated the physicochemical properties of the Si@PAA-TP anode. The anode’s electrochemical performance was systematically assessed through galvanostatic charge–discharge, cyclic voltammetry, and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, with scanning electron microscopy providing insights into postcycling mechanical property alterations. This research advances a cost-effective, high-performance adhesive strategy for silicon anodes and contributes to the development.

Highly adhesive binders are developed to prolong the cycle life of silicon anodes and accelerate their practical application. A series of poly(N-methacryloyl-3,4-dihydroxy- l -phenylalanine) (PMDOPA) binders, containing ultra-high content of catechol groups, are synthesized through radical polymerization and applied to silicon anodes. The ultra-high content of catechol groups endows the PMDOPA binder superior adhesive strength compared to the carboxyl groups of the polyacrylic acid (PAA) binder. As the molecular weight increases, the flexibility, solvent resistance and adhesive strength of the PMDOPA binders are all enhanced, which effectively alleviates the electrode pulverization during long-term cycling and prolongs the cycle life of batteries . Especially, the PMDOPA-20 binder, which possesses the highest molecular weight of 208 kDa among all the PMDOPA samples, exhibits the longest cycle life of 665 cycles at the current density of 840 mA g −1 , even though its molecular weight is lower than PAA. This work demonstrates that both the functional adhesive group and molecular weight are crucial for binder performance, which provides a valuable reference for the future development of high-performance binders.

Silicon anode suffers from rapid capacity decay because of its irreversible volume changes during charging and discharging. As one of the important components of the electrode structure, the binder plays an irreplaceable role in buffering the volume changes of the silicon anode and ensuring close contact between various components of the electrode. Traditional PVDF binder is based on weak van der Waals forces and cannot effectively buffer the stress coming from silicon volume expansion, resulting in rapid decay of silicon anode capacity. In addition, most natural polysaccharide binders with a single force face the same problem due to poor toughness. Therefore, it is extremely important to develop a binder with good force and toughness between the silicon particles. Herein, polyacrylamide (PAM) polymer chains that are premixed homogeneously with various components are cross-linked on-site on the current collector via the condensation reaction with citric acid, forming a polar three-dimensional (3D) network with improved tensile properties and adhesion for both silicon particles and current collector. The silicon anode with the cross-linked PAM binder exhibits higher reversible capacity and enhanced long-term cycling stability; the capacity remains at 1280 mA h g–1 after 600 cycles at 2.1 A g–1 and 770.9 mA h g–1 after being subjected to 700 cycles at 4.2 A g–1. It also exhibits excellent cycle stability in silicon–carbon composite materials. This study provides a cost-effective binder engineering strategy, which significantly enhances the long-term cycle performance and stability of silicon anodes, paving the way for large-scale practical applications.

The large volume expansion of a silicon anode induces serious mechanical failure and limits its applications. Owing to the intrinsic weak van der Waals force and poor toughness, it is unable to solve this issue with the current commercial poly(vinylidene difluoride) (PVDF) binder. The development of a binder with strong binding strength with silicon (Si) is urgent. Herein, a hydroxyl-rich three-dimensional (3D) network binder is synthesized by chemical cross-linking reactions between epichlorohydrin (ECH) and sodium hyaluronate (SH), which exhibits dramatically enhanced toughness and cohesive properties. The Si anode with the novel SH-ECH as the binder delivers excellent electrochemical performance, especially cycling stability. The discharge capacity could maintain 800.4 mAh g–1 after 1000 cycles at a current of 0.2 C with the average capacity decay rate per cycle of 0.015%. Our results pave a new way for the tailoring of the chemical structures of natural polymers to realize lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) with superior electrochemical performance.

Silicon (Si) is a promising anode material for next-generation lithium-ion batteries (LIBs), but the huge volume change of Si particles causes anode fracture and delamination from the current collector, thereby stifling practical implementation. Herein, a high-toughness and hierarchical stress-dissipating binder for Si anodes is prepared by the covalent and hydrogen bonding of poly(acrylic acid) (PAA) and a cross-linked polyurethane (CPU). The physicochemical dual-cross-linked CPU-PAA binder with high toughness, large tensile strength, and hierarchical stress dissipation improves the structural integrity of Si anodes and minimizes thickness swelling. Finite element analysis confirms that the CPU-PAA binder reduces and uniformizes the stress distribution within the Si anodes during cycling. As a result, the Si/CPU-PAA anode shows a high capacity retention of 82.3% after 150 cycles at a high current density of 5 A g–1. Moreover, the Si/CPU-PAA//LiNi0.5Co0.2Mn0.3O2 full cell delivers stable cycling performance, highlighting the great potential of the CPU-PAA binder in high-energy-density LIBs. This work provides insights into the design of high-strength, large-toughness, and efficient stress-dissipating binders for high-performance Si anodes.

Binders play an important role in preserving the mechanical stability of electrodes. Nevertheless, the typical binders normally are not stretchable to withstand a repeated large volume change, which are not suitable for high-loading silicon anodes. Herein, inspired by the natural parthenocissus, an elastic self-healing CA-PAA binder is designed for silicon anode to implement long-terms stable cycling. The multiple hydrogen bonds formed by in-situ cross-linking of water soluble citric acid (CA) and poly (acrylic acid) (PAA) can establish a reversible network for silicon particles. The CA molecule not only serves as the protecting buffer layer to release the inner stress and stabilize the solid electrolyte interface (SEI), but it can also connect with PAA to form a “inner flexibility and outer rigidity” spatial topology. Consequently, this self-healing binder enhanced silicon anode exhibits an excellent performance on accommodating the large volume change during cycling process. As expected, the silicon anode shows an impressive initial areal capacity of 6.5 mAh cm −2 , 78% capacity retention after 50 cycles with a high mass loading of 1.8 mg cm −2 , and an initial Coulombic efficiency of 89.5%. Meanwhile, the Si||NCM 811 full cell shows 74% capacity retention after 100 cycles with a reversible capacity of 1.7 mAh cm −2 .

Flexible interfaces between Si anodes and composite electrolytes consisting of poly(propylene carbonates) (PPCs) and garnets have been fabricated. The solid polymer electrolytes (SPEs) of PPC/garnet/LiTFSI show the conductivity of 4.2 × 10 −4 S cm −1 at room temperature . Their combination with the Si layer anodes allows great alleviation of internal stress resulting from the large volume variation during lithiation and delithiation process of Si anodes. As a result, the Si/SPE/Li cells exhibit 2520 mAh g −1 , 2260 mAh g −1 , 1902 mAh g −1 , 1342 mAh g −1 at 0.1 C, 0.2 C, 0.5 C, and 1 C, respectively. Furthermore, with such compatible and stable interfaces of Si/SPE and the LiFePO 4 cathodes in solid-state batteries , the specific capacity of 2296 mAh g −1 in terms of Si is obtained, which remains 82.6% after 100 cycles at room temperature and 0.1 C. The results here indicate that constructing of flexible interfaces between Si anodes and SPEs is a promising strategy to develop high performance solid-state batteries .

Silicon (Si) anodes display high specific capacity but mostly suffer from poor cycling ability owing to their dramatic volume expansion during the discharge/charge process. An effort was devoted to developing new polymeric binders that could effectively mitigate the capacity fading of Si anodes. Herein, aqueous binders of chitosan-g-poly(acrylic acid) copolymer (CS–PAA) and its sodium salt (CS–PAANa) have been synthesized and applied as the functional binders for the stabilization of Si anodes in lithium-ion batteries. The structure and properties of Si anodes based on CS–PAA and CS–PAANa were comparatively characterized by using poly(vinylidene fluoride), chitosan, and poly(acrylic acid) as reference binders. Unlike conventional 1D structural binders, the CS–PAA and CS–PAANa form a cross-linked (3D) network during curing, which maintains mechanical integrity to mitigate Si nanoparticle pulverization effectively. Moreover, the abundant polar groups including carboxylic acid (−COOH) and carboxylate (−COO–) in the two binders could react with both Si nanoparticles and copper (Cu) current collector to offer robust adhesion, significantly improving electrode integrity after the repeated delithiation/lithiation cycles. Benefitting from the structural advantages, the Si/CS–PAA and Si/CS–PAANa electrodes deliver stable cycling performances of 1243 and 1608 mA h/g at 420 mA/g after 100 cycles.

The optimization of polymeric binders has been considered as an effective strategy to accommodate the huge volume change of Si anodes during lithiation and delithiation processes. In this work, three dimensional polymeric binders (CMC/TU) with multiple hydrogen bonds were designed and fabricated through the copolymerization reaction between carboxymethylcellulose sodium (CMC) and thiourea (TU), which possess bifunctional effects on Cu current collectors and Si active materials. On the one hand, similar to the interaction mechanism at rubber-metal boundary in tire industry, the formation of dendritic Cu x S layers results in physical interlocked forces to strengthen the binding forces of CMC/TU binders with Cu current collectors. On the other hand, the generation of hydrogen bonds between polymeric binders and Si oxide layers can enhance the binding forces of CMC/TU binders with Si active materials and stabilize the electrode/electrolyte interface. When served as binders to Si microparticles (1–5 μm), they exhibited initial coulomb efficiency of 89.9% and reached 1059 mAh g −1 after 150 cycles, which results from the bifunctional roles of CMC/TU binders for maintaining electrode integrity during the discharge and charge processes. The developed synthetic method provides a strategy to enhance the electrochemical properties of Si-based materials, and can be widely applied to other electrode materials.

A modified natural polysaccharide (carboxymethylated gellan gum) is investigated as a water-soluble high-performance binder for silicon anodes in lithium-ion batteries to improve poor cycle life and fast capacity fade of silicon anodes due to dramatic volume expansion during lithiation/delithiation process. The numberof carboxyl and acetyl groups distributed homogeneously in the modified polysaccharide polymer chain can form strong hydrogen bonds with the surface of Si particle and copper current collector, thus effectively restricting the volume change of silicon and maintaining electronic integrity of Si electrodes during repeated charge/discharge cycles. As a result, Si anodes with carboxymethylated natural polysaccharide polymer present high capacity performance, excellent rate capability, and stable cycling.

Large volume variation in silicon anode upon (de)lithiation generally induces binding failure of binders, exaggerating further side reactions between the newly exposed surface of silicon particles and electrolyte. Herein, we greatly increase the binder binding power by lengthening the side chain of polyacrylamide (PAM) using condensation reaction with soy protein isolate (SPI) to suppress the silicon anode volume changes. This dramatically improved viscosity can deal with binding failure problems well. On this basis, stable ionic bonds are introduced into the binder by leveraging calcium ions to enhance mechanical properties . The multi-bonded binder contained stable covalent bonds , ionic bonds, and hydrogen bonds that can achieve significantly restrain the volume changes of silicon, dramatically improving the electrochemical performance , especially the cycling stability.

We introduce a unique self-adaptive and dual-conductive binding network composed of (1) adjustable adhesion molecule of ion-conductive cyclodextrin (CD) and (2) rigid network consisting of electron-conductive polypyrrole (PPy) and ion-conductive lithium carboxymethyl cellulose (LCMC) for electrode formation. Such a binding network of CD@PPy:LCMC is constructed by association of LCMC with inclusion complex of CD@PPy after extending PPy by polymerization of pyrrole which is released from pyrrole micelles with the CD@PPy as the wall material. CD molecules can rotate around and slide along the PPy chain in the CD@PPy:LCMC, dispersing stress arising from volume expansion of Si after lithiation. The abundant carboxyl groups in CMC and hydroxyl groups in glucopyranose unit of CD and CMC provide high absorption capability to fix Si nano-particles. The Si anode with the CD@PPy:LCMC presents small polarization, high capacity, and excellent cycleability. The initial capacity as high as 3881 mAh g −1 , the rate capacity of 1208 mAh g −1 at 6 C (1 C=4200 mAh g −1 ), and the excellent capacity retention of 2200 mAh g −1 after 200 deep charge-discharge cycles with cyclic decay of 0.12 % per cycle have been achieved.
