Current technologies for removal of Cr(VI) are generally fit for acidic wastewater. In this study, a new ferrite process for removal and recycling of Cr(VI) from alkaline wastewater to produce the valuable chromium ferrite has been developed. The results show that this new ferrite method is a one-step process which can be divided into two successive reactions including Cr(VI) reduction to form coprecipitation (Cr 0.25 Fe 0.75 (OH) 3 ) and subsequently magnetic conversion of Cr 0.25 Fe 0.75 (OH) 3 induced by Fe 2+ under the same alkaline condition. The total Fe/Cr mole ratio of 5:1 is at least required for the chromium ferrite transformation. Increasing temperature and pH can enhance the interaction of Fe 2+ with Cr 0.25 Fe 0.75 (OH) 3 and further promote the formation of chromium ferrite, while suppressing the generation of nonmagnetic by-product goethite. Almost pure chromium ferrite is formed under proposed optimum conditions (Fe/Cr = 7:1, 65 °C and pH of 9) with Cr(VI) removal ratio around 100%. The Cr(VI) remained in the filtrate can be reduced to 0.01 mg/L which is much lower than the limits concentration for surface water (≤0.05 mg/L). The chromium ferrite product whose molecular formula can be expressed as Cr 0.5-x Fe 2.5+x O 4 (where 0 ≤ x < 0.5) presents good magnetic properties and has the potential to be recycled as a useful material.

The immobilization of uranium in nuclear wastewater is of paramount importance for environmental and human health. However, there is a paucity of research on the immobilization of uranium in alkaline wastewater, particularly with regards to the application of novel electrodes. This article presents the utilization of an electrochemically polymerized polypyrrole stainless steel (PPy-SUS304) electrode for the effective electrochemical deposition and removal of uranium from alkaline wastewater containing uranium. According to the electrodeposition results, the uranium deposition efficiency of the novel electrode reached 96.82 %, with a uranium deposition rate of 0.048 mg U/(h·cm 2 ) and a charge efficiency of 0.055 mg U/C. These findings demonstrate the successful electrochemical reduction of UO 2 (CO 3 ) 3 4- in alkaline uranium-containing wastewater using the novel electrode, resulting in improved charge deposition efficiency. The electrode surface products were investigated using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS), and X-Ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS). The SEM and EDS results demonstrate the formation of a uniform PPy film on the surface of SUS304. In addition, the White light interferometer (WLI) test reveals that the PPy-SUS304 electrode exhibits increased roughness compared to the SUS304 electrode. The XPS results revealed that the electrode surface products of PPy-SUS304 were actually U compounds constituted of U(IV) oxides or hydroxides. This study provides a new perspective for the development of novel electrodes to suppress side reactions and efficiently recover uranium from alkaline uranium-containing wastewater.

Solar evaporation is a simple, cost-effective method for producing clean water that does not require complex infrastructure and fossil energy. Although there have been significant advances in hydrogel solar evaporators, their widespread applications are still hampered by challenges related to customizing the structures to optimize solar evaporation rates and managing the pollution associated with waste hydrogel evaporators. To address these issues, we construct a customizable in structure, highly efficient and degradable interfacial solar evaporator using three-dimensional (3D) printing technique. The complex 3D microstructures can significantly enhance sunlight absorption through multiple surface reflections and anti-reflection effects, which can achieve customized evaporation performance. The optimized tree-shaped hydrogel evaporators can achieve a high evaporation rate of 2.41 kg m –2 h −1 under 1 sun. Importantly, the hydrogel evaporators exhibit degradation properties in alkaline liquids. These components can be integrated into the environment, reducing their impact on the environment and achieving sustainable utilization, offering a promising solution for alkaline wastewater purification and demonstrating the potential of environmental-friendly solar evaporator technology.

Water-induced electricity harvesting has gained much significance for energy sustainability. Bio-based hydrovoltaic materials increase the attractiveness of this strategy. Although promising, it faces a challenge due to its reliance on fresh water and its inherently low power output. Herein, the energy from alkalinity-gradient power generation demonstrated the feasibility of reuse of alkaline wastewater to develop an all-wood-based water-induced electric generator (WEG) based on ion concentration gradients. The intermittent water droplets bring about uneven distribution of electrolyte and endow delignified wood with the difference of ion concentration along aligned cellulose nanochannels, thus supplying electrical power. The practice of using alkali reservoirs, including industrial wastewater, further contributes to electricity generation. The cubic WEG with a side length of 2 cm can produce an ultrahigh open-circuit voltage of about 1.1 V and a short-circuit current of up to 320 μA. A power output of 6.75 μW cm–2 is correspondingly realized. Series-connected WEGs can be used as an energy source for commercial electronics and self-powered systems. Our design provides a double value proposition, allowing for sustainable energy generation and wastewater reuse.

Industrial wastewater containing heavy metal ions can cover the full pH range according to the manufacturing process. Alkaline wastewater treatment is still a great challenge because Cr 6+ therein has a more negative reduction potential (Cr 2 O 7 2− + 14H + + 6e − = 2Cr 3+ + 7H 2 O (E Cr 6+ (Cr2O7 2− /Cr 3+ ) = E θ − RT nF ln [ OH ] − ) than in acid solution, in which it can be easily reduced by numerous reagents. In this study, weakly alkaline Cr 6+ solution has been used to simulate weakly alkaline industrial wastewater, and a reagent capable of excellent reduction efficiency therein has been developed. A series of band-gap-energy-adjustable NiS-Zn x Cd 1- x S composites has been synthesized by a one-pot hydrothermal method . A more negative conduction band position for Zn x Cd 1- x S has been achieved by doping and changing the amount of Zn 2+ ions to ensure a superior photoreduction ability. All modified samples show excellent photocatalytic efficiency. For example, the reduction efficiency of 10%NiS–Zn 0.25 Cd 0.75 S sample is threefold higher than that of Zn 0.25 Cd 0.75 S and sixfold higher than that of CdS when deployed at a catalytic level for 30 min. Multiple characterization methods have been applied, and the results show that the improved efficiency can be ascribed to intimate contact between Zn 0.25 Cd 0.75 S and NiS. Photoluminescence (PL) and photocurrent measurements and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) further elucidate the catalytic mechanism and imply an enhanced charge-carrier separation efficiency between Zn 0.25 Cd 0.75 S and NiS.

The integration of environmental remediation with green hydrogen production bifunctional water electrolysis in hypersaline industrial effluents requires catalysts that simultaneously address efficiency-stability trade-offs. This study presents a self-supported P-SnCoFe-LDH/NF architecture engineered through dual-ion co-doping, demonstrating unprecedented performance in chloride-rich alkaline oilfield wastewater. The optimised catalyst achieves overpotentials of 253 mV for oxygen evolution reaction (OER) and 187 mV for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) at 10 mA cm −2 with 12-h stability, representing a 4 and 41 % performance retention improvement over conventional CoFe-LDH in aggressive media. Mechanistic studies reveal dual electronic modulation: Sn-doping induces d-band center downshifting while P-incorporation generates electron-deficient metal centers. This synergy establishes optimal adsorption–desorption equilibrium, evidenced by 21 % reduced OER charge transfer resistance and 56 % enhanced HER Volmer kinetics. The symmetric electrolyser (P-SnCoFe-LDH/NF||P-SnCoFe-LDH/NF) maintains <2 % voltage decay during continuous operation. This work presents a new paradigm for multifunctional electrocatalysis in complex aqueous matrices.
