Low-temperature catalytic hydrogenation of bio-based furfural and relevant aldehydes using cesium carbonate and hydrosiloxane

Jingxuan Long,Wenfeng Zhao,Yufei Xu,Weibo Wu,Chengjiang Fang,Hu Li,Song Yang

Selective hydrogenation of unsaturated compounds is mainly carried out by using high-pressure hydrogen in the presence of a precious or transition metal catalyst. Here, we describe a benign approach to efficiently catalyze the hydrogenation of furfural (FUR) to furfuryl alcohol (FFA) over commercially available cesium carbonate using nontoxic and cheap polymethylhydrosiloxane (PMHS) as hydrogen source. Good to excellent FFA yields (≥90%) could be obtained at 25–80 °C by appropriate control of the catalyst dosage, reaction time, and the hydride amount. FUR-to-FFA hydrogenation was clarified to follow a pseudo-first order kinetics with low apparent activation energy of 20.6 kJ mol−1. Mechanistic insights manifested that PMHS was redistributed to H3SiMe, which acted as the active silane for the hydrogenation reactions. Importantly, this catalytic system was able to selectively reduce a wide range of aromatic aldehydes to the corresponding alcohols in good yields of 81–99% at 25–80 °C in 2–6 h.

Dual-Strategy Engineering: Mg2+ Doping and In Situ Liquid Ligand Passivation for High-Performance Pure Red Perovskite LEDs

Yuwei Pu,Ruiru Liu,Mingjin Li,Xiao Wang,Zhenfu Zhao,Ziyang Hu

Mixed-halide perovskite nanocrystals (PeNCs), such as CsPbBr x I 3-x , offer tunable emission and high photoluminescence quantum yield (PLQY) for pure red perovskite light-emitting diodes (PeLEDs). However, surface defects and phase instability, worsened by long-chain ligands, reduce stability and efficiency. A dual-strategy approach is developed by combining Mg 2 ⁺ doping with in situ 1,8-octanedithiol passivation to fabricate stable, efficient CsPbBr x I 3-x PeNCs films. Mg 2 ⁺ doping induces lattice contraction, suppresses iodine vacancies, and enhances phase stability. In situ 1,8-octanedithiol treatment, using ethyl acetate as a nonpolar antisolvent, replaces insulating ligands with short-chain HS − -terminated ligands, passivating defects. These PeNC films enable pure red PeLEDs with a 635 nm emission peak, an external quantum efficiency (EQE) of 24.2%, a luminance of 14406 cd m − 2 , and a half-life of 69 min at 1000 cd m − 2 , outperforming pristine PeNCs-based devices (EQE of 3.15%, T 50 of 12 min). This in situ strategy minimizes deposition-induced defects, offering a scalable route for high-performance PeLEDs in display technologies.

High-Performance and Stable b-PBD/Perovskite Liquid Scintillators for X-ray Imaging

Yumeng Wang,Beiping Liu,Yingming Liu,Xi Chen,Xi Chen,Quan Wen,Eyu Wang,Bi Du,Han Zheng,Guo-Hua Zhong,Chunlei Yang,Ming Chen

Perovskite nanocrystals (PNCs) are emerging as promising scintillator materials owing to their high photoluminescence quantum yield (PLQY) and substantial X-ray absorption coefficient, among other superior properties. Nevertheless, their solid-state films encounter challenges such as limited environmental stability and nonuniform deposition over large areas. In contrast, liquid scintillators present advantages including superior radiation hardness, environmental stability, morphological flexibility, and cost-effective scalability, positioning them as a viable alternative. However, a significant limitation remains: PNCs demonstrate markedly reduced scintillation efficiency in solution. To address this issue, we propose an organic–inorganic hybridization strategy. The surface hybridization of metal halide perovskite CsPbX3 (X: Cl, Br, I) nanocrystals (NCs) with the organic molecule b-PBD results in a new generation of efficient and low-cost liquid scintillators. This hybrid system substantially enhances the X-ray radioluminescence quantum yield, achieving a light yield that represents an 18.59-fold increase over that of pristine CsPbBr3 solutions. The composite exhibited remarkable stability, retaining high luminescence intensity after high-dose X-ray irradiation and maintaining robust fluorescence intensity with stable emission peaks following prolonged ambient exposure. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and density-functional theory (DFT) analyses confirmed N–Pb bond formation, revealing an enhancement mechanism driven by X-ray-induced directional electron transfer from the organic molecule to PNCs. We have further demonstrated a CsPbBr3/b-PBD liquid X-ray imager showing a high spatial resolution of 4.9 lp/mm. This strategy demonstrates universal enhancement across CsPbX3 variants and lead-based PNCs (e.g., Mn: CsPbCl3, Ni: CsPbBr3), facilitating low-dose radiation detection for fundamental science and diverse imaging applications.

Ligand-Mediated, Temperature-Tuned Synthesis of CsPbBr3 Nanosheets for Ordered Superlattice Assembly

Zahir Abdalla,Chengqi Liu,Shefiu Kareem,Xiaoqian Wang,Zisheng Tang,Yong Liu

Two-dimensional (2D) colloidal CsPbBr3nanosheets (NSs) possess size-dependent optoelectronic properties; however, conventional hot-injection methods often lack precise growth control and well-ordered superlattice self-assembly. Herein, we introduce a modified ligand-assisted hot-injection strategy that promotes direct precursor–ligand interactions prior to solvent mixing, thereby enabling highly controlled nanosheet superlattice growth. By adjusting the reaction temperature from 130 to 150 °C, we obtained rectangular nanosheets with monodisperse, well-defined thicknesses of 3.35 ± 0.05 nm and 4.05 ± 0.09 nm at 130 and 140 °C, respectively, both below the 7 nm exciton Bohr diameter, consistent with strong quantum confinement. The resulting superlattices exhibited sharp, tunable photoluminescence peaks at 462, 464, and 513 nm, with time-resolved PL revealing a clear size–lifetime correlation, where smaller lateral superlattices at 130 °C showed a short decay time of 8.65 ns, intermediate growth at 140 °C yielded 15.42 ns, and larger lateral superlattices at 150 °C reached 35.49 ns. Importantly, the modified synthesis facilitated the formation of ordered superlattices that preserved their intrinsic emission properties, underscoring their structural stability and scalability. These findings establish a direct link between ligand-mediated synthesis, reaction temperature, nanosheet dimensions, and optical performance, offering a pathway to high-quality perovskite NS superlattices for advanced optoelectronic applications such as light-emitting diodes and sensors.

Colorimetric detection of uranyl ions by phosphate group-modified silver nanoparticles

Zhang Ziyuan,Chen Hongzhi,Ran Ke,Lai Jingsong,Xie Jinli,He Zhiyu

this study aimed to optimize the reaction conditions, specifically pH and temperature, for the phosphate functionalization of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs). An orthogonal array experimental design was employed to systematically investigate the influence of these parameters on the modification process. Each batch of phosphate-modified AgNPs was subsequently assessed for its performance in detecting UO 2 2+ ions. The results indicated that modification with disodium hydrogen phosphate at pH 9 and 60 °C provided the most effective functionalization, yielding optimal UO 2 2+ sensing capability. Following modification, the average particle size of AgNPs increased from 5 to 10 nm to 10–12 nm, accompanied by increased uniformity and colloidal stability. Using these functionalized AgNPs, a rapid colorimetric method for UO 2 2+ detection in nuclear industry applications was developed. Selectivity tests against various metal ions confirmed the nanosensor's high specificity for UO 2 2+ . Upon introduction of UO 2 2+ , aggregates with the structure “UO 2 2+ –phosphate–AgNPs” formed in the colloidal system, inducing a detectable shift in the localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) absorption peak and producing a clear colorimetric response. The sensor exhibited a linear detection range from 5 × 10 −7  M to 3.0 × 10 −6  M, with a limit of detection (LOD) of 5 × 10 −7  M and a correlation coefficient (R 2 ) of 0.97. Application of the sensor to simulated nuclear wastewater demonstrated distinct and reliable colorimetric changes. Overall, this work presents a cost-effective and efficient approach for the selective detection of UO 2 2+ , offering potential utility for monitoring uranium in nuclear industry settings

Stable perovskite quantum dots encapsulated with polymethyl methacrylate microspheres used in 3D printing and white light emitting diodes

Shuhua Tu,Xinli Lou,Jie Feng

Perovskite quantum dots (PQDs) have excellent optoelectronic properties such as high quantum yield, narrow emission spectrum, and tunable wavelength. They are widely used in display, LED devices, photovoltaics and photo-detection, etc. However, due to the instability of PQDs, they are easily decomposed by humidity or water, which greatly hinders the practical application. To solve this issue, CsPbX3 (X: Cl-, Br-, I-) PQDs encapsulated by polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) microspheres were prepared by the swelling-shrinkage method. The CsPbBr3 PQDs@PMMA composite microspheres maintain high luminescence intensity and photoluminescence quantum yield after 30 d in water. The fluorescence lifetime of CsPbBr3 PQDs@PMMA can reach 31.36 ns and the quantum efficiency reached 55.67%. CsPbX3 PQDs@PMMA microspheres with different colors can be obtained by changing the molar ratio of halogens. The stability of CsPbBr3 PQDs@PMMA microspheres in air and water were investigated in details. The red, blue and green powders are encapsulated into LED devices with color coordinates of (0.3450, 0.3624), which is close to the ideal white light. The fluorescent powder can also be used in 3D printing fields.

Interfacial ferroelectricity unlocks stable formamidinium-based perovskites

Wang Yong,Han Wenbin,Wang Xingtao,Li Biao,Wen Yehui,Zhang Tianchi,Kan Miao,Zhao Dongming,Wang Yu,Ning Weihua,Yu Xuegong,Yang Deren

Pure iodide formamidinium (FA) based-perovskite has emerged as highly promising candidates for perovskite photovoltaics, but it remains challenging to achieve long-term phase-stabilized FA-based perovskites. Herein, we present a physics-driven strategy of interfacial ferroelectricity, achieved by the integration of ferroelectric CsMnBr 3 nanocrystals (NCs) into FA-based perovskites. The ferroelectric field generated by these NCs promotes FA + cation ordering, modulates Pb–I framework, and enhances the structural regulation of the perovskite lattice. This synergistically increases the kinetic barrier for the undesired Pb-I octahedral transformation and raises the energy barrier for ion migration. The resulting perovskite materials exhibit high structure stability, enabling perovskite solar cell (PSC) minimodule to retain 99% of its initial efficiency after 1000 hours’ stability testing under 85% relative humidity at 85 °C. Owing to the improvement at the interface, the PSCs yield an efficiency of 26.62% (certified 26.40%), and the minimodules reach 24.67% (certified 23.23%). This work presents an effective approach to achieving high-performance, long-term stable perovskite optoelectronic devices through interfacial ferroelectric engineering.

Doping Strategy Enabling CsPbBrI2 Perovskite Quantum Dot-Photoresist Compatible Blending with High Stability for Ultra-Simplified Photolithography

Bin Wang,Mulin Li,Junyi You,Fengyi Zhang,Rongqiu Lv,Weiwei Wang,Wenbin Zhou,Jun Chen,Haibo Zeng

Incorporating perovskite quantum dots (PQDs) into photoresist (PR) and utilizing mature photolithography processes is an optimal strategies for achieving patterning, perfectly aligning with the requirements for large-scale manufacturing. Consequently, enhancing the intrinsic stability of the red-emitting CsPbBrI 2 QDs is paramount to enable their direct mixing with PR for subsequent lithographic processing. Herein, a B-site-doped CsPbBrI 2 QD is designed by introducing Sr 2 ⁺. This doping enhances the lattice stability and partially repairs surface defects. The Sr-doped CsPbBrI 2 QDs solution maintains stability for 30 days, retaining 93.7% of its initial photoluminescence (PL) intensity with a PL peak barely shift, while the films show enhanced thermal tolerance. Owing to the high stability, the Sr-doped CsPbBrI 2 QDs are mixed with commercial PR, and the blend maintained a photoluminescence quantum yield (PLQY) of 61%. Photolithographic patterned films achieve the minimum feature size of 88.39 µm with better uniformity and luminescence intensity. Encapsulated within the PR matrix, the QD-PR films confer exceptional water stability, retaining strong luminescence even after 48 h immersion, and resistance to polar solvents. Sr-doped CsPbBrI 2 QDs and the commercial PR synergistically overcome compatibility barriers, facilitating simple and efficient photolithographic patterning.

Achieving Near-Unity Photoluminescence Quantum Yield in Lead-Free Cerium (III) Halides Cs3CeX6 (X = Cl, Br, I) for Multifunctional Applications

Lin Shi,Junchun Li,Zengce Liu,Ping Chen,Yang Jiang

Rare-earth metal halides have emerged as a compelling class of luminescent materials, offering an environmentally benign alternative to toxic lead-based halides. This work reports the successful synthesis of Cs 3 CeX 6 (X = Cl, Br, I) with tunable emission and excellent photoluminescence quantum yield (PLQY) of Cs 3 CeCl 6 . Through controlled halogen substitution in the Cs 3 CeX 6 (X = Cl, Br, I) system, composition-dependent emission redshift (Cl→Br→I) is observed. Among them, Cs 3 CeCl 6 achieves a photoluminescence quantum yield (PLQY) of 99.89%, significantly surpassing the 92.57% PLQY of Cs 3 CeBr 6 and the 7.53% PLQY of Cs 3 CeI 6 , meanwhile surpassing that of most previously reported lead-free metal halides, highlighting its exceptional potential for efficient luminescent applications. Thermal stability analysis reveals that Cs 3 CeCl 6 maintains remarkable emission efficiency at elevated temperatures, retaining > 85% of its room-temperature luminescence intensity at 438 K, compared to only 60% for Cs 3 CeBr 6 and a mere 10% for Cs 3 CeI 6 . The exceptional thermal robustness originates from their characteristically high activation energies for thermal quenching, which effectively suppress non-radiative relaxation pathways. White light-emitting diodes (LEDs) based on Cs 3 CeI 6 exhibit a remarkable color rendering index (R a ) of 95.1, in contrast to those based on Cs 3 CeCl 6 (R a = 77.6) and Cs 3 CeBr 6 (R a = 79.6); all WLEDs based on Cs 3 CeX 6 (X = Cl, Br, I) demonstrate excellent atmospheric stability. With near-unity PLQY and remarkable thermal stability of Cs 3 CeCl 6 , coupled with the outstanding white LEDs performance of Cs 3 CeI 6 , Cs 3 CeX 6 (X = Cl, Br, I) compounds emerge as promising candidates for next-generation environmentally friendly optoelectronic applications, particularly in advanced display technologies and solid-state lighting systems. This work contributes to the advancement of eco-friendly emitters with both high efficiency and practical utility in next-generation optical technologies.

NIR-Triggered Upconversion-Perovskite Heterostructures for Non-Genetic, Implant-Free Optoelectronic Neuromodulation

Luyue Jiang,Chenguang Ma,Yiping Zhao,Jiazhi Li,Gen Li,Shuang Jin,Haoyang Su,Ye Tian,Yingkang Yang,Yunfu Luo,Lei Huang,Peijie Chen,Yiming Gao,Yi Wei,Yike Xiang,Lunming Qin,Kaihuan Zhang,Yifei Ye,Pengyi Tang,Liuyang Sun

Optoelectronic neuromodulation has transformed neuroscience research and holds great promise for treating neurological disorders. However, conventional optoelectronic methods rely on ultraviolet/visible light, which poorly penetrates tissue and typically necessitates surgically implanted optical fibers for deep-brain stimulation. Here, a heterostructure is presented that integrates near-infrared (NIR)-excitable upconversion nanoparticles (UCNPs) and broadband-absorbing CsPbBr 3 perovskite quantum dots (QDs). This nanostructure converts deeply penetrating 980 nm NIR light into localized electrical stimuli, enabling immediate and precise modulation of neuronal activity without implants. In vitro, NIR illumination of this heterostructure reliably increases the firing rate of wild-type dopaminergic (DA) neurons in acute brain slices. Importantly, in vivo, transcranial NIR stimulation of the heterostructure in the secondary motor cortex (M2) and ventral tegmental area (VTA) modulates neuronal activity, triggers turning behavior, and promotes dopamine release. Moreover, it exhibits negligible neuroinflammation and structural stability in brain tissue over at least four weeks. By integrating a stable heterostructure for efficient NIR-driven photocurrent generation, the method offers a non-genetic, minimally invasive platform for precise neuromodulation in wild-type animals.

Stabilized Lead-Free Copper-Based Perovskite Composite with Enhanced Peroxidase-Like Activity and Fluorescence: Synthesis and Applications

Yexin Zu,Yongzhen Qiu,Guihua Huang,Jian Wang,Cuiying Lin,Bin Qiu,Zhenyu Lin,Fang Luo

Perovskite quantum dots (PQDs) are increasingly utilized in various sensing applications due to their high photoluminescence quantum yield, tunable full-wavelength visible spectrum, and straightforward synthesis. However, the environmental and health concerns associated with lead-based perovskites have prompted a search for less toxic alternatives. Copper-based perovskites have shown promise as lead-free substitutes, yet their stability under polar solvents remains a challenge. This study introduces the encapsulation of copper-based perovskite nanocrystals (Cu:CsBr NCs) using hydroxypropyl-β-cyclodextrin (HP-β-CD), leveraging the cyclodextrin’s hydrophobic central cavity and hydrophilic outer surface for enhanced aqueous solubility and stability. The Cu:CsBr@HP-β-CD composite was synthesized in a one-step procedure and exhibited exceptional stability in both aqueous dispersion and storage conditions. Specifically, this composite retained 98.94% of its initial fluorescence intensity following 6 h of dispersion in an aqueous solution and maintained 99.70% of its initial fluorescence intensity after 72 days of sealed storage. Additionally, the peroxidase-like activity and fluorescent properties of the composite were investigated. The results demonstrate that HP-β-CD encapsulation significantly improves the stability and solubility of copper-based perovskites without compromising their optical properties. This approach offers a promising strategy for the development of stable, functional nanomaterials with enhanced peroxidase-like activity and fluorescence, opening new avenues for applications in catalysis and sensing. The successful encapsulation of lead-free copper-based perovskite nanocrystals using HP-β-CD addresses the toxicity concerns while maintaining the performance integrity of PQDs, advancing the field toward safer and more sustainable sensing technologies.

Multimodal Luminescence in an Excellent Stable Single-Host Nanocrystal by Leveraging Self-Trapped States and Shallow Defect Levels for Advanced Anticounterfeiting and Encryption

Gang Yang,Boxiang Sun,Gencai Pan,Pengchao Shen,Bingyin Kong,Yongsheng Zhu

Integrating enough luminescent modes into a single-host nanomaterial with high stability is crucial for advanced anticounterfeiting and information encryption technologies, but it remains a challenge. Herein, Mn2+-doped Cs2NaYbCl6 double perovskite nanocrystals (NCs) have been successfully synthesized by a modified hot-injection method and exhibited extraordinary multimodal luminescence. Under different stimuli, the NCs demonstrate diverse optical responses, including dual-color downshifting luminescence under ultraviolet (UV) light and X-ray excitation, persistent luminescence (PersL), and temperature-dependent multicolor luminescence. These processes can be completed in single-host NCs due to the harmonious coordination of self-trapped exciton states (STEs), 4G and 4D energy levels of Mn2+ ions, and inherent shallow defects of the host. Moreover, the observed PersL originates from shallow defects induced by Mn2+ occupying Yb3+ sites and intrinsic chlorine vacancies, which create efficient trap states for energy storage and release. Beyond its multifaceted luminescence, the developed NCs also showcase exceptional environmental stability, and they can maintain good optical properties even after being stored in the air for more than half a year. Furthermore, the high-level anticounterfeiting and encryption based on the NCs have been implemented, showing that this material is a highly promising candidate for commercial security applications.
