Robust and UV-resistant multifunctional surface for self-cleaning, navigated oil absorption and oil/water separation

Congcong Li,Huixia Feng,Guannan Ju,Baiyi Chen,Baomei Huang

Traditional self-cleaning surfaces are always limited to defects of poor robustness, complex preparation process and single function. In order to address these problems, we have constructed a versatile self-cleaning superhydrophobic surface with reliable robustness, photodegradation , ease of manufacturing and magnetic navigation. This function integrated surface is conveniently fabricated by spraying a fluorosilane modified TiO 2 /Fe 3 O 4 nanoparticles suspension onto an adhesive coated substrate, which was made by directly spraying the adhesive onto both soft and hard substrates to improve the robustness. During the volatilization of the ethanol-based suspension, due to the superior compatibility between the solvent and the adhesive, the functional nanoparticles are embedded in the adhesive layer and are firmly bound to it. This superhydrophobic surface shows significant robustness to damage tests and remain self-cleaning property even immersed in oil. By using this surface in oil-water separation, it indicates excellent separation efficiency for various oi-water mixtures. Meanwhile, the superhydrophobic surface shows excellent potential applications as a function integrated oil-water separation device contributed by the photodegradation property of TiO 2 nanoparticles and magnetic navigation property from Fe 3 O 4 nanoparticles.

Ultrasound- and Magnet-Enhanced Blood-Brain Barrier Transport for Self-Augmented Piezo-Fenton Glioblastoma Therapy

Meng Yuan,Wanting Zhang,Yuchu He,Xuwu Zhang,Xiyun Yan,Jinhui Zhang,Hengrui Liu,Liang Dai,Wenkang Tu,Weili Xue,Dawei Gao

Glioblastoma (GBM) remains the most aggressive primary brain tumor, with therapeutic efficacy constrained by the blood-brain barrier (BBB) that restricts targeted drug delivery. Although certain therapeutics successfully traverse the BBB, elevated interstitial pressure within tumors continues to compromise intratumoral penetration. To enhance intratumoral delivery of GBM, a dual-responsive nanodrug is constructed by incorporating piezoelectric BaTiO 3 (BTO) nanoparticles with magnetic Fe 3 O 4 . Ultrasound induces a temporary opening of the BBB, facilitating subsequent targeted delivery of the nanodrug to the GBM site under magnetic guidance. Under ultrasound stimulation, the nanoparticles then conduct a piezocatalytic water splitting within tumor interstitium, reducing fluid pressure and enabling drug penetration into the tumor core region. After deeply penetrating into the tumor, the nanodrugs generate electrons through piezocatalysis and then reduce Fe 3+ to Fe 2+ . The sustainable generated Fe 2+ initiates a piezo-Fenton coupled catalytic system that produces abundant reactive oxygen species (ROS) for oxidative cell stress. This study develops a 3-step strategy for ultrasound-/magnet- GBM navigation and penetration, optimizing drug delivery mode in GBM therapy. Moreover, the on-site piezo-Fenton coupled catalysis achieves continuous ROS regeneration and iron species recycling, thereby effectively eradicating GBM.

Fully integrated wearable control system for micro/nanorobot navigation

Zhanxiang Zhang,Lin Wang,Qijiang Feng,Shimin Yu,Fengtong Ji,Tianhao Sun,He Zhang,Yanhe Zhu,Hao Chang,Tianlong Li,Jie Zhao

Micro/nano robots have exhibited excellent application potential in the biomedical field, such as drug delivery, minimally invasive surgery, and bio-sensing. Furthermore, in order to achieve practical application, it is essential for swimming micro/nano robots to navigate towards specific targets or adjust their speed and morphology in complete environments. The navigation of swimming micro/nano robots with temporal and spatial precision is critical for fulfilling the demand of applications. Here, we introduced a fully integrated wearable control system for micro/nano robots navigation and manipulation, which is composed of a multifunctional sensor array, an artificial intelligence planner, and a magnetic field generator. The sensor array could perceive the real-time changes in gestures, wrist rotation, and acoustic signals. Artificial intelligence planner based on machine learning offers adaptive path planning in response to dynamically changing signals to generate magnetic fields for the on-demand manipulation of micro/nano robots. Such a novel, feasible control strategy was validated in the biological experiment in which cancer cells were targeted killed by photothermal therapy using micro/nano robots and integrated control platform. This wearable control system could play a crucial role in future intelligent medical applications and could be easily reconfigured toward other medical robots control.

Magnetic-navigable silk fibroin microneedles for oral drug delivery: Ensuring long-lasting helicobacter pylori eradication and rapid hemostasis in the stomach

Haoyu Qiu,Lisha Gong,Paul Slezak,Shixiong He,Fei Lu,Kun Yu,Jing Xie,Zhen Geng,Enling Hu,Zhihang Zhou,Guangqian Lan,Ruiqi Xie

The Helicobacter pylori infection in the stomach is the key reason for gastric mucosal bleeding. Eliminating gastric Helicobacter pylori by oral treatment remains difficult due to the presence of the gastric mucosal layer, which acts as a physical barrier to drugs via oral administration. In this study, a magnetic-navigable microneedle drug delivery platform (MNs D) for oral administration, featuring differential dual-mode drug release rate, was designed to fulfil rapid gastric hemostasis and overcome the gastric barriers for long-lasting Helicobacter pylori inhibition in stomach. MNs-D was created by rationally loading the carrier substrate, which was composed of silk fibroin with variable solubility, with antibiotics and hemostats. In vitro experiments showed MNs-D may sustainably eradicate Helicobacter pylori in stimulated gastric juices with long-lasting drug release (79 % in 24 h) and quickly establish hemostasis with instant drug release (92 % within 60 s). Most importantly, in vivo studies demonstrated MNs-D overcame the unsettling gastric mucosal barrier in traditional therapies of oral administration by insertion into the GML under magnetic navigation, resulting in sustained antibiotic release for long-lasting Helicobacter pylori eradiation (99 %). For differential dual-mode medication release against gastric Helicobacter pylori infections, this study may have firstly examined the effects of magnetic navigated microneedles administered orally.

Modular Micromotor Fabrication with Self-Focusing Lithography

Qingxin Guo,Binglin Zeng,Yingnan Cao,Xiaofeng Li,Jingyuan Chen,Wei Wang,Jinyao Tang

Synthetic Janus micro/nanomotors can efficiently convert ambient energy into asymmetrical self-propulsive force, overcoming random thermal fluctuations and enabling autonomous migration. Further modifications to the motors can equip them with different functional modules to meet different needs. However, developing a versatile and high-yield fabrication method for multifunctional Janus micromotors remains challenging. In this study, a modular fabrication approach for micromotors with a particle-tip structure based on the self-focusing lithography induced by an array of TiO 2 microspheres is presented. By adjusting the tip composition or loading, precise programming of motor functionality is achieved, allowing for various capabilities such as photoredox reaction-induced propulsion, fluorescent imaging, electric and magnetic navigation. Furthermore, the flexibility of this fabrication method by selectively loading materials onto two tips is demonstrated to achieve multifunctionality within a micromotor unit. This study proposes a straightforward and versatile approach for modular functional micromotors.

Endoscopy-assisted magnetic navigation of biohybrid soft microrobots with rapid endoluminal delivery and imaging

Ben Wang,Kai Fung Chan,Ke Yuan,Qianqian Wang,Xianfeng Xia,Lidong Yang,Ho Ko,Yi-Xiang J. Wang,Joseph Jao Yiu Sung,Philip Wai Yan Chiu,Li Zhang

High-precision delivery of microrobots at the whole-body scale is of considerable importance for efforts toward targeted therapeutic intervention. However, vision-based control of microrobots, to deep and narrow spaces inside the body, remains a challenge. Here, we report a soft and resilient magnetic cell microrobot with high biocompatibility that can interface with the human body and adapt to the complex surroundings while navigating inside the body. We achieve time-efficient delivery of soft microrobots using an integrated platform called endoscopy-assisted magnetic actuation with dual imaging system (EMADIS). EMADIS enables rapid deployment across multiple organ/tissue barriers at the whole-body scale and high-precision delivery of soft and biohybrid microrobots in real time to tiny regions with depth up to meter scale through natural orifice, which are commonly inaccessible and even invisible by conventional endoscope and medical robots. The precise delivery of magnetic stem cell spheroid microrobots (MSCSMs) by the EMADIS transesophageal into the bile duct with a total distance of about 100 centimeters can be completed within 8 minutes. The integration strategy offers a full clinical imaging technique–based therapeutic/intervention system, which broadens the accessibility of hitherto hard-to-access regions, by means of soft microrobots.

Water-Stable Magnetic Lipiodol Micro-Droplets as a Miniaturized Robotic Tool for Drug Delivery

En Ren,Jing Hu,Ziyang Mei,Lin Lin,Qian Zhang,Pan He,Junqing Wang,Tao Sheng,Hu Chen,Hongwei Cheng,Tiantian Xu,Shiyao Pang,Yang Zhang,Qixuan Dai,Xing Gao,Hui Liu,Hongjun Li,Yang Zhao,Zhen Gu,Xiaohui Yan,Gang Liu

Magnetic microrobots, designed to navigate the complex environments of the human body, show promise for minimally invasive diagnosis and treatment. However, their clinical adoption faces hurdles such as biocompatibility, precise control, and intelligent tracking. Here a novel formulation (referred to water-stable magnetic lipiodol micro-droplets, MLMD), integrating clinically approved lipiodol, gelatin, and superparamagnetic iron oxide nanoparticles (SPION) with a fundamental understanding of the structure-property relationships is presented. This formulation demonstrates multiple improved properties including flowability, shape adaptability, efficient drug loading, and compatibility with digital subtraction angiography (DSA) imaging in both in vitro and in vivo experiments. This enables the MLMD as a versatile tool for image-guided therapy, supported by a close-looped magnetic navigation system featuring artificial intelligence (AI)-driven visual feedback for autonomous control. The system effectively performs navigational tasks, including pinpointing specific locations of MLMD, recognizing and avoiding obstacles, mapping and following predetermined paths, and utilizing magnetic fields for precise motion planning to achieve visual drug delivery. The MLMD combines magnetic actuation with an AI-directed close-looped navigation, offering a transformative platform for targeted therapeutic delivery.
