Stone coal, a kind of important vanadium-bearing resources in China, accounts for about 87% of the domestic reserves of vanadium. But the currently developed techniques to extract vanadium from stone coal are all confronted with environmental problems. For example, large quantities of caustic or greenhouse gases discharged in the oxidizing roast process, enormous consumptions of acid or alkali in the leaching step and massive tailings containing toxic V 5+ ions. With a view to solve those problems, an innovative process for pre-concentration of vanadium from stone coal was designed and confirmed on a laboratory scale. The distinct features of this design are as follows. Firstly, the environment-friendly Fe 2 O 3 is selected as a capturer of vanadium. Secondly, the natural reducing property of stone coal is utilized to promote the formation of magnetic V-rich phase, Fe 2 VO 4 . Thirdly, a high-grade vanadium concentrate is obtained by magnetic separation method. The practicability of this design was confirmed using industrial stone coal on a laboratory scale. When 10 mass% Fe 2 O 3 relative to stone coal was added and roasted at 1200 °C for 3 h, a high-grade concentrate containing vanadium higher than 14 mass% was obtained, and more than 91% of the total vanadium in stone coal was recovered.

Red mud (RM) and phosphogypsum (PG) are both large-scale industrial solid wastes, which cause waste of resources reserved in them and pose a huge threat to the environment if not treated appropriately. Guide by the concept of “waste control by waste”, the individual and cooperated effect of PG and sodium sulfate (Na 2 SO 4 ) on iron recovering from RM through reductive roasting-magnetic separation process was comparably investigated. Systematical factorial tests verified the advantage of binary additive. An iron concentrate with iron grade and recovery of 89.02 % and 87.46 % was obtained under the optimized conditions. Mechanistic studies demonstrated that iron oxides were converted to metallic iron through reductive roasting, along with which PG was beneficial for the releasing of iron from complex iron-hosting minerals to a certain extent while binary additive was even more efficient for the reducing, decomposing and grain growing processes. This work realizes the simultaneous utilization of both waste resources.

The storage of solid waste in Bayan Obo has resulted in significant resource wastage and environmental concerns. In this study, an efficient process was developed to recover iron and rare earth elements (REEs) from this waste by processes of hydrogen-based mineral phase transformation (HMPT), magnetic separation, and flotation. Under optimal HMPT conditions (525 °C, 12.5 min, and 30% H 2 concentration), an iron concentrate with a TFe grade of 64.09% and a recovery of 95.33% was obtained. The magnetic properties of the solid waste were greatly enhanced by HMPT, allowing the effective magnetic separation of iron minerals. Further optimization of the flotation process resulted in a REEs concentrate with a rare earth oxide (REO) grade of 65%–70% and a REEs recovery of 60%–65%. Hematite was reduced to magnetite during HMPT, and bastnaesite was decomposed to REEs oxides and fluorides, and the particle structure was significantly destroyed. However, changes in monazite, fluorite, and barite were minimal.

In this study, a modification of oil assisted flotation processes of quartz particles has been proposed, which is based on introduction of miscible Dodecylamine (DDA)-Kerosene as collector with DDA cationic surfactant coated on kerosene to the hydrophilic quartz particles in the pulp. The property of miscible DDA–Kerosene emulsion was investigated. Due to the adsorption of DDA at kerosene/water interface, a smaller and uniform kerosene emulsion formed. Addition of cationic surfactant to the kerosene emulsion changed the zeta potential value from negative to positive, which resulted in enhancing the adhesion of the oil droplets to negatively charged quartz. The results showed that agglomeration and flotation process can be realized simultaneously with DDA–Kerosene. The agglomeration of fine quartz minerals in the presence of miscible DDA–Kerosene led to the formation of very large compact agglomerates resulting in increasing hydrophobicity of the particles and inducing a higher probability of collision and adhesion to air bubble. Experimental data indicated that miscible DDA–Kerosene had better selectivity and stronger collectability to quartz than DDA–HCl, which can be used as an efficient collector in the reverse flotation of magnetic separation concentrate of TISCO. At the same DDA dosage (60 g/t), separation efficiency got to 18.53% when using DDA–HCl as collector; while a better result was obtained with DDA–Kerosene, the efficiency of separation reached 59.07% which was identical with 120 g/t DDA–HCl.

Barite-containing tailings represent a secondary barite resource characterized by substantial reserves and high recyclability. In this study, an innovative combined magnetic-gravity-flotation separation process was proposed for efficiently recovering barite from low-grade tailings waste. Low-intensity magnetic separation and high-gradient magnetic separation were sequentially employed to remove magnetic iron-bearing minerals. The non-magnetic fraction was subsequently subjected to shaking table separation to discard low-density gangue minerals, such as quartz. Through pre-enrichment via magnetic and gravity separation, the BaSO 4 grade increased from 7.92% to 74.43%, effectively upgrading the raw material quality. This pre-enrichment significantly reduced reagent consumption and operational costs in downstream flotation. Under optimized flotation conditions, a barite concentrate with 95.23% BaSO 4 purity was achieved, compliant with the first-class superior specifications outlined in China’s chemical industry standards for barite products. The mineral liberation analysis results indicated that the barite content in the concentrate reached 95.59%. The content of barite-poor intergrowth was less than 0.13%. This research provides a sustainable and efficient strategy for valorizing barite resources in industrial tailings.

An effective strategy to achieve separation and recovery of iron and nickel from low-grade laterite ore via microwave carbothermic reduction roasting is reported. In this work, we determined the underlying reason for the poor separation of iron and nickel during the magnetic separation process. The effect of operating variables on the recovery and separation of nickel and iron from low-grade laterite ore was initially investigated during microwave carbothermic reduction roasting to reveal the underlying reason for their poor separation. Then, the phase transformation and interfacial reduction of fayalite Fe 2 SiO 4 and hortonolite Fe 2− x Mg x SiO 4 in the mineral composition of laterite were systemically investigated via SEM/EDS and XRD analysis to determine the influence of CaO and MgO on the stepwise reduction behavior of Fe 2 SiO 4 . Phase transformation during the microwave carbothermic reduction roasting process by microwave irradiation heating occurred according to the following steps: (Fe,Ni) 2 SiO 4 ( x = 0) and Mg x (Fe,Ni) 2− x SiO 4 (0 ≤ x ≤ 2) → Mg x Ca y (Fe,Ni) 2− x − y SiO 4 (0 ≤ x + y ≤ 2) → Mg x Ca 2− x SiO 4 . Finally, the substituted iron and nickel ions were found to reduce to ferronickel alloy under a reductive atmosphere. The ferronickel alloy with a nickel grade of 7.05 wt.% and an iron grade of 71.70 wt.% was produced successfully from low-grade laterite ores in which the recovery ratios of nickel and iron were 92.44% and 91.17%, respectively. Furthermore, these methods could be extended to the reduction behavior and interfacial reaction of silicates in other ores.

This study investigates the selective flocculation and high-gradient magnetic separation of fine-grained specularite (−12.5 μm) and quartz, utilizing two representative carboxymethyl starch (CMS) flocculants with distinct carbon chain length: short carbon chain carboxymethyl corn starch (CMCS) and long carbon chain carboxymethyl cassava starch (CMTS). The results demonstrate that CMS significantly enhances the magnetic separation recovery of specularite. Under optimal conditions, CMCS with a degree of substitution (DS) of 0.60 and CMTS with a DS of 0.25 increased the magnetic recovery of specularite from 72 % to 93 % and 92 %, respectively. Furthermore, the iron grade of the magnetic concentrate from the binary mixture (specularite and quartz) was elevated by 4 % and 6 %, while iron recovery rates improved by 17 % and 24 %, respectively. Zeta potential measurements indicate that CMS predominantly adsorbs onto the surface of specularite, with the short carbon chain CMCS-60 exhibiting stronger selectivity than the long carbon chain CMTS-25. Infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) further suggest that the carboxymethyl groups of CMS undergo strong chemical adsorption with the Fe sites on the specularite surface but hardly adsorbs on quartz. Polarized light microscopy and sedimentation tests reveal that CMS selectively adsorbs onto the specularite surface, facilitating aggregation into larger flocs, thereby improving the magnetic separation recovery of specularite. Notably, CMTS-25, the long carbon chain flocculant, promotes more efficient aggregation of specularite. However, neither CMS interacts with quartz, and the growth of specularite flocs in the binary system results in the entrapment of some quartz particles, thereby diminishing the separation efficiency. These findings provide new insights into the role of CMS in sustainable mineral processing, highlighting its potential for improving fine iron ore beneficiation while minimizing environmental impact.

Carbothermal reduction followed by magnetic separation has been recognized as an effective recovery strategy to achieve separation of Mn and Fe from ferruginous manganese ores (Fe-Mn ores). However, it is difficult to improve the recovery of manganese more than 85% by changing carbothermic roasting reduction and magnetic separation. This work clarified the underlying reason for the poor separation with the magnetic separation process and proposed a promising process for the recovery of Fe and Mn from Fe-Mn ore. The effect of operating variables on recovery and separation of Mn and Fe from Fe-Mn ore is initially investigated during the carbothermic reduction roasting process followed by magnetic separation to reveal the underlying reason for the poor separation from Fe-Mn ores. Then, the stepwise reduction behaviors of the MnO-Fe 2 O 3 and MnO-Fe 2 O 3 -Al 2 O 3 systems were investigated to clarify that the formation of composite oxide Mn 1−x Fe x O (0 < x < 0.497) and hercynite (FeO·Al 2 O 3 ) directly caused the poor separation of Fe and Mn from high-alumina Fe-Mn ores. Then, the stepwise reduction roasting behaviors of Mn 1−x Fe x O and FeO·Al 2 O 3 were investigated by XRD, SEM-EDS and XPS analysis. After adjusting the experimental parameters, iron-rich products with a Fe recovery of 94.31% and a grade of 85.21% and manganese-rich product with a Mn recovery of 90.05% and a grade of 54.35% are obtained. The mass ratio of Mn/Fe increased to 8.5 in the manganese-rich product.
