An ultrathin and highly porous silica nanochannel membrane: toward highly efficient salinity energy conversion

Fei Yan,Lina Yao,Kenxin Chen,Qian Yang,Bin Su

Artificial solid-state nanochannels are capable of regulating unipolar ion transport in their confined space and thus converting the Gibbs free energy stored in the salinity gradients to electricity. In order to achieve a large conversion efficiency, highly ion-selective and permeable nanochannel membranes are inevitably desired. In this work we report the salinity energy conversion using an ultrathin silica isoporous membrane (SIM, ∼90 nm in thickness) that consists of straight, uniform and close packed nanochannels (diameter, 2–3 nm; pore density, ∼4 × 1012 cm−2, corresponding to a porosity of 16.7%). Thanks to its unique structure and negatively charged surface, the SIM displayed excellent cation selectivity and meanwhile preserved a high ionic flux, and was capable of harnessing the osmotic energy efficiently upon mixing artificial seawater and river water. We rationalized the ion distribution inside the nanochannels in the presence of salinity gradients and the effect of the channel length on the energy conversion efficiency by finite element simulations. The simulated results suggest that short nanochannels with an ultrasmall dimeter of ∼2.3 nm and a length of ∼100 nm possess excellent cation selectivity. Both experimental and theoretical results suggest that the SIM is a highly potential material in salinity energy conversion.

An ion-selective Li1.3Al0.3Ti1.7(PO4)3 membrane for electrolytic lithium extraction from brine

Tong Zhou,Nan Zhang,Qi Li,Guoyao Li,Haidong Sun,Chenglan Zhang,Juan Li,Hezhou Liu,Huanan Duan

The rapid increase in the commercialization of electric vehicles and portable electronics has markedly raised the demand for lithium resources. Extracting lithium from brine has become a critical pathway to address future lithium production challenges. However, the lithium extraction efficiency of conventional technologies is limited by the low levels of Li + and the high Mg 2+ /Li + ratio present in brine. A method involving one-step electrolysis with a solid-state electrolyte has been introduced for the direct and efficient extraction of metallic lithium. Li 1.3 Al 0.3 Ti 1.7 (PO 4 ) 3 (LATP) is considered a highly promising selective membrane for large-scale lithium extraction from brine sources due to its low cost, excellent stability, and high ionic conductivity. Herein, LATP electrolytes were synthesized through the optimization of solid-state reaction conditions. The resulting LATP pellets exhibited a high relative density of 98.29 % and an impressive ionic conductivity of 3.88 × 10 −4  S cm −1 . The lithium extraction device utilizing LATP as a selective membrane achieved a remarkable current efficiency of 97.4 % and a high lithium production rate of 40.4 μg h −1  cm −2 . After lithium extraction process, the LATP pellets retained the ionic conductivity of 2.69 × 10 −4  S cm −1 and preserved the sodium super ion conductors (NASICON) crystal structure. This study presents an efficient Li + selective membrane for extracting lithium directly from natural brine.

A novel Nafion-Functionalized Polyethersulfone(PES)-based ion-permselective separator for high performance Li-O2 batteries using LiI as a redox mediator

Jiuqing Liu,Feifei Song,Junying He,Zikun Hong,Qihou Li,Ya Chen,Lishun Bai,Fanli Zeng,Chen Cheng,Zehao Chen

Summary Owing to its unparalleled theoretical energy density, the Li-O 2 batteries are thought to be one of the most promising energy storage systems, but its application is seriously hindered by its potential safety risks arising from the passivation and corrosion of lithium anode. To address these issues, it is an efficient way to develop functionalized separator that could prevent the migration of anions and macromolecules from cathode toward anode. Herein, a novel Nafion-functionalized polyethersulfone (PES)-based ion-permselective separator was prepared by using non-solvent induced phase separation (NIPS) method. The Nafion ensures a better physical strength of the composite separator, and further characterizations show that the obtained composite separator owns good ionic conductivity (0.52 mS cm −1 ), high lithium ion migration number (0.80), and better cyclic stability (120 cycles, 1000 mAh g −1 ). Consequently, the composite separator serves as an excellent candidate to solve the “shuttle effect” of redox mediators (RMs), the assembled Li-O 2 battery with composite separator adding LiI as RMs presents lower charge overpotential and longer cycle stability (170 cycles, 1000 mAh g −1 ).

Piperazine concentration-driven effect fabricated NF membrane with ambidextrous selectivity for SO42−/cl− and Mg2+/Na+: Mechanism and efficient water purification

Hailin Chang,Shilei Fu,Ziao Zhang,Yating Hu,Zijian Cui,Jun Ma,Kexin Hou,Xiaobin Tang,Guibai Li,Heng Liang

Nanofiltration (NF) membranes with efficient selectivity are critical for addressing water source pollution from toxic heavy metals and emerging micropollutants. Herein, we engineered a polyamide (PA) NF membrane with ambidextrous selectivity by leveraging the concentration-driven effect of piperazine (PIP) during interfacial polymerization (IP). This PIP concentration-driven effect was verified by modulating the PIP concentration gradient from low to high, which enhanced IP efficiency via both an intensified alkaline reaction environment and concentration-driven diffusion. The optimized NF membrane features an ultrafine pore size distribution and reduced electronegativity, exhibiting a remarkable shift from sole SO 4 2− /Cl − selectivity to impressive ambidextrous selectivity, encompassing both SO 4 2− /Cl − (α ≈ 48, 98.3 % for Na 2 SO 4 ) and Mg 2+ /Na + (α ≈ 37, 98.2 % for MgCl 2 ). Moreover, it membrane also achieved exceptional removal efficiencies of 94.8–98.9 % for heavy metals and 77.6–99.3 % for antibiotics, while maintaining a water permeability of 19.3 L/m 2  h bar and mitigating the perm-selectivity trade-off. When purifying surface water containing heavy metals and antibiotics, the optimized NF membrane exhibited superior multi-pollutant removal and improved water production quality compared to the NF270 and NF90 membranes, and especially with its water permeance increased by ~27 % to 179 %. Our work uncovers a fundamental correlation between the PIP concentration, IP reaction, PA nanostructures and NF performance, providing valuable insights into customizing high-performance NF membranes to address complex water pollution challenges.

A LAMP-based hydrogen ion selective electrochemical sensor for highly sensitive detection of Mycoplasma pneumoniae

Huiqing Wang,Yang Li,Lin Tian,Xinyi Li,Qian Gao,Yaru Liu,Cuiping Ma,Qing Wang,Chao Shi

A concise and rapid detection method for Mycoplasma pneumoniae is urgently required due to its severe impact on human health. To meet such a need, this study proposed and constructed an innovative point-of-care testing (POCT) platform that consists of a hydrogen ion-selective loop-mediated isothermal amplification (H+-LAMP) sensor and an electrochemical detection device. The H+-LAMP sensor successfully integrated the working and reference electrodes and converted the H+ generated during the LAMP process into an electrochemical signal. High sensitivity and stability for pathogen detection were also achieved by treating the working electrode with an electrodeposited polyaniline solid contact layer and by using an ion-selective membrane. As a result, the sensor shows a sensitivity of 68.26 mV per pH, a response time of less than 2 s, and a potential drift of less than 5 mV within one hour, which well meets the urgent need. The results also demonstrated that the detection limit for Mycoplasma pneumoniae was lowered to 1 copy per μL, the nucleic acid extraction and detection process could be completed in 30 minutes, and the impact of interfering ions on the sensor was negligible. Validation with 20 clinical samples yielded satisfactory results. More importantly, the storage lifespan of such an electrochemical sensor is over seven days, which is a great advantage for on-site pathogen detection. Therefore, the hydrogen ion-selective sensor constructed in this investigation is particularly suitable as a core component for instant pathogen detection platforms.

A miniature all-solid-state calcium electrode applied to in situ seawater measurement

Hui Xu,You Wang,Zhiyuan Luo,Yiwen Pan

An all-solid-state miniature calcium ion selective electrode (ISE) based on poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) doped with poly(styrene sulfonate) (PEDOT(PSS)) for continuous in situ measurement in seawater was studied. The electrode substrate was a platinum (Pt) wire of 0.5 mm diameter and PEDOT(PSS) was electropolymerized on one end of the Pt wire to act as the solid contact of this calcium ISE. The PEDOT(PSS) layer was covered with a calcium-selective poly(vinyl chloride) membrane, which contained ETH129 as calcium ionophore, potassium tetrakis-(p-chlorophenyl)borate as lipophilic anion and bis(2-ethylhexyl) sebacate as the plasticizer. Experiments using electrochemical impedance spectroscopy and reversed chronopotentiometry illustrated that electropolymerized PEDOT(PSS) decreased the resistance and improved the stability of the electrode. The sensors can work stably in the calcium ion concentration range of 10−6–10−1 mol L−1 with the slope of 27.7 mV/decade. Also Na+, K+ and Mg2+ can hardly interfere with the performance of the electrode. This electrode was applied to measure the calcium ion concentration of seawater samples. The experimental data showed that the electrode can resist the corrosion of seawater and its reproducibility was good (SD < 0.1 mM kg−1). The lifetime of such an electrode was at least six months. Because of the wire-shape and the small size of such a liquid junction free calcium electrode, it is pressure-resistant and easy to package and seal, therefore it is suitable for use in underwater equipment for in situ seawater measurement.

Lithium-selective extraction utilizing lithium-trap LiAlFe-LDHs/MWCNTs/QCS composite membrane within the ship lock-type ion selective permeability system

Yi Wang,Huanhuan Guo,Xiaohan Xing,Can Wang,Xuefeng Zhang,Xiumin Li,Fengfeng Gao,Xiaogang Hao

A lithium aluminum iron layered double hydroxides/multiwalled carbon nanotubes/quaternized chitosan (LiAlFe-LDHs/MWCNTs/QCS) composite membrane with lithium-ion vacancies (Li + -trap) was fabricated through vacuum filtration method and pre-desorption process. The Li + -trap LiAlFe-LDHs/MWCNTs/QCS composite membrane had been developed for the selective extraction of Li + within the ship lock-type ion selective permeability (SL-ISP) system. In the Li + -trap LiAlFe-LDHs/MWCNTs/QCS composite membrane, the Li + -trap within LiAlFe-LDHs was pivotal for achieving selective Li + extraction. This selectivity was realized through the cyclic intercalation of Li + into the Li + -trap sites within the interlayer structure of LiAlFe-LDHs, a process that also facilitates the permeation of Cl - . The interference of impurity ions was further eliminated by the SL-ISP system, thus facilitating the selective extraction of Li + . Upon investigation, the Li + -trap LiAlFe-LDHs/MWCNTs/QCS composite membrane was found to achieve a Li + flux of 0.055 mol·m −2 ·h −1 and a separation factor of 8.3 at an equimolar concentration ( C Mg, Li  = 0.05 M) within the SL-ISP system. Additionally, the Li + -trap LiAlFe-LDHs/MWCNTs/QCS composite membrane demonstrated excellent separation performance in simulated brine, with a calculated Li + permeation flux of 0.053 mol·m −2 ·h −1 . The separation factors of Li + /Mg 2+ , Li + /K + , Li + /Na + and Li + /Ca 2+ reached values of 91.84, 69.75, 81.51 and 17.99, respectively. Therefore, the Li + -trap LiAlFe-LDHs/MWCNTs/QCS composite membrane could be effectively applied in the SL-ISP system for the selective extraction of Li + .

Covalent organic framework in-situ grown on MXenes to improve ion selectivity of composite membranes for vanadium flow battery

Xiaoyang Jia,Zhongrui Lu,Kai Huai,Xiancan Yuan,Zhuoran Yang,Rui Huang,Shaoxiong Zhai,Qing Ye,Zhanfeng Deng,Jun Lin,Shaojian He

Covalent organic frameworks (COFs) are highly porous crystalline polymers with well-defined pore structures, exhibiting great potential for the use of composite membranes to separate ions with different sizes. However, COFs are mostly insoluble and poorly dispersed in common solvents, making it very difficult to well disperse COFs in polymer matrix to prepare high-quality composite membranes. In this work, a MS hybrid was prepared by in-situ growing COFs on the surface of Ti 3 C 2 T x MXenes, which helps improve the filler-matrix compatibility significantly. The synergetic effect of the two-dimensional structure of MXene nanosheets and the porosity of COF components in MS contributes to the improvement for the ion selectivity of the composite membranes (SPEEK/MS). The vanadium flow battery (VFB) loaded with the SPEEK/MS-10 membrane achieves the energy efficiency of 93 % at 40 mA cm −2 , as compared to 86 % for that with the SPEEK control membrane. Moreover, the improved cycling stability and capacity retention was achieved for the SPEEK/MS-10 based VFB. Therefore, this work provides a promising strategy to fabricate high-performance COF-based composite PEMs for the VFB applications.

Stable MXene/cellulose nanofiber membranes as osmotic energy generators

Ruoyang Sun,Yumeng Xia,Mengyuan Peng,Yinghui Wang,Jinming Zhang,Qingtao Liu,Shouwei Zhang,Jinfeng Wang

Osmotic energy is a clean and renewable alternative resource to non-renewable fossil fuel. Harvesting this “blue” energy typically required ion-selective membranes. Two-dimensional (2D) materials are ideal scaffolds for constructing nanofluidic ion-selective membranes in osmotic energy conversion. However, the 2D membranes were often fragile and instable in solutions because of the weak van der Waals interactions between two-dimensional nanosheets. Here, stable MXene nanofluidic membranes were constructed by incorporating cellulose nanofiber (CNF) in MXene. The CNF was used as binder to enhance the mechanical stability in solutions. The resulted MXene/CNF membranes were investigated in terms of structure, ion selectivity and osmotic energy generation. The results showed that the MXene/CNF membranes exhibited excellent cation selectivity due to the negative charged carried by MXene and CNF, benefiting the osmotic energy conversion. The maximum power output density reached up to 1.32 and 0.338 W m −2 at 1000-fold KCl and 50-fold NaCl concentration gradient, respectively. Moreover, this MXene/CNF energy generator exhibited a long-term output stability. This work demonstrated the great potential of nanofluidic generators based on the two-dimensional material and the biomass material cellulose for osmotic energy conversion processes.

Nanofiltration Membrane with Enhanced Ion Selectivity Based on a Precision-Engineered Ultrathin Polyethylene Supporting Layer

Zhenxu Huang,Shiyu Zhang,Jing Liang,Tao Wu,Runnan Zhang,Xinda You,Runlai Li,Xianchun Chen,Qiang Fu

Nanofiltration (NF) technology is increasingly used in the water treatment and separation fields. However, most research has focused on refining the selective layer while overlooking the potential role of the supporting layer. With expertise in ultrathin polymer films, particularly in the production of polyethylene (PE) membranes, we explore the possibility of improving NF membrane performance by precisely controlling the structure and surface properties of the ultrathin supporting layer in this work. Here, we introduced an innovative NF membrane that used a submicrometer ultrathin PE membrane produced through a biaxial stretching process, which is significantly thinner than commercial PE membranes available on the market. The core innovations are as follows: first, we focused on precise control of the supporting layer rather than just the selective layer, achieving significant enhancements in overall NF membrane performance; second, the ultrathin PE supporting layer served as a tunable interface for interfacial polymerization, offering possibilities for structural control of the selective layer and advancing membrane performance innovations. The resulting NF membrane boasts an overall thickness of ∼630 nm, which represents the thinnest NF membrane documented to date. This ultrathin NF membrane showed an ultrahigh Cl–/SO42– selectivity of 338.03, placing it at the forefront of existing literature. This study sheds light on the important role of the supporting layer in the preparation of selective layers. We believe that this approach has the potential to contribute to the development of ultrathin, high-performance NF membranes.

Ion-Concentration-Hopping Heterolayer Gel for Ultrahigh Gradient Energy Conversion

Weipeng Chen,Ke Zhou,Zhixin Wu,Linsen Yang,Yahui Xie,Xue Meng,Ziguang Zhao,Liping Wen

Conventional solid ion channel systems relying on single one- or two-dimensional confined nanochannels enabled selective and ultrafast convective ion transport. However, due to intrinsic solid channel stacking, these systems often face pore–pore polarization and ion concentration blockage, thereby restricting their efficiency in macroscale ion transport. Here, we constructed a soft heterolayer-gel system that integrated an ion-selective hydrogel layer with a water-barrier organogel layer, achieving ultrahigh cation selectivity and flux and effectively providing high-efficiency gradient energy conversion on a macroscale order of magnitude. Specifically, the hydrogel layer featured an unconfined 3D network, where the fluctuations of highly hydrated polyelectrolyte chains driven by thermal dynamics enhanced cation selectivity and mitigated transfer energy barriers. Such chain fluctuation mechanisms facilitated ion-cluster internal transmission, thereby enhancing ion concentration hopping for more efficient ion-selective transport. Compared to the existing rigid nanochannel-based gradient energy conversion systems, such a heterogel-based power generator exhibited a record power density of 192.90 and 1.07 W/m2 at the square micrometer scale and square centimeter scale, respectively (under a 500-fold artificial solution). We anticipate that such heterolayer gels would be a promising candidate for energy separation and storage applications.

Artificial Lithium Isopropyl-Sulfide Macromolecules as an Ion-Selective Interface for Long-Life Lithium–Sulfur Batteries

Jie Liu,Yufeng Cao,Jinqiu Zhou,Mengfan Wang,Hongli Chen,Tingzhou Yang,Yawen Sun,Tao Qian,Chenglin Yan

The persistent reduction reactions between the hyperactive lithium metal (Li) and dissolved polysulfides would passivate the Li metal and rapidly decrease the cathodic active materials, thus leading to low Coulombic efficiency and a short cycle life of lithium–sulfur (Li–S) batteries. Herein, we construct artificial lithium isopropyl-sulfide macromolecules as an ion-selective interface on the Li metal (IS-Li) by a facile electrochemical polymerization method, in which the polymer network improves the elasticity and toughness to accommodate the volume change of the Li anode and the formed lithium-organosulfides provide great mechanical strength to resist the destruction of Li dendrites. Importantly, this interfacial layer is proved to be sufficient in damping polysulfide anion diffusion and stopping irreversible reduction between polysulfides and metallic Li, which greatly contribute to the performance improvement of Li–S batteries. The resulting Li–S batteries exhibit long-term stability with high capacity retention and Coulombic efficiency. This effective strategy sets a new approach for regulating the interfacial chemistry of Li metal anodes, which is significant for highly stable Li–S batteries.
