MXene-Based Soft Humidity-Driven Actuator with High Sensitivity and Fast Response

Jiaxin Wu,Wenfei Ai,Yue Long,Kai Song

Soft actuators possessing notable mechanical deformations, high sensitivity, and fast response speed play a crucial role in various applications, such as artificial muscles, soft robots, and intelligent devices. In this study, a smart humidity-driven actuator was successfully fabricated by utilizing MXene/cellulose nanofiber (CNF)/LiCl (MCL) through vacuum-assisted filtration with fast response speed and high sensitivity. Utilizing the excellent humidity responsiveness of MXene/CNF and the robust hygroscopicity of LiCl, the synergistic effect of these materials enhances the hygroscopic properties and response speed of the actuator. The MCL actuator demonstrates excellent actuation performance, fast deformation, and reliable cyclic stability. To illustrate the extensive potential of the soft actuator, a range of applications, from bionic devices to soft grippers and crawling actuators, are showcased. Remarkably, the crawling actuator demonstrates sustained crawling motion without necessitating a humidity switch, relying on the humidity gradient from water droplets, and exhibits spontaneous directional motions within a certain range, which makes it a promising prospect in the field of soft robotics.

Metal-organic frameworks decorated pomelo peel cellulose nanofibers membranes for high performance dye rejection

Wenbin Zhang,Keyan Yang,Xiangsheng Han,Hongzhen Cai,Wenyu Lu,Yanhao Yuan,Shunyi Zhang,Feng Gao

In this work, the cellulose nanofibers based membranes with both high dye solution flux and rejection rates were obtained. The cellulose nanofibers (PPCNFs) were prepared from pomelo peels by simple H 2 O 2 oxidation process , decorated with ZIF-8 crystals, and vacuum filtrated to form composite membranes (PPCNFs@ZIF x ). Ascribing to the highly porous structures of ZIF-8, as well as their uniform and stable deposition on the surfaces of PPCNFs, the resultant membranes were mechanically strong (tensile strength up to ~72.25 MPa), surface area rich (~ 199.46 m 2 /g), and with a maximal dye solution flux of ~32.3 L m −2 h −1 bar −1 and dye rejection rates larger than 85 % (89.95 % for methyl blue , 98.83 % for methyl violet, 95.91 % for malachite green , 95.36 % for rhodamine 6 G, and a high rejection rate of ~98.6 % toward methyl violet after 30-day cycles). Thus, this work paved a simple and green way to fabricate cellulose nanofibers based membranes with high performance in the remediation of dye contaminated water.

Enhancing the mechanical and barrier properties of biobased polyester incorporated with carboxylated cellulose nanofibers

Mohammad Raza Miah,Jiheng Ding,Hongran Zhao,Hao Wang,Qinchao Chu,Bin Fang,Lin Fan,Jinggang Wang,Jin Zhu

Most conventional plastic wraps for food packing and preservation have limited flexibility and relatively unique functions, seriously limiting their practical uses. However, smart and sustainable polyethylene 2,5-furandicarboxylate (PEF) polyester is currently employed for construction composite films to overcome this limitation. Herein, the fabrication of bio-based PEF/carboxylated cellulose nanofibers (CCNFs) blends films using PEF and CCNFs by a simple method involving layer-by-layer (LBL) assembly polymerization with exceptional mechanical and interfacial properties. In particular, the mechanical results revealed that the CP3 (1.0 wt% CCNFs) composite film had excellent mechanical properties like tensile strength (69.0 MPa), Young’s modulus (4.3 GPa), and toughness (1.26 MJ/m3), which is markedly higher than that of pure PEF film. Besides, the barrier results also demonstrated that CP3 blend film reduced the CO 2 and O 2 barriers by 13.4% and 11.2%, respectively, compared to pure PEF film. Consequently, FTIR, XPS, SEM/EDS, and AFM characterizations provide insight into the chemical composition, elemental distribution, morphology, and structural properties of CCNF that directly affect the PEF/CCNF composite. Notably, the barrier properties and fruit experiments revealed CP3 composite film, and the shelf life of fresh mangoes was extended by at least one week under ambient conditions (i.e., a relative humidity of 90–95%, a temperature of 30 °C, and natural light). These results indicate the practical use of CP3 composite film as a food packaging in next-generation, well-coated preservation films.

Cellulose nanofibrous/MXene aerogel encapsulated phase change composites with excellent thermal energy conversion and storage capacity

Bingqing Quan,Jinzhi Wang,Yi Li,Miao Sui,Heng Xie,Zhigang Liu,Hao Wu,Xiang Lu,Yi Tong

Phase change materials (PCMs) have emerged as the most efficient thermal energy storage solutions due to their unique energy storage properties, but they inevitably have shortcomings such as easy leakage and single thermal energy conversion method. In order to solve these problems and expand the application scope of PCMs in the field of thermal energy storage, using cellulose nanofibers , MXene , PEG, and Fe 3 O 4 as raw materials, combined with simple freeze-drying and vacuum impregnation techniques, a series of phase change composites (PCCs) with excellent solar/magnetothermal conversion properties were prepared. The solar-to-thermal conversion efficiencies of PCCs exceed 97.16%, and the lowest enthalpy value can still reach 151 J/g. When the content of Fe 3 O 4 is 15%, the PCC exhibits good magnetothermal conversion ability, which can perform magnetothermal fast charging, and the PCC can rise from 17 °C to 85 °C in 130 s. Moreover, the PCCs have excellent thermal stability, which can remain stable below 350 °C, and the enthalpies value of the PCCs hardly decrease after 1000 cycles, showing great practical application value.

Water-Induced Cellulose Nanofibers/Poly(vinyl alcohol) Hydrogels Regulated by Hydrogen Bonding for In Situ Water Shutoff

Hongjie Chen,Peng Wei,Ying Qi,Yahong Xie,Xueli Huang

Hydrogels have been widely applied to the water shutoff in oilfields due to their excellent three-dimensional network and thermal and physicochemical stability, and it is still a huge challenge to develop new hydrogels with simple preparation, low cost, and high mechanical performance that can meet the requirements of practical applications. Herein, we devised a simple and universal manufacturing method for regulating the hydrogen bonds between poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) and cellulose nanofibers (CNF) via the water-diffusion action, thus fabricating a physically tough PVA–CNF hydrogel for the in situ water shutoff. This method allowed the polymer chains to strengthen the molecular interactions between polymers upon replacing with water (a poor solvent) to regulate the cross-linking structure, characterizing by the nano-crystallinity domains and fibrillar segments, which also accounted for the thermal stability, extraordinary elasticity, high stretchability, and toughness of PVA–CNF hydrogel. Further, the obtained PVA–CNF hydrogel exhibited superb plugging performance, that is, the breakthrough pressure gradient could reach 71.56 MPa·m–1, surpassing all currently reported gelling water shutoff agents. This water-induced in situ hydrogelation made it well suited as a water shutoff agent in oilfields and may provide a promising strategy to fabricate mechanically robust smart materials for the water shutoff projects with low cost, simple processing, and high efficiency.

Anisotropic cellulose-based phase change aerogels for acoustic-thermal energy conversion and management

Kunyang Liu,Miao Sun,Rao Guo,Hui Wang,Tianyuan Chen,Yudong Li,Chengyu Wang,Haiyue Yang

Porous materials are usually used as sound-absorbing materials to alleviate noise pollution problems. However, the heat energy conversed from the acoustic energy is wasteful. Herein, anisotropic cellulose-based phase change aerogels (MXene/CNF-C/PEG aerogels) are fabricated by facile directional freeze casting method with anisotropic porous structure, efficient sound wave absorption, acoustic-thermal conversion and thermal management capability. MXene/CNF-C/PEG aerogels with shape stability are formed by hydrogen bonding forces between carboxylated cellulose nanofibers (CNF-C) and PEG without chemical crosslinking. The addition of MXene not only increases thermal conductive performance to 150 % but also enhances acoustic-thermal conversion ability effectively. Moreover, the directional porous MXene/CNF-C/PEG aerogels (DMCPs) possess high energy storage density (143.0 J/g) and acoustic-thermal conversion performance, which open up broad application prospect in the field of acoustic to heat energy conversion and storage.

Hierarchical mxene/Fe3O4/cellulose nanofiber composites with layer-by-layer architecture for high-performance electromagnetic interference shielding

Xiaoxuan Tan,Yang He,Chunhong Wang,Yu Zhang,Wenshu Wang,Hanyu Li,Rongrong Yu

The proliferation of electronic devices has made electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding increasingly critical for both device performance and human health protection. Here, we demonstrate a hierarchical composite film that achieves exceptional EMI shielding through the synergistic integration of magnetic nanofibers and MXene nanosheets. By combining electrospinning and layer-by-layer assembly, we fabricate a composite structure where Fe 3 O 4 -loaded cellulose/PAN nanofibers alternate with Ti 3 C 2 T x MXene layers, creating multiple heterogeneous interfaces for enhanced electromagnetic wave attenuation. The engineered architecture promotes multiple electromagnetic loss mechanisms through interface polarization, magnetic losses, and multiple internal reflections. The optimized composite exhibits remarkable performance metrics: achieving a thickness-specific shielding efficiency of 118 dB/mm at just 0.18 mm thickness, significantly surpassing current commercial standards. At 0.64 mm thickness, the electromagnetic shielding effectiveness reaches 33.2 dB, effectively blocking over 99.9 % of electromagnetic radiation. Notably, the composite demonstrates exceptional mechanical durability, retaining 96.8 % of its shielding effectiveness after 300 bending cycles. The integration of renewable cellulose and magnetic components with highly conductive MXene not only enhances electromagnetic wave attenuation but also promotes environmental sustainability. This combination of ultra-thin profile, superior shielding performance, and mechanical flexibility, coupled with eco-friendly material selection, provides a promising pathway for EMI protection.

Stable MXene/cellulose nanofiber membranes as osmotic energy generators

Ruoyang Sun,Yumeng Xia,Mengyuan Peng,Yinghui Wang,Jinming Zhang,Qingtao Liu,Shouwei Zhang,Jinfeng Wang

Osmotic energy is a clean and renewable alternative resource to non-renewable fossil fuel. Harvesting this “blue” energy typically required ion-selective membranes. Two-dimensional (2D) materials are ideal scaffolds for constructing nanofluidic ion-selective membranes in osmotic energy conversion. However, the 2D membranes were often fragile and instable in solutions because of the weak van der Waals interactions between two-dimensional nanosheets. Here, stable MXene nanofluidic membranes were constructed by incorporating cellulose nanofiber (CNF) in MXene. The CNF was used as binder to enhance the mechanical stability in solutions. The resulted MXene/CNF membranes were investigated in terms of structure, ion selectivity and osmotic energy generation. The results showed that the MXene/CNF membranes exhibited excellent cation selectivity due to the negative charged carried by MXene and CNF, benefiting the osmotic energy conversion. The maximum power output density reached up to 1.32 and 0.338 W m −2 at 1000-fold KCl and 50-fold NaCl concentration gradient, respectively. Moreover, this MXene/CNF energy generator exhibited a long-term output stability. This work demonstrated the great potential of nanofluidic generators based on the two-dimensional material and the biomass material cellulose for osmotic energy conversion processes.

Construction of cellulose nanofiber-Ti3C2Tx MXene/silver nanowire nanocomposite papers with gradient structure for efficient electromagnetic interference shielding

Zhao Yao,Miao Baoji,Nawaz Muhammad Asif,Zhu Qingsong,Chen Qiuling,Reina Tomas Ramirez,Bai Jinbo,He Delong,Al-Tahan Mohammed A.,Arsalan Muhammad

With the widespread application of communication equipment with electromagnetic signal transmission to cause electromagnetic radiation pollution, there is an urgent need for high-performance electromagnetic shielding materials. Here, an ultrathin, flexible, alternating multilayered, and conductive gradient-structured cellulose nanofiber–MXene/silver nanowire (CNF-MXene/AgNW) nanocomposite paper with high mechanical strength, strong electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding, and outstanding thermal management was constructed via the alternating vacuum filtration (AVF) process. The extensive hydrogen bonding interactions between MXene, CNF, and AgNW enhance the interfacial adhesion and conductive synergy between layers, resulting in excellent tensile strength of 194.3 MPa and fracture strain of 7.62% of nanocomposite paper. The alternating conductive gradient structure of the nanocomposite paper greatly increases the interlayer multiple reflections and absorption of electromagnetic waves, resulting in a high conductivity of 3237.35 S cm −1 and excellent electromagnetic shielding efficiency of 65.4 dB for the nanocomposite paper. Under an external low voltage of 3 V, the surface temperature of the nanocomposite paper reaches 107.2 ℃ within 10 s and can be stable for a long time. These results indicate that CNF-MXene/AgNW nanocomposite paper with a conductive gradient structure has potential applications in the fields of aerospace, communication engineering, and wearable devices.

Tunable biphasic drug release from ethyl cellulose nanofibers fabricated using a modified coaxial electrospinning process

Li Chen,Wang Zhuan-Hua,Yu Deng-Guang,Williams Gareth R

This manuscript reports a new type of drug-loaded core-shell nanofibers that provide tunable biphasic release of quercetin. The nanofibers were fabricated using a modified coaxial electrospinning process, in which a polyvinyl chloride (PVC)-coated concentric spinneret was employed. Poly (vinyl pyrrolidone) (PVP) and ethyl cellulose (EC) were used as the polymer matrices to form the shell and core parts of the nanofibers, respectively. Scanning and transmission electron microscopy demonstrated that the nanofibers had linear morphologies and core-shell structures. The quercetin was found to be present in the nanofibers in the amorphous physical status, on the basis of X-ray diffraction results. In vitro release profiles showed that the PVP shell very rapidly freed its drug cargo into the solution, while the EC core provided the succedent sustained release. Variation of the drug loading permitted the release profiles to be tuned.

Self-assembled supramolecule for synthesizing highly thermally conductive Cellulose/Carbon nitride nanocomposites with improved flame retardancy

Hangzhen Zhang,Kun Wu,Enxiang Jiao,Yingchun Liu,Jun Shi,Mangeng Lu

The fabrication of polymer composites with excellent thermal conductivity typically involves complex matrix or fillers modifications. This study proposed a simple technique based on precursor selection for obtaining highly thermally conductive cellulose nanofiber (CNF)/supramolecule-synthesized carbon nitride (SCN) composites. Fourier-transform infrared tests demonstrated the construction of hydrogen bonds between CNF and SCN; a highly ordered structure and relatively compact in-plane stacking were confirmed via scanning electron microscopy and X-ray diffraction characterizations. Consequently, the resultant CNF/SCN composites exhibited remarkable in-plane thermal conductivity of 11.83 ± 0.41 W m −1 K −1 at 30 wt% SCN content, which was attributed to the significantly reduced interfacial phonon scattering. It also showed evident improvements in electrical insulation and flame retardancy compared with the pure CNF film, where the volume resistivity, peak heat release rate, and total heat release were remarkably enhanced by 1242% and reduced by 59.9% and 15.8%, respectively. Further analysis of char residuals revealed a relatively dense surface, high concentration of carbon materials, and a high degree of graphitization, indicating that the char residual functioned as a robust physical barrier to effectively inhibit combustion. This study provides a facile approach to achieving high-efficiency improvements in thermal conductivity and flame retardancy, and simultaneously facilitating broader applications of carbon nitride in thermal management.

Cellulose nanofiber/MXene/FeCo composites with gradient structure for highly absorbed electromagnetic interference shielding

Meng Ma,Wenting Tao,Xianjun Liao,Si Chen,Yanqin Shi,Huiwen He,Xu Wang

Conductive polymer composites (CPCs) had attracted tremendous attention in the field of electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding. However, these materials encountered an intrinsic contradiction between high EMI shielding effectiveness (EMI SE) and low electromagnetic waves reflection. Herein, an excellent EMI SE and low electromagnetic waves reflection composite film with a controllable magnetic-conductive dual gradient structure was constructed using cellulose nanofiber (CNF), MXene, and FeCo by layer-by-layer vacuum filtration method. Benefiting from the synergy of the transition layers and reflection layer with gradient structure, the composite film exhibited favorable impedance matching, abundant loss mechanism, and efficient EMI shielding ability, resulting in absorption dominated shielding characteristic. In addition, the gradient structure facilitated the “absorb-reflect-reabsorb” process when electromagnetic waves were transmitted into the composite film. The obtained CNF/MXene/FeCo-G composite film possessed a remarkable EMI SE of 58.0 dB and the reflection coefficient (R) as low as 0.61. It was proven that the electromagnetic waves absorbing ability can be enhanced by thickening the transition layers, and the EMI SE was improved with the thickening of the reflection layer. Therefore, this work provided a facile strategy to prepare high EMI SE materials with low reflection, which had a good application prospect as the new-generated smart electronic devices.
